Hinata pops the important question. If only Kageyama understood what he really meant.

Work Text:

Kageyama’s favorite time of the day was the morning. He liked to wake up when the sun was just about to rise, so he could have some time to make himself a small breakfast and get his running clothes on. Once the sun had peeked over the trees before his house, he’d set off on his journey around the block.

One lap turns into two, then two turns into three until he completes five laps around his small neighborhood. He doesn’t bother greeting any of the stray animals along the way, as most of them are just waking up as well. (They’ve never liked him anyway.)

On this particular morning, he takes only four laps. He hoped it wouldn’t offset his morning routine much, but Hinata said he wanted to have an important conversation. Usually, this would mean he has a new technique he wants to try, so Kageyama wasn’t paying it much mind as he went through the rest of his morning.

He ends up leaving his house around fifteen minutes earlier than usual. It won’t put him to school any later than normal, fortunately. This means he’ll have more than enough time to meet Hinata at the bottom of the hill he lives on.

“Hey, Kageyama! Over here!” He hears the familiar sound of bike wheels on the pavement behind him.

Hinata slows down only when he’s close to Kageyama, so much so that Kageyama worries he’ll run into him. “Careful, idiot.” He says as Hinata nearly tips over as he slides off his bike and walks over to stand beside him.

Uncharastically, like he’s hiding a big secret, Hinata is very visibly anxious. His tummy is rumbling so loudly that Kageyama can hear, and he’s having to constantly adjust his grip on the handles of his bike.

“I can hear the one brain cell in your head steaming, Hinata.” Hinata looks affronted at this, but Kageyama pays it no mind. “Just spit it out.”

“Easy for you to say; you have the manners of a toddler- and I live with Natsu.” Like an expert, Hinata dodges the swat he knew was coming.

Unfortunately, though, Kageyama isn’t satisfied with his failed attempt, so he keeps swatting until he makes it.

“Ok, I’ll tell you, just stop hitting me already!” Hinata says after a few minutes of nothing but dodging and failed attempts at kicking Kageyama’s ass.

After they start walking again, Hinata still stays eerily silent. Kageyama chooses to stay quiet, allowing Hinata the time to properly think through what he has to say. (Which isn’t something he usually does often.)

“So… I was thinking,” He licks his lips in thought, pausing for only a few seconds, yet perseveres to the end to say, “I think we should take the next step in our relationship.”

Kageyama pauses, stopping their walk. Hinata begins sputtering, trying to correct himself assuming he said something wrong, but Kageyama can’t hear a single word of it.

At first, he thought Hinata meant marriage. It’s a silly thought, though, as they’re both too young, in high school, and can’t marry in Japan anyway. So, reasonably, the next best thing is…

Oh.

No.

He can’t mean that.

Would Hinata seriously ask at the ass crack of dawn if Kageyama wanted to have sex?

He’d say no, but it’s Hinata in question. The same person who thought intercourse simply meant just walking into a class. He briefly shudders remembering the incident.

(“No, Yumei-sensei, I was running in the hallway because I wanted to do intercourse on time-”

“Shouyou Hinata I will not tolerate that type of despicable language in the classroom! Go to the dean's office right now.”)

So of course he’s asking him to have sex in the middle of the damn road this early in the day. How else would someone as ungraceful as him do it?

Kageyama scoffs, trying to act suave instead of how flustered he really is. “I mean, if you want to, we can. I’m just going to need some time to get the stuff we need.”

Hinata looks at him skeptically, “I guess. I already have the stuff at home-”

“You already bought it all?” Just how long was Hinata hoping they’d do it; or how long ago was he planning to pop the question?

Now, Hinata’s face starts to turn very red as well. “I- I guess I could use some flowers? I just kind of thought it’d be at my place, you know, since I asked.”

Kageyama starts to get a bit breathless from how much it seems Hinata has been expecting this. Of course, as a teenage boy, he’d given it lots of thought too, but volleyball kept his mind off of it most of the time. He never thought of actually having sex, let alone bringing Hinata flowers to do it with.

