It just took his (singular but currently double-bodied) friend having an unfortunate (though understandable) public breakdown, the world being on fire (a regrettable side effect), his former lover attempting to properly do his (technically former) job for once, and being offered tea by the one other person in the Kingdom who seemed to tolerate him.
Lord Ballister Blackheart, archvillain, still loved his archnemesis, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, (once) Champion of the Realm. Who was going to be killed while trying to kill Ballister's sidekick.
Unless Dr. Blitzmeyer agreed to help and his plan actually worked.
