Chapter Text

Princess Arianwen dismounted her horse. Her father had sent her to Camelot for a purpose. He was hoping to form more than an alliance with the Great King Arthur. He had sent her here with instructions to try and seduce the bachelor king, a task that many princesses and ladies before her had tried but with no luck. But princess Arianwen was certain that she's able to do this. Being married to King Arthur would be a great privilege, the new king had already made a name for himself and his kingdom was already greater than any of the others, with his knights of the round table and his sister, princess Morgana, as the court sorceress, no one could even think about attacking Camelot.

As her eyes caught the man standing at the bottom of the stairs, she nearly tripped over air. The man was gorgeous. Introductions were made and she realised that she is in the presence of the one and only king Arthur of Camelot. Powerful and handsome. What else could a girl possibly want? Well this just made her job here a whole lot easier.

King Arthur was just wonderful. Even in their negotiations he would try to find the best solution for both their kingdoms and honestly, she got a far better deal than she was hoping for.

But her other mission was not going as well as the first.

Although king Arthur was charming and gentle and never impolite, he wouldn't pay any attention to her sometimes very obvious advances. It almost seemed like he was ignoring her on purpose. The other problem in the way of her pursuit was the king's sister, princess Morgana. Princess Arianwen was sure Princess Morgana knew her intentions of coming to Camelot and she didn't like it. But she couldn't understand why? Surely she wasn't jealous.

But what if she was? Oh wouldn't that be a great scandal?

It was after a rather bold move in a public event that princess Morgana finally sought her out. She walked in her chambers and sat in front of her at the table, cold and condescending.

“I'm not one to sit around and chatter idly, so I just get to the point, shall I? I noticed you have been making some… advances towards my brother, king Arthur. Am I right to assume that forming the alliance wasn't the only purpose that motivated you to bear the hardships of such a long journey to Camelot?”

“What if I say you're right?” Princess Arianwen said shamelessly.

Princess Morgana smirked. “Then I would tell you that it's a bit late for that kind of thing.”

“What- what do you mean?”

“I'm sorry to be bearer of the bad news, but somebody already stole my brother's heart and love and having seen them together, I'd say, excuse my forwardness, you don't have any chance with him anymore. Trust me, I've seen so many people try and fail to win his affection. So if you want my advice, you should stop this ridiculous game and just enjoy your stay in our not so humble castle. Camelot is so lovely at this time of year.”

“But who is she? Who is his lover? If there is a lover.”

“Oh you'll see that for yourself soon enough.” And with that she got up to leave. “Now if you'll excuse me.” and she left princess Arianwen to sit there and wonder all alone.

It was with so many thoughts and doubts, that Princess Arianwen joined the feast that night. It was a public event and was held in the citadel. With all kind of men and women present. Her maid guided her to a table but no one was seated there. Everyone was standing around chatting and laughing and some were even dancing. Not with a partner but as a group, Arianwen was horrified.

Her eyes found King Arthur in the crowd, bearing a pint of what commoners drink and talking animatedly with a servant girl. Wait, was she the supposed lover?

Princess Arianwen shook her head. No, there was no way. The girl was as pale as they come. Not a great beauty, at all. He could do so much better.

She got distracted when someone collided with her, she looked behind to tell off anybody it was when the words stuck in her throat. It was a man, tall and pale and muscled, long black hair and high cheekbones but the thing that caught her eye was the scar that lined his face, crossing over his eye and brow and making him even more intimidating.

The man looked at her and gave a slight bow. He muttered a sorry and was gone before she could say anything.

But her eyes followed the man as he made his way in the crowd. Not that it was hard for him. People would clear the path for him and greet him with big smiles on their faces. Weird, shouldn't they be afraid of him? He sure looks scary, doesn't he? But she watched as the man walked straight to the king. The king literally light up and he stepped away from the man he was talking to and nearly ran towards the scary looking man. The man laughed and pulled the king to himself and wrapped his arms protectively around him. King Arthur returned the hug just as strongly and whispered something in the man's ear. Soon they let go and Princess Arianwen watched with wide eyes as the king pulled the man down in a hot, passionate kiss. Her mind shut down and she could just stand there, gawking as the two men shared a kiss in the middle of the citadel, for everyone to see. Speaking of, why was no one doing anything? Why there wasn't a shout of protest? She looked around and saw the people looking at their king and the man, but they didn't look disgusted, they looked rather… pleased?