Oh no.

Is he expecting some type of candlelight, romantic lovemaking instead of just sex?

Kageyama, not wanting to disappoint his boyfriend by acting too much like a virgin, rubs the back of his neck in an attempt to soothe himself.

“Sure, I can bring some roses if that’s fine.” Yes, roses are safe and romantic.

Hinata slowly but surely begins to calm down the closer they get to the school, “Yeah, that should be fine.”

Fortunately, the front gate is just ahead. Kageyama waits patiently for Hinata to finish chaining his bike to the rack, fortunate for the small break. His only warning that Hinata’s done is his speedy run towards the clubroom.

All their worries are temporarily forgone for the sake of volleyball.

The bad part about practice is its inevitable end. Not only do they have to stop playing volleyball to do schoolwork instead (yuck), but now Kageyama has no distraction from the ongoing mess that is his relationship.

It’s on a whim that Kageyama decides to consult his old upperclassmen. They don’t talk every day, but they frequently update each other on how they’re doing. It’s often enough they speak to each other that he feels comfortable asking if they’re available during his lunch.

Normally, he’d eat with Hinata, Tsukishima, and Yamaguchi, but today he pretends he needs to have a meeting with a teacher concerning his grades. He pretends not to be offended that they buy the excuse without question.

When they call him, he’s seated himself outside on a lone picnic table by the front of the school.

“Kageyama! Hey!” Sugawara greets him warmly.

Daichi must be right beside him because he’s the next voice Kageyama hears. “How’s the team? I take it Ennoshita is leading you to victory?”

Kageyama doesn’t smile back, but there’s a definitive happiness in his voice as he responds. “Ennoshita-san is doing good; The new first years really like him.”

“I have no doubt about it!” Sugawara laughs, “Not to be too abrupt, but is there a reason you wanted to call? Alone, no doubt?”

Kageyama takes a deep breath in, thinking of how he can phrase this without sounding like a total loser.

“So, you guys know about Hinata and I,” He continued when he saw them nod, “Well, on our way to school this morning, he asked if I wanted to… uh… do it.”

Silence.

Silence is all he’s met with. He expected it, it's not like he expected them to take it as seriously as he feels, but it’s a little disconcerting how they’re seemingly numb.

It feels like years pass before someone speaks up, “Kageyama, by it, do you mean sex?” It was Sugawara.

As if he was just struck by lightning, Kageyama’s face turns a violent shade of red. “Y-yes.”

Still, there’s not even a peep. Not an indication they’ve heard him, but Kageyama knows better than to repeat himself. He has to let the shock set in just like he went through this morning.

“I’m not really sure what to say.” Daichi says slowly, like he’s goading a baby to say their first words, “Was there anything else he said?”

“He said I could bring flowers, that roses were ok.” Kageyama is glad they can’t see him, because he’s slowly knocking his head on the table repeatedly, wishing he would be sucked into a sinkhole.

Sugawara coughs, but instead of sounding awkward, it sounds like he’s holding his laughter in. Can Kageyama blame him? No. He’d want to laugh (or throw up) if someone told him the same thing.

“Well, do you, uh, understand how two men have se-”

Yes.” He scoffs, though it sounds more panicked than he’d like, “I know that much. I’m just not sure how to… to make sure he doesn’t get hurt.” He mumbles that last part, not having the courage to even lift his head off the table.

Fortunately, Sugawara seems to have noticed his change in demeanor over the phone. Without any hint of laughter or sly giggling, he comforts Kageyama.

“Listen, you love him, right?” Kageyama mumbles his answer, his face seeming to burn even more. “Then you should stop worrying. You’re not going to hurt him. You’re a gentle guy, Kageyama.”

Daichi chimes in, “I agree. Just make sure you keep it safe, and by that I mean to wrap up”

“Oh, that's the bell! Thank you Daichi-san, Sugawara-san!” Kageyama hangs up hastily, ignoring the loud cackles he hears on the other end of the phone.

