Work Text:

There is a story about a prince who was said to have been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer and was cursed to slumber for the rest of his days. As the story goes, the evil sorcerer encased the sleeping prince in a glass coffin in the middle of an enchanted forest guarded by all manner of dangerous obstacles. It is said that to this day, the prince remains in his slumber awaiting for someone to save him from the evil sorcerer and wake him from his eternal sleep.

As with most tales, the details over the years have become muddled and the true story differs in many ways. While there are some details that ring true in the tale most people know, there are some major details in the real account that change the story’s entire meaning. If we are to know the truth it’s best to start from the beginning.

Once upon a time there was a prince who got lost on Time’s path. One day he accidentally ran into a young sorcerer who was destined to become one of the most powerful wizards of all time. As years passed they unexpectedly fell in love and all seemed well in the world. They were soon to be wed, but tragedy struck when the prince fell ill.

The prince was never supposed to have met the young sorcerer in his youth and Time started to correct the mistake that had been made. The prince was given a fate worse than death, he would soon fade from existence as if he had never been born.

No body.

No memory.

Not a single trace would remain of him in the world.

The sorcerer, not willing to accept such a fate, used all his knowledge and skill to craft a glass coffin that would freeze the prince in time until he could find a solution to save him. The sorcerer stored the glass coffin at the center of an enchanted forest. The forest itself was guarded by dangerous creatures and obstacles to protect the prince from harm. While most of the forest had a dark and forbidding atmosphere the clearing where the glass coffin was kept was quite beautiful. At the base of the coffin, narcissus flowers grew in honor of the prince’s mother almost as if they were watching over him.

Though the glass coffin did succeed in preserving the prince, it came with the price that to remain frozen in time meant that the prince would remain frozen in the same state he was in when he was placed in the coffin. No matter how much the sorcerer yearned for it, he could no longer touch or speak to his beloved if he wished for the prince to remain alive. And so the prince remains in indefinite slumber in his glass coffin until the day the sorcerer can wake him. They say that the sorcerer having achieved immortality still wanders the earth searching for a way to save his love and that he will continue to do so until he can reunite with his prince.
