Chapter Text
This was the last class of the day. We were going over yet another book on some “helpful” reading strategies we might need to use on the final exam coming up in a couple of months. Although I didn't find them so helpful.
I had begun to slowly zone off until the teacher called someone to translate something or whatever. I looked over to see who it was…and of course, it was the smartest kid in the class, Light Yagami. I didn’t really have anything against him, all the girls in the class took interest in him due to his nonchalant personality in class. I really don’t understand what they see in him. To me, he was just another guy in the classroom. Other than the fact he didn’t really talk to anyone, and mostly looked out the window.
I listened closely as he began reading. He sighed before standing up, seeming bored with the lesson as well. Follow the teachings of God and receive his blessings…and so it shall be, that the seas will again become bountiful. And the raging storms will subside.” He received small applause as he finished reading, along with some gratitude from the teacher.
After the clapping and praise died down, the teacher cleared his throat, then continued speaking.. “Ahem. Class, due to the upcoming end of the year… as you know, you all have a big exam coming up soon.” everyone groaned, including me. Today was just one of those days where i could care LESS if we had an exam. I’d rather be home sleeping than sitting in this classroom hearing him talk about everything we didn’t do.
“Ah.” He continued.. “I’m going to give you all a project. I will assign a partner for each of you to work with. The both of you will study one of the following on the board..” He paused for a moment, pointing to some of the things he wrote down on the board. I looked up, rubbing my eyes so i wouldn’t fall asleep. The board read… ‘Astronomy, food webs, Secrets of the ocean, Historical figures.’ I sighed audibly, I began twirling my H/C hair. Trying to do ANYTHING to entertain myself. After all the grunts, and sighs, and lip smacks died down.. The teacher continued.. “it has to include photos, a detailed explanation of how it works and why it is important… you have a month to complete it.”
After a while i began zoning out again, as the teacher began assigning partners. I began thinking about what i was going to be doing after school. Maybe i’d go to the park or something…hopefully i’d get a good partner, maybe it’ll be someone i know— My thoughts were quickly interrupted when i heard my name “Mrs L/N, are you with us?”
My eyes widened, now the whole class was staring at me. I even got the attention of the oh so smart Light Yagami. Great. “Yes, sir.”. I responded, my voice sounding scratchy, like i just ate a bunch of glass. “You will be working with Mr Yagami for this project, it seems you are the only two left.”
The class grew quiet, my eyes widened slightly, and i looked over at Light, who seemed to be looking out the window again. Before slowly turning his gaze to me for a few seconds, before looking back out the window. Maybe this wasn’t too bad. But i could practically feel the displeased glares from some of the other girls in the classroom. The teacher cleared his throat again, and began speaking once more.. “Now, i will be giving you all the rest of the class time to discuss the plans of the project with your partner.” He set his things down on the desk, and the class began getting loud once again.
Reluctantly, i began walking over to Light’s desk. Yet again, he was looking out the window. It seemed like he was zoned out for the most part. I sighed quietly, before sitting down next to him. As soon as i sat down next to him, he finally turned his head from the window, his gaze meeting mine as he snapped back to reality. Of course, he wasn’t exactly the most talkative person ever, but he wasn’t the kind of guy to be rude either. I felt kind of creeped out as he just stared at me for a few seconds. After about a minute or two, he finally breaks the silence. “Looks like we’re partners now” He stated. Surprisingly, his voice was more deeper than i thought. It still had a kind and gentle tone to it.
“yeah…I guess so.” I said, i could STILL feel the glares of some of the other girls on me as i talked to this dude. What was so special about him anyways?. “So…since we had a few options on what we wanted the project to be on I was thinking maybe we could do astronomy? Well, since that’s the one i’m most familiar with.” I said, trying to start up a DECENT conversation. If i didn’t we’d be sitting here for hours without saying a word.
I could visibly see a smirk slowly appear on his lips as I suggested the idea. He seemed pleased with that idea that I had proposed to him. He nodded in agreement, surprisingly… and stated,"Yeah...that sounds perfect." He was already making plans and ideas as to how the project could go. I already knew that he was a bit of a perfectionist from time to time. Which was actually most of the time.. "You say it's the one you're most familiar with...I'm guessing you're the type that's fascinated with the starry night sky and such?" He asked his question, sounding somewhat casual as he kept his eyes locked on mine.
