Chapter 1: How We Met
Chapter Text
Spring 26, year 1.
It was a nice spring day in the Valley. It was hot out, but not so hot that it was uncomfortable, and there was a consistent breeze that gently made its way through the Valley. The spring was definitely the best time for Oliver to pack up his life in the city and start anew as Pelican Town’s new farmer. After all, the little town had been without a farmer ever since Oliver’s grandfather passed a couple of years ago. Admittedly, Oliver didn’t really know his grandfather since he and Oliver’s dad didn’t really talk for some reason. So, the now debris ridden farm is now left to Oliver. He had only been in the Valley for 26 days but in that time, he managed to grow somewhat edible parsnips, potatoes, green beans, and even tried his luck at cauliflower. Oliver basically threw himself at his new life and didn’t really try to get to know his neighbors. Well. That was until the flower dance. Apparently, this little town had a dance, and Oliver realized he’d actually have to talk to people if he didn’t want to be standing uncomfortably in the corner with this guy who was basically drooling over this girl with blue hair. Oliver definitely wanted to avoid that next year. Oliver didn’t even know why he went in the first place since social functions were not his strong suit in any way.
Oliver tried to shake off the drowsiness of sleep and finally start his day. It was tiring waking up at 6 am on the dot every day after you're so used to waking up later in the morning when you’re so used to working the closing shift when Joja would allow it. All the farm work was tiring, and most days he contemplated why he even moved here. He shook off the feeling of drowsy overthinking as tugged on his work boots and made his way out of the tiny cabin he now called home.
Oliver stepped out of his little cabin and began to tackle his daily chores. He spent far longer than he was hoping watering his crops. So long that when he was done, he nearly forgot to go and pet his new two chickens and fill his dog Archer’s water bowl. He lugged his way over and patted the little chickens on their tiny, feathered heads then made his way to the dog bowl just outside his house and filled it with water. After all that was done, he then made the walk down to town to see what use he could be there. He at least wanted to be helpful to the townsfolk, even if he didn’t like the constant small talk.
The scenery on the way to the town was nice, big trees, the occasional bird, squirrel, or bunny scurrying away when he walked past them. It was a relatively peaceful and quiet walk, the only sounds being that of his own footsteps and nature itself. Once he was in town he made his way to the community board. He found the board to be a nice way to make some extra cash and it made him feel more productive. Even though he was already overworked. Guess he worked in customer service too long.
Once at the board he saw there was one request from Evelyn. He had met Evelyn before while the little old lady was watering the town's garden beds. She said he could call her granny; Oliver thought the gesture was nice but stuck with Evelyn but more commonly called her ma’am. Oliver looked over the request, which was neatly written, Evelyn was asking for a leek so she could surprise George since it was one of his favorite things. Oliver looked at how much the little old lady would pay for this leek and saw that she’d pay 150 gold for it. He grabbed the ad and immediately decided to walk down towards the forest. Last time Oliver was there he saw plenty of leeks around, there was no doubt he’d be able to find one before the end of the day.
He sighed and started walking through town to get to the forest. He walked briskly through the streets, not really feeling up for the small talk the towns folk always seemed to start up, so Oliver figured if he walked with a little urgency people would be less likely to try and talk to him. He walked past the saloon, a couple of houses, and eventually walked past Marnie’s ranch. Once in the forest he sucked in a deep breath, letting the forest air fill his lungs. The air here smelled of pine needles, animals, and damp foliage. That much made sense since it had rained yesterday, but Oliver continued on, mindlessly wandering, hoping to stumble upon a leek, and maybe some other foragables for some quick cash.
Eventually after roughly an hour or so of wandering, he found what he was looking for. He picked up the leek and started to walk at a leisurely pace back into town, wanting to savor the solidarity of the forest. Once back in town his pace quickened once more, wanting to avoid interaction, though Oliver didn’t know why he was so hesitant to meet more people. Well, the people around his age anyway, he already had to meet some of the people here like Lewis, Robin, and Marnie.
Oliver shook his head, he was overthinking again, overanalyzing every interaction he had. He had to keep reminding himself that he didn’t have to be as paranoid about the people in this town. This isn't the city. This is a small town where basically everything about you is public… Oliver shook his head again, trying to pull together his composer and prepare himself for a bit of small talk that was bound to happen as he completed this delivery. He made it to the house where Evelyn, George, and their grandson lived, and knocked on the old wooden door. He waited for a moment, then he heard footsteps approaching the door. The door gently swung open and the farmer locked eyes with the town's gridball jock. Oliver attempted a friendly smile, but customer service sucked that out of him a while ago.
“Uhm, I am the new farmer, I’m just delivering something to Evelyn. She posted something on the community board.”
Oliver explained, no, over explained. Jeez why did he feel like he had to explain everything he did. He realized that the boy in front of him stepped to the side to let him in, and Oliver dipped his head and stepped inside.
“So you’re the new guy huh?”
The boy spoke up, a small cocky smile on his face. Oliver paused and took in another deep breath to compose himself before responding.
“Yea, that’s me.”
Oliver said hurriedly, wanting to get this delivery over with but of course it couldn’t be that simple.
“Cool. I’m Alex. I guess I’ll be seeing you around?”
Alex asked. He closed the door behind Oliver and guided the farmer to the kitchen where Evelyn was making dinner.
“Yea. I guess so.”
Oliver replied simply. Though he was a little grateful that Alex led him to where Evelyn was because the last thing he wanted to do was wander around a stranger's house.
“Thanks.” Oliver mumbled to the jock. He then walked over to the little old lady cooking in the kitchen and cleared his throat to try and subtly let her know he was there.
“Uhm, I fulfilled the request you put up on the board ma’am.”
Oliver spoke softly as he handed over the leek he was holding in his arms.
“Oh, thank you dearie. Also, no need to call me ma’am, granny works just fine.”
The sweet little old lady said with a cheery smile. Her wrinkled face somehow made her look even friendlier, though Oliver thought most old ladies had that effect.
“Let me go get my purse.”
Evelyn excused herself from the kitchen as she shuffled her way towards the front door to grab the money she owed the farmer.
Oliver let out a sigh of relief when Evelyn walked away, it gave him a moment to get his shit together. He didn’t know why he was so damn anxious around the townsfolk. Well, he did. He didn’t think he fit in. And he didn’t that much was clear. Everyone knew everyone, and everyone knew everything about everyone, there were no secrets in small towns. It didn’t help that everyone stared at him like he was a marvel, or oddity.
Oliver then looked up, anxiously waiting for Evelyn to return only to realize that the boy- Alex was leaning against the entryway to the kitchen, staring at him with a cocky smirk and a curious look in his eyes.
“What?”
Oliver grumbled. He clearly wasn’t amused and had no idea what Alex was finding amusing.
“Nothing. We just don’t get new people in town is all.”
Alex dismissed with a small grin.
“I’m getting tired of being the new guy.”
Oliver grumbled. He was hoping he said that quiet enough, but it was clear he didn’t when Alex stood up and walked over to him.
“Fair enough. Besides, I bet a city boy like you isn’t used to small, rural towns.”
Alex said with a hint of a tease. Thankfully Evelyn came back with her purse in time to save him and to give him an excuse to leave.
“Alex. Be nice to the farmer.”
Evelyn chastised in a gentle voice. She then turned her attention to the farmer and gave him a warm smile.
“Sorry about that dearie. Here you are.”
She said with that same cheery smile and sweet voice as she handed Oliver the amount he was owed.
Oliver pocketed the cash and gave a small awkward smile to hopefully show he was grateful for the payment.
“Thank you ma’a- Evelyn. Anytime.”