He sighs, checking the time. There’s still ten minutes of lunch, that’s enough time to sneak a volleyball out of the gym closet and do some setting drills.

Hinata has felt anxious a lot of times in his life.

When Natsu was being born, on his first day of school, and before his first official volleyball game.

All of those seemed so miniscule in comparison to asking his boyfriend if he wanted to meet his family. He considers himself lucky that Kageyama can be as stupid as he is because he knows deep down that he’ll do his best to make a good impression on his family.

He’s just anxious about actually telling them. He doesn’t want to spring it on them unannounced, but he also thinks it's humiliating to be so formal about it.

“Hey! Want to meet someone I believe to be my significant life partner? Oh yeah, I’m gay by the way!”

Terrible. He has no tact. That train of thought leads to some spiraling because he knows how socially inept Kageyama can be. What if he somehow embarrasses them? His mother is the kindest woman he knows, he doesn’t think she has it in her heart to hate, but at the same time, if it’s for her kids, she’d do anything.

If she doesn’t think Kageyama is right for him, of course, she wouldn’t want them to continue dating.

It’s with all these fears swirling like a tornado in his mind all day that he texts his previous upperclassmen. He’s at home now, practice ended two hours ago and Kageyama has walked him to the base of his mountain. As expected, it was awkward as shit, but was still nice all the same. He enjoys every second he has to hold hands and be close to his boyfriend.

All he has to do now is keep sitting in his desk chair criss-cross-applesauce waiting for them to call.

It’s when he’s touching his lips softly, reminiscing how Kageyama’s lips felt on his own when the phone rings.

He picks it up swiftly, not able to contain his excitement.

“Daichi-san! Sugawara-san! Hey!” He belly flops onto his bed.

Daichi and Sugawara both laugh on the other end of the line. They’re as joyed to hear from Hinata as he is too.

“Hey! It feels like it’s been a long time, hasn’t it?” Sugawara sighs.

“Yeah, we’ve been really busy, but it’d be nice to find time to go out to dinner,” Daichi says solemnly, though he still sounds glad.

Hinata soon joins in on the laughter. “It does! We have a practice game against a smaller school that’s near Tokyo next week if you guys want to come to watch us play. There’s this new first  year, the one Tanaka-senpai told you about, who’s almost shorter than me…” It doesn’t take more than a few seconds before he’s sharing updates on the team.

He’s a talker, so it’s unsurprising that they spend the first ten minutes of the call just catching up. They talk about mundane topics ranging from school to new hobbies they’re taking up. (Sugawara has a newfound interest in knitting; having promised to knit a sweater for Hinata by Christmas time.)

“Ah, you said you had something to talk about, right?” Daichi begins. He’s always had a bit more of a connection with Hinata than the other third years.

Hinata’s a bit confused as to why they look like they’re trying not to laugh, but he shrugs it off. They were just having a lot of fun, anyway.

“Yeah! So, um…” He sits up in his bed, preparing himself for the serious change in subject. “This morning, I asked Kageyama to meet me outside earlier. I asked him if we could, you know, take the next step in our relationship.”

“And by that you mean?” Sugawara sounds comforting, like a warm glass of Tea on a sore throat.

Hinata takes a deep breath in, “I want him to meet my family.”

Now, he knows it might be a little shocking, but he certainly hadn’t found it as hilarious as they did. Like a Witch, or the old woman from Hansel and Gretel, Sugawara and Daichi are cackling. It goes on for way longer than Hinata agrees with, so he hangs up.

Maybe he’ll ask Tanaka and Nishinoya instead. They’re always willing to help their underclassmen out with their relationship problems.

-

“They’re so stupid,” Sugawara says through his giggles; he already has tears budding in his eyes from how hard he’s laughing.

