Work Text:
Isagi Yoichi considers himself to be an average nineteen-year-old. He attends college, spends his summers working at a supermarket, and hangs out with his friends in his free time. He’s content with the way things are, but they could always be better.
It’s a quiet night when everything changes. Isagi stands on his balcony, looking up at the sky above him. He’s not a conspiracy theorist, but he thinks occasionally about what lies beyond the clouds, if someone’s watching him closely.
Isagi watches as the moon shines light into his dark apartment. He smiles softly. Even as the city sleeps, it’s nice to know the sky will always be there when he looks up.
The sticky summer heat has transitioned into a gentle breeze, but Isagi can’t hear anything over the sound of late-night traffic.
Isagi turns on his heel, ready to go back inside, when something hits him on the head. He leans down to pick up the object, quickly noting that the can has no label.
He looks up to see an unidentifiable flying object, not unlike the ones he’s seen on TV. Isagi is momentarily blinded by a purple flash of light, and when he opens his eyes, a boy lies in front of him, curled up in the fetal position. His thumb is in his mouth, and he’s sleeping so peacefully that Isagi is scared to wake him up.
The boy’s hair is wet, and he looks like a cat rescued from the rain. Isagi is frozen in place for what feels like five minutes, just staring at the boy—creature?—in front of him.
After a moment, the boy slowly opens his eyes, and Isagi feels his heart stop. His eyes are golden in the moonlight, captivating Isagi and keeping him in place. What the hell is he supposed to do in this situation?
“Hello?” The boy whispers. His voice is soft, mouth curled into a smile. Isagi is just surprised he can understand him.
“You can speak Japanese?” He asks. The boy just blinks at him, and Isagi notices that he’s covered in a thin blue film. He silently wonders if he should check the boy for injuries.
The boy tilts his head. “Japanese?” He repeats. He slowly sits up, taking in his surroundings. His hair is unlike anything Isagi has ever seen, sporting dyed blonde ends and bangs that frame his face.
Isagi notices the boy shivering, and he rushes to open the door. He’s wearing clothes that remind Isagi of Star Trek, and he has little time to decide if inviting a mysterious entity into his house is a good decision.
“Are you cold?” Isagi asks, and the boy nods. He opens the door, gesturing for the boy to follow him inside.
Once the door is closed and the blinds have been shut, Isagi wraps a towel around the boy’s shoulders. Isagi leaves to make a pot of tea, but by the time he comes back, the boy is passed out on his couch. His teeth are a little sharp and his skin is almost luminescent, and Isagi is sure there’s an alien in his apartment.
🛸
The boy wakes up after an hour, but Isagi figures it’s only a matter of time before he falls asleep again.
Isagi hands him an old band t-shirt and a pair of pants. “Change into these.” He says, directing the boy to his small bathroom. He’s not sure how much the boy knows about human life, but he’s ready to find out.
The boy comes back within ten minutes, and while Isagi should let him rest, he needs answers.
“What’s your name?” He asks.
The boy smiles. “Bachira Meguru.” He sits down beside Isagi, crossing his legs. “What’s yours?”
“Isagi Yoichi.” He replies.
Bachira’s smile is so bright it rivals the moon. “Nice to meet you, Isagi!”
“How old are you?” Isagi asks. As the question leaves his mouth, a hundred more come to mind. Do aliens have ages? How many more are out there? What the hell is going on?
“Nineteen!” Bachira replies.
“Same as me.” Isagi mumbles. Isagi’s next question is more complicated, and he doesn’t expect a straight answer. “Why are you here?”
Bachira shrugs. “My mom’s been talking about sending me to earth for a while now.”
Bachira is nothing like the aliens he’s seen on TV, but the possibility of him being evil is always there. “You’re not here to probe me, right?”
Bachira laughs, shaking his head. “I like you already.”
Isagi lifts his cup to his lips. “Where are you from?”
Bachira looks out the window, gazing at the endless sky above them. “I wasn’t good in school,” he replies. “Maybe…two galaxies over?”
School? Isagi thinks. Perhaps aliens and humans are more alike than he thought. Isagi’s phone buzzes in his pocket, and his eyes widen as he stares at the time. It’s nearly the witching hour, and Isagi already knows it’ll be hard to wake up in the morning.
“How long will you be here?” Isagi asks.
“Forever—I hope.” Bachira replies.
Isagi’s heart softens. “You can stay here if you want.” He says without thinking. After all, what other option is there? If his mom were here, she’d make a speech about fate, and how Bachira was destined to land on his balcony.
Bachira’s eyes widen. “Really?”
Isagi nods. Bachira looks so excited about the prospect of living with him that he’s practically vibrating on the spot. Maybe it’s the lack of sleep, but Isagi finds it cute.
Isagi yawns. “It’s really late,” he says. He stands up from the couch. “You can have the bed.”
Bachira is a quick learner, and he knows exactly where to find Isagi’s bedroom. Isagi has no problem sleeping on the couch, given that Bachira’s journey must have been long and uncomfortable. Isagi wonders if Bachira slept standing up, suspended in one of those futuristic capsules.
“Do you want me to leave the light on?” Isagi asks, and Bachira shakes his head. Before leaving the room, Isagi smiles softly. “Goodnight, Bachira.”
“Goodnight, Isagi!” is the last thing Isagi hears before he passes out on the couch.
🛸
Isagi wakes up to his alarm ringing in his ears. It does the job, and his eyes shoot open as he sits up. His back aches—he’s not used to sleeping on the couch.
Isagi feels a presence beside him, and he looks over to see Bachira curled up on the other side of the couch. He’s fast asleep, and Isagi rolls onto the floor, careful not to wake him. Isagi doesn’t dwell on it, because he’s running out of time.
According to his boss, being on time is the same as being late. He’s been in a bad mood these days, and Isagi doesn’t want to risk pissing him off. Isagi pulls on his uniform and runs a comb through his hair, rushing through his usual morning routine. The dark circles under his eyes are more noticeable than usual, and Isagi hopes no one will comment on them.
Sunlight streams in through the window, covering Isagi’s apartment in a golden glow. Isagi would rather be playing soccer on the beach instead of working behind a cash register. Luckily, the weekend forecast predicts perfect weather.
Isagi looks over at Bachira, and he wonders if aliens eat three meals a day. Does he need to go grocery shopping?
Isagi is about to leave, tucking his keys into his pocket, when Bachira walks into the kitchen.
Bachira rubs his eyes. “Good morning.”
Cute, Isagi thinks. He keeps the thought to himself, instead choosing to smile. “Good morning.”
“Are you leaving?” Bachira asks.
Isagi nods. “I have work, but I’ll be back home in a few hours.”
Bachira stares at him curiously. “Can I come with you?”
Isagi stops. His boss rarely checks the break room, and it would be easier to keep an eye on Bachira, lest he burn Isagi’s apartment down. No one complains when Chigiri’s boyfriend shows up during his break, and Isagi hopes Bachira will receive the same treatment.
“Sure,” Isagi replies. He waits for Bachira to change and comb his hair before they hurry out the door.
🛸
“What is this place?” Bachira whispers as Isagi leads him inside the building.
Isagi clocks in, waving to his coworkers as he walks over to the break room. Bachira follows closely behind him, and Isagi notices more eyes on him than usual.
“This is a grocery store.” Isagi says. “You can buy almost anything here.”
Bachira’s eyes widen. “Anything?”
Isagi smiles. “Almost,” he says. “I’ll show you around during my break.”
Isagi leaves Bachira in the break room with the TV set to a sports match, and he hurries over to his assigned counter.
Luckily for him, mornings are never busy. It’s a weekday, and the rush has yet to occur. Isagi takes the opportunity to check the register and restock items in the nearest aisle.
At nine thirty, Chigiri wanders over to his counter, long hair pinned away from his face. Kunigami hasn’t arrived yet, so Chigiri’s good mood is suspicious. Chigiri nudges him in the side. “Who’s the arm candy?”
Isagi flushes. “That’s Bachira,” he says. “He’s just a friend.”
Chigiri shoots him an unimpressed look. “You’ve never brought a friendhere before.” He’s not wrong—Isagi has never brought anyone to work before.
“He’s staying with me,” Isagi says. “I didn’t want him to burn the house down.”
Chigiri stares into the break room window, where Bachira is sitting, eyes fixed on the TV. “He’s really into that game.”
Isagi smiles softly. “He’s never seen it before.” He says, and when Chigiri raises an eyebrow, he comes up with an excuse on the fly. “He’s not from here.”
Chigiri opens a box of gum, throwing the plastic into the trash. “A foreigner?”
“You could say that,” Isagi replies. “This is his first time seeing a TV.” It’s a stupid lie, but if Chigiri sees through it, he doesn’t say anything.
“He seems sweet,” Chigiri says. They haven’t spent more than ten hours together, but Isagi is inclined to agree.
A customer appears by Chigiri’s counter, and he’s forced to step away. After he leaves, Isagi takes another look at Bachira through the window. He’ll have to ask him about the game later.
The rest of Isagi’s morning is uneventful. A customer asks about tablet models, and when Isagi takes them to the tech counter, he finds his coworker, Reo, flirting with Nagi, the resident tech expert. Isagi is not-at-all surprised when he sees Nagi engrossed in a video game as Reo stares at him with hearts in his eyes.
