Work Text:
Dazai drove as fast as possible, really. It wasn't like he wanted to be late to his and Chuuya's anniversary dinner, it was just that he got held up at the agency sometimes. He could almost see it now, Chuuya standing in the kitchen with his arms crossed and a 'where-the-hell-have-you-been?' look on his face.
Dazai fiddled with his key at the door, moving the fasted he ever had when not physically in danger. He pushed open the door to Chuuya's ridiculously sized house and stepped in.
Dazai shuffled off his shoes and shouldered his coat, peaking his head around corners to try and decipher what room Chuuya was in. He was going to try and get him with the element of surprise so he wouldn't be so mad. It was of no use.
He decided Chuuya was in the kitchen, and wandered through the halls as quietly as possible, gripping a bouquet behind his back.
He leaned on the doorway, watching the redhead stand in front of the stove. His hair had grown out considerably, though still uneven, it tumbled over his shoulders neatly. He wore one of Dazai's button-up shirts, which most definitely didn't fit him properly. The sleeves were shoved up to his elbows messily, and he had to adjust them every two seconds. He had abandoned his slacks, now just wearing boxers.
Dazai's ogling was cut short when Chuuya turned around. He jumped so hard he almost burned his hand on the skillet.
"Sneaky bastard," he said, only a twinge of fondness peeking out of his false annoyance.
Dazai grinned, pulling the flowers from behind his back and presenting them. "Sorry I'm late."
Chuuya let him kiss his head, examining the roses. He sat them on the counter and crossed his arms, just as Dazai had imagined. "Don't be sorry," he said, though insincere.
Upon realizing Dazai was unshaken by his stern tone Chuuya rolled his eyes, scoffing. "You're late every year."
Dazai put on a fake pout. "I know, I'm sorry! It's like someone at the agency realizes I have somewhere to be and give me the most work possible."
Chuuya rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Sure."
Dazai got down two plates and two wine glasses, watching Chuuya put the flowers in the same vase he put them in every year. He sat, letting Chuuya serve him a little more aggressively than necessary.
Chuuya sat across from him at the table. He had a dining room, a fancy one at that. However, he preferred to eat at the tiny two person table in his kitchen by the bay window.
Dazai examined his hand as he ate, chopsticks perched in his fingers neatly. His gloves were off, showing off soft skin that rarely ever saw the light of day. More importantly, the promise ring on his right ring finger.
"Do you have a starring problem?" Chuuya interrupted.
"I can't admire my boyfriend on our anniversary?"
"Admire your meal, prick."
Dazai did as told, like usual when it came to Chuuya. They finished their meals, Chuuya hovering beside Dazai as he washed the dishes.
He dried his hands before placing one on Chuuya's hip and pulling him into a kiss.
"Do you want your gift?" Dazai asked as he pulled away.
Chuuya made a face. "I thought we agreed no gifts this year?"
"You got me something, didn't you?"
Chuuya rolled his eyes. "Yes. But, you don't get it now. What'd you get me?"
Dazai pulled a little black box from his pocket, popping it open to reveal a ring. "The gift of not being able to propose first."
Chuuya glared as he pulled a box from his own pocket, popping it to show the ring he'd gotten him.
Dazai grinned, satisfied at his plan-ruining. "You absolute asshole," Chuuya said between small laughs he tried to cover up.
Dazai took his hands, which he was slightly surprised to see Chuuya comply with. He pulled off his promise ring, slipping it onto his left hand and putting the new ring with it.
Chuuya glanced down at his hand. "They match," he noted, observing how they fitted together like a puzzle. Dazai hummed an affirmation, letting Chuuya slip the ring he'd bought onto his finger.
"How'd you know I was going to propose?" Chuuya asked, tugging him down for a kiss.
Between kisses, Dazai managed a, "Just a feeling," he paused. "Also, I track you calls when I get bored."
Chuuya slapped his arm.
They found themselves in their bedroom that night, Chuuya laying on his chest as Dazai toyed with his hair. Chuuya pressed their hands together, letting their rings touch.
"Osamu?" He mumbled, half asleep. Dazai hummed, pausing the hand in his hair to show he was listening. "I love you."
It wasn't uncommon for the two to say the phrase. They said it rather often, really. However, they usually didn't use it so domestically. It always seemed to pass their lips when they were apologizing, or looking death in the eye. More importantly, Chuuya never said it first.
Dazai smiled. "I love you too, Chuuya."
"It's not cool when you say it."
"Alright, asshole. Happy anniversary."
"Happy anniversary."