Oliver corrected himself. His awkward smile softened to a small genuine one before he turned to walk out the door. Right as he was about to walk out something caught his attention.
“See you, farmer boy.”
Alex said with a cocky grin before chuckling a little to himself and walking down the hall out of sight. Oliver paused for a moment then gave a tiny wave before closing the door behind him. He sighed and decided that he’d stop by the saloon that evening to at least introduce himself to most of the townsfolk. He’d have to know his neighbors if he was going to live here for the rest of his life.
Chapter 2: The Luau
Summary:
Summer 11th year one. Oliver gets a last-minute crop from harvest for the Luau, a pepper he had luckily harvested the day before that was of good quality. Oliver had at least introduced himself to most of the townsfolk in town before the Luau, but even then, the thought of a large event makes him anxious. He introduces himself to the rest of the town and manages some small chit chat with everyone. After eating the soup, he goes to sit on the dock to get away from people when Alex approaches once more.

Chapter Text
Summer 11, year 1.
Today is the Luau. An event that Oliver was trying desperately to push to the back of his mind as it approached. Apparently, The Governor came down to Pelican town once a year and Lewis tried to suck up to the man as much as possible. Which unfortunately included a Luau. Well, it turned out that everyone was required to bring something for the soup, which Oliver didn’t know until he got a letter from Lewis the day before, telling him to bring something for the soup. Thankfully the peppers he planted at the start of Summer had crop to collect so Oliver made sure to save one of the best quality peppers he gathered. He hoped people didn’t mind a bit of spice.
Oliver was putting off watering his plants and feeding his animals, which he knew he should get out there and do, but the anxiety around having to go to the Luau was keeping him inside his house. Oliver would have to show up anywhere from 9:00am to 2:00pm, and Oliver was contemplating staying home. Then, Oliver’s dog, Archer came through the dog door and head butted him, reminding Oliver he needed to feed his animals. Oliver took a deep breath and moved a hand through the dog’s fur trying to calm his racing mind. He knew he shouldn’t be as anxious as he was about this event. After all he met almost everyone at the Saloon the one night he decided to try and brave small talk and introducing himself. But still he was anxious. There were still people he didn’t meet, and this was a small town. Everyone knew everything about everyone. There were no secrets, and Oliver didn’t know what people were saying about him.
Oliver was about to go into another anxious spiral of convincing himself to go to the Luau, but also trying to convince himself to just stay home, but then his dog Archer nudged his hand and barked impatiently. Oliver took in another breath before pulling on his dirty boots and stepping out the front door. He collected what he’d need to complete his chores and went on his way. First, he refilled Archer’s water bowl, and the pup immediately started to drink. Oliver smiled a little at that and went to water his plants. He still didn’t have sprinklers, then again Oliver didn’t really do well in the local mines. Once all the plants were watered, he made his way to his chicken coop to refill their trough of hay and collect their eggs. Then went to his newly constructed barn to do the same with his new calfs.
Once he was finally done with all his chores, he checked the watch on his wrist and saw that it was 10:30 am. He wiped the sweat from his brow and swept his brown hair back, away from his face. He decided he should go to the Luau to meet the rest of the towns folk and to just get away from the farm. He needed a change of scenery anyway. Oliver walked back to his little cabin and grabbed the pepper he collected the day before and began his trek to the beach. The walk from the farm to the town was as serene as always, and the walk-through town was a lot quieter since people were probably already down at the beach for the Luau.
When Oliver arrived at the beach it was crowded. There was a giant pot in the middle of a circle of buffet tables where people milled through to get something to eat. Some were dancing, some were eating, some stood in groups chatting and catching up, and some stood alone. Oliver decided to brave the people milling around the buffet and people standing alone first. He talked briefly to Pam about how good Gus’s cooking was, which led to Oliver going over to Gus to compliment the food he was yet to taste yet knew would be good. He then went to talk to Elliot who seemed a little annoyed that this was being held right outside his cabin, which Oliver could agree with, which then led to him being introduced to Leah, who was Elliot’s friend.
After a bunch of chit-chat, he ended up finding the Mullner’s, which led to more chatting with Evelyn. George was annoyed about being dragged to the Luau again, and Oliver agreed with how the old man was feeling. Evelyn ended up talking to Oliver about her grandson, Alex, who Oliver had been avoiding slightly after their first encounter. The two had talked a little afterwards, but it was mostly Alex boasting about sports and working out which Oliver couldn’t really relate with, but Evelyn talked about her grandson in a different light. The old woman talked about how Alex was so sweet and helpful which Oliver struggled to believe, but he didn’t doubt the woman.
Oliver ended up talking with Evelyn longer than he thought he would, and he excused himself by saying he had to put his item in the pot, which wasn’t a lie. He walked off and towards the pot, climbed up the small steps, and dropped the hot pepper he had with him into the pot which Marnie was stirring. Once Oliver dropped his item into the pot Lewis decided to gather everyone's attention.
“Well folks, it’s time once again for the potluck ceremony. I trust you all put high quality ingredients in the pot this year. We don’t want the governor to regret his trip to the valley!”
Lewis said in his usual faux cheeriness that he put on for gatherings.
“Well governor, would you do us the honor of tasting the soup?”
Lewis asked with a smile as he stepped aside to make space for the governor.
“Of course! I’ve been looking forward to this all year!” The governor said with a large grin as he shuffled over to the pot. He cleared his throat before ladling some soup in a bowl and finally taking a spoonful of soup to his lips for a taste. The governor was silent for a moment as he processed the flavors he was tasting before his face lit up.
“Oh my… that’s the best soup I’ve ever tasted!” The governor exclaimed with a wide grin. He generously ladled more soup into his bowl before waddling off to greedily enjoy his soup.
“You’re right! It’s delicious!” Lewis agreed after tasting a spoonful himself.
“Wonderful job, everyone! Now, who wants a taste?” Lewis called out as Marnie began to serve people with bowls of soup. Oliver was just glad that the governor didn’t mind pepper, or maybe nobody could taste it. Either way Oliver was glad he didn’t screw the soup up like he thought he would.
Oliver made his way to the back of the line for some soup, which was when Alex decided to join him in line. Oliver stiffened a little as the jock stood beside him, looking around as if he didn’t stand there intentionally. Thankfully the line for soup moved rather quickly and Oliver got his bowl of soup in just a few minutes. Once Oliver had his bowl, he made his way to the dock to eat. He didn’t really feel like talking to people, he felt socially drained from the sheer amount of small talk. This town may consist of 28 people but that didn’t make having to talk to everyone less exhausting.
Oliver sat down on the creaky wood of the dock as he let his feet dangle over the edge. Oliver let out a sigh of relief when he was alone. The chatting in the background was quieter which made Oliver’s tense body relax a little bit. As he took in the smell of the sea and relief of finally being alone, he finally began to eat the soup. It was surprisingly good despite not knowing what was in it besides what he added, and briefly thought about getting seconds when he remembered that he should probably grab whatever was left over from what Gus had made. That man’s cooking was great, and Oliver would be eating these leftovers for a while.
As Oliver was eating and unwinding from how much socializing he had to do, he heard footsteps approaching him. The old wood of the dock creaked under the feet of whoever was approaching. Oliver was very tempted to tell the person approaching to leave him alone, but he bit his tongue and kept quiet. Thinking if he just ignored them, they’d leave, or maybe it’s Willy going home.
Oliver was disappointed when he didn’t hear the footsteps retreat or the door of the fishing shop open and close. The person who was approaching ended up being Alex, who decided to take a seat right next to Oliver on the dock. Oliver tensed once more but continued to eat the soup left in his bowl and keep his head down.
