Chapter Text
The worst part about having new rookies start at the station was all of the extra paperwork Captain Zoe Andersen was swimming in to the point that she even had to take a stack home. As she was working in bed, the sheets started rustling and out from beneath popped Lucy Chen.
“Zo, can you stop working?” Lucy asked as she climbed up Zoe’s body while pushing files off of her stomach.
“It’s your fault. Rookies are a lot of work,” Zoe explained.
“How’s that even possible? Today was only our first day, which I’ve barely gotten a chance to tell you about, because you’re working when you’re supposed to be spending time with me,” she tried not to whine, but she was in need of some attention.
“You’re right,” she agreed with a sigh and gathered up all of the paperwork, but clearly, her efforts were not fast enough as Lucy joined in to rush the process by dropping the files on the ground. “Hey, I still need to look at those later.”
“That’s a later problem. Right now…,” in lieu of finishing her sentence, Lucy dove in for a fierce kiss.
Zoe hummed happily. “You’re right. Who cares about work when I can have you?”
“Exactly,” she smirked as she tucked her dark brown hair behind her ear.
“I know that look. What’s on your mind?” She wondered, since Lucy was staring at her with more than just lust in her gaze as she would have expected given the fact that neither of them were wearing pants while laying in bed together.
“You’re incredible.”
“Did you forget that?”
“No,” Lucy settled more comfortably on her as she cupped her face. “I could never forget how great you are.”
Zoe pecked her forehead. “You’re in a good mood. I’m surprised you’re not grumpier considering the fact that your Training Officer is Bradford.”
“Can we not talk about him? He’s a mood killer, and I need a mood booster right now if you know what I mean.”
“Got it, so your day sucked,” she assumed.
“Well, I loved getting the first taste of being a cop even if my T.O. is an ass. I’m hoping tomorrow is better, and if it’s not, I’ll be coming over after shift for a pick me up.”
“A pick me up? I thought I was your girlfriend.”
“One of your greatest skills as my girlfriend is how good you are at pick me ups,” Lucy smiled.
“Am I being used?”
“Definitely. Why else would I date someone so hot?”
Zoe snickered. “Hot AND incredible? Wow, you’re showering me with compliments today.” She kissed her quickly.
“Can’t help it. I have a great job and a great woman. What more could I want?”
“More money. Rookies get paid next to nothing.”
“That sounds like an issue I should take up with my Captain.”
“Your Captain isn’t gonna give you a raise.”
“Are you sure about that?” Lucy asked coyly as her index finger drew circles on her inner thigh. “I think I can be very convincing.”
“I’d like to see you try.”
Try she did she was not met with a raise. At least she slept well in Zoe’s arms much later in the evening.

Every shift was difficult. Lucy’s whole body ached, her steps turned sluggish, and her eyes grew weary, but then she went to Zoe’s house afterwards and felt all of the exhaustion and pain melt away the longer she was in her embrace. Lucy curled herself into Zoe’s side on the couch while watching TV and flitting over to the documents Zoe was reviewing for very quick, almost non existent peeks at the files.
“I didn’t bring Bradford’s evaluation home,” Zoe said, feeling Lucy’s eyes on her work.
“Why not?”
“You’re not supposed to read it.”
“He won’t know.”
“Doesn’t matter. We talked about this. There has to be a separation between work and our relationship. You and I being together is a total break of protocol that I wouldn’t risk for anyone else, but that’s all I can do. I can’t ignore any other rules.”
“Am I worth breaking protocol for?”
Zoe glanced at her then set her pen down. “You are, which is why I’m dating a rookie in the first place. You know most of the officers at the station don’t respect me, because I didn’t come up with them. Imagine if they found out I was also sleeping with a rookie.”
“You make it sound so dirty! I was supposed to go to Hollywood. Not Mid Wilshire. All of this wouldn’t be a problem if that were the case.”
“Except for the fact that women in blue aren’t as highly regarded already, but queer women? That’s tougher.”
“I don’t care. You’ve earned your rank, and someday after I totally crush my rookie year, I’ll earn a promotion someday, too.”
“As much as I love the way you think, Bradford is the toughest T.O. at the station. Focus on surviving him.”
“You wouldn’t happen to have any tips for to get him to like me?”