Daichi, who's holding onto Sugawara’s shoulder in support, is also not faring well. “How long do you think it’ll take those fools to realize one’s talking about sex, and the other means a dinner with his parents?”

Sugawara has always been able to depend on them for volleyball, but that doesn’t make them the most intelligent pair. “Oh my, Daichi, I give it a week.”

Kageyama’s hesitant to ask his other upperclassmen. He knows they probably (most definitely) have better knowledge about this subject, whether it’s for girls or not. They’re also very enthusiastic about their escapades after a night of partying.

Because he assumes his other friends are lonely virgins rather than energetic partiers, he decides to confide in Tanaka and Noya’s expertise after practice.

He had approached them after morning practice ended if they wanted to grab some meat buns and have a talk. He made sure to keep it vague, so as to not provoke any suspicion, but he guesses that was the wrong choice.

He guesses so because he’s currently in the condom aisle of the Sakanoshita shop with both of them.

Fortunately, Coach Ukai had somewhere else to be this evening, but he was still humiliated to even be there, knowing Ukai’s poor mother could hear.

“So, Kageyama-kun, there are lots of variations of condoms here for you to use, but we can help you choose the right one!” Tanaka says excitedly. He sounds like he’s been waiting for someone to ask him for sex advice for a while.

“Uh, I’m fine with whatever gets the job done,” Kageyama replies unhelpfully.

Noya shakes his head, picking a box up to show him. “That’s not going to fly with us, my friend. We have to make sure you and Hinata see stars.” Please no. “Now, these are the normal ones. They fit tight and snug, so it still feels great!”

“When I asked for advice, I meant, like, telling me it; not buying me stuff.” Kageyama vainly tries to interject, hoping they’ll change their minds.

“No can do friend,” Tanaka repeats after Noya. Kageyama wishes a meteor would take him out like the dinosaurs. “You’re gonna have the time of your life.”

Noya nods, “Yeah! Let’s just get you this one. It’s the best brand, I swear by it! After all, I haven’t had any surprise babies coming my way!”

“Ah, can you imagine a mini-Nishinoya?” Sighing wistfully, Tanaka walks in between Kageyama and Noya to put both his arms around their shoulders. “Or, better yet, multiple mini-Nishinoya's.”

Noya laughs heartily, but Kageyama finds nothing about his newfound sense of doom funny. He wiggles himself out of Tanaka’s tight embrace and snatches the box out of Noya’s hands. He hides his arms around it, trying not to let anyone who might be around catch a peek.

Kageyama marches right through them with his eyes set on the checkout counter. “Ok, now that we have this, I need to get home to do some, uh, homework-” Kageyama’s interrupted by a hand on the scruff of his jacket pulling him backward.

“You can’t get away that easily,” Tanaka chuckles. It reminds him of an alligator licking its lips before it pounces on its prey. “Since you’re doing the devil’s tango with another man, you’re gonna need an aid.”

“A what?” Now, at this, Kageyama’s stupefied.

Noya leads them a few feet over to the… lube. He takes a minute to look for the right bottle and holds it up, “Lube is like jelly. Not sticky, but watery enough to make sure you slide in nice and-”

He isn’t sure what takes over him, but he does know that all he sees is the color red as he lunges to take the lube out of Noya’s hands.

“Great! Thanks! Goodbye!” Kageyama practically yells. He’s sure Ukai’s poor mother is very concerned behind the counter, based on the evident worry on her face as Kageyama slams his items down.

It’s a wordless exchange, fearful glances aside. He ignores Tanaka and Noya’s laughter coming up behind him while his items are bagged.

Kageyama runs as fast as he can out of the store until Tanaka and Noya each clap a hand on his shoulders, standing on either side of him.

“Don’t worry! You’ll do great!” Noya cheerfully jumps up and down.

Tanaka ruffles his hair. “I have faith in you, young sir. If you ever need any more advice-”

“No thanks!”

Hinata tries not to think of the anxiety that’s been slowly rising in his tummy like a flood.