“What are you doing sitting out here?”
Alex questioned. His voice still held that cocky tone, yet it was also a bit kinder? No, he must be imagining that part.
“Getting away from the crowd. It’s loud.”
Oliver admitted. He didn’t know why he was being so truthful about why he was out on the dock, alone. Then again, he didn’t really have a good excuse either.
‘Eh, fair enough.”
Alex replied simply. He adjusted how he was sitting so he’d be more comfortable and ate a spoonful of soup.
“The pepper is good. I know my grandpa was happy about that addition.”
Alex continued. George did like spicy things and probably added a pepper himself. Though for some reason being told that made Oliver feel a bit better, yet Alex's presence still had Oliver on edge.
“Thanks.”
Oliver replied. His response was bland and dry, but he didn’t necessarily feel like talking to people any longer. But he didn’t want to be known as a recluse, or hermit, even though that’s exactly what he was.
“What are you doing out here? I thought you’d be out there talking.”
Oliver asked, though not necessarily interested in the answer, but he shouldn’t be a jerk for no reason.
“Well, I wanted to get to know the mysterious farmer who doesn’t talk to anyone.”
Alex said in a joking tone, a small laugh escaping him, along with a small grin, which was different from the smirk Oliver was used to seeing him with.
“And everyone is dancing, and I felt worn out from working out. Also, Haley’s dancing with Leah.”
Alex added. He rubbed the back of his neck when he admitted that. Honestly Oliver was a little surprised that Haley was dancing with Leah since the two seemed so different but then again Oliver didn’t really know anything about anyone.
“Ah. So, you came over here because you got bored?”
Oliver asked bluntly. He didn’t really have the energy to try and seem pleasant. Though Oliver thought for a moment that maybe this meat headed jock might actually want to get to know him, that idea was quickly brushed off as he was painfully reminded how the jocks back at his high school in the city used to act.
“Well… sorta? Okay fine I’m bored, but seriously, you’ve been avoiding talking to basically everyone. Nobody really knows anything about you, and, well, I got curious.”
Alex admitted. He seemed to be genuine, but Oliver was still skeptical.
“Well, what’s there to know? I’m pretty boring. Nothing interesting going on over here.”
Oliver grumbled. He finished off his bowl of soup and set it to the side. He kept his head down and avoided Alex’s gaze.
“Pretty, sure, but boring? I don’t know that for sure yet.”
Alex said with a smirk on his face. Oliver’s cheeks flushed at the strange compliment he received, but knew it was just Alex dicking around.
“You always tease people like that?”
Oliver asked with a frown. He hated how flustered he got from that comment alone. He shook his head to try and clear it.
“Maybe.”
Alex replied teasingly. He leaned towards Oliver, that same cocky smirk still plastered on his face.
Oliver frowned and turned his head away again after Alex said that. Oliver kept telling himself that Alex was just being a jerk like most jocks.
“I think I’m going to go home now.”
Oliver said just loud enough to be heard before he stood up and started walking down the dock to get back to the beach and get those leftovers he was thinking about.
“Goodnight farmer boy!”
Alex called out as Oliver walked away. And once again Oliver raised a hand as a small wave goodbye.
As Oliver walked back home with leftovers in hand, he couldn’t help but think to himself that maybe he could be friends with that jock.
“No, that's stupid, don’t think like that.”
Oliver thought to himself as he walked home, his cheeks still a little flushed from that small comment.

Chapter Text
Fall 16, Year 1
Oliver sighed when he realized what day it was. It was the day for the Fall Festival. At least this time Lewis sent him a letter a week in advance so Oliver could at least mentally prepare himself for the sheer amount of people he’d be seeing. Apparently, people from out of town also come to this festival. Great. More people. At least Oliver wouldn’t have to talk to them. Or hopefully anyone this time around since the whole thing was just a carnival of sorts. The only reason Lewis sent him a letter a week before the festival was because there was a grange display in which Oliver was urged to participate in even though it wasn’t required. When Oliver asked Lewis about the grange display the day after he got the letter Oliver was only told,
“Well, you sell your goods and businesses are encouraged to participate.”
And it was left at that. Oliver didn’t really know what he’d put in his grange display other than some good quality crops since he was well, a farm. He eventually scoured enough high-quality items that he could put in the grange display and call it a day. Lewis said there’d be a prize for the winner, and in all honesty, Oliver hoped it’d be some cash.
Oliver finally dragged himself up and out of bed. He decided he wouldn’t wear his work clothes to this event since he figured he wouldn’t get any work done today. Which was unfortunate since his cranberries were ready for harvest, but he knew he wouldn’t have enough time to harvest them all properly if he wanted to be on time. Instead, he wore a simple green t-shirt, some cargo pants, and he put his dark brown hair into a small bun like thing. Oliver stepped out of his house and went around to feed all his animals; he wondered what he should expect at the carnival so he wouldn’t be too surprised by the scenery. Oliver figured he’d have an easier time with this event this time around since this time he was at least given a week's notice.
Oliver’s watch beeped once the time hit 9 AM and it was time to make his way to the festival being held in town. Oliver took a quick deep breath as he went to pet his dog Archer before he set off for town. Surprisingly, he wasn’t as anxious about this event, but that was probably because Oliver could just set up his grange display, wait for the results, and leave right after. He didn’t have to stick around to socialize or play games. He could just go, do what he needs to do, and leave. Yea, that sounded like a good plan.
Oliver made the familiar walk to town as he did it almost every day now. Sometimes even walking Archer through town to get to the beach when the weather was nice enough. One time on one of these walks to the beach Oliver ran into Alex walking his dog Dusty- no. Stop it. Stop thinking about him, it's stupid. Oliver shook his head to clear it as he finally arrived in town, and it was not at all what he was expecting. The first thing he saw was a prize booth with a red and white tent roof. That was every stand there. Bright red and white. There were small children running from stand to stand, people lined up for some burgers made by Gus, and long lines in front of tents for rigged games. Oliver instantly regretted not bringing some earplugs, or something to cancel out the noise. Why did he think a carnival wouldn’t be super loud?
Oliver grimaced at all the screaming as he made his way to the empty grange display, saved for him to participate. He stood in front of it as he rummaged through his bag to grab out all of the stuff he brought for it. He placed down a pepper he saved from the summer, a pumpkin, some corn, and some gems he found in the mines. As soon as he was finished setting up his grange display, he walked up to Lewis to tell him he was done setting up.
“Hey Lewis, I’m done setting up.”
“Wonderful, I’ll go judge the displays. Come back later and I’ll tell you the results.”
Lewis replied with that obviously fake, cheery grin as he began to walk towards the grange displays and tried his hardest to look like he was studying them closely.
Oliver walked away from Lewis and now didn’t know what he was going to do to pass the time. He could do the obvious and play some of the carnival games, maybe look around and look for a quiet place to hang out and to get away from all of the chattering. Oliver began to wonder about the carnival, passing a fishing tent, a slingshot tent, a clearly rigged spin the wheel, and a petting zoo. The whole time he walked some of the townspeople smiled at him, waved, and said a quick hello before running off with whatever group they were in going to the next tent. He got a sweet grin from Evelyn and a huff of acknowledgment from George, and some waves from Abigail and Sam.
Oliver eventually wandered far enough to find the last colorful tent which was next to a table full of wears that Clint had made. Some swords and a shield on display. Oliver made his way to the entrance of this tent, a little so curious, that even he couldn’t rationalize it to himself. The tent was placed in the graveyard, which was strange, and the Wizard who lived up in the tower near Marnie’s barn stood close by.
