Chapter Text
Scrambling for cover in the rainy night, a young girl shivered in the cold, a thin dress the only thing keeping her covered. Well, it wasn't originally a dress. It was actually once a pillow cover that she tore some holes into for her arms and head. She was only four years old and lost in a world that fought against her. She looked around her. It was so cold that night. The only thing she'd be able to use to keep warm was the decomposing piles of trash, and a few newspapers. She shuffled, grimacing at the smell of the trash. Her stomach growled and groaned from hunger, but she had nothing to eat. The alley was dark, and she was all alone. She was scared. Hurt. Cold. Hungry. She wanted to go home but didn't even know the meaning of the world anymore.
She cried, not knowing what else she could do.
Her sobs filled the empty alley, echoing in the night. But she heard footsteps and hid, not wanting the bad people to find her. "Hello?" A kind voice said. "I know you're there." She hesitated. What would happen if she was found? The footsteps were coming closer, and she tried to make herself as small as possible. "Young one, I won't hurt you. It's alright." She made herself even smaller in her form. She heard a gasp and felt something be draped over her. She looked up. A blonde man with messy hair and blue eyes was looking at her in concern. "Are you alright?" She broke down hearing those words. The man shook his head and reached out to her. "Come on. Nobody should be left to fend for themselves. Especially not someone as young as you are." He made no move to rush the girl, despite the rain and chill. He let her come to him. She was clearly scared and didn't know if she could trust him yet. She was so small in his jacket.
Yagi toshinori, better known as all might, had gone out for groceries to make dinner, when he heard crying coming from an alley. Of course, he couldn't just stand by and let the child cry. What if they were hurt? What is they were stuck? What if they were abandoned? No, he couldn't just stand by. Groceries be dammed. He could get takeout later. The little girl before him came first.
After a few minutes, the child hesitantly came closer to him, and grabbed onto him. He saw she wasn't really dressed, and made a mental note to call his partner and boyfriend Marai Sasaki. But first, he needed to get the child safe. "Little one, how would you like to come with me? My partner and I will see what we can do for you in the morning. For now, it's much too cold for you to stay here." She nods, and gently, he picks her up. She clings to him, and he walks her to the sidewalk where he left his abandoned umbrella. Picking up it, he does his best to situate the child in his arms, hold an umbrella, and make a call. He sighs and puts down the umbrella, taking out his phone, and making the call.
"Toshi? What is it? Did you forget the list again?"
"No, I've got it. But I think we need to get takeout. Something came up."
"Let me guess, another villain attack at the store?"
"No, not even close." He felt the little girl snuggle closer to him. "Mirai, I found a child." It was quiet for a second. "I think she's homeless. I found her by herself in the alleyway near the store, and I can't just leave her there." A sigh.
"Alright. Bring her home. I'll order some takeout for the three of us then." He didn't sound the happiest, but Toshinori couldn't say he blamed him. A child was a lot, and he didn't know what to do either. But seeing the little girl in his arms clinging so tight, he knew he couldn't just abandon her again.
He'd have to take her in.
Arriving back at his home- which despite them both being pros was not fancy at all- he opened the door to see Mirai sitting on the sofa in casual clothes, a cup of water in hand.
At least, he hoped it was water.
"I'm back." Mirai stood up and went over to the two of them, seeing the little girl was passed out. His heart melted at her state. Toshi gave him a kiss on the cheek while he observed the girl. Gently, he took her and tutted.
"Was she only wearing this?"
"She was. I couldn't take her into the store due to the fact she was so cold. She needs a hot meal and bath as soon as possible." Mirai nodded, laying the girl on the couch. "She's timid right now. Could you start a bath for her? I think it's best I stay near her for the time being."
"Sure. Food's going to be here soon just so you know. I ordered dumplings."
"Thank you." Toshinori sat on the couch, laying the girls head on his lap, and draping a blanket over her sleeping form. He knew he'd have to wake her soon, but for now she could sleep. Poor thing looked exhausted.
A few minutes passed, and the food arrived. Toshinori gently got up and got it for the three of them but heard sniffles when he got back to the living room. He hurried over to the couch to see the little girl awake, and ready to cry again. "Hey, it's okay." He put the bag down on the coffee table and held her close. "You're alright young one." He comforted. "I wasn't far."
"But you... you gone." He didn't hear her speak before now and thought she couldn't. But he smiled a little.
"I went to grab food for the three of us."
"Three?"
"Yes, three. You, me, and Mirai."
"Who?"
"My boyfriend." She nods, and looks over to the table. "Do you want some dumplings?" She nods without a second thought. He chuckles. Mirai walks back into the room, and smiles seeing the girl awake.