Isagi rolls his eyes. “Can’t you guys wait until your break?”
Reo sighs, reluctantly walking away from the counter. “Jealousy is an ugly color on you, Isagi-kun!”
Unfortunately for him, Reo is an exceptional worker, and Nagi is a genius. They’re valuable, and Isagi is quite fond of them.
Like clockwork, Kunigami, Chigiri’s boyfriend, shows up around noon with several cups of coffee. Isagi grins, and Kunigami gives him a pat on the back.
“You’re a lifesaver, man!” Isagi says.
Isagi and Chigiri make their way to the break room, and Bachira’s face lights up. “Isagi!” He turns around to face him. “You’re back.” Isagi sits down beside him, and Bachira points to the TV. “What are they playing?”
“Soccer,” Isagi replies.
Bachira’s eyes sparkle. “Can you teach me how to play?”
“Sure,” Isagi says. “I used to play in high school.”
Bachira moves closer. “Were you good?”
“I guess so,” he replies. “I haven’t played in a while—don’t expect too much.”
Bachira laughs, high and soft. He opens his mouth to say something, but he’s interrupted by Chigiri pulling up a chair and sitting next to them.
“We haven’t met yet,” he says, outstretching a hand. “I’m Chigiri.”
Bachira eagerly shakes his hand. “Nice to meet you!” He exclaims. “I’m Bachira.”
“Your Japanese is really good!” Chigiri says.
Kunigami hurries over, wrapping an arm around Chigiri’s shoulders. He laughs nervously. “You can’t just say that to people.”
Chigiri rolls his eyes. “It’s a compliment!”
Bachira beams, eyes glowing under the fluorescent lights. “Thank you!” He’s so earnest, it makes Isagi’s heart ache. He reaches out, gently running a hand through Chigiri’s hair. “Your hair is so pretty!” He says.
“Ah—thank you.” Chigiri normally hates it when people touch his hair, but this time, he doesn’t seem to mind. Kunigami stares at them, smiling softly.
“What are you drinking?” Bachira asks.
“Coffee,” Isagi replies.
“Coffee.” Bachira repeats, balancing the word on his tongue.
Isagi nods, pushing the cup toward him. “Here—have a sip of mine.”
Bachira lifts the cup to his lips, and he gags. “That’s gross.” He says, his usual smile replaced with a grimace.
“Too bitter?” Isagi asks, and Bachira nods.
Chigiri moves his chair closer. “You’ll probably like mine better.”
Bachira takes a sip of Chigiri’s drink, and his eyes light up. “It’s really good!” He says, grinning. “Thank you, Chigirin.”
Chigiri’s eyes widen at the nickname, and Kunigami chuckles. Chigiri spends five minutes complaining about their boss before he drags Kunigami out of the break room. Isagi tries not to think about they’ll be doing while they’re gone.
Isagi is left alone with Bachira, but the silence is light. Since they’ll be living together, Isagi figures he should lay it all out, say what’s on his mind.
“Bachira,” Isagi begins, “is there a reason you didn’t stay in bed last night?” He asks. “Was it cold? The AC was on, but I can turn it off if you want—”
Bachira shakes his head. “Just got lonely.” He replies.
Isagi smiles softly, and he nods. Being virtually isolated in space sounds like a sad existence. He hasn’t asked about Bachira’s life outside of earth, just in case it’s a sensitive subject, but he hopes Bachira will open up to him eventually.
“I’m off in three hours,” Isagi says. “Then I’ll show you around.”
Bachira reaches up, gently patting his head. “You’re the best, Isagi!”
Isagi goes back to work with a slight blush covering his cheeks. Before he can clock back in, Kunigami gives him a good-natured slap on the back. “Nice going, Isagi. He’s really sweet.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Isagi turns around, but Kunigami has already left the building.
🛸
Isagi quickly gets used to living with Bachira. From the moment Isagi clocks out of work and gives Bachira a tour of the grocery store, he finds himself endeared by the other boy’s childlike wonder.
Bachira gets excited about going to the car wash, marvels at the way rainbow soap slides down the windows and gets washed away. Bachira accompanies Isagi on bike rides, pointing out everything he finds interesting.
Bachira even gets a job. Kunigami quickly takes a liking to him, and soon enough, Bachira is working at his sporting goods store. Bachira insists on watching soccer with Isagi in their free time, not that he minds.
Aside from a few quirks, Bachira is incredibly humanlike. He can smell and hear Isagi coming from a mile away, which freaked him out during the first few days. His eyes glow in the dark, which proves to be helpful when the power goes out. His fangs have gotten duller since the day they met, but they remind Isagi of a neighborhood cat from his childhood.
Every time Isagi has a question about aliens, Bachira is eager to answer. Isagi sometimes worries about him accidentally sharing classified information with the wrong person. He knows Bachira can handle himself, but the urge to protect him never leaves.
Bachira reignites a passion for life Isagi had forgotten. He looks for flowers between the cracks and plucks them, tucking the prettiest ones behind Isagi’s ear. He sings silly little songs regardless of who’s listening. He makes coffee concoctions and encourages Isagi to try them, even though they taste like liquid diabetes. Even after a long shift at the store, he comes home to Isagi with a smile on his face and sparkles in his eyes.
Isagi tries to ignore the way his face heats up when Bachira leans exceptionally close, tries to forget the way his heart thumps when Bachira wraps his arms around Isagi’s waist. Isagi chalks the incidents up to Bachira’s limited grasp of human social cues.
Bachira is cute and kind. Isagi enjoys spending time with him, and the last thing he wants is to fuck it all up by involving his complicated feelings.
🛸
Isagi stares at the TV, eyes narrowed on the subtitles. Chigiri recommended him a new show, but it’s an American program. Isagi hasn’t seriously studied English since high school, but he’s too proud to watch the dubbed version. After all, he could benefit from learning another language.
It’s a Saturday, and Isagi has no plans. Chigiri and Kunigami are visiting the mountains, and Nagi and Reo are moving into their new apartment. Isagi increases the volume a bit, just to drown out the sound of the shower.
Ever since Bachira landed on his balcony, his life has become a lot less lonely. Sure, Isagi has friends, but Bachira understands him, matches him perfectly.
Isagi notices movement in his peripheral vision, and he turns his head to see Bachira standing in the living room—completely naked.
Isagi turns bright red. “Bachira,” he manages, “what the hell are you doing?”
Bachira continues drying his hair. “Is something wrong, Isagi?”
“You’re naked.” Isagi croaks out. Bachira looks confused, and Isagi remembers that he isn’t from here. “At least cover yourself with a towel!”
Bachira listens, and he emerges from Isagi’s bedroom wearing a pair of his pajama pants. Isagi turns his attention back to the TV. If Bachira sees the blush covering his cheeks, he doesn’t mention it.
“Isagi?” Bachira asks, voice softer than usual. Isagi hums in acknowledgment, turning to face him. “What are you watching?”
Isagi shrugs, patting the space next to him. “Just a corny soap opera Chigiri recommended.”
Bachira smiles, and it’s blinding. “If Chigirin suggested it, it must be good.”
Bachira sits down next to him, moving close enough that their hands are nearly touching. Isagi clears his throat, “what do you want for dinner tonight?”
After thinking for a moment, Bachira’s eyes light up. “Whatever you like, Isagi!”
“How about pizza?” Isagi asks.
“Sounds good to me!” Bachira replies, smiling widely, like he always does. The episode continues, and after a moment, he shifts closer. “Thanks for hanging out with me, Isagi.”
“Bachira.” Isagi’s eyes widen. “I should be saying that to you.” Bachira’s hand brushes against his own, and sparks shoot up his spine.
“Still,” Bachira says, “thank you for everything.”
“It’s the least I can do,” Isagi replies. “Living on earth can’t be easy.”
A soft laugh leaves Bachira’s lips, and he tilts his head like he’s considering something. “It’s hard sometimes, but I like spending time with you,” he says, “and being your friend.”
Isagi smiles at that. “Me too.” In the cool of the afternoon, his heart feels warm.
Bachira is still shirtless, and Isagi catches himself staring while Bachira is deeply engrossed in the show. How the hell is he built like that? Isagi has half a mind to ask Bachira about his workout regimen.
Isagi watches as Bachira laughs with his whole body. Spending time with Bachira is like running outside on a hot summer day, drinking cola and staring straight into the sun.
A particularly surprising plot twist is revealed, and Bachira narrows his eyes, tongue poking out of his mouth as he puts the pieces together. Cute, Isagi thinks.
As Isagi tears his eyes away from Bachira, he comes to the horrifying conclusion that he might be attracted to his alien roommate with the sunny smile and sparkly eyes.
🛸
Bachira is quickly assimilating into human society. Unfortunately for Isagi, that means he’s been covering his coworkers’ shifts whenever they ask him to. Isagi wonders if Bachira is popular at work, or if people find him odd.
Isagi doesn’t fully understand Bachira yet, but he wants to. Isagi plans to ask Bachira about life on another planet, if outer space is as lonely as it seems. Isagi has been lonely himself, waiting for Bachira to come home. After all, he has weekends off for a reason, and he would rather not waste his free time sitting around.