Oliver went over to the Wizard rather cautiously and when he was standing in front of the Wizard he struggled to form the first few words of a sentence.
“Hey, uhm… Wizard? What are you doing here..? I didn’t think a carnival would really be your thing?”
Oliver managed to say. He struggled to formulate words that didn’t make him sound insensitive, or overly nervous, but unfortunately, he sounded nervous as all hell.
“Ah, I’m here to say hello to an old friend of mine. She is such a lovely fortune teller, one of the best at her craft I must say.”
The Wizard said in his oddly cryptic tone of voice. Did he always have to sound so mysterious?
“Oh, okay… How accurate are her… predictions?”
Oliver asked. He wanted to punch himself in the gut for asking. Why didn’t he just turn around and leave? Why did he even ask, he barely believed the fortune teller on TV telling him how the “spirits were feeling”. Oliver only checked that channel to see if he’d have a good day in the mines or not, but he was still skeptical of the whole paranormal thing.
“Rather accurate I must say. Although your choices can change the outcome of what she predicts. It’s really up to you if her predictions come true.”
The Wizard replied as he stroked his purple beard.
“Go get your prediction, you may be surprised. Here, I’ll pay your fare.”
The Wizard said as he reached into his robe and pulled out some coin to pay the Oracle so Oliver could get a prediction. Was he really doing this? Well, it wouldn’t hurt, would it?
Oliver hesitantly walked into the tent and took a seat on the stool that was placed in front of a wooden table, the Oracle sat in front of him, her face hidden by her hood.
“Are you here for a prediction child?”
The Oracle asked in a raspy voice, like she had smoked for most of her life.
“I- uh, yes?”
Oliver stammered out. Anxiety pooled in his gut as he wished he could take back how he replied. Jeez why did he always sound like how he felt?
“Don’t be nervous child. I will give you a reading. Take a deep breath and try to calm your mind. Close your eyes, it may help.”
The Oracle tried to sooth Oliver, but it didn’t really help. Oliver closed his eyes and took shaky deep breaths until he was calm enough to try and clear his head. Once the Oracle sensed he was calmer than before she placed her boney, wrinkled hands on her crystal ball and began to speak.
“Ah, yes. You have a lovely future ahead of you. I see that your farm will prosper. Oh? What is this? Hm, I didn't expect this. I see you and a boy from this town running the farm together. Alex.”
Oliver’s cheeks turned red, and his mind began to swim in unfamiliar feelings when the Oracle said this. Oliver didn’t know how the Oracle meant that he and this boy would be running the farm together. He wanted to ask questions, but he didn’t want to mess up whatever the Oracle was doing.
“I see that you are happy. Very happy. Your anxiety will crumble for this person as you are never worried about them. You know they are there for you. Ah, the crystal ball has faded, that is all I can see for you child. My readings only happen if you want them to, I wish you luck child.”
The Oracle said in her raspy voice as she dismissed Oliver.
“Wait- what? What do you mean-”
Oliver was interrupted by the Oracle.
“You must find out yourself child.”
The Oracle dismissed. She looked to the Wizard to help her make Oliver leave. The Wizard walked towards Oliver and placed a hand on his shoulder and guided Oliver away.
Oliver shrugged the Wizards hand off his shoulder and began walking away from the tent. He didn’t have a destination and everything else was forgotten while Oliver’s mind could only focus on the Oracle’s words. “What did she mean I’ll run my farm with Alex? This is bogus, that can’t be real. Alex? Of all the people in this town?” Oliver thought to himself. His mind was racing and drowning in thoughts he couldn’t block out. Now all the sounds of the carnival flooded his mind along with the panicked thoughts he couldn’t help.
Oliver just kept walking in no particular direction. Just trying to find somewhere quiet. The whole way his head pulsed to the beat of his heart, and his breathing became irregular. He no longer could focus on blocking out all of the noises of chatter, and his stumbling and hurried walk was drawing the eyes of people which only made it worse. The townsfolk’s heads began to turn to his direction, a look of confusion and concern on their faces when they saw him. The strangers that traveled for this event stared at him with either concern or disgust, and the children those strangers brought just kept running and screaming.
Oliver’s hands went to cover his ears, but it didn’t help any. He kept stumbling around the town square in search of some corner or quiet place, but the barriers put up kept people from leaving the area. Tears began to well in his eyes, causing them to sting, which just meant more staring, which meant more panicking. He eventually hid behind a grange display and just curled up into a ball. His knees were tucked into his chest and his arms were wrapped around his legs while still covering his ears to try and block as much sound as he could, but it didn’t help any.
He sat with his back against the wall, his breathing erratic, and his mind racing. Now that his mind was in panic mode, every insecurity, every ill thought came pouring out while his mind was flooded with worry. As his mind raced and as it did, he muttered to himself that this was a stupid reason to be having a panic attack, why was he panicking? Over some dumb prediction? Why is everything so loud? The people in this town probably have rumors about me. Does anyone in this town actually like me? Oh god this town hates me. Why did I even move here?
Oliver’s mind continued to race for what seemed like forever and he couldn’t even pull himself out of it. He was hyperventilating, he was clawing at his hair, he was rocking back and forth and crying like a kicked dog. Over what? A prediction? No, that was just the kicker.
Oliver continued to mumble to himself everything he thought was wrong with him, while rocking back and forth with tears streaming down his cheeks. Along with everything he was feeling he was embarrassed because he was having a panic attack in the middle of the town square. Oliver was stuck inside his own head, which was swirling with everything he’d ever done wrong when suddenly there was a hand placed firmly on his shoulder and what sounded like someone talking to him.
Oliver tried to look at who had found him, but his tears blurred his vision. But even with his vision blurred from his own tears he could still make out the brown hair, and green jacket, and instantly the hand on his shoulder was someone he knew. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t want anyone in this town to see him like this ever, but of course it was his luck that the person who found him like this was the very person that damn Oracle talked about. Oliver wanted to push the boy away, to say he was fine and to leave him alone, but he couldn’t even find his own voice. So, all Oliver could do was sit there, sniffling, and shaking. He could see that Alex was talking to him, but he couldn’t hear a word he was saying. It all sounded muffled and like a blur. Like trying to hear when your heads under water.
Oliver saw the boy in front of him look to the ground as if he was thinking before Oliver saw those green eyes return to his own. Oliver wanted to curl up and hide but that didn’t seem possible. Oliver was already thinking about every horrible thing Alex could think of him because of this when suddenly he felt himself being moved? No, embraced? Impossible. Oliver was stunned out of his panic when he felt arms wrapped around him and just warmth.
“W-what are you doing?”
Oliver croaked out, barely finding his voice but it sounded so pathetic.
“Trying to calm you down. Nothing else worked so I tried confusing you out of it.”
Alex explained as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Yet Alex’s voice was missing its usual snarkiness, and he sounded… concerned?
Oliver didn’t say anything back and just hid his face in the boy’s shoulder. He didn’t want to see how Alex was reacting to this whole thing. Oliver wanted to just disappear.
“Well, now that I know you can hear me, what happened? Are you okay?”
Alex asked with what seemed like genuine concern. He tried to pull Oliver away from his shoulder, but Oliver wouldn’t budge. As much as Oliver hated to admit, the hug felt kinda nice.
“Yea, I-I’m fine. Just got overwhelmed is all.”
Oliver tried to dismiss, but it was clear Alex wasn’t having it.
“I don’t believe that.”
Alex replied. Oliver was almost relieved to hear some teasing in Alex’s tone.
“The carnival became too much. All the little things stacked, and then this happened... I’m fine really.”
Oliver explained with as little detail as possible. It wasn’t a lie; he was just leaving a few things out.