Kageyama’s going to meet his family in two days and he doesn't know how to act about it. He feels like he should brief Kageyama a bit, but he isn't sure what he’d even say. He knows everything there is about his mom and little sister, so it’s hard to come up with fun facts Kageyama could use to help himself just in case.

He tried to ask Tsukishima about it, but of course, that yielded no good results. He’s ashamed he even tried.

While Hinata doesn’t think asking Tanaka and Noya is the best choice (it’s certainly not his first),  he knows that deep down they can help him.

All he has to do is call them his smart, amazing, talented, superior, favorite upperclassmen, then they’re in the palm of his hand.

He does just that during lunch.

“Hey, Tanaka, Noya, can I talk to you guys outside for a minute?” Hinata says shyly. He believes he’s doing a good job at holding himself together in front of the scary third years they’re friends with.

Surprisingly, they seem to give each other a look before they accept his invitation. They’re both still overly energetic, but it’s not like Hinata notices. They’re usually a trio of chaos, after all.

Hinata ignores their friends snickering behind them, and walks them to the front of the gym. Kageyama has extra lessons with their English teacher today, so it’s fortunately an empty space.

“Um, I just wanted to ask you guys for some advice about Kageyama-” He starts, but he’s interrupted by Noya jumping in excitement.

“Hell yeah, buddy!” Noya says. “Kageyama also asked us about it. You’re in for a good time!”

Hinata laughs awkwardly, looking to see if Tanaka has any clue as to what he’s talking about.

Tanaka is as struck as Noya is. “I can’t believe you guys trust us this much.” He feigns a tear running down his face.

Hinata takes it all in stride. “Of course we do! You’re our favorite upperclassmen!”

Noya falls back dramatically to lean on Tanaka for support. “Did you hear that, bro?”

“Oh, I heard it clearly, brother.”

Like a switch was flipped, the mood turns serious. Tanaka and Noya both cross their arms over their chests and look at Hinata as if he’s about to find out he’s the heir of an important prophecy.

Tanaka begins. “Listen closely, pupil. We believe we taught Kageyama well. He’s prepared to take the torch, and give you a great time.”

“But what you need to know is, you’ll be ok. Kageyama’s a great guy; he’ll treat you right. He’s only worried because he doesn’t want to hurt you.” He doesn’t think he’s ever heard Noya sound this serious. As scary as it is, it’s also comforting to know that they’ve genuinely had his back.

Hinata smiles so hard his cheeks hurt. He needed to hear that. “You guys are right. I don’t know why I was so worried like I was. I kind of forgot that he’d be worried too, since it is my family he’s meeting.”

Noya looks confused. He uncrosses his arms to put them at his sides. “Sure, sure. Just make sure they don’t overhear anything they don’t want to hear.”

“Of course,” Hinata nods. “They’re going to love him. Wow, I can’t thank you guys enough! You’re the best upperclassman I’ve ever had!”

All thoughts of confusion are gone at Hinata’s earnest praise. Tanaka and Noya revel in it royally, basking in the positive attention they rarely receive.

Hinata takes a deep breath as he walks back to class. He sees Kageyama coming back from the classroom their English teacher had been in, and he smiles at him.

Kageyama raises an eyebrow at him. “You ok?”

“I am.”

Friday is a day full of fear.

Kageyama has been psyching himself up all week for this moment. He has the condoms and lube in an old tote bag from his sister and is shoved to the bottom of his gym bag.

He consulted the abyss that is Reddit and Quora for some tips. Make sure to use lube even during preparation, go at the pace Hinata sets, and give lots of kisses.

He’s been training consistently enough at this point to be able to not let his nervousness affect his gameplay during their morning and afternoon practice times.

Unfortunately, socially, he’s still pretty inadequate. He’s quieter than usual during lunch and break times, but Hinata fortunately understands where his worries are coming from, and remains by his side. He doesn’t push Kageyama to talk, preferring to hold his hand or wrap an arm around his back.