Isagi hears the door open, before someone sets a bag down on the kitchen table. Isagi can’t help but smile. He feels like a loyal dog, and the thought scares him a little.
Bachira appears in the doorway of Isagi’s bedroom, hair ruffled and eyes missing their usual brightness. He perks up when he sees Isagi, and Isagi stifles the urge to press a hand to his heart. “Long day?” He asks.
Bachira pulls off his uniform, and Isagi instinctually covers his eyes as he changes into pajamas. “It wasn’t that bad,” Bachira says. “I’m just happy to be home.”
Home. The word is music to Isagi’s ears. It’s been three weeks since Bachira landed on his balcony, but it feels like they’re been living together for years. It makes Isagi happy to know that Bachira considers the earth home.
It also makes Isagi happy to know Bachira finds home in him, but he keeps the thought to himself.
“I’m tired,” Bachira groans, flopping onto the bed. He lies down next to Isagi, and the other boy feels his heart race and face flush.
“You worked hard,” Isagi says lamely.
Bachira beams. He moves closer, until their legs are nearly intertwined. “You’re cute, Isagi.”
Cute? The word bounces around in Isagi’s head like a tennis ball in an empty room. Isagi swallows thickly, eyes trained on the window as Bachira rests his head on his shoulder.
“Wasn’t it so nice outside today?” Bachira asks, and Isagi nods. After a minute of silence, Bachira speaks again. “We should go to the beach sometime!”
“Sure,” Isagi replies. He pauses—he doesn’t remember being this agreeable. Bachira seems to be the exception.
Bachira launches into a monologue about his day, and Isagi listens intently. Isagi learns that Kunigami is close to becoming manager, and that his role as shift lead affords him extra privileges, like FaceTiming Chigiri while he’s on the clock.
Bachira mentions that Barou, one of his coworkers, is apparently the king of beach soccer, and that he plans on proving him wrong. He gets tired after a while, and one of his hands moves closer to Isagi’s waist.
Isagi stares down at their hands, which are dangerously close together, and the gravity of the situation hits him. They’re practically cuddling, not that he minds.
“Bachira, what about dinner—” Isagi doesn’t have the chance to finish his sentence before Bachira is fast asleep.
Isagi wants to reach out, run a hand through Bachira’s hair. And so he does, gently brushing strands of hair out of his eyes. Bachira just sighs and moves closer, so close that Isagi can hear his heartbeat.
Isagi closes his eyes, leaning into the touch. His heart is nothing but warm as he drifts off to sleep, dreaming of golden eyes, soft yellow hair, and a toothy smile.
🛸
Isagi sighs, leaning back against the couch. It’s been a while since he’s had such a perfect day—the sun is shining, the AC is running, and he’s halfway through a new comic book.
Bachira has been watching and playing soccer, much to the dismay of their downstairs neighbors. He accompanied Isagi on a walk around noon, and for the past hour, the apartment has been oddly quiet.
“Isagi!” Bachira appears next to him, and Isagi looks up from his book. Isagi likes the way Bachira says his name, voice rising and falling in pitch. “What are you doing?”
“Just reading,” Isagi replies, setting the book down on his lap. Bachira sits down next to him and goes quiet for a moment, staring out the window. “Don’t tell me you’re bored,” he says teasingly. When Bachira stays silent, he continues, “we can play video games if you want—”
“Do you have a boyfriend?” Bachira asks. He’s floating slightly off the couch, another quirk Isagi has gotten used to. He usually starts levitating when he’s excited or nervous, but Isagi can’t tell what he’s feeling at the moment.
Isagi chokes, and his face turns bright red. Where the hell is this coming from?
“No.” Isagi croaks out.
Bachira tilts his head, golden eyes piercing Isagi’s heart. “Why not?”
Isagi shrugs. “I’ve never dated anyone before,” Isagi says. “I spend all my free time with you, anyway.”
Grinning, Bachira moves closer. “Have you ever been in love before?”
Isagi shakes his head. He has half a mind to ask Bachira where he got these questions from—probably from speaking with Chigiri. Isagi shudders to think about Bachira hanging out with Chigiri and Reo at the same time. His friends are nothing if not a group of lovesick fools.
“What about you?” Isagi asks.
“Never,” Bachira replies. “You were the first friend I made.”
The words hit Isagi harder than a ball to the face. He has long suspected that Bachira’s previous life was lonely, but he hasn’t gotten around to asking about it.
“Was it lonely?” Isagi asks. “In space, I mean.”
Bachira’s eyes widen, but he nods slowly. “Kinda,” he replies. “I don’t think I ever met someone my age.”
Bachira smiles softly. “I don’t feel that way anymore.” He says. “I have you now, don’t I?”
Isagi just nods. He would be lying if he said Bachira didn’t occupy a hefty portion of his mind. It’s hard to believe that Bachira, with his sunny smile and shining eyes, has never been in love before.
Bachira turns on the TV, and his eyes are immediately fixed on the screen. Isagi catches himself staring at the boy sitting beside him.
Bachira is pretty.
Isagi feels his heart in his throat whenever Bachira smiles and laughs, hand nearly brushing his own. He tries not to notice the way his shirt hangs off Bachira’s shoulder, exposing his collarbone. Meanwhile, Isagi’s book lies on the floor, long-forgotten.
“Isagi,” Bachira begins, “let me know if you fall in love, okay?”
Isagi just nods. “Only if you do.” On autopilot, he reaches out and runs a hand through Bachira’s soft hair. Bachira leans into the touch, practically purring.
Bachira moves closer, until their pinkies are touching. His eyes are narrowed, sunlight illuminating his striking eyes. “I will.”
🛸
“Bachira!”
Bachira’s eyes light up as he steps into the break room and Isagi’s coworkers are waiting for him. He finds a seat next to Chigiri, who immediately begins complaining about the latest staff meeting. Bachira just listens, nodding along with sparkling eyes.
Kunigami walks in a few minutes later, carrying six lattes. He sets the trays down on the table, ruffling Bachira’s hair.
“Thank you!” Isagi says. “You really are the best.”
“It’s nothing,” Kunigami replies. He’s never been good at receiving praise. “Bachira helped me order for everyone.”
Chigiri smiles. “Thank you, Bachira.”
“Of course!” Bachira says. “That’s what friends do, right?” He slides a latte across the table, and Isagi lifts the cup to his lips.
“You remembered my order.” Isagi says.
Bachira tilts his head. “I’d never forget it,” he replies. He catches Isagi’s eye, and it takes all of Isagi’s strength not to burst into flames. “I’ll be back,” Bachira says. “Nagi is gonna show me the new video game display!”
And he’s gone, leaving Isagi alone with Chigiri and Kunigami. Kunigami locks eyes with him. “Why didn’t you tell us you two were dating?”
Isagi turns bright red. “We’re just friends!”
“Sounds oddly defensive to me,” Chigiri says. “He really likes you.”
“I would hope so,” Isagi replies. “We’ve been living together for a month.”
Isagi dodges the question artfully. Surely Kunigami and Chigiri haven’t caught on to his stupid crush—Isagi thinks he’s been doing a good job of hiding it.
Bachira is the sun. He’s a little odd, and while Isagi doesn’t fully understand him yet, Bachira understands him better than anyone. Isagi has never met someone like him before, and he knows he never will, because Bachira is one of a kind.
“You know what I mean, smartass.” Chigiri rolls his eyes. “I’m getting sick of him talking about you all the time.”
“When have you been talking to him?” Isagi asks. Bachira talks about him? He wishes Kunigami would stop his boyfriend from saying something embarrassing, but it seems as if he’s in on the plan.
“We text, and we call sometimes,” Chigiri replies. “So, when are you going to confess?”
“Never,” Isagi says. Maybe one day he’ll tell his friends about the way his heart flutters when Bachira gets especially close, or the way he eagerly waits for Bachira to come home. “Quit worrying about me. Do you guys have any plans for the weekend?”
“We’re all going to the beach on Saturday,” Chigiri says. “You have to come.”
It sounds less like an invitation and more like a threat, but Isagi doesn’t mind. “We’ll be there,” Isagi replies. “Bachira has been talking about playing soccer on the beach.”
Isagi catches Chigiri and Kunigami sharing a knowing glance, but before he can say anything, Bachira returns to the break room, looking mildly disappointed. He sits down next to Isagi, who turns to look at him. “What’s wrong?”
“The video game wasn’t as cool as I thought,” Bachira replies.
Isagi laughs. “I’m sure you’d rather play soccer.”
Bachira’s eyes light up, “you read my mind!”
Kunigami stands up, ruffling Bachira’s hair and giving Isagi a pat on the back. “My break’s over,” he says. “I’ll see you back at work,” he adds, smiling at Bachira before leaving.
“See you later, Bachira!” Chigiri waves before following behind Kunigami, presumably walking him to the main entrance.
Bachira takes a long sip of coffee, and in the silence, Isagi is subject to his own thoughts. He wonders how Bachira would react if he knew about his feelings, the feelings that are blooming in his chest, slowly making it hard to breathe.
Bachira sets his cup down, and Isagi’s breath catches in his throat. His eyes are glowing, strands of golden hair falling into his face. Before Isagi can stop himself, his lips are moving faster than his mind.
“You’re pretty.” Isagi says, even though he immediately wants to kick himself after the words leave his mouth.
