drabble with author's notes

Summary:

Elphaba doesn't know what to do with herself. Galinda thinks she can help with that.

Notes:

I wrote this on my phone two years ago as an exercise in writing intimacy. I'm leaving in the notes I made as I wrote to help explain the jumps and my thought process. I don't know if I'll ever come back and finish it, but I hope what's there is at least enjoyable.

Work Text:

Elphaba and Galinda laid on their respective beds on either side of their shared dorm room; Galinda on her stomach and kicking her feet as she wrote in a pink notebook. Her pen (pink) sported a comically large feather (also pink) that Elphaba was sure would hit Galinda's face, what with the speed of her scribing. In staring so intently at the feather, it took Elphaba an extra second to realize why it had stopped moving— Galinda, her notebook now half-closed, stared back at her roommate, annoyance tinging her expression.

"Do you mind?" Galinda asked, herself clearly minding.

Elphaba cheeks flushed as she looked away. "Sorry," she mumbled, casting her eyes about for something else to focus on, preferably something she could engage in herself. Her gaze landed on a small compact mirror, open, in which Elphaba could see a reflection of Galinda's side of the room. Not better!

Wait a minute. Did she even own a compact? A closer look at the accessory brought to light the color of the casing, which was (of course) pink.

"Did you put this on my shelf?" Elphaba took the compact down and held it out toward Galinda, positioned to showcase the greatest amount of pink surface area possible.

[A/N: ok i want to get to a more exciting part now. this is fun n all, but i don't know how long it'll take me to build to the point i want to hit. ✌️ imma just skip there]

Elphaba held her pillow to her chest, head turned toward the headboard and away from her roommate. "Do you think anybody would ever want to kiss me?"

Galinda blinked. Oh, duh.

Galinda had just professed her expertise at handling social situations, and now a sense of hypocrisy seeped up through the floor and into her bones as she felt the hollow outline where her perfect response was supposed to be. No, she thought, attempting to calm herself, this is very clearly a personal situation, not a social one. Well, Galinda was no stranger to "fake it 'til you make it," and by golly, she always made it.

[A/N: idk I'm skipping around to the stuff I'm interested in writing lol]

Galinda scooted away from Elphaba and cringed slightly as she saw her friend's shoulders tense again. A minor setback, but she was mostly sure her next move would quickly undo the damage.

"Look at me." Galinda's voice was firm, but kind, warm with an affection that Elphaba recognized, but did not find familiar; one she realized that she desperately wanted to be familiar. That ache of want spoke from Elphaba's eyes as they met Galinda's, which were unwavering. Elphaba nervously licked her lips, then silently cursed herself for the action, afraid that the sight of normal, real-world pink against the unnatural backdrop of her green skin would shock Galinda back to her senses, but to Elphaba's surprise the other girl held her gaze.

Galinda had positioned her face very close to Elphaba's— Did she mean to be this close? Did I lean in this far without realizing it?— kneeling, though slightly raised (and holding her balance admirably).

[A/N: describing physicality is half of the job in this kind of writing, and l've forgotten some of the words for the ways bodies take the shapes they do. oops!

ok I'm either afraid to start or afraid it's too soon, or i like the build-up to the kiss more than the actually kissy part, or I'm afraid the rest of it is going to go too fast or be too boring or too predictable

I'm really enjoying this exercise! I'm glad i have a space to do it :3]

Galinda took Elphaba's chin in her hand, gently raised the other girl's face to meet hers, and paused once more. Elphaba could not decode her expression, though she wouldn't mind staying in that moment until she could, whether that was another few minutes or a century.

[A/N: ahhh I'm also afraid that it'll seem unnatural, or too contrived, or too cheesy]
