thief in the night

Summary:

The second last thing Fit expected was to find a Viera rogue breaking into his shop in the middle of the night.

Written for Day 3 of HideDuo Week: AU

Work Text:

Fit felt like he was already on the verge of waking up when he heard the alarms go off. Something in his subconscious had alerted him that there was trouble and then in the next seconds, he was throwing off his blankets and moving to re-attach his arm. He could see the red lights flashing from downstairs, the alarms chiming louder than he remembered them being. Ramón had been awoken too, although Fit wasn't sure if it was the alarms doing or his own. He frowned at the young boy, who's tail was always starting to thrash about in the bed. He had joined Fit in bed earlier in the night, having awoken from some bad nightmares. He looked just as anxious now.

"Hey. It's okay Ramón. I'll deal with whoever it is and we'll be safe. But you have to stay up here, okay?"

"Don't hurt them too badly," Ramón signed back at him, looking towards the stairs that would lead down into the blacksmith shop proper. Fit patted his head, not sure why Ramón had asked that, but promising his son that he would be careful. He then headed downstairs to find whoever it was who was stupid enough to not only break into his home and work, but also to trip the alarms. They couldn't be a good thief, but also, Ramón's alarm system was rather advance. He had boasted about how impressive and smart his kid was. Going to one day invent something that would put the Sharlayans to shame.

Fit didn't grab any weaponry, both because he didn't think he needed anything and because he promised that he wouldn't hurt the intruder too badly. Besides he had plenty of weapons on hand if he needed to defend himself. He had made most of them.

Finally he reached the room where the alarm had been set, the trap looking like it had gone off already. But the net used to contain any intruders was empty of a body and instead, crouched near the main body of the alarm system, was a person. Drawing closer to them, the fire of the furnace and a few other fixtures the only lights in the room. They were enough to tell Fit one things. This intruder was a Viera. Black rabbit ears with tips of dark blue were twitching as the intruder seemed to be trying to disassemble the alarm.

"What do you think you're doing?"

The intruder let out a yelp, moving to a standing position and drawing two daggers from their waists. This allowed Fit a better look at the would-be thief. He hated to admit to it, but his appearance gave him pause. Fit knew that Vieras, regardless of their genders, were beautiful, but the sight of this man's face still stunned Fit for a moment. He knew this was not the time to suddenly find himself enamored, both because this man was attempting to rob him and was also brandishing daggers. He was posed in a way that was all too familiar, not set to spring and attack, but more defensive. Ready to react to any attacks Fit might make. Knowing how rogues worked a little bit from his own history, he was surprised that he didn't try and use his skills to make a quick escape.

"You know that's a pretty impressive alarm system. I didn't even notice it until I was basically on top of it setting it off."

The words felt like he was sincerely complimenting the device. Fit felt a sense of pride, knowing that Ramón's hard work on it really paid off. He'd have to let him know later. But it hadn't worked completely, with this man still being free and not trapped. Some kind of rogue move? Or had he sliced through the ropes? Fit thought that they were thick enough to give some struggle to break out of.

"I'll pass on the praise."

"Oh it wasn't you? I thought it was."

The Viera started glancing about the area, relaxing only a smidge. His daggers were still out in front of him, ready for a fight. Fit didn't really want to fight if they didn't have to. After all, it didn't look like he got far enough to start robbing the place. But if he just let this stranger go, would he not try it again and with some place less guard? It didn't feel right to him.

"Who are you and why are you here?"

"I'm not going to give you my name. I think it's pretty clear why I'm here."

"It won't be hard to remember your face. We got many pretty guys like you around these parts."

"You think I'm pretty?" There was no reason for him to sound as pleased about that as he did. Fit almost took it back. But he didn't.

"I think all Vieras are."

His expression dropped to one of disappointment. Fit crossed his arms, trying to look menacing. He looked around for any nearby weapons. Maybe a fight would be a good idea. Just to make him scared. Still, this was a relatively tame break-in. It was strange too, considering that the Viera hadn't covered his face completely, giving Fit a good enough idea on his appearance. But like he said Vieras weren't common around these parts, so it wouldn't be difficult to point him out if he saw him later. If he stuck around after this failure. Then he did something Fit wasn't expecting. He sheathed his daggers and appraised Fit. He had no idea why he put away his weapons. Did he think Fit wasn't a threat? It annoyed him enough that he was willing to grab a sword right now.

"I heard you're a skilled blacksmith. Heard you're a great fighter too. Looking at all those muscles, I must say I believe both. You look.... strong."

Okay now Fit was getting a little confused. Was he being hit on all of a sudden? What was going on? He pinched himself just to be sure that he wasn't having the weirdest dream. "Why are you here?"

"I was going to steal some weapons, maybe some materials too. We are running out of them." Pac gestured around the place. "You have plenty here. I thought it would be pretty simple, but seems like you're prepared. Although. I could still get something."

"Don't even think about it." Fit finally did grab a sword now, one of the broadswords, hefting it up and making sure that this Viera was paying attention to the threat. He looked like he was about to swoon. This was too bizarre. "You heard I'm a great fighter and I'm willing to give you an up close show of it."

"Do you promise," he replied, almost too quiet that Fit thought he might have imagined it. He was hoping he did. "I think this might be time for me to head out then. I have no desire to get in trouble with the law. It's always too much hassle but, hey. Maybe we'll see each other again."

Finally, the Viera pulled something from a pouch and tossed it down. Fit pulled a switch, activating a second stage to the device. The net dropped as smoke filled the room. Something lashed out at the intruder and there was another yelp of surprised. There was a crash and the sound of metal hitting the floor. Fit rushed forward, seeing the Viera having stumbled to the ground. He was trying to scramble away, but one of his legs was caught. He went wide eyed at Fit, panicking at knowing he was about to be caught, but then he was pressing something around his hip. There was a hiss as something unlatched itself and Fit watched in surprise and horror as the leg slid free from his body. The Viera stuck out his tongue at him and with another motion, seemed to vanish. Fit stopped, still reeling from seeing him literally detach his leg. That was... that was not what he was expecting. Fit waited until the smoke cleared before lifting the leg from the ground. Just as he did, he heard creaks coming from behind him. Ramón had appeared, looking at his dad with confusion and curiosity. The Au Ra looked far more curious when he noticed the mechanical leg Fit was now holding.

"Did they leave that behind?!"

Fit wasn't sure how to respond to that. "Yeah. It looks like whoever it was, they left this behind when they escape."

"It looks impressive, very fine work." Ramón had come up to his side to examine it, but thankfully not touching it. He wasn't wrong. Like with Fit's arm, the details that went into this mechanical leg was far more advance than an average prosthetic. His would-be thief either knew someone who was an expert at the craft or had a very lucky steal. Either way it wasn't something that he felt they'd just abandoned without any backup plans. "Do you think they'll come back for it?"

"I'm sure. And next time, I think I'll get all my answers."