“If you were really fine you wouldn’t be holding onto me like your life depended on it.”
Alex pointed out with a slight chuckle, trying to lighten the mood and to hopefully get a laugh out of Oliver.
Oliver didn’t even realize he was basically death gripping Alex’s varsity jacket, which caused Oliver to get flustered. He didn’t want to pull away because it would show how Alex’s little comments got to him, but if he didn’t, he’d only be proving Alex’s point.
“It’s okay, I’m joking.”
Alex tried to remedy his little joke in case Oliver didn’t react well to it. Alex was actually really concerned for Oliver. He always got the sense that Oliver didn’t do well in crowds, but Alex didn’t think it was this bad.
“You… can stay as long as you need.”
Alex ended up saying. He didn’t mind holding the shaky boy in his arms for as long as Oliver needed.
“Thank you.”
Oliver squeaked out. His words almost caught in his throat, which made it damn near impossible to hear what he said but it wasn’t much of an issue when your face is rather close to someone’s ear. With that realization that Oliver was super close to Alex at the moment it only made him more flustered.
“Yea…”
Alex replied quietly. The two of them ended up hiding behind the grange displays for roughly 20 or so minutes before Oliver decided he couldn’t sit behind a grange display hugging a boy for much longer. Oliver still wasn’t entirely ready to brave the carnival and Alex caught wind of Oliver’s hesitance to leave.
“Hey, let’s get you something to eat, huh? Some water too.”
Alex suggested, but didn’t really leave Oliver much of a choice and started to walk with Oliver towards where Gus was still barbecuing burgers. Alex walked up to Gus, with an arm around Oliver’s shoulder as he smiled widely at Gus.
“Hey Gus, could we get Oliver a burger? He passed out earlier and I found out he hasn’t eaten today.”
Alex asked. He sounded confident as always, and Oliver was grateful that Alex had lied for him. Oliver was too embarrassed that he had a panic attack behind a grange display.
“Yes, of course, right away. Alex, go take Oliver to sit down on one of those benches. I'll bring over a burger as soon as this patty is ready.”
Gus replied with a sense of urgency. Gus certainly wouldn’t leave Oliver without food for a minute more than he had to.
Alex guided Oliver over to one of the picnic tables and sat down next to Oliver. A look of concern still on his face as he watched Oliver slink into the seat. Oliver obviously was embarrassed and just wanted to go home at this point but was still rather grateful that Alex decided to take it upon himself to help Oliver.
Gus brought over a plate with a burger soon after Oliver and Alex sat down, and the plate was placed down in front of Oliver. Gus looked at Oliver with a concerned look on his face.
“Alright, you eat that, I’m going to go find you a water bottle.”
Gus sounded concerned, but relieved now that Oliver had food in front of him as he went to go find a water bottle for Oliver.
Alex looked over at Oliver, trying to gauge if Oliver was stable enough to sit up on his own. Once Alex decided he could let go he took his arm back and leaned onto the picnic table. He looked at Oliver with concern filled eyes that didn’t help Oliver from feeling guilty about souring Alex’s day with his problems.
“Hey, eat up.”
Alex nudged Oliver with his elbow gently when he saw Oliver spacing off. Alex wanted to keep this boy in the present and out of his head.
“Oh. Right.”
Oliver replied meekly as he picked up the burger and began to slowly pick at it. He was still mostly in his head but at least now he wasn’t shaking, and he wasn’t crying. He would still sniffle a bit but there were no tears.
“I’ve seen you around town more.”
Alex pointed out of seemingly nowhere. Oliver figured Alex was trying to spark some sort of conversation.
“Yea, I had to buy more seeds. And Archer deserved a beach trip.”
Oliver replied simply. He took another bite of his burger and realized he actually was pretty hungry.
“Yea, I saw you there. Dusty had a good time playing with Archer.”
Alex started. He didn’t sound cocky, or sarcastic. It was always so strange hearing Alex sound genuine for some reason.
“We should do weekly meetups so the dogs can hang out.”
Alex suggested. He turned his head to see how Oliver would react to his request.
“I think Archer would like that. But winter is approaching so we won’t be able to go on beach trips soon.”
Oliver pointed out once he was done chewing on his burger, taking another bite once he was done talking.
“Then we can do hikes in the mountains.”
Alex suggested. Oliver wondered why Alex was so insistent on spending time with him. Oliver wasn’t exactly friendly with the jock. So why?
Gus reappeared with some water bottles in hand. He placed one in front of Oliver and another in front of Alex.
“Alright I found some water. Drink up.”
Gus instructed. He took some extra water bottles to keep near him in case others needed water.
Oliver gave a small gratuitous smile and took a sip of water.
“So, what do you say?”
Alex pressed. Oliver took another bite of burger to give himself more time to think before speaking. He decided to at least humor Alex’s request.
“Sure.”
Oliver replied simply, but that simple reply seemed to make Alex so happy. Oliver felt a little better about his choice upon seeing Alex smile about it. Oliver told himself it would be him paying back for today.
The two of them continued to chat a little at that picnic table while Oliver ate his burger. Oliver felt a little better about having Alex around, and their interactions didn’t feel nearly as forced. Well, at least to Oliver it didn’t. Maybe that Oracle is right… no, don’t think like that. Stop it.
“Ahem, grange display competitors, please come down to hear your placement!”
Lewis announced over a megaphone. Alex looked over at Oliver as if asking a question without speaking.
“Did you make one?”
Alex finally asked after taking a sip of water.
“Yea, but I doubt it’ll win.”
Oliver admitted. As soon as he said he had made a grange display, Alex stood up and looked at Oliver expectantly.
“What?” Oliver asked with the slightest hint of a chuckle.
“Let’s go hear your placement.”
Alex answered simply. There was a smile on Alex’s face the moment he heard even an inkling of a laugh from Oliver.
“Okay, okay, let’s go.”
Oliver said with a slight smile on his face as he stood up. He looked over at Alex before he started to walk towards the grange displays. Oliver gave a quick, grateful smile and wave towards Gus for his help before walking down the steps towards the town square.
“Ah, there he is. We can begin.”
Lewis spoke once he saw Oliver walk over towards the displays. Oliver stood towards the back as always, and Alex stood right next to him. It was weird having someone who liked his company around him. He’d get used to it eventually.
“We shall do this in reverse order. In last is Willy with his… fish display.”
Lewis announced, clearly trying not to gag at the mention of fish.
“In third we have Marnie.”
Lewis said almost begrudgingly. Oliver knew he was probably forced to be fair since there were so many visitors.
“In second we have Pierre with his produce.”
Lewis announced. Which only left one person. One display. It was Oliver.
“And in first we have our new farmer. Oliver.”
Lewis announced with as much fake cheerfulness he could muster. Oliver looked over at Alex with disbelief in his eyes. This was only Oliver’s first year in Pelican Town, and he managed to win the grange display? Oliver was looking at Alex for confirmation that he had heard Lewis correctly.
“Here is your prize.”
Lewis said as he handed over tickets for the carnival. Oliver was a bit disappointed that the prize wasn’t cash, but this was a small town, what did he expect?
“What am I supposed to do with these?”
Oliver questioned aloud as he and Alex walked through the festival.
“I guess we gotta play some games.”
Alex said with a grin. Oliver looked up at him and had a “are you kidding me” look on his face. He rolled his eyes and smiled as he nudged Alex with his elbow.
“I guess we do.”
Oliver agreed with a grin on his face. He could get used to this.

Chapter Text
Winter 25 year 1.