Bachira’s eyes widen, and he grins. “You’re pretty too, Isagi!”
Isagi turns bright red, and he tries to change the subject. He’s the one who started it, and yet, he can’t gather enough courage to continue on. Maybe one day.
“Chigiri and Kunigami invited us to the beach this weekend.” Isagi says, and Bachira’s eyes immediately light up.
“Really?” Bachira’s tone is so soft, voice rising in pitch like it always does when he’s happy. “I’m excited!”
Isagi smiles at him, reaching over and running a hand through his hair. This is one of the many reasons he likes Bachira. He could be thinking about a thousand other things, but when he’s with Bachira, his worries vanish.
“Ah—I need to buy a swimsuit.” Bachira says, deep in thought. “Hey, Isagi.” He begins, and Isagi catches his gaze. “What time do you get off?”
“Five,” Isagi replies.
“Sounds good!” Bachira beams, standing up from his chair. “I’ll be back to pick you up.”
Even though Bachira comes home on his own, Isagi knows he’s spent many evenings alone, waiting for him to finish working. This time, Bachira is taking the initiative, and the fact makes Isagi’s heart tighten in his chest.
Isagi walks Bachira to the entrance, the same way Chigiri did, and he comes to the sobering conclusion that he might like Bachira, just a little bit.
🛸
Isagi has always loved the beach. He loves the feeling of walking on hot sand, and the equally satisfying feeling of cool waves lapping at his feet.
He planned on taking Bachira to the beach a lot earlier, but today, the weather is perfect.
“Isagi—pass it over here!” Bachira shouts, eyes sparkling as he takes control of the ball, dribbling it across the sand.
Watching Bachira play soccer makes Isagi feel like a teenager again, staying up until midnight and rewatching his favorite matches. Bachira weaves around the other players while keeping the ball close to him, and when Isagi reaches him again, he passes.
Bachira locks eyes with him, and Isagi almost loses control of the ball. Chigiri sprints across the sand, and it’s a miracle he doesn’t trip. He manages to steal the ball away from him, passing it to Kunigami, who scores a powerful goal.
Chigiri celebrates the goal by pressing a kiss to his cheek, and Kunigami somehow gets even more fired up.
Isagi is lucky that Nagi and Reo haven’t joined the game yet, because they’re nearly unstoppable when they play together. Currently, Reo is applying sunscreen to Nagi’s back with the other boy plays a game on his phone.
The game starts again, and Bachira sprints, controlling the ball like it’s his friend. His eyes narrow, flashing gold in the sunlight. He rushes toward the goal, but Chigiri stops him before he can get too close.
Bachira passes to Isagi once more, and Isagi grins, shooting the ball directly into the goal. Normally, Isagi can tell when Bachira is using his heightened senses, but in the moment, it’s just him. No enhanced vision or hearing, no supernatural speed, just Bachira.
“Nice one, Isagi!” Bachira says. “You’re really good.”
Isagi feels a smile tugging at his lips, and he can’t tell if the warmth flooding his face is because of Bachira, or the summer sun.
“Nagi—let’s play!” Reo exclaims, dragging Nagi away from the towels and over to their makeshift field. Nagi grumbles, but he follows Reo anyway.
Nagi opts to join Isagi’s team, and Reo joins Chigiri’s. Isagi notices that Bachira can pull any team together with his friendly words and passionate nature.
Isagi scores a particularly game-changing goal, and Bachira rushes toward him, jumping on his back. Isagi is too aware of Bachira’s bare skin against his own. “That was amazing, Isagi!”
“I couldn’t have done it without your pass,” Isagi replies.
Bachira’s arms are looped around Isagi’s neck, and it feels natural. “That’s why we make such a good team!”
“Yeah,” Isagi says. “We do.”
Isagi’s team ends up winning because of the chemistry between him and Bachira, enhanced by Nagi’s incredible skills.
“Good game!” Chigiri says, pink hair falling into his face. “You’re really good, Bachira.”
Bachira smiles. “That was fun,” he says. “I love playing soccer with you guys!”
Reo stands next to Nagi, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. “How does it feel to win?” Isagi thinks for a moment, pulling on his shirt.
Isagi wants to say something cool, something about how winning is a casual feeling to him. And yet, when he looks at Bachira, who’s staring at him with stars in his eyes, he just says what comes to mind.
“Good,” he replies. Isagi’s hair is sweaty, and his shorts cling to his skin, but he’s never felt more free.
“You should join our team in the fall!” Reo says. “We could really use someone like you.”
Bachira is still smiling. “That’s our star player, Isagi Yoichi!” He says, eyes bright and earnest. His shirt is finally back on, and Isagi wants to kick himself for even looking in the first place.
Isagi rubs the back of his neck. “It was all of us, really. I mean, Nagi—”
Kunigami gives him a slap on the back. “Don’t be so modest.”
“I’ll beat you next time,” Chigiri says, grinning. Isagi nods. He’ll think about their offer later. Even though he’s seriously considering it, Isagi wants to play soccer with Bachira. Isagi can’t ignore how he’s already treating the two of them like a package deal, an inseparable duo.
Isagi feels fingers wrap around his wrist, and in a second, he’s being pulled away by Bachira. Despite the scorching temperature, Bachira’s skin feels cool against his own.
“Isagi!” As usual, Isagi is enchanted by the way Bachira says his name. “Let’s swim!”
“Hold on!” Reo reaches into his bag and practically throws a tube of sunscreen at them. “It’s been two hours,” he says. “Time to reapply.”
Bachira tilts his head. “Why do we have to do this again?”
Isagi opens the tube. “Trust me, you don’t wanna get skin cancer.” He says. He hands it to Bachira, briefly wondering if aliens can even get sunburnt.
“Want some help, Isagi?” Bachira asks. His doe eyes are wide, slender fingers curled around the tube. Isagi just nods, unable to say anything. He pulls off his shirt and folds it before setting it down.
Isagi lies down on a towel, and Bachira sits next to him. He smooths a hand over Isagi’s back. “You’re really red, Isagi—did you already get sunburnt?”
Isagi flushes even darker. “It’s nothing. The sun’s just really bright today,” he says. Bachira buys his dumb excuse, rubbing the lotion into his skin.
Bachira’s movements are careful in a way Isagi has never noticed before. Bachira is usually wild and vibrant, but his fingers are feather-light against his back, as if he’s afraid of hurting him.
A few minutes later, Bachira stops. “I’m done,” he says. Isagi opens his eyes and sits up. Bachira stares at him curiously before throwing the tube at him.
“My turn!” He says.
Isagi’s breath catches in his throat as Bachira pulls off his shirt and tosses it to the side. He lies down, and Isagi tries to keep his heart rate steady as he pours lotion onto his hand, running it over Bachira’s back.
Bachira sighs, eyes fluttering closed. Isagi understands why Bachira touched him so cautiously, because he handles him like he’s fragile, even though he knows Bachira is the opposite.
Isagi wonders if Bachira suspects anything, if he’s noticed Isagi staring at him. Isagi knows Bachira likes him—he was his first friend on earth—but Isagi wonders if Bachira would back away if he tried to kiss him, or if Bachira would kiss him first.
“I’m done,” Isagi says. He closes the bottle, and Bachira opens his eyes.
Bachira grins, rolling over. His hair is already ruffled, fanned out against the blue towel. “Thanks, Isagi!”
The second Bachira stands up, he dashes into the water, and Isagi follows closely behind. “Wait for me!” He exclaims.
Bachira sticks his tongue out. “Try and catch me!”
The ocean is cold, but Isagi’s heart is warm. He catches up to Bachira, who takes his hand and guides them deeper into the ocean. Bachira dunks his head into the water, staying there for a few minutes before coming up for air. He shakes his head, hair ruffled like a wet cat.
Isagi dips his head into the water before Bachira can catch him staring. Isagi has seen Bachira shirtless before, but for some reason, it’s different this time. Bachira is toned and slim, skin slightly tan from all his time outside. He’s glowing, Isagi thinks.
Bachira moves like a dolphin, free and vibrant. He’s fast, even in an unfamiliar terrain like this.
Isagi comes up for hair, and before he can react, Bachira is spraying him with water. Isagi shields his face, but it’s too late.
“You’re not getting away with that!” Isagi grabs him by the waist and pulls him into the water. Bachira laughs, allowing himself to get tossed in. Isagi feels like a creep for noticing how small Bachira’s waist is, how he can wrap both hands around it.
Bachira resurfaces after a moment, grinning wildly. His skin sparkles in the sun like a vampire, fangs catching on his bottom lip. His hair is soaking wet, bangs sticking to his forehead, but Isagi finds him pretty no matter what.
Isagi smiles, running a hand through his wet hair. For a moment, he swears he can see Bachira staring at him.
“Looking good, Isagi!” Bachira chirps.
Isagi swallows thickly. So he was staring.
Bachira’s slender fingers wrap about his wrist, and Isagi lets himself get pulled away by the odd boy who’s stolen his heart. They play a game of tag, and the look in Bachira’s eyes is something Isagi has never seen before. Bachira is usually soft, but Isagi can tell he wants to win.
Their other friends are deep into a game of beach volleyball, and in the moment, it’s just them. Isagi wants to freeze the moment, stay like this forever.