“Yeah, the solar system and astronomy in general has always been an interest of mine. Not to mention the fact that it’s all so beautiful! It’s almost like you’re getting a free show as night if you look into a telescope. I’ve been trying to save up for one, but having to pay the fees for this university was already a lot in it’s own…” I paused for a moment, thinking about stargazing at night. My thoughts began to trail off a bit before i came back to reality. “Sorry about that. Anyways, what about you? Do you like astronomy too?” I asked a genuine question, it was better to try and get to know him than to sulk about who else i could’ve gotten better for the project.
"I actually have a keen interest in astronomy as well...a lot of it has to do with my love of space in general." He quickly replied. It almost seemed as if he was excited to be working with me on this project after all. His posture even straightened. Now he wasn’t slumped over, he was sitting straight up. I could practically see the glint of excitement and interest in his eyes as I began explaining my utter fascination with astronomy. As I finished talking about the hobby, he nodded and listened intently, taking in every word I was saying as if he were a sponge absorbing every bit of knowledge. Apparently he liked learning new things, which could be expected from him since he IS the top of the class after all.
“Really? I guess we both have something in common after all.” I said, a soft smile making its way to my face. This so called “Genius” was actually kind of nice? He might have a bit of a staring problem though, but the fact that we shared some of the same interests was really comforting. “So..Since class is about to end in about 5 minutes, do you maybe wanna meet up at my place so we can discuss more about the project? I have a couple of ideas for it… but that’s only if you’re comfortable with it of course” I said, i didn’t want to make him uncomfortable.
I could see a small creep up slowly on his face as I invited him to my place to further discuss the project. Light for the most part seemed pleased...but I couldn’t really figure out why, it almost seemed as if he were pleased for a different reason. But at the same time it’d be bad to judge someone after just getting to know them. He quickly responded with a casual response per usual. "That's not a problem...I would actually prefer it that way honestly." He said, nodding in agreement. It was now the last few minutes of class, it went by pretty fast in my opinion...but that didn't mean we couldn’t continue our conversation. "Alright..well then. See you after class?" He said, nodding to me.
“Yeah..sure.” Just when i said that the bell rung, and i began to pack up quickly so i could get ready to head home for the day. The only thing i wasn’t ready for was to walk ALL the way home by myself. Usually, i would be walking home with my best friend, (Bsf name) but she had to leave early because she wasn’t feeling well. I paused, realizing i had forgotten something. “Wait, Light.” I said, walking up to him. “Is it alright if I give you my number? This is so i can text you the address. I almost forgot.” I said, ripping off a small piece of paper from my notebook.
He didn’t respond and just nodded quickly. He pulled out his phone from his pocket. “Yeah, go ahead and give me your number, I’ll add you as a contact now so when i get home i can go ahead and text you.” He replied, as i handed him my number that i had written down. “Yeah, here you go. Don’t lose it!.” I said jokingly, putting my bag on. I could see him chuckle a small bit to my very very very very funny joke. "Don't worry, i won't." He said in amusement, watching me as i put my school bag on. The room was mostly empty by now, all the other students had headed home which left me alone with Light. Just then the teacher came up to us two, interrupting our conversation RUDELY.. "Don't forgot about your project together" The teacher said sternly then left us two alone again.
“Well…that was something.” I said, giggling softly as i mocked the teacher. I caused him to chuckle softly to himself. What the teacher got was well deserved anyways, like WHO gives you an assignment RIGHT before summer break? Sane? I think not. “Anyways, i’ll talk to you later, cya light!” I said, before waving him off “See you.” He responded simply, waving back at me. I then walked out the classroom and on my way home. As i began walking home, i took note of everything around me. The people walking by, the various news stations talking about the recent murders…and yet again people discussing the all famous “L”. I sometimes wondered who this “L” guy really was, and why didn’t he reveal himself to anyone. All these famous detectives usually love the attention… but this guy, just didn’t for some reason.
But then, my mind trailed onto the project, i began thinking to myself how this might go…maybe Light isn’t as bad as they say..or is he?. I snapped back into reality as i stopped in front of my house. Just then, i got a text on my phone…