Oliver woke up this morning uncomfortably cold. Everything was bitterly cold even though he left his fireplace burning overnight. The fire must have gone out while he was sleeping. Oliver almost wanted to stay in bed, ignore his chores, and cling onto the last semblance of warmth that the blankets gave him. Then he realized what day it was. Damn it. It’s the Winter Star Festival today…
Oliver begrudgingly pulled himself out of bed, shivering when he felt cold, bitter air hit his skin. He quickly pulled a thick, warm, and most importantly, comfortable sweater over his head and pulled his overalls over. He tried to get ready as quickly as he could so he could warm himself up. Maybe even get the fire going again depending on how much time he wasted.
He looked at his watch and saw that it was 7:30AM and he let out an exhausted sigh. He thought he would have been used to this life by now. Especially since it’s almost been a year of him living here. Hell, he’s been here long enough that even small talk was almost not a chore anymore. Almost.
Oliver hurried outside to get the rest of his chores done before he needed to damn near sprint to town square to be at the festival in time. Time was ticking by rather quickly this morning and Oliver couldn’t pinpoint why. Maybe it was because he was supposed to give Evelyn a gift today? Or maybe it was because he was nervous yet curious on who his mysterious gift giver would be? God, he hoped it wasn’t Alex, that’d be so awkward.
He managed to finish feeding and collecting his animals' goods all before 8:30. Without any crops to worry about he felt he had too much time on his hands. At least he was mining more. Mining meant no people, and that made Oliver happy. Though Alex noticed Oliver going to the mountains almost every day to go mining and started making a habit to have his ‘morning jog’ at the same time. Oliver didn’t know how to feel about it most days. Some days it was sort of nice to have the dorky jock around, but most days he wished to be left alone. He only had so much social battery and in this tiny town that battery was run ragged some days.
Oliver shook his head to snap himself out of his thoughts. He tried focusing on how today would play out. Making a plan in his head on how he would handle everything. Though last time he did that he had a panic attack, and everything went off the rails… No. Stop thinking about that, the Oracle is probably wrong… Probably.
He stepped back into his house and went into his fridge and grabbed the chocolate cake that he had made last night for Evelyn. He was so glad he got someone he at least knew. He at least knew more than just Evelyn’s name. He was so grateful that she had let on that she loved sweets even though her grandson was overly healthy. He really hoped that Evelyn would like the cake, or at least like the gesture if it didn’t taste good. It probably tasted horrible; he didn’t dare taste test it. Especially not since it was a gift…
Oliver sucked in a cold, bitter breath and exhaled it, watching his breath condensate in the air. He then went back outside and started the trek towards town square. The route was becoming very familiar to the point where he started to tune out the chirping birds, or the trees shaking in the wind. He was becoming rather used to life in the Valley. Almost enjoying it. The solitude it gave him was a lot nicer than his horrible office job in the city.
Oliver was almost immediately greeted with the smell of freshly made food that Gus made. There was surprisingly no stand run by Piere at this event. Maybe Coraline finally convinced him to sit down and be a family. As Oliver walked around, he saw that every family sat together and that there were just enough seats for every family at their table. Oliver then started to panic. He didn’t know where the hell he was going to sit tonight. Oh god. Was he going to have to intrude on some family’s family time and just be a stranger at the table? Or was he going to sit at Leah, and Elliot’s table? Those two were like strange siblings, which would be another “family” he’d be intruding on… Oh God.
Oliver took a deep breath. He couldn’t have a repeat of what happened at the Fall Festival. He couldn’t, that was really embarrassing… Oliver decided that he would just give Evelyn her gift now and deal with his seating issue and the anxiety that surrounded it after he dealt with this task first. Yea that’s a good idea.
Oliver slowly made his way towards the Muller table, trying his hardest not to bump into anyone so he didn’t have to repeat a whispered “sorry” a million times. Once he made it to the table, he cleared his throat and tried to speak up but of course nothing came out and he just opened and closed his mouth a few times. He was about to try speaking again but thankfully Evelyn finally noticed him and gave him that overly friendly old lady smile.
“Oh hello dearie! How are you today sweetheart?”
Evelyn asked enthusiastically. She was clearly happy to see the young man. She always seemed to have a resting smiling face, even with her wrinkled and aged skin.
“I’m doing alright Evelyn. Thank you.”
Oliver began. He was shifting on his feet with his arms behind his back, holding the chocolate cake he made for her.
“I actually have something for you.”
Oliver finally chirped out. He then revealed the chocolate cake he was holding and held it out to her, watching closely for any sign of disapproval.
“Oh dearie, it's wonderful! Did you make this? It looks delicious!”
Evelyn said with great delight in her tone. She was already rather happy with it being the holidays, but she managed to look even happier if possible.
“I’m glad you like it.”
Oliver said honestly. He let out a quiet sigh of relief. Letting out a breath he didn’t even realize he was holding in the first point. Oliver now only had two things to worry about. Where the hell he was going to sit, and who his gifter was.
“You know what dearie, how about you sit with us at our table. I’m sure Alex won’t mind, after all he’s been taking his jogs with you. Oh, and George won’t mind either. He may seem grumpy but he’s warming up to you dearie.”
Evelyn offered. Oliver almost caved in on himself in relief. That was one less thing for him to worry about. Even if it added that level of awkwardness that he didn’t want to face by being at the same table as Alex.
“Oh, that is very kind of you. I don’t want to overstep though… Are you sure it’s alright if I sit with you guys?”
Oliver asked for confirmation. Damn it he should have just said yes and sat down. What if she changes her mind-
“Of course, dearie. Come, sit down.”
Evelyn pointed to a chair across from her and where George would presumably sit. Oliver immediately sat down and shoved his hands into his lap like an awkward kid. He hated how awkward he still felt around this family. He knew it was all because of that Oracle and her damn prediction about him and Evelyn’s grandson. It always sat there in the back of his mind every time he even thought of Alex.
Oliver watched as people stood up to go grab the food that Gus had made. As always it was a giant buffet that smelled so good, but Oliver knew he probably wouldn’t even touch half the items on that table because of how picky he was. He hated that part of him too. He couldn’t eat what the others did and said was good. And the only reason he couldn’t even put the food in his mouth was because it smelled off.
Oliver picked a few of the foods and placed them on his plate and hurried back over to the Mullner table. He’d rather not get criticized for his food choices or lack thereof at the moment. Once he was seated back at the Mullner table he waited for the rest of the family to take their seats at the table before he started eating. He was always told it was rude to start eating before everyone else as a kid, so he sat there and waited. He watched George pull up to the table and immediately start munching on his food with no regard for waiting. Then Evelyn came over and sat down in her chair, and like Oliver, waited for the final member of the table to show before eating.
Then Alex made it to the table and pulled up a chair right next to Oliver. Alex set down his plate and sat down in his chair. Once he was seated Evelyn began eating, which told Oliver it was fine to start eating. Oliver stared straight at his plate, hoping to avoid even glancing at Alex or his direction. The last thing Oliver wanted was to have yet another awkward as hell interaction with the jock. Last big event he saw Alex at was when he had a panic attack and ended up getting a god damn hug from the man.
Oliver still thinks back to that sometimes. And how oddly comforting it was? No. Stop. Keep eating. Don’t look at him.
“Hey Ollie.”
Alex began, getting Oliver’s attention. Why the nickname… and why didn’t he hate it?
“What.”
Oliver replied dryly. He had a mouthful of garlic bread in his mouth when he spoke. As soon as he noticed he covered his mouth with his hand.
“Who was the lucky person to get a gift from you?”
Alex asked with a hint of a tease in his voice. He had that cocky smirk that never seemed to rub off his face no matter what. Except for when Oliver had a panic attack- No. Stop. Not right now please.
