Recollections of the Past

Summary:

Mickey Mouse during his time in Wasteland recalls moments from his life and that of how his creator inspired many of the different sections that pay homage to the magic kingdom of Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Work Text:

When Mickey first saw the Wasteland or a small part of it in Gremlin Tim’s Park, it reminded him of the old days when Walt was still around as well as the memories of welcoming people to the magic kingdom of Disneyland,

After he sees Mean Street, it’s clear this place is a homage to their creator and the magic kingdom he built in Disneyland but seeing him holding Oswald’s hand felt very weird and uncomfortable.

Then after he is looking around the colorful burg of Ostown, it reminds him of his own home and the friends he misses though he pushes past it to help an old friend, Clarabelle.

Later when scaling the terrain and getting through the inert items, Mickey ponders whether he is truly a hero or is he just playing a role.

When he meets Oswald, he thinks of that moment and realizes the importance of that one careless moment.

When he sees Tomorrow City, he is reminded of the world on the move that was the New Tomorrowland do the 1960s but now is a relic of a bygone era much like many of the characters here.

When he sees the Rocket, memories of space exploration and the wonder of what could be out there blast through his mind.

When he encounters Smee, he is reminded of the story of Peter Pan, but not the way he remembers it.

When he comes to Skull Island, he sees traces of the colors and landscape that once stood admits the now crumbling rock formations.

When he comes to Bog Easy, it’s a creepy but serene place that reminds him of New Orleans Square for some reason,

When he first encounters the Lonsome Manor, he is reminded of the 999 happy haunts who made a mansion at Disneyland their home, he wonders if the Lonsome Ghosts ever feel like they were robbed of a chance to do what they love to play pranks and scare people without actually hurting or causing anyone too much trouble.

When he encounters the Mad Doctor, his memory of Pluto being kidnapped and him almost killed by a nightmare that he woke up from doesn’t settle his nerves knowing he’s behind the Blot and this crazy quack of a doctor.

When he encounters the Blot in all of his infamy, he feels that dread and despair that Oswald and the others feel when it almost seems as if Gus and Oswald are to be killed, he agrees to let the Blot take his heart to save them as he couldn’t let them pay for his own mistakes.

When Oswald looks to Mickey with a kind smile, he looks like he’s forgiven him but Mickey sees Ortensia and his heart melts finally knowing she’s back and that his mistakes have been corrected. Yet he still feels some guilt about the entire situation.

Yen Sid chose to leave the world like that for decades and yet he knew that he the intruder was going to fix his mistake, did that mean he intended to teach him a lesson of being more careful and appreciate his life.

As the two say farewell to one another, he wonders if he’ll ever see them again

But if anything this adventure has taught him, you can always count on Mickey Mouse for an adventure and a bit of mischief.