“Hungry,” is the next word Isagi hears.
This time it’s Isagi’s turn to grab Bachira’s hand and lead him away. “Chigiri brought snacks for us,” Isagi says.
“We’re back!” Bachira says, and everyone waves to him. Isagi feels warmth bloom in his chest. Bachira has been living with him for a month, but it feels like he’s always been here.
Isagi takes a seat next to the cooler, and Bachira fills the spot beside him. Bachira rummages through the box, tongue poking out from between his teeth.
Isagi reaches for a towel, draping it over Bachira’s shoulders. “You’re gonna catch a cold if you don’t dry off properly.”
“Thanks, Isagi!” Bachira says. He starts with his hair, before running the towel over his arms and chest.
Isagi stops for a moment, eyes narrowed on the boy beside him. With the sun shining in his eyes, casting a warm glow on his skin, Bachira has never looked prettier.
“Isagi?” Bachira’s voice brings him out of his trance, and Isagi hopes Bachira didn’t notice him staring like a creep. “Do you want ice cream?”
Isagi just nods, and Bachira hands him a grape popsicle before choosing a cherry-flavored bar for himself.
Within minutes, Bachira’s lips are bright red, and Isagi wants to kiss him so badly it hurts. The realization lifts a weight off his shoulders.
Isagi would be lying if he said he didn’t suspect that Bachira feels the same. Isagi has noticed the way Bachira smiles when they’re together, the way he stares at Isagi, eyes lingering on his lips.
Bachira links their pinkies together, and Isagi nearly chokes. Bachira stares at him, eyebrows furrowed. “Is something wrong, Isagi?”
Isagi shakes his head quickly. “Everything’s perfect, Bachira.”
Bachira is satisfied with his answer, and his eyes land on Kunigami, who scores a point with a powerful spike. Bachira’s piercing eyes are dangerous—they see right through him, and Isagi is moments away from laying his soul bare.
The game ends with a win for Chigiri’s team. Nagi practically collapses when the final set is over, but Reo picks him up with ease.
Chigiri sits down next to them, and Isagi feels his eyes flicker to where their hands are connected, but he says nothing.
“Your hair is really pretty like that, Chigirin!” Bachira says.
Chigiri smiles. He rarely ties up his hair, instead choosing to let it fall past his shoulders. “You think so?” Bachira nods, and Chigiri reaches over to ruffle his hair. “This is why you’re my favorite.”
Isagi laughs. “I don’t think Kunigami’s gonna like that one.”
“He’ll be alright,” Chigiri says, grinning. Kunigami looks over at them, and Chigiri just smiles sweetly.
Kunigami waves them over for another game of volleyball, and Bachira springs to his feet, running over to the net with Isagi and Chigiri close behind.
Later, they light sparklers and drink soda on the beach, laughing and talking about nothing and everything. Isagi revels in the feeling of waves dancing at his feet and the sea breeze blowing through his hair.
Around nine, the sun begins to set, daylight fading as stars appear in the sky. Bachira stares up at the moon, eyes wide. Isagi briefly wonders if Bachira still feels lonely, if he feels isolated on a planet full of humans. Does he miss home?
“Having fun?” Reo asks, and Isagi nods. Nagi clings to Reo’s back like a koala, head resting on his shoulder, and Isagi decides that now is a good time to head home. Nagi’s social battery has been low for a while, and Isagi can tell Bachira is getting tired, too.
“Always,” he replies. He looks over at Bachira, who rubs his eyes. “Ready to go?”
Bachira nods, and a smile tugs at the corners of Isagi’s mouth. Isagi has never felt happier than how he feels right now, surrounded by his best friends, barefoot on the sand with Bachira by his side.
🛸
“I’ll see you on Monday!” Isagi says. He waves goodbye to Kunigami and Chigiri, who smile at him before driving off.
Reo appears next, with Nagi clinging to his back. He waves with his free hand, gently setting Nagi in the passenger’s seat. Nagi just stares at him, eyes tired but filled with love. “See you later!” He says, and Isagi nods.
Seeing how much Nagi and Reo care for each other makes Isagi’s heart tighten in his chest. Is he jealous? Isagi briefly entertains the thought. They would do anything for each other with smiles on their faces, and Isagi relates to the feeling. After all, that could be him and Bachira once he gets his act together.
“Tired?” Isagi asks, even though he already knows the answer. Bachira nods, leaning on Isagi for support.
The ride back is quiet, save for the quiet songs on the radio and the occasional motorcycle whizzing by.
“I had fun today.” Bachira says. His hand is dangerously close to Isagi’s thigh, even though he doesn’t realize it.
Isagi smiles. “I’m glad,” he replies. “I had fun, too.”
Bachira goes quiet for a moment, staring at the rising moon above them. “I like spending time with you, Isagi.”
“Me too.” Isagi says. He hasn’t felt this happy in a while, and he never wants it to end.
Summer has only just begun, and yet, Isagi can’t help but worry about the upcoming school year. Would Bachira want to attend college with him? Isagi thinks about all the time they’d spend together—playing soccer, pulling all-nighters. His heart twists at the idea.
Isagi turns on cruise control, finally letting go of the steering wheel. Bachira’s hand brushes against his own, and Isagi’s heart threatens to leap out of his chest.
I like you, Isagi wants to say, but he stops himself, out of fear that he’ll ruin everything.
By the time they arrive home, Bachira is half-asleep. Isagi leads him to their apartment, and Bachira disappears for ten minutes before floating into Isagi’s room.
Isagi’s breath catches in his throat—he may never get used to the sight of Bachira dressed in his clothes.
“It’s cold,” Bachira says quietly. The AC has been off for a while, but Isagi notices that Bachira’s hair is still wet.
“Figures,” Isagi replies. “You didn’t dry off properly.” Bachira smiles, rifling through Isagi’s drawer for a towel.
Once his hair is dry, Bachira practically jumps into bed. Isagi prepares to leave, but Bachira stares at him with piercing eyes, and he’s frozen in place. “Lie down with me?” Isagi just nods—he would be a fool to turn him down.
Isagi sighs, crawling under the covers. He feels like a kid at a sleepover, staying up past midnight with his best friend.
“Come here,” Isagi murmurs, pulling Bachira into his arms. Bachira leans into the touch, purring softly.
The world is quiet for a moment, save for the apartment settling and the occasional car passing by. Isagi could get used to this—falling asleep with Bachira in his arms.
“Isagi?” Isagi peers down at him, fighting the urge to kiss the top of his head. Isagi hums in acknowledgement, and he notices Bachira worrying at his bottom lip. “Do you think I’m weird?”
Isagi frowns. “Where’s this coming from?” Isagi briefly considers accompanying Bachira to work and glaring at anyone who makes him feel like he’s not good enough, but he shakes the thought away.
Bachira sighs. He looks so small in Isagi’s arms. “Sometimes I see people staring, whispering—like there’s something wrong with me.”
“Bachira,” Isagi whispers. “You shouldn’t worry about things like that,” he says. “Some people are cruel for no reason.”
“Not you, though.” Bachira says.
Isagi smiles. “There are a lot of people who like you for who you are,” he says. “I know I do.”
Bachira stays quiet, but Isagi continues. “You’re perfect the way you are,” Isagi says. I love everything about you, Isagi wants to add, but he stays behind the imaginary boundary he created. Maybe someday he’ll find a way to tell Bachira that he feels free with him, like he can do anything. Maybe Bachira already knows.
“Thank you,” Bachira murmurs. His eyes are finally glowing again, and Isagi smiles. Bachira’s touch is feather-light against his skin, but Isagi can feel him smiling. “Goodnight, Isagi.” Bachira whispers.
Isagi’s thumb gently grazes Bachira’s cheek. “Goodnight, Bachira.” He murmurs, staring fondly at the boy in front of him.
Their legs are tangled together, and Isagi is lucky Bachira sleeps like the dead, otherwise he’d hear him thinking. Isagi presses a gentle kiss to Bachira’s forehead, lips feather-light against his skin.
Isagi pulls him a little closer, until Bachira’s head is tucked under his chin. The moon smiles down at them, a reminder that fate brought Bachira into his life.
In the moment, Isagi realizes that his feelings for Bachira go beyond a silly crush. Bachira shines like the sun and burns twice as bright. Bachira tries to cook when Isagi has a long shift, texts Isagi when he’s running a bit late, and tells Isagi to take it easy when he thinks too hard about the future.
Bachira holds Isagi’s heart in his hands, and he does so with a smile on his pretty face. Isagi blinks, finding it hard to stay awake. He likes Bachira so much, and while the thought may have scared him a month ago, he can’t think of anything more comforting.
Isagi yearns for Bachira, wants him in a way he’s never wanted anyone before. He falls asleep holding Bachira close, dreaming about the day he summons the courage to tell him the truth.
🛸
Isagi is dead on his feet by the time he comes home. He hadn’t intended to work a double shift, but Nagi went home sick and Reo rushed after him with a worried expression on his face. Of course, Isagi was more than happy to help.
Bachira is nowhere to be found. He’s not in the bedroom or the kitchen, but Isagi eventually finds him on the balcony, where they first met.
Isagi opens the door. “Stargazing?” He asks. Bachira’s humming a song, but Isagi doesn’t recognize it.
