Work Text:
Remus hadn't told anyone about him being trans until he was in 5th year. Obviously, he was scared. He didnt want to lose his friends, but he was uncomfortable whenever certain terms were used, or whenever someone called him his other name. He made a point to tell Lily first, as she was always the most understanding.
---
"Lily? I can be honest with you right?” Remus's voice was quiet as Lily closed her book and looked up at him. “Of course you can, Remus, and you know that. Whats wrong? You look sad.” That made him smile slightly, she always knew how he felt, without him saying anything.
“I want to tell them- well James and Sirius at least about me being trans. But, i dont know how and im kind of well scared?”
The thought process couldn't be perfectly transferred into actual words, but he thought that would be good enough for Lily to understand.
“Well, I think thats amazing Remus. I dont feel theres any reason to be scared. They love you so much, and so do I.” In Remus's mind, his friends already had to deal with enough of his problems, and unlike he thought at the start, they stuck with him. It could've been because they felt sorry, or they were just making fun.
But he had known them for 5 years, and they were his best friends.
“I think so to but, I dont know how to tell them.” Lily pulled him into a hug, “I think you can do it. You just have to say exactly what you want to say. Dont try and make it easy for them, if they have questions than answer. Do what is easiest for you.” Oh, she always knew exactly what Remus needed to hear.
---
It took a few more weeks before he built up the confidence he needed. The other two boys had just gotten out of their detention with Filch, and now they were headed back to the dorm.
Remus had a plan to wait a while after they got back, just to ease any sort of tension that might have built up if he was too nervous. But, unlike he suspected, he was hardly nervous. He knew what he had to say, and he was going to say it.
James went for a shower, and Sirius was playing music at a medium volume while laying on his bed. It took about an hour or two to get them both to stay in the room with out straight up saying that Remus needed to talk to them. He eventually had to start the conversation though.
“James, Sirius, we need to talk, well more so i need to talk and you guys need to listen. At least for a bit.” Remus curled his hands together in his lap as he sat up proper on his bed.
Both James and Sirius were sat on the bed right next to his. The music had stopped a while ago, the dorm was rather quiet. It made the atmosphere more tense than was probably needed, or wanted for that matter.
“We’re always here to listen Rem, whatever you need.” James was the one to break the uncomfortable silence, and it let Remus calm down a little bit. A sharp intake of breath and a deep exhale later, Remus started to talk.
“Okay, so- i dont really know how to say this actually. But, I guess what i want to say is that, im a boy. And- well i want you guys to call me a boy."
Sirius looked confused, and James was pushing a hand through his messy hair. It didnt take long for the minute or so of silence to make Remus anxious.
"I mean, of course I'd understand if you guys didnt want to be my friend any more. Obviously i was hoping that didnt happen, but i cant control what happens- or your opinions. I dont blame you if you think of me any different or anything, i mean your obviously going to think diff-" he was cut off by one of the other boys tackling him and pulling him into a hug.
Remus did reciprocate the hug immediately though. There was tears in his eyes now, he thought the worst of what was going to happen. "Moony, we love you either way. Nothing could change that, ever."
It was Sirius's voice now, he hadn't spoken very much yet. But, he was now hugging both James and Remus, though it wasn't a very functional hug as the three were mostly just laying in a pile.
"Our Moony, our lovely boy" James mumbled into his hair, then planted a kiss on his forehead.
The three stayed curled up until morning, when Remus was sweating rivers from being in the middle of the pile. He couldn't move because of Sirius's arms that were wrapped around him, like they were still hugging. James was laying behind him and had an arm thrown over the other two.
Needless to say, it was comfortable enough to fall asleep again