It was at this moment that Princess Morgana appeared by her side. Princess Arianwen looked over at her to find a soft look on her face as she looked at her brother and the man that was now talking animatedly to the king.

“You see what I was talking about, now, don't you?” Princess Morgana said in an amused tone.

“A male lover! I'd like to know how long that will last.” Princess Arianwen replied.

Princess Morgana looked at her, horrified and disgusted but soon calmed her features and said in a dangerously calm voice. “They're married, your highness. By all the laws, magic and non magic, my brother, King Arthur of Camelot is married to Lord Merlin, also known as Emrys who has even a higher reputation than my own brother. And unless you've been living under a big old rock, I'm sure you've heard as to who he really is. So here's a little tip, don't let him hear you making those statements about their marriage ever, for your own sake, of course.”

Princess Morgana watched with immense satisfaction as the look of realisation and then horror appeared on Princess Arianwen’s face.

“So we understand each other. Splendid.” And with that she walked off, leaving the other princess to contemplate her choice of coming to Camelot in the first place.

As Morgana walked past her brothers, she caught Merlin's eyes and he gave them a wink and a nod. Morgana couldn't stop grinning if she tried.

The music played again and Merlin took his husband to the the middle of the dance floor. Soon the knights joined them too and as they all danced together, the magic too danced in the air around them.

Chapter Text

After the event was wrapped up, Arthur and Merlin retired to their shared chambers. Merlin helped Arthur out of his clothes, as was their habit. Arthur used to remind Merlin every night that he didn't have to do this anymore as he was no longer his servant. But then Merlin said he wants to do this and when he was still met with Arthur's protests he had said in a quiet voice that it was because he didn't want someone else touch Arthur like he has for so many years. That had shut Arthur up and he had stared at Merlin for a bit as his cheeks turned red and the next moment they were kissing and Arthur was clawing at Merlin's clothes and the evening was spent in long kisses, gentle caresses and lustful touches.

Arthur watched Merlin's face now and for the first time in days breathed a sigh of relief and let himself relax. Merlin helped Arthur out of his tunic and smiled at how the move messed up his perfect hair. He ran his fingers through the blonde hair and smoothed it out. Arthur grabbed Merlin's hand and brought it to his lips. Merlin watched Arthur lay wet kisses on his knuckles one by one with all the love in the world and whispered in a quiet tone. “I've missed you.”

“I've missed you too, my dear.” Arthur kissed Merlin's wrist, right over his pulse point. “To stay in this castle without you is just unbearable. I cannot breathe when you aren't here. I cannot think. I simply cannot do anything.”

“Yeah, well you're hopeless without me.” Merlin smirked, waiting for a snarky response.

“I sure am.” Arthur just chuckled and held Merlin's hand in both his hands. “Oh I was forgetting to ask. You came back two days earlier than what you planned. Was something the matter?”

“Oh no love. Everything went splendidly. Things just worked better than I thought. And I wanted to catch the visiting party before their departure. When is that due, exactly?”

“In a few days, I think. I'm not quite sure. Guinevere knows, though. You better ask her.”

“I will.” Merlin smiled mischievously. “Now, tell me about Princess Arianwen. A pretty face, isn't she?”

“Is the great and mighty Emrys jealous?” Arthur smirked at his silly husband.

“Jealous? Oh no no. Just amused, really. Morgana told me all about her little… attempts to get your attention.”

“She did? When? Oh don't tell me. The mind link thing. It's so weird.”

Merlin just grinned. “It's good for gossiping though. And talking about you. Sometimes.”

“Oh so you talk about me, huh?”

“I said sometimes.”

“What do you talk about, Merlin?”

“Well sometimes about how you're being an unbearable ass about something unimportant or how much of a prat you are and in one occasion about how I should just take you there on the round table because you just looked so pretty with that concentrated look on your face and your little pout.” Arthur's breath hitched and Merlin continued as his hands starting touching Arthur everywhere. “But certainly not about how hot your skin feels pressed to mine. Not about how you moan my name when I'm buried deep inside of you. How I love the sound of my name on your lips. Not about the look on your pretty face when I push you over the edge and you lay there, spent and worn in my arms. Not about all the bad bad things I want to do to you, Arthur. How I want to worship every bit of you and make you see yourself through my eyes. Oh only if you could, Arthur. Only if you could see yourself as I see you.”