“Uhm…”
Oliver started tripping over his words, which only seemed to make that damn smirk on Alex’s face grow. “Your grandmother. I made her a chocolate cake.” Oliver finally managed to reply. He kept his eyes down, trying to avoid that intense emerald gaze Alex seemed to have.
Oliver looked over and saw that Evelyn had cut herself a piece of the cake that he had made and had served it to herself and had tasted it. She seemed happier than ever, which made Oliver smile a tiny bit. Nothing too noticeable.
“Oh she loves that stuff. Good choice. She’ll have that in the fridge for a week at most, and nobody will be allowed to touch it.”
Alex said with a small laugh as he continued to gobble down his food. Oliver could have sworn he had eaten half his plate between sentences.
“Well glad I did something right.”
Oliver mumbled. Though Alex still managed to hear him. He always did. It annoyed him sometimes.
“That you did. Say, were you going to eat that?”
Alex asked as he pointed towards the mashed potatoes drowned in unwanted gravy. Oliver pushed his plate towards Alex almost too eagerly.
“You can have it.”
Oliver said, trying his best to not sound disgusted. After all, Gus poured his heart and soul into the food he made, and Oliver felt terrible not liking someone’s cooking.
Alex seemed delighted when Oliver pushed him his plate and started eating the mashed potatoes with unnatural speed. It was almost as disturbing as that one time he made the mistake of giving him a raw egg… He shuddered at the memory and wished to never remember that again.
After Alex finished what was left of Oliver’s plate, everyone was done eating. That was when Oliver remembered he still hadn’t received his gift. Maybe whoever got him forgot, or just didn’t get anything since he was new to town still. Then Alex tapped him on the shoulder to snap him out of his thoughts. He damn near squeaked. God, he hated that he squeaked like a squeaky toy when surprised.
“Hey Ollie, I got you something.”
Alex said with a small smile on his face. Not that cocky smirk. An actual smile. Damn it Alex was who got him. Damn it.
Oliver didn’t say anything in return. He just stared up at Alex with deep hazel eyes, waiting for Alex to say the rest of his sentence. Damn it why the nickname?!
“So… I got you. And I thought long and hard about what to get you. I actually got a challenge since you're new and nobody knows what you like.”
Alex began. Alex looked… nervous? Impossible, Oliver is imagining it. He has to be.
“But since I’ve been walking with you to the mountains everyday… I figured it’s rather dark in those dingy caves so… I got you a glow ring.”
Alex seemed like he wanted to say more, but also didn’t so he wouldn’t embarrass himself. As if Alex could embarrass himself.
“You know… To keep you safe.”
Alex finally finished. Oliver was rather touched by the gesture. Alex wanted him safe? That felt so odd, yet it also made sense… After all it was Alex that stuck by his side when he had that panic attack at the Fall Festival…
“I don’t really know what to say…”
Oliver began but was instantly cut off.
“A thank you would be nice?”
Alex said with that usual teasing tone in his voice. Thank goodness. Alex was back to being what Oliver expected again.
“Okay, okay. Thank you… for caring about my safety in the mines.”
Oliver finished. He was shifting around in his seat awkwardly under Alex’s intense gaze.
“You’re welcome!”
Alex said with an exaggerated chipper tone. That constant cocky grin on his face still present as usual.
“Here. Let me walk you home. See how well that glow ring actually works in the dark huh?”
Alex offered. He stood up and offered a hand towards Oliver to help him up.
Oliver hesitantly accepted the hand. He was quickly hoisted up that once he was on his feet he had to keep hold on Alex’s hand to regain his balance. Once he was stable, he took his hand back, and he could have sworn he saw Alex pout for a brief moment. But once Oliver looked back Alex still looked like his usual self.
“Okay fine. If you insist. I can walk home by myself mind you. I do it every day.”
Oliver retorted. He waited for Alex to start walking, and once he set off, Oliver followed closely.
“Maybe I need to change that then. Make sure you don't get killed in those caves.”
Alex replied teasingly, though Oliver had a feeling that Alex was serious about what he said.
Oliver kept walking besides Alex down the path that led to his farm. He half expected Alex to stop at the entrance to his farm and say goodbye there. But no. Alex walked him to his door. Right as they reached the door to Oliver’s farmhouse Alex paused, causing Oliver to pause and stare at Alex with a questioning gaze.
Just like that, Oliver was quickly pulled into an oddly firm and warm embrace. It took him a good few seconds to even process that he was being hugged. He didn’t think that he could escape the jock’s strong grip on him even if he tried.
Oliver simply stood there awkwardly, overly aware of his cheeks turning bright red. His mind simply went blank as he stood there not processing a damn thing happening around him at the moment. He hated yet ever so slightly enjoyed the feeling. As he stood there dazed, he felt something brush against the top of his head, then he was suddenly let go.
Oliver almost stumbled when he was let go because of how firmly he was being held. But he quickly regained his balance and looked up at Alex puzzled. He saw the jock damn near bright red in the cheeks. Alex was avoiding HIS gaze. Oliver didn’t know why. He was rather dazed still.
“Ah, well. Goodnight.”
Alex said abruptly, turning away from Oliver abruptly and started walking away from the farmhouse.
“Goodnight.”
Oliver said in reply rather quietly. Once he saw that Alex was off the farm Oliver turned around and went back into his house to finally get some sleep.
Why the hell was Alex of all people flustered?
Notes:
So, I'm thinking of maybe making the next chapter Alex's POV... So let me know if that's a good idea or not. ALSO! Should the next chapter be just a random day in spring? I feel like saving the flower dance for something special :]
Chapter 5: What have I done
Summary:
The morning after Alex gets home from walking Oliver to his door and beating himself up the whole way back for actually kissing Oliver, even if it was just on the top of his head. He has to come to terms with the fact that he likes the farmer, but most of all that he likes men. (Basically, Alex’s pov of how he feels about Oliver and just how drastically different it is. Would not be a slow burn if Alex had his way)
TW: Internalized homophobia
Notes:
Hello! I am SO sorry for making you all wait so long on this chapter. The Stardew hyper fixation has decided to return to me today, so I finally wrote another chapter. I think the real slow burn of this story is how long it takes me to update... Thank you for waiting whether you were patient or not, this still means so much to me. Enjoy your read people

Chapter Text
Winter 26, year 1
Alex woke up with an odd sense of dread. He had woken up later than usual and his mind was still reeling from last night. That was probably the longest he’s gotten Oliver to talk to him instead of Oliver just sitting there listening to his yammering every time Alex tagged along for the long hike to the mines. Damn it he got Oliver a glow ring. A ring. But at least it was a ring that would guarantee Oliver’s safety in those damp, dark mines.
Alex couldn’t escape Oliver or at least mentions of that damn farmer every day. He didn’t want to escape him though. Alex didn’t know why. And even if he did know, he was avoiding the reason. Every single day he either was walking Oliver to the mines, having what he thought were rather pleasant conversations. Even if he was the one doing most of the talking. Then when he’d get home, he’d hear grandma talking about how sweet and thoughtful the farmer was. Damn it Alex couldn’t go anywhere without hearing someone in town talking about the ‘mysterious farmer’. Alex didn’t think Oliver was that mysterious. In fact, other townsfolk would ask him about what the farmer was like.
Alex managed to get out of bed and stumble into his bathroom to splash some cold water onto his face, trying to wake himself up a bit. Once the icy cold water hit his face, he shivered a little but quickly ignored it. His mind was still reeling. Why the hell did he do that?! Of course, right as he started actually getting the farmer’s trust, and hell, maybe even managed to befriend Oliver, Alex had to ruin it for himself. It was one thing to hug Oliver when that boy was already so skittish… but to KISS him?! Oh, Alex was in deep trouble. Would Oliver even talk to him anymore? Would he even look in his direction anymore?