Bachira nods. From here, it looks as if there’s a halo around his head. Isagi stands next to him, leaning against the railing.
The stars are beautiful tonight, specks of white paint against a marbled sky. The vast world above them reminds Isagi that they’re never alone on earth.
“Do you ever miss home?” Isagi asks.
Bachira shrugs. “This is home,” he says, turning to face Isagi. “I miss my mom, but I like it here—with you.”
Isagi swallows thickly. “I hope you can see her again one day,” he says.
“Always so thoughtful, Isagi.” Bachira grins. “She’d just be happy I made a friend.”
Like the ever-expanding galaxy, Isagi feels his heart grow ten sizes. He reaches out, placing his hand over Bachira’s. The other boy gasps softly, but he doesn’t pull away.
Isagi burns for him.
Bachira rests his head on Isagi’s shoulder, and Isagi reaches up to run a hand through his hair. The other boy purrs softly, leaning into the touch.
Isagi is the luckiest guy in the world. Bachira is sweet and kind and pretty. He’s fun and caring, and he makes Isagi want to be the best version of himself. He’s everything, and he’s chosen to be by Isagi’s side.
The stars twinkle, and Bachira’s eyes widen as the moon ascends above the clouds. Isagi tucks a strand of hair behind Bachira’s ear. “Are you okay?”
Bachira giggles, soft and affectionate. Bachira stares at him, tilting his head. His gaze is piercing. “I like you, Isagi.”
Isagi freezes. He’s dreamt about this moment more times than he can count. Bachira, the prettiest boy in the universe, likes him.
Isagi moves closer. “I like you too, Bachira.” He whispers. “A lot.”
“Really?” For the first time since he entered Isagi’s life, Bachira sounds unsure. He stares at the ground, as if the sky is uncertain, ever-changing, while the floor beneath them has a clear end.
Isagi adores him.
He nods. “I’ve liked you for a while now,” he says.
Bachira’s breath is hot against his lips. “Oh?” There’s a familiar, mischievous glint in his eyes. He wraps his arms around Isagi’s waist, pulling him impossibly closer.
Isagi’s breath hitches as Bachira’s tongue wets his lips. His eyes are practically glowing in the moonlight. “Are you gonna kiss me?”
Isagi swallows thickly. He’s never been more nervous or excited in his life. What if he screws up? What if Bachira realizes he doesn’t like him after all? What if—
Bachira surges forward, pressing their lips together. Isagi’s eyes flutter closed, arms finding purchase on Bachira’s shoulders.
There’s something supernatural about the way Bachira kisses him. Isagi feels like he’s floating, like his feet are off the ground. Bachira’s fingers slide into Isagi’s hair, lips warm against his own.
Isagi has imagined kissing Bachira more than he’d like to admit, but nothing compares to the feeling of Bachira’s hands in his hair, tongue running over the seam of Isagi’s lips. Bachira is in his arms, and Isagi never wants this moment to end.
They finally part for air, and Isagi opens his eyes. Bachira is even prettier than usual, hair ruffled and face flushed. He’s floating off the ground, and Isagi’s touch keeps him steady.
“I can’t believe you kissed me first.” Isagi grumbles. It’s not a competition—Isagi is just embarrassed that he stared like an idiot instead of taking action.
“You were taking too long!” Bachira says, laughing. “Chigirin told me to ‘just go for it!’”
Isagi’s face is redder than Mars. He doesn’t know whether to yell at Chigiri or treat him to lunch.
Bachira grins. “You can kiss me anytime, Isagi.”
Isagi finally listens. He cups Bachira’s cheek, pressing their lips together. Bachira throws his arms around Isagi’s shoulders, and before he can react, Bachira’s tongue is in his mouth.
Isagi has never kissed anyone before, and he has no idea how to. They’re both inexperienced and a little clumsy, but he’s more than willing to learn.
A minute later, they pull apart, and Bachira smiles against his lips. He’s breathing heavily, and Isagi’s mind is clouded, thoughts filled with nothing but Bachira.
“Where’d you learn how to do that?” Isagi asks, trying not to sound insecure.
“I looked it up!” Bachira replies, almost proud. His arms are still tight around Isagi’s shoulders, fingers tangled in his hair.
“And you really asked Chigiri for advice?” Isagi asks, breathless.
Bachira laughs. “I had to!” He says.“Kunigami wasn’t helpful,” he adds, frowning. “All he did was talk about Chigiri.”
Sounds about right, Isagi thinks.
Bachira runs his thumb along Isagi’s cheek. “How long have you liked me?”
“Since the day you asked me if I had a boyfriend,” Isagi replies. “What about you?”
“Remember the time I came home late, and you stayed in bed with me?” Bachira asks, and Isagi nods, blushing slightly at the memory. “That was when I knew.”
“That long?” Isagi asks. He feels dumb for ever doubting the way Bachira felt about him.
Bachira shrugs. “I know we promised to tell each other if we fell in love.” He says, and Isagi thinks back to their conversation on the couch. “I just didn’t know you were gonna keep me.”
Isagi presses a kiss to his forehead. “That was always the plan.” His face hurts from smiling, but it’s the best pain he’s ever felt. At the moment, he almost forgets about the question he’s been meaning to ask for days. “Be my boyfriend?”
Bachira leans forward, pressing another kiss to Isagi’s lips. “I thought you’d never ask.”
The sky is completely dark now, lit only by the moon and a flurry of stars. Bachira yawns and laces their fingers together, eyes sparkling. “Let’s go to bed, boyfriend.”
That night, Isagi falls asleep under the sparkling sky, wrapped in the arms of the boy that makes him feel whole. He dreams of Bachira’s pretty smile, vibrant eyes, and gentle fingers wrapped around his wrist.
🛸
Parting from Bachira the next morning is treacherous. Bachira clings to him like a koala, arms wrapped tightly around Isagi’s waist. Isagi gently slides out from his grip and nearly lands on the floor. He tip-toes around the apartment, careful not to wake his boyfriend.
Bachira is still fast asleep when Isagi is about to leave. Isagi smiles softly, leaning over and pressing a kiss to his forehead. “I’ll see you later,” he whispers.
Bachira’s eyes flutter open, and Isagi’s heart tightens in his chest. “See you later, Isagi!” Bachira pulls him in for a kiss, lips soft against his own. When they part, Isagi is grinning like an idiot.
Isagi leaves the apartment in a lovesick daze, but there are worse ways to start the day.
Hot weather and the busyness of summer bring out a new, terrifying side of his boss. Ego has a hefty list of tasks for Isagi to complete the moment he clocks in, and times like this make Isagi want to quit. He’d much rather be at home, sleeping until noon with Bachira beside him.
Isagi sighs as he unloads a new shipment of produce. He has already set up clothing displays, approved returns and fixed the self-checkout machines—and he’s still not done. His break can’t come soon enough.
Isagi doesn’t hear from Bachira until noon. To be fair, he resisted the urge to touch his phone, not willing to risk getting fired. He heads to the break room, only to see Chigiri and Reo engaged in an intense game of Uno. His phone buzzes in his pocket, and his face lights up when he sees a familiar name.

Isagi sends Bachira a selfie from the break room. He’s not an expert at taking pictures of himself, but he’s vaguely aware of what angles look good. He runs a hand through his hair, tilting his phone to the side before taking a picture.

Isagi’s breath catches in his throat. They’ve been living together for two months now, but now that they’re dating, even seeing Bachira’s face sets Isagi’s heart on fire.
Bachira is so pretty. He’s smiling, golden eyes curved upwards as he makes a peace sign. His skin is glowing, shiny fangs on display. Isagi spots Kunigami in the background, and he figures Bachira is on break, too.
There’s something sugary sweet about the way Bachira uses his break time to talk to him. His messages serve as a reminder that even though they’re not together, they’re never truly apart.
Isagi stares at the photo for a solid minute before he snaps out of his daze. Screw Ego’s ten-point plan—Isagi’s new goal is making sure Bachira knows he’s pretty.

Isagi smiles as he slips his phone back into his pocket. Nagi sets down his phone and begrudgingly joins the game of Uno, and Chigiri deals them in. Isagi makes it through the rest of the day by counting the minutes remaining until he can go home.
🛸
Isagi sighs, staring at his phone. They’ve been dating for three days, and Isagi wants to do this right. Bachira is his first everything—kiss, boyfriend, love, and Isagi would hate to screw it up by doing something stupid, or not doing anything at all. Isagi rubs the back of his neck. How is he supposed to ask his boyfriend out on a date?
Isagi imagines taking Bachira to a nice restaurant, then holding his hand as they walk under the stars. Should he buy Bachira flowers? When was the last time he wore a suit?
Before Isagi can think any harder, he arrives home. Bachira is waiting for him when he opens the door, immediately floating to Isagi’s side like a cat. He definitely sensed Isagi taking the elevator.
Bachira presses a kiss to Isagi’s cheek. “Isagi!” He grins, “how was your day?”
“A little stressful.” Isagi sets his bag down, pulling Bachira closer. “I’m just happy to be home.”
Bachira smiles, fangs on full display. “We won’t be here for long,” he says. Isagi freezes, and Bachira laughs. “I’m taking you out!”
Isagi stares for a moment. Can Bachira read minds? Bachira intertwines their fingers. “That’s what couples do, right?” Isagi just nods.