“Merlin” Arthur breathed out his lover's name. “I need you, please.”

“I'm all yours, my king.”

“Call my name, Merlin. Call me by my name. I'm yours, Merlin. All yours. Call my name, love.”

“Arthur. My Arthur.”

“Yours. Only yours.”

Merlin would deny the burst of magic later but for now he just kissed his husband's forehead and pulled him closer to himself.

Merlin walked in the throne room right behind Arthur. Today, they were supposed to finalise the negotiations and write down the peace treaty. Arthur had offered Princess Arianwen a deal that she just couldn't refuse and was sure there would be no problem. Merlin and Morgana had to agree.

The knights and the lords of the Camelot party all stood up for the King. The knights gave a sigh of relief when they saw the Dragonlord with the King. Arthur was pretty difficult to deal with when Merlin wasn't around. They'd found that out the hard way.

Merlin smiled at them and gave a nod to Morgana. Arthur walked them to Princess Arianwen and her party. “Your highness, may I introduce to you my husband, Lord Merlin.” Arthur grinned at Merlin who mirrored his smile and offered the visiting princess a hand that she took hesitantly. “Good to meet you, your highness. I hope your stay here was pleasant.”

“Oh it sure was. I'm having such a great time. Thank you, my lord.” The still terrified princess replied.

“That's wonderful. Arthur's such an amazing host, don't you say?” Merlin said playfully. He heard a sound of laughter that someone covered with a cough.

“Um… yeah, yeah. Of course he is. We had everything we needed. We… um couldn't ask for more.”

“It's great to hear you felt so much at home here.” Merlin said the words with a wide smile but there was no trace of warmth in them. Princess Arianwen should have known better as to try and seduce his husband.

The visiting princess gulped and looked at him with wide eyes, not knowing how to respond.

“Um, shall we get to work?” Arthur stood between Merlin and Princess Arianwen. Merlin turned to his husband and smiled brightly.

“Oh certainly, love.” He pushed Arthur's chair back with a flash of magic and then sat himself at his right hand. “Let us begin.”

‘Well done’ Morgana said in Merlin's head.

‘Oh, it's not over, yet.’

‘God, I love your dark side. So does Arthur, apparently.’

‘I have plans for that, too.’

‘Gross, Merlin. I didn't need that image.’

Merlin just grinned at her.

“They're giving us strange looks.” Arthur observed the visiting party.

Gwaine nodded. “Yeah, they're probably thinking how many times you went down on our little Merlin, here.”

“Oh countless times, Gwaine.” Arthur replied breathlessly.

Gwaine gasped. “Shameless, princess.”

Merlin shook his head. “They’re giving me the strange looks. I'm a commoner and a warlock and your husband with a freaky scar. Of course they are gonna look.”

Arthur's face went dark. Merlin pinched his nose. “No, Arthur. You're not going there. It wasn't your fault.”

“How was it not my fault, Merlin?” He turned to his husband. “You got that scar trying to save me. For the thousandth time. If I haven't gone there, if you didn't have to fight that wyvern when you were bleeding to death. If I hadn't been so reckless and left everybody behind-”

Merlin put his finger on Arthur's lips, shushing him. “It. Was. Not. Your. Fault. I chose to come after you. I chose to fight that vicious wyvern. I chose to save the love of my life, Arthur. For the last time, you can't blame yourself for something I chose to do myself, alright?”

Arthur just managed to nod. He didn't trust himself to get any words out without bursting into tears. He loved his man so much, it hurt. He loved Merlin. This sassy, pretty, all powerful force of nature. He didn't have a chance against him. How could he? When Merlin was there, turning his world upside down, helping him see everything in a different light. Oh he just loved Merlin so very much.

He leaned in Merlin's space and kissed his lover right where the scar had crossed over his pretty face. “You'll be the death of me, Merlin.”

“Bold of you to think death can get you out of this relationship, love.”

Arthur just kissed him. Damn what anyone would think. He was married to the best man he knew and he loved him. They all could go to hell.
