“Sad,” Jaehaerys sneered. “You don’t get to tell me you feel sad. My wife is still mourning a ghost seven years on.”
“Yes,” Alysanne replied, matching his scorn as she pushed past him. She poured herself a cup of wine and took a long drink. “Actually I do. I loved him and I miss him. He’s dead and I love him more than I ever loved you.”
“Yes, you’re ever so quick to remind me of that and flaunt your wanton indiscretion in my face.”
“You make it sound as if it is an ongoing affair. I am loyal to you, once again. Shackled, if you will, for the rest of my life. And I gave you a choice, Jaehaerys. Long ago.”
At forty-two Alysanne believes herself to be better suited to be a grandmother than a mother, but the gods- according to Jaehaerys- may have other plans. The Quarrels of the Conciliator and the Good Queen did not crumble overnight, rather their marriage had been decaying for longer than anyone might have known.