Alex sat back down on his bed; his face buried in his hands. He could feel how badly his cheeks were burning. Not only did he hug a boy. He kissed one. Even if it was just on Oliver’s head, Alex had fucking kissed him. Sure, Alex had been wrestling this stupid little crush he had on the farmer, but he was convinced he went too far. What does he do now?! Go back to the farm and apologize?! What was he going to say?! “Sorry I accidentally kissed you. Don’t hate me please?” Alex was just screwed. Not only was it wrong to like boys, but it was even worse to like a newcomer. Even his grandpa said so! Alex was on a swift and one way trip to becoming the embarrassment of Pelican Town. Granny would know what to do… but what if she thought the same thing?! That even the idea of liking someone of the same gender was some sort of freak of nature? Some sort of crime against mother nature herself?
He didn’t really want to find out if his grandma would support him or not. He really didn’t want to be kicked to the streets with nowhere to go. So, he wasn’t going to tell her. Or George… But he still needed to apologize to the farmer…
Alex finally pushed himself back up to his feet, pulling on his usual bright red hoodie before exiting his room. He was making his way towards the front door down the hall when Granny stopped him.
“Alex, dear, I was about to go check on you… you haven’t had breakfast yet and I was worried you were feeling unwell.” Evelyn spoke in her soft and creaky voice. She had some pancakes and scrambled eggs set out on a tray for him. Presumably to bring up to his room so he wouldn’t have to get up. Sometimes Alex took Granny for granted, but right now he was on a mission.
“Ah, Granny, you didn’t have to- I’m okay I promise. I’ll be back before supper. I gotta go see the farmer.” Alex dismissed with a look of slight guilt on his face as he tried to push past Evelyn, but of course she wouldn’t budge.
“At least take something to eat with you dear. It’s cold out.” Evelyn insisted in a worried tone. She started placing the food she prepared into tupperware containers so Alex could eat on his way to the farm.
“You sure do hang out around that farmer boy a lot… That’s a good thing, he’s a nice boy, and a good influence on you.”
Evelyn said as she handed Alex the tupperware and a fork to take with him.
“Thanks Granny! I’ll be home soon!”
Alex said as he took the tupperware and rushed out the front door, closing it before Evelyn had a chance to return her goodbye. Alex was out the door, jogging over to the farmhouse with breakfast in hand. A nice run through town was sure to clear his head… right? It would at least make apologizing to the farmer a little easier… at least that’s what Alex hoped for.
After jogging for roughly five minutes Alex had barely broken a sweat during his little run, but the crip and biting air near the farm made his breathing hurt a little. He walked the rest of the way to the house itself. He allowed himself to get distracted by the usually lush fields that are now empty, and the faint sounds of livestock not too far away. Once Alex was at the front door to Oliver’s cabin he stopped and took a deep breath before going to knock on the door. Right as he was lifting his hand to knock on the door, the heavy wooden door swung open, and a slightly frazzled Oliver was standing in the doorway.
“Uhm… morning. Uh, sorry for the sudden visit but I came to apologize about yesterday… what I did was really uncalled for and I understand if-” Alex began to ramble his apology before to his surprise Oliver stopped him.
“What are you apologizing for? You didn’t do anything? I don’t think…” Oliver interrupted Alex’s little rambling of an apology. Oliver looked incredibly confused. That’s when it struck Alex. Oliver didn’t know Alex had accidentally kissed his head. Oh, this was incredibly awkward now…
“Uhm, for uh, suddenly hugging you last night. Yea. Yea that’s it. I, uh, should have asked first.”
Alex answered. He mentally slapped himself in the face. Really? That was the best he could come up with. That by itself didn’t really warrant a visit to the farm.
“Oh, uh… It’s fine, I guess. I didn’t really care.” Oliver said simply. Though Alex knew at this point that nothing Oliver said was simple. There was always something going on in that brain of his.
“Was just about to head to the mines for some gold…” Oliver finished. Now Oliver sounded sheepish. Alex knew Oliver was probably getting a little overwhelmed, but damn it, he started this little trip so now he had to act like he was here to walk Oliver to the mines as per usual.
“Going to finally test out that glow-ring I gave yea? Good.” Alex asked rhetorically, answering his own question. The farmer then started walking down the steps of the wooden front porch and over to the little path that led through the mountains. A little short cut to the mines from the farm. Alex followed Oliver without much to say. Alex usually was never this quiet on their morning walks. Usually, Alex was talking about whatever gridball game was on last, or how his training was going, but this time he was silent. Letting the sound of snow crunching beneath boots and the sound of wildlife on the trail fill the silence.
The farmer entered the mines, sparing Alex only a small wave before disappearing into the depths. Alex would stay there. Outside the mineshafts entrance until Oliver returned. Sometimes Alex would make a small trip to the spa to relax but not this time. He sat right at the mouth of the cave. Waiting for Oliver to surface one more. Alex never left because he always wanted to make sure the farmer made it out unscathed. And if Oliver was injured, Alex always accompanied him to Harvey’s office. Damn it Alex really liked this boy. He almost didn’t care if it was wrong. Almost.
The farmer surfaced a few hours later. Covered in dirt and debris. Alex gave Oliver a once over to check for any visible cuts. He found none thankfully. He wiped his hands off on his jeans before he turned his back to the farmer. Prepared to walk Oliver home for the night… like he did yesterday.
“Did the glow-ring work?” Alex asked to break the silence. That whole time while he waited, he couldn’t stop thinking about Oliver. How much he treasured every smile he pulled from the man, every laugh, every emotion that wasn’t fear based, Alex found himself memorizing and adoring. It was so wrong though…
“Yea… Could actually see a few feet in front of me for once.” Oliver replied plainly. His voice is a little gruff, probably from disuse. One doesn’t really need to talk in the mines.
“Thanks. It was a thoughtful gift.”
Oliver added. And oh, did that make Alex’s heart squirm in his chest. He was hoping he wasn’t blushing and if he was that it could be passed off as the cold.
“You’re welcome… I didn’t want you to get hurt in those mines. They were abandoned for a reason.” Alex replied. He knew far too well why that mine was originally abandoned. Hell, George reminded him anytime he overheard Alex talking to Gran about him walking the farmer to the mines. Deep down. Alex didn’t want Oliver to get hurt like his grandpa did. But Alex also didn’t want to limit the man.
The walk back to the farmhouse was just as quiet as the walk there. Only the sound of snow crunching, and the wind could be heard. Once at the little wooden cabin Alex hesitated to say his goodbyes. He almost didn’t really want to leave. But he didn’t want to crowd the farmer. So, he settled with saying goodnight to the farmer.
“Uh, goodnight. I’ll see you around.” Alex said briskly. He once again didn’t really give the farmer a chance to say anything back before he was walking down the steps of the porch and heading towards the path that led back to town. He didn’t try to hug the farmer this time, and definitely didn’t try to pull the stunt he did last night again. And Alex wasn’t ever going to mention the fact that he had kissed Oliver while walking him to his house on the night of the winter star. Hell no. He was keeping that kiss his little secret if he could help it for as long as he could.
He could barely admit it to himself. “I think I have a crush on the new farmer boy.”
Notes:
Thank you so much for reading! It really means a lot to me, really it does. I think my inconsistent uploading times is what really makes this story a slow burn lmao
Anyways, what should I do for spring of year 2? I'm personally thinking I do a do over of the flower dance and they actually dance... Make things speed along a lil bit you know