Bachira opens the door, “let’s go!”
“Wait!” Isagi looks down at his outfit, thankful that he had changed after his shift. “Shouldn’t I wear something nicer?”
Bachira shakes his head, leading Isagi down the hallway. “You’re perfect this way.”
Isagi’s heart tightens in his chest, and he gives Bachira’s hand a gentle squeeze. Bachira’s hand is warm against his own, and Isagi quietly wonders if their heartbeats are in sync, too.
🛸
Their first stop is a quaint restaurant in the city. Bachira has gotten good at using chopsticks, Isagi notes, as he twirls one with his fingers.
The atmosphere is comfortable, and Isagi prefers this to something stuffy. Bachira links their legs together under the table, and the action has Isagi tripping over his words.
Bachira asks Isagi a hundred questions about his day, and Isagi answers every one. Truthfully, Isagi can’t remember much else past their break-time text conversation.
“When did you learn to take selfies?” Isagi asks, stacking their empty bowls.
“Chigirin taught me!” Bachira says proudly. “He said you would like them.”
As usual, Chigiri is at the crime scene, but this time, Isagi plans on thanking him. “I did,” he replies. “A lot.”
Bachira grins, tilting his head. “You really like me that much?” He asks, with a teasing lilt to his voice.
Isagi wants to kiss him so badly it hurts. “Of course.” He pauses. “What about mine?”
Bachira pulls his phone out of his pocket, and Isagi sees his face on the lock-screen. He turns bright red. “You didn’t have to do that!”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Bachira asks. “I wanna see your face all the time!”
Isagi’s heart is on fire, and the flush on his face stays even after they leave the restaurant.
After a short train ride, Bachira takes Isagi to a movie. It’s about aliens, and Isagi can’t help but feel underwhelmed. After all, Bachira is sitting beside him.
Isagi finds himself staring, watching the way Bachira’s eyes widen as the aliens finally leave earth, leave the planet they never called home. Isagi knows Bachira was lonely once, but seeing him laugh with his friends, the care he puts into his job, and the way he smiles when he greets Isagi remind him that he’ll never be alone again.
Isagi wants to hold him, press kisses to his knuckles and tell him that everything will be okay. Even after months, the urge to protect him is strong.
Halfway through the movie, Isagi reaches over and laces their fingers together. Bachira smiles, resting his head on Isagi’s shoulder.
Loving Bachira is like breathing—he’s the sun, and Isagi is happy to orbit around him.
They end up taking a moonlit walk, like the one Isagi imagined. Isagi could listen to Bachira talk for hours, enchanted by the way his eyes light up when he thinks of a good story, or the way he moves animatedly when he explains something.
Bachira’s halfway through a breakdown of the movie’s inaccuracies when he stops. “You’ve been a little quiet, Isagi.” Bachira says.
Isagi moves closer, thumb brushing over Bachira’s knuckles. “I like listening to you,” he replies.
This time, it’s Bachira’s turn to blush. He goes quiet for a moment, and Isagi wonders if he would ruin the moment by saying ‘I love you.’
“Did you have fun?” Bachira asks, and he sounds a little unsure. “Kunigami helped me set everything up.”
“I had a lot of fun!” Isagi replies. “But you know I’d do anything,” he says, “as long as we’re together.”
Bachira’s blush deepens. He regains his composure, and a grin spreads across his lips. “You’d become an astronaut for me?”
Isagi shrugs. “How hard could it be?”
Isagi is more-than willing to go to space for Bachira, because he’d do anything to see him smile.
Bachira yawns quietly, blinking slowly. Isagi smiles fondly, “getting tired?”
Bachira frowns. “I used to be nocturnal!” He sighs, “I’ve lost all my instincts.”
Isagi wraps an arm around Bachira’s waist, pressing a kiss to his temple. “But you’ve gained some new ones, right?”
The moon pales in comparison to Bachira’s bright smile and glowing eyes. “You’re awfully romantic, Isagi Yoichi!”
“Only for you, though.” Isagi says. The train station gets closer with each step, but Isagi never wants this moment to end.
Bachira pulls him closer, lips dangerously close to his own. “Hurry up and kiss me already,” he whispers, and Isagi is nothing if not a good listener.
🛸
“I think someone owes me a ‘thank you,’” Chigiri says. Isagi steps out of the way as a radish nearly falls on his head. It’s a slow morning, and organizing the produce section is oddly comforting on a foggy day like this.
Isagi turns around, only to see a barcode scanner dangerously close to his face. “For what?”
“Don’t play dumb.” Chigiri says, “I saw you looking at those pictures Bachira sent you.”
Isagi frowns. “Am I not allowed to look at pictures of my boyfriend?”
Chigiri playfully flicks Isagi’s forehead. “You wouldn’t have those pictures if it weren’t for me!”
Isagi sighs. Truthfully, he owes Chigiri thanks for much more than that. “Fine—thank you, Chigiri.” He stops, attempting to come up with a clever segue. “By the way, has Bachira been talking about me?”
“Talking about you?” Chigiri says, “he won’t shut up.” He tries to sound annoyed, but the smile on his face speaks for itself. “It’s pretty cute, though.”
A smile spreads across Isagi’s lips. “What did he say?”
Chigiri places a red apple on top of a fruit pyramid. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
Isagi is dangerously close to tossing one at him, “I would.”
“It’s just the usual,” Chigiri says. “Your eyes are like the ocean, he feels the happiest when he’s with you, and he loves you.”
Isagi has no idea how Chigiri is so nonchalant. He lets go of the basil he was holding, but he catches it before it hits the floor. “He loves me?”
“Surely this can’t be the first time you’ve heard that,” Chigiri says. “He was freaking out the other day—asked Rensuke to help him plan a date before he called me and asked if his hair looked good.”
Isagi knows very well that Bachira would burn down a building for him, but the extra confirmation makes his heart swell.
Isagi swallows thickly. “I love him,” he says. It’s obvious, but voicing the words is unfairly difficult. “I haven’t told him yet, though.”
“Tell him,” Chigiri says. “Nothing would make him happier.” Chigiri’s facial expression is soft, as he wears the smile reserved only for the people he holds dear.
Isagi smiles. “Thank you, Chigiri.” He finally finishes stacking green onions, wiping his sweaty forehead with his shirt. The AC mysteriously stopped working, and Isagi is sure that Ego was behind it. “Do you wanna get drinks this weekend?”
Chigiri grins, “only if there’s karaoke.”
“Of course,” Isagi replies. “Drinks are on me.”
Chigiri wraps an arm around his shoulders. “Are you trying to bribe me for more info?” He asks teasingly.
“I was gonna buy you dinner anyway!” Isagi rolls his eyes. “You know you’re my favorite coworker,” he says, reaching over and handing Chigiri a roll of stickers.
“Coworker?” Chigiri says, feigning hurt. “I thought we were more than that!”
“We are,” Isagi replies. “But you make working at this place worth it.”
Chigiri freezes, and Isagi swears he can see his bottom lip quiver. “You can’t just say things like that!” He says, turning away.
“Why not?” Isagi asks. “I look forward to seeing you.”
Like clockwork, Ego catches them having fun, and Chigiri is assigned to the self-checkout machines. His hair flows behind him as he walks away, unsuccessfully hiding his smile. “This isn’t over, Isagi!”
Isagi chuckles softly, thinking briefly about how lucky he is to have good friends and the best boyfriend he could ask for. He remembers the day he first met Chigiri; the other boy was sitting in the back of the break room with his headphones on, clearly avoiding their other coworkers. Isagi sat down next to him and asked why Ego was such an asshole that day, and the rest was history.
Isagi wonders if he can get Bachira, Chigiri, Kunigami, Reo and Nagi to agree to an end-of-summer road trip. He sighs—convincing Nagi will be the hardest part, but he’s willing to try.
His phone buzzes in his pocket, reminding him that his first shift is over. Isagi rushes to the break room, eager to call Bachira and hear his voice. He’s head-over-heels in love, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
🛸
“Isagi!” Bachira practically jumps into his boyfriend’s arms as he walks through the front door. He presses a kiss to his cheek, then this forehead. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too.” Isagi holds Bachira up with one arm, closing the door behind him. “Sorry I’m late,” he says. “Our new assistant manager made us work overtime—he’s really shitty.”
“Language, Isagi!” Bachira says playfully, gently pinching Isagi’s cheek.
Isagi gently sets Bachira down, slipping off his shoes. He notices a few pots in the sink, but there’s no smoke in sight, and the apartment is still in one piece. “Were you cooking?”
Bachira nods. “I made dinner for us!”
Isagi blinks once, then twice. “You did?” Since they started living together, Bachira has dedicated himself to chores unrelated to the kitchen. After a few close calls, or rather, brushes with death, Bachira stopped trying to cook—or so Isagi thought.
Bachira nods. “You worked hard today.”
The softness in Bachira’s eyes makes Isagi melt on the soft. “It smells really good,” he says, thumb brushing over Bachira’s knuckles.
Bachira grins. He grabs Isagi’s wrist, pulling him into the kitchen. “You better not be lying!”
“I would never!” Isagi replies, following behind him like the lovestruck fool he is.