Zoe thought Lucy was so lovable that even the coldest heart would thaw given enough time around her, so she assured, “Keep impressing him.”
“Did he say he’s impressed with me?” She asked, heart heart skipping a beat at the thought that she could actually impress a man with a permanent scowl who constantly nitpicked everything she did.
“Not exactly, but I can’t tell you what he’s written about you.”
“Fine,” she surrendered.
“But,” Zoe began as she cradled her face, “you’re impressing me.”
“I am?” Lucy was on the brink of bursting.
“Yeah, honey, I’m very impressed. Keep up the good work.”
Failing to come up with the proper words to express her gratitude, Lucy decided it was best to tilt her head up and slot their lips together even past the point of breathlessness. She wanted to bottle up the feeling of happiness and safety and maybe the thrilling beginning of love that Zoe always inspired when they were alone. It made her hold her tighter, kiss her longer, and miss her the second they had to step into their roles as rookie and captain and not girlfriends.

As her Training Officer, Tim Bradford refused to get to know his rookie on a personal level. He wanted to maintain professional decorum in their shop. With the long hours and sometimes uneventful shifts, he was aware that other officers started to bond, and even Angela Lopez who claimed to be a good Training Officer started becoming more friendly with her rookie, Jackson West, within the first month that they started riding together. However, no amount of doe eyes or sunshine smiles from Lucy was going to wear him down. One night when he ended up at the same bar as Lucy, Jackson, and John, which was the entire new batch of rookies, he stayed in the corner with Angela to share one drink, averting his eyes from the rookies’ table, and stepped outside to leave soon after. Tim walked over to his truck, and then he heard the front door of the bar open at his back. He recognized those footsteps. He was getting to know Lucy and all of her nuances rather quickly, but only so far as their professional relationship extended. Turning to confirm his suspicion, he watched her stumble out of the corner of his eye and was about to traverse the parking lot and go to her side when a car pulled up.
Zoe saw how the beer had slowed Lucy’s walk, darkened her brown eyes, and pulled her lips into a lazy smile coupled with the fact that she wore knee-high leather boots and a skirt that left the slightest bit of honey skin of her thighs on display, and Zoe was reminded for the millionth time why she positively adored her girlfriend.
Lucy slid into the passenger seat as gracefully as she could manage and immediately leaned into Zoe. “Thanks for picking me up, sweetie. You’re my hero,” and then she went in for a somewhat messy but much needed kiss.
“We should get you home,” she finally said when Lucy pulled away slightly. She could taste the beer on her lips and smell it hanging in her hair.
“Yeah, take me to your place.”
“No, you should go to your apartment and sleep it off.”
“I can sleep in your bed,” she responded with a grin.
“Fine, but you have to wake up early. I don’t want you to be late for shift.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Lucy agreed before giving her a quick peck.
Zoe reached across her to help fasten her seatbelt even though Lucy squirmed.
“You’re getting handsy,” Lucy teased.
“Oh, you wish,” she replied then heard the definitive click of her seatbelt securing into place. “There. We can leave now.”
She put a finger under her chin. “Or, we can stay right here and make out.”
“I took a big enough risk coming to pick you up when you drunk texted me. What if one of your friends comes out at sees us?”
“They’ll be jealous. Well, Jackson’s gay, so he wouldn’t be, but John made a pass at me at the academy, so he might be a little jealous.”
“He made a pass at you? John Nolan thought he had a chance with you? You’re so out of his league.”
“You’re out of my league, but you still like me,” she said with a smirk.
Zoe always bordered on powerlessness when Lucy gave her that look of fondness mixed with deviousness and something just HER. Instead of saying a word, she switched the car’s gear back to drive and started the journey to her house.
Tim was positively frozen in his place, because he witnessed his rookie and his captain kissing and acting far too comfortably around each other, so he easily concluded that they were in a relationship. Lucy had been the first rookie in a while that showed any promise of success, and so he invested in her future with as much dedication as possible. Even if it would break his rookie’s heart, he had to say something. Tim hopped up into his truck as he swore under his breath, because he knew as much as he wanted to stay out of Lucy’s personal life, he had to get involved and tell his rookie she had to break up with her girlfriend that also happened to be their boss.
