Since Douma left Kanae on the brink of death, Shinobu began to have nightmares of her sister dying. During those two years she would fall asleep next to her sister and that would help chase away her nightmares.
After two years Kanae woke up, still the nightmares did not leave Shinobu. Every night she had similar nightmares, always with the same ending, her sister dead in her arms; she always woke up sweating or crying, or both. Then she would go to her sister's room, checkinv if she was alive and well, before climbing into bed so she could get some sleep. However, during the last year her health was out of control because she was not resting well. She'd rather stay up all night than go to sleep and then wake up after a horrible nightmare. Even if she didn't want to sleep, sometimes she simply couldn't stay awake anymore and would succumb to sleep, but then wake up again with a nightmare.
In the morning, Kanae would ask her if she was okay and if she wanted to sleep with her, but Shinobu always denied it, saying that she is too old to sleep with her older sister and that she always woke up next to her because she was a sleepwalker.
However, Kanae knew that her little sister was lying to her and that she was hiding something.
You might be wondering why Shinobu didn't go to sleep with her sister if she was going to go at midnight anyway. Well, that's simple, she didn't want Kanae to know about her nightmares. She didn't want to show weakness, because her older sister is very strong and always seemed to be proud of Shinobu, so she didn't want to dissapoint her.
However, just when Shinobu thought her nightmares were going away, one night after she went to sleep, the nightmares came back and this was the worst she had had in a long time.
It began with Kanae fighting Douma, Shinobu tried to move but couldn't and was frozen in place. Douma strike her in one of her ribs and Kanae was seriously injured, then...
He bit her on the neck, Shinobu tried to scream and move or do something, but she couldn't, she felt helpless, her heart wanted to jump out of her chest, she was breathing hard and tears fell like a waterfall.
Then Douma disappeared and in his place was Muzan Kibutsuji...
And her older sister was no longer her older sister, her eyes were red and without her characteristic understanding and loving gaze, without that sparkle in her eyes, instead it was replaced by emptiness. Her body was much taller, she had a horn on the side of her forehead, her hair was all purple with shades of pink, and her veins were more pronounced. She seemed evil...
"This was all your fault, Shinobu," Kanae told her laughing maniacly. "You killed me..."
And then...
Kanae lunged at her, making her fall backwards and then, as she was about to bite Shinobu… Shinobu screamed.
"Sister!" Shinobu shouted, immediately sitting up on her bed. Her sweat mixes with tears and she breathes heavily.
Kanae, who was asleep a few moments ago, hears the scream and immediately wakes up.
"Shinobu..." she whispers.
Kanae quickly grabs her katana and runs to her little sister's room.
When Kanae enters, she finds Shinobu crying in bed, gasping for air and her entire body shaking.
"Oh my, Shinobu," Kanae says, her face in a deep frown of concern, she puts her katana aside and immediately heads to the bed to help her little sister.
Kanae sits down in front of Shinobu and grabs her hands, making her jump at the touch.
"Shinobu, it's me, your sister." Kanae says, but Shinobu is too scared.
"Honey, look at me," Kanae says in her calm voice, placing one of her soft hands on her little sister's cheek, brushing away her tears.
Shinobu then looks at her, seeming as if she is more aware…
“K-kanae?”
“Yes, yes it’s me” softly, Kanae says.
Shinobu without thinking twice lungs to her sister, seeking for comfort in her older sister warm embrace, she buries her head in between the crook of her sister's neck.
Kanae was amazed, but quickly return the embrace, puting one hand on the back of her sister's head.
She was definitely not expecting this, it took her by surprise, because when Shinobu was thirteen, she claimed to be too grown up for her sister to keep babying her. Obviously Kanae didn't really cared about what she said, because no matter how old Shinobu get, she would always be Kanae's baby... she was her baby sister.
Then one day Shinobu exploded and they had an argument. After that, Kanae did as Shinobu wished. This maked them both fall apart, but when Shinobu couldn’t take it anymore, the fight with Douma happened and Shinobu felt very guilty, she should have been by her sister’s side the whole time. That's why when Kanae woke up, Shinobu had been her shadow at all times. Kanae didn't question her because she had always enjoyed spending all the time with her little sister. Then, it started worrying her, because she didn't know why Shinobu was being like that. It was so unlike the fourteen year old Shinobu she knew, then again it had been two years since then and people change after all.
Kanae snapped out of her thoughts, as Shinobu clung even tighter to her, still sobbing. It broke her heart to see her little sister like this. Shinobu was 16 years old, almost 17, but her smaller body, and state in the moment made her look so young. Kanae just wanted to take away all of Shinobu's pain, it always broke her soul to see Shinobu cry.
"Hun, let me look at you," Kanae said softly, trying to pull her out of the hug, so she could see her little sister's eyes.
Shinobu didn't want to let go of her sister's hug, thinking that her sister might disappear. Kanae noticed it.
"Please... don't leave me"
"Love, I won't leave, I'm here and I won't leave you, never, ever." Kanae ran her hand through shinobu's hair, gently massaging her sister's scalp with her nails.
"Now, now, let me see that beautiful face of yours," she said lovingly.
Shinobu free herself from her older sister's warm embrace, although she was a little reluctant at first.
"There it is, sweetheart" Kanae placed both hands on her sister's cheeks. Kanae then puts their foreheads together, making Shinobu look at her with teary eyes.
Kanae couldn't help it and started crying herself, she then gave her little sister two kisses on her forehead and hugged her again, putting her head above Shinobu's...
Shinobu didn't want to talk about the nightmare at the moment, so before drifting to sleep, she though of how fortunate she was of having the best older sister in the world...