Kageyama accepts his gentle touches with grace, and before he knows it, they’re walking from school to Hinata’s house. Luck was on his side today, as it had been a pretty mundane day for the most part. This leaves him with one thing to worry about.

They’re halfway through their walk in silence when Hinata speaks up. “Hey, I know you’re nervous, but there’s nothing to be nervous about.” He turns his head to give Kageyama a big, cheesy grin. “I love you, Tobio. Let’s not start this off scared.”

Kageyama never realized the full effect Hinata had on him until he was surprised by this. “Thank you,” Hinata says nothing back, just reaching over to grab his hand and squeeze it in support.

They get to Hinata’s house fairly quickly after that. The only difference is that the weight in Kageyama’s stomach has been quietly disappearing.

“Just so you know, my mom will be back from Natsu’s school meeting in thirty minutes,” Hinata says once they’re done taking their shoes off in the mudroom.

Kageyama freezes. “Oh- uh, did you want to wait then?”

Hinata freezes too. The familiar feeling of confusion rose in his chest. “What do you mean? Why would we wait?”

“I mean, I thought you’d want to take it slow.” Kageyama starts rubbing the back of his neck. He ignores how he feels his face begin to glow a bright red. “We can try thirty minutes, but I can’t promise I’ll…  you know, finish by then.” He looks away, unwilling to meet his boyfriend's eyes.

Hinata’s more than confused by this point. “Are you preparing something? I’m not sure we have time to run to the store for supplies.”

“I already have everything; it’s in my gym bag.” Wow, has that vase always been there? The paint on the walls is looking rather lovely this evening, Kageyama thinks.

“Oh, awesome! So, wanna show me what you have in the living room?” Hinata starts heading there anyway.

Kageyama stuttered at his heels, lightly grabbing Hinata’s shoulder to turn him around before they made it there. “Are you sure? Your mom and sister might get back sooner, so maybe we should go to the bedroom before we start.”

Hinata’s confusion is starting to morph into concern now. “Tobio, that’s really weird. My family won’t want to meet you in my room.”

“Which is why I asked if you wanted to wait until after they got here.” Kageyama nods. He’s not really understanding what Hinata’s getting at, but it’s bringing the rock of dread back into his belly. “I thought our first time should be in bed at least.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Tobio? First time for what?

“Sex you idiot! I don’t want to be caught having sex for the first time on your couch-”

“I wasn’t talking about sex, I was talking about you meeting my family for dinner tonight!” Hinata yells.

Stunned, all Kageyama can do is stand there. He thinks back to that morning when Hinata asked him to take the next step in their relationship. Marriage wasn’t as far off now, was it?

This can’t be happening.

All this damned week, Hinata was talking about meeting his family?

Kageyama had humiliated himself in front of his upperclassmen for nothing?

“Tobio… this entire week…”

Kageyama is once again unable to meet Hinata’s strong gaze. “You said you wanted to take the next step in our relationship. I thought you wanted to do ‘it.’”

It’s quiet for a few beats. Hinata breaks the silence with his laughter.

It’s not unkind laughter, but it’s the type of laughter someone does when they’ve just lost their car keys down a drain, or after they’ve dropped their phone in the toilet.

“We’re so stupid.” He laughs. He can’t stop, eventually having to hunch over to lean on his knees.

It’s contagious, too. Kageyama is smiling softly and shaking his head. This has got to be a new low for them.

“Well, I guess we get to experience two milestones tonight, huh?” Hinata punches his shoulder gently when he’s finally gotten his wits about him. “You freak.”

“Who the hell asks to meet someone’s parents like that anyway, dumbass?” Kageyama puts Hinata in a headlock, pretending not to feel Hinata slapping his back and arms.

“Normal people, Idiot-yama! If you were that horny you should’ve just said so!”

The front door opens, and in comes a stampede only a toddler can create followed by the steps of a tired mother.

Well shit.