Isagi has half a mind to ask Bachira if there’s anything he can’t do. Dinner is the best meal he’s eaten in a while, and Bachira’s leg entwined with his own makes it even better.
“Anyway,” Isagi says, “there’s this new guy, and his hair is even longer than Chigiri’s.”
Bachira laughs. “Is that even possible?”
“Apparently,” Isagi replies. “And he was convinced his displays were the best—he said they were the most glam.”
“Well,” Bachira tilts his head, “were they?” His eyes are golden as always, but Isagi no longer feels the heaviness of his gaze.
Isagi shrugs. “I’m probably biased, but I thought Chigiri’s were better.”
“I’ll have to see them,” Bachira says. Isagi just nods. Bachira’s words are often promises he keeps without realizing, and Isagi has never met someone as honest as him, so free and willing to speak his mind.
After dinner, Isagi offers to wash the dishes, but Bachira beats him to it. They quickly settle into a rhythm, Isagi scrubbing the dishes while Bachira rinses and sets them in the dishwasher.
If they get sidetracked after Bachira starts a bubble-fight, that’s beside the point.
Later, Isagi picks a movie for them to watch. It’s just a silly romantic comedy, but Isagi knows the genre is Bachira’s favorite to make fun of.
“Isagi!” Bachira says, “it’s starting!”
Isagi dries his hands, stepping into the living room. Bachira is sitting on the couch, and when Isagi gets close, Bachira wraps his fingers around his wrist, pulling him into his lap.
Isagi gasps softly. He often forgets how strong Bachira is, how easily Bachira could manhandle him if he wanted to. Their faces are dangerously close together, inches apart, and Isagi feels his heart race. “Is this okay?” Bachira asks.
Isagi nods, face so red it could be seen from outer space. “Isn’t this uncomfortable for you?”
Bachira shakes his head. “Not at all!” He leans closer, lips ghosting Isagi’s own. The movie has already been forgotten, the remote tossed to the side. He tilts his head. “Feeling embarrassed, Isagi?”
“I’m not embarrassed!” Isagi’s blush deepens. He rests his hands on Bachira’s hips, watching as Bachira’s breath hitches, tongue wetting his lips. “What are you waiting for?” Isagi asks.
Bachira surges forward, presses their lips together, and it’s electric. His hands rest on Isagi’s waist, fingers brushing against his skin. Isagi wraps his arms around Bachira’s shoulders, pulling him impossibly closer.
Isagi threads his fingers through Bachira’s soft hair, relishing in the way Bachira sighs into his mouth. Bachira’s lips are soft against his own, and his touch is otherworldly. Bachira tastes sweet, like the pineapple soda he likes so much.
Parting for air is almost painful. Bachira presses their foreheads together, thumb resting on Isagi’s cheek. Bachira is pretty, face flushed and lips red like wild cherries. He stares at Isagi with stars in his eyes. “I’ve been wanting to do that all day.”
Isagi smiles. “Me too,” he murmurs.
Bachira giggles, voice high and soft. “You’re a good kisser,” he says.
“Only ‘cause of you,” Isagi replies. He runs his thumb along Bachira’s jaw. “Kiss me again.” He says, and Bachira doesn’t need to be told twice.
Isagi drowns in the feeling of Bachira holding him close. Bachira slips his tongue into Isagi’s mouth, thumb rubbing his hipbone. Isagi often worries that he’s too clumsy, using too much teeth and tongue, but Bachira kisses his thoughts away.
“I love you,” Isagi says as they pull apart. For a moment, it feels as if the world stops tilting on its axis. They were made for each other, Isagi thinks—a child of the stars and his earthly soulmate.
Bachira pauses. His eyes glimmer, lips curled into a sweet smile. “I love you too.” He pulls Isagi in for another kiss, fangs catching on his bottom lip, stealing the air from his lungs and breathing him back to life.
This time, Bachira’s eyes are glowing when they part. He’s the moon and the sun and the stars, he’s the solar system and everything in between. Isagi would do anything for him.
“So pretty,” Isagi whispers. Bachira turns bright red, hiding his face in Isagi’s neck. Isagi has never seen him so flustered.
Isagi stares at him, hair ruffled. He takes a moment to catch his breath before speaking. “Do you wanna get ice cream?”
They’re both grinning, laughing softly and blushing like idiots. Isagi is infinitely lucky to be young and in love like this, sitting in the lap of the prettiest boy in the universe.
Bachira smiles against his lips, presses a kiss to his cheek, then the corner of his mouth. “You read my mind.”
🛸
Nights like this bring Isagi peace. Wind blows through his hair and goosebumps rise on his skin, and Isagi leans against the railing, watching the world go by.
Isagi stares at the stars above him. He’s given up on counting each one—the never-ending sky above him is just another reminder that he’s a microscopic speck in the universe.
“Stargazing?” Like the sun shining through a sea of clouds, Bachira appears next to him, smiling softly.
Isagi nods, and he moves closer. “How was your day?”
Bachira pulls him in for a hug, wrapping his arms around Isagi’s shoulders. “It was alright,” he replies. “I’m a little tired, though.”
Isagi runs a hand through Bachira’s hair. “You did well today,” he says. It’s a few words, but they never fail to make Bachira smile.
When Bachira pulls away to stare at the sky, his eyes lack homesickness. Isagi has never felt bored with Bachira. Even when Isagi is completely out of energy, the other boy always finds something to talk about. At the moment, however, Bachira is quiet.
“Do you wanna go out with everyone this weekend?” Isagi asks. He knows the answer, but it never hurts to ask.
Bachira’s eyes light up. “Of course!”
“Chigiri wanted to do karaoke,” Isagi says. “I think he has something amazing planned.”
Bachira hums softly. He continues staring into space, and after a moment, he turns to face Isagi. “Do you think they know about my secret?” Bachira asks, silently wondering if it would be okay to tell them.
Isagi freezes, and his gaze softens. “They might have suspected something before,” he says. “I don’t think they know yet.”
“Should I tell them?” Bachira asks.
Isagi tucks a strand of hair behind Bachira’s ear. “Only if you feel comfortable.”
Bachira turns his head to face him, and Isagi gets caught in his gaze. His eyes glow, sharp and golden under the moonlight. “Your eyes are really pretty,” Bachira says.
Isagi smiles. “You say that a lot,” he says.
Bachira shrugs. “Reo told me that eyes are the window to the soul,” he says. “I like looking at yours.”
Isagi stares at Bachira, at his supernova of a boyfriend, and he wonders how he got so lucky. It’s hard to believe that it’s been three months since Bachira first landed on his balcony—life works in mysterious ways.
“They’re like the ocean,” Bachira adds. Isagi thinks back to their beach outing, thinks back to the way the sun shone on his tan skin and sea breeze blew through his hair.
Isagi’s face hurts from grinning so hard. “I love you,” he says, without a second thought.
Bachira’s hand is warm against his own. “Love you too,” Bachira says quietly. “I love you, Isagi.”
Isagi swallows thickly, briefly wondering if marriage is on the table. “I’m really glad you landed here,” he says. He doesn’t dwell on what-ifs, because a world without Bachira is inconceivable.
Bachira’s bottom lip quivers, and a dam bursts. A tear slides down his face, and Isagi’s eyes widen. He pulls Bachira close, pressing a kiss to his forehead. They fit together like two puzzle pieces, the sun and its powerful pull.
Bachira looks at him, tears settling on his eyelashes like dewdrops. He’s ethereal, bangs swept across his face and cheeks dusted pink.
“Are you okay?” Isagi gently wipes away Bachira’s tears with his thumb. Bachira leans into the touch like a cat.
Bachira nods. “Just happy.” His hands find purchase on Isagi’s waist. “I’m gonna tell them,” he says after a moment.
Isagi’s gaze is fond. “I promise they’ll be happy to hear it,” he says. He’s not certain about many things, but this is a promise he can keep.
“Ah, I probably look stupid right now,” Bachira says, rubbing his eyes.
Isagi frowns. “Don’t say things like that.” He cups Bachira’s cheeks, pressing kisses to his face like he’s sewing stars into the sky. Bachira laughs, arms wrapped tightly around Isagi’s waist.
“Isagi!” Bachira gasps, “that tickles!” He concedes after a minute, when his tears are fully dry and he’s smiling widely.
Isagi stares at Bachira for a moment, in awe of the boy in front of him. He presses their lips together, relishing in the way stars burst behind his eyelids.
There’s nothing supernatural about the way Bachira loves him. Isagi is everything—the stars, the moon and everything in between. Isagi’s lips on his remind Bachira that he’ll never be lonely again, and Isagi’s hands in his hair have Bachira hearing wedding bells.
The truth is out there. Isagi has heard the phrase throughout his life, and for once, he agrees. The truth in question flew into his life and landed on his balcony. Isagi can’t think of a universe where Bachira doesn’t sleep beside him, clinging to him like a koala, can’t think of a world where he doesn’t greet Bachira with a kiss when he comes home.
Isagi would gladly follow him into space—as close as he could get, anyway. Isagi would do anything for Bachira, and that fact makes him feel free.
Isagi smiles as Bachira rests his head on his shoulder, and when he holds Bachira’s hand, he feels remnants of a star under his fingertips. He may never visit outer space, but he has a piece of the cosmos beside him, and that’s all he needs.