"I see she's hungry." He mentions seeing her eating three dumplings that were each the size of her little fist. "If she's able to eat this much, that's good. Means she's been eating regularly enough that her stomach can handle it." Toshinori nods.
"Little one, this is Mirai." He nods in greeting. "I'm Toshinori. What's your name?"
"Y/n." Mirai nods in approval.
"How old are you?" With her mouth full, she holds up four fingers. "Four, huh? You'll be getting your quirk soon then." She nods, finishing up her last dumpling as the adults eat. "Y/n, I have to step out for a few minutes to make a call. Would you mind staying here with Mirai?" She nods. He pats her head gently. "I'll be back in a few." He takes his phone and leaves to make a call, likely to someone who wouldn't mind picking up some little girl's clothes at nine at night.
The little girl, y/n, looked at Mirai, and smiled gently at her. "Hello there." He looks at her. "You don't know me, and that's okay. You're scared of me. That's okay too. But me and toshi won't hurt you." She cocks her head to the side.
"Toshi?"
"That's what I call toshinori. It's a nickname."
"What's that?" She got a little closer to him, curious.
"It's something you call someone that's not really their name. It's like a hero name but more casual." She nods, sort of getting it. She points at him.
"You have nickname?" He nods.
"I work as a Pro hero, of course I have a nickname." She waits for him to say it. "I'm known as sir nighteye." She had stars on her eyes at this.
"Cool! Toshi?"
"Toshi's also a pro hero. Do you know All might?" She shakes her head no. "That's surprising. most children know him by that name." But then again, she isn't like most children, is she? Well, she can learn who he is over time. "He's a super strong hero, who saved a thousand people from one accident. He's ranked number one actually! He's really a great man." She looked awestruck.
"What hero do?"
"Heroes save people. ordinary people like you."
"Save from bad men?"
"Yes, we save people from the bad men." Toshinori came back.
"I made a call, and I found someone who can bring some of his daughters old toddler clothes, but he's not happy about it."
"Endeavor?"
"Endeavor." Toshinori paused. "Well, actually his wife's bringing them along with a few more things for her. She's going to need them."
"In the meantime, let's get her in the bath. We can throw her in one of my shirts for the night, or until she gets here."
"You sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure."
While toshinori was helping y/n take a bath, Todoroki Rei came by with a bag of clothes and a few young child things, including a stuffed animal for the little girl. "Again, thank you so much todoroki-san. It really means a lot to us."
"It's no big deal. Anything to get out of the house." He noticed the bruises on her, and sighed.
"Renji's still violent?"
"I... It's nothing."
"You can try to get him arrested-"
"What good would it do? He's got control of the money and all that. My kids would be homeless in a minute if I tried to get away. And if I did, where would I go?"
"You-"
"I'm fine, really. I should go. It's getting late. Make sure the little girl you two are taking care of is in good hands, okay?"
"We will. Thank you." Rei walked away, and Mirai closed the door. Silently he went upstairs to see toshinori drying the child off.
"Rei get here?"
"She just left actually." He held up the bag. "They might be a bit big, but they'll do."
"I dress myself!" She said, and the adults nodded.
"Alright. But if you need help, let us know." Y/n nodded, and was left to get dressed. The two adults were right outside the closed door, talking about where she would sleep.
"Maybe she should sleep in in our bed with us." Toshinori said.
"You think she'll have trouble sleeping alone?"
"I think she'll be scared if she wakes up alone in an unfamiliar place. I think we should be there to help her if she needs it. Besides, I can already see we're both getting attached." Mirai sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose through his glasses.
"I know. But we're not registered foster parents toshi. We can't keep her."
"We can become them though. Surely, it's not that hard." It was silent for a beat. "I juts don't want to see her end up on the streets again. I won't allow it." Mirai nods.
"Alright. In the morning, we'll see what we can do. For now, she sleeps in the bed with us then." The door opened, and the small girl stepped out. She rubbed her eyes, her pajama's hanging loose on her small frame. They would work for the night. "Y/n, you ready for bed?" She nods, and mirai hands her the plush. She grabs it hesitantly, confused. "It's a f/a. it's called a plush since it isn't real. It's soft, and you can snuggle up to it. You name them too, but we can work on that later." She nods in understanding, a yawn coming from her. Toshinori picks her up, her new and first plush still in hand, and she rubs her eyes again.
"Alright y/n, time for bed." The three head to the bedroom together, and the adults quickly get changed into nightclothes, before snuggling up to their new child. Toshinori sees she's already on the verge of falling asleep. "Go to sleep. We'll be here for you in the morning." The little girl closes her eyes completely, and her breathing evens out.
"You're right."
"Hm?"
"I am getting attached already." Mirai looks up. "We've got to foster her. Hopefully adopt her." Toshinori smiled and gives mirai a quick yet loving kiss.
"I couldn't agree more."
