Work Text:
It was Buck’s fault.
Well Chris was the one asking but he’s the adult, he needs to learn how to say no to Christopher, even when he promises to get all his summer reading done just so they can have a couple of scoops of ice cream together. He said he wants to make the most of summer while it’s still here and... how can Buck possibly resist? So now, Eddie is walking through the front door of their shared home, after a 24-hour shift and is met with a kid on a sugar rush and Buck regretting his life’s decisions.
Eddie can’t do anything but sigh and look to his boyfriend. “He tell you he just wants to make the most out of summer and doesn’t wanna miss anything?”
“Yup...” Buck says, half asleep, barely opening his eyes to look at him.
“Yup.” Eddie mutters.

“You know he’s been using that trick since we moved here? The first summer we lived here, he said that L.A was so different from Texas, and everything was changing but it was still summer, and it was still special. That night he convinced me to give three bowls of ice cream and crashed so hard!” Eddie laughs, looking out the window fondly. Somehow, they managed to wrangle Christopher to bed and left him with a scolding before saying goodnight. Even if Buck had technically caused the whole situation, Eddie was still grateful he was there. Washing dirty, ice cream filled dishes is a lot better when you’ve got the love of your life next to you, helping like he does with everything. Not only was doing chores easier with Buck around but everything was. Since he moved in after the shooting and after they finally confessed to each other, Buck has been parenting Chris, taking him wherever he wants to go, helping with homework and even punishing him every so often.
They’ve definitely still got a good cop, bad cop situation going on, but Buck has been getting better with guiding Chris and taking initiative when he does something wrong. Eddie loves it. He loves how genuine Buck is to Chris and how he treats him like his own, how he’ll talk about him when he meets someone new and always ask how his day was first rather than asking Eddie or talking about his own. He loves how Buck is his dad in every sense of the word. He’s so proud of him for just immediately stepping in when Eddie can’t and when he can.
“I’m really proud of you.” Eddie says, smiling at Buck.
Buck looks at him before turning his attention back to the dishes. “For what? Making both you and Chris stay up much longer than needed?” Buck scoffs in response. He has long sense forgotten about the dishes and is now just looking at them, leaning on the sink, avoiding Eddie’s gaze. “I should’ve known better, sorry...” He sighs.
“I’m proud of you because-” Eddie snakes an arm around Buck’s waist. “Because you’re doing really well. You just made that kids day. I know you know that we shouldn’t be making that into a daily occurrence but the only thing he is gonna remember is how he had so much ice cream for no reason, thanks to his Buck.” “Well, he did say he’d get all his reading done.” Buck points. “You know he’s not gonna do that.” “I know he’s not gonna do that. Doesn’t mean I won’t be checking in though, making sure he’s at least trying to.” Eddie kisses his neck, now fully cuddled up to him. “And that’s what makes you a good dad Evan.” Buck looks directly at Eddie brown eyes, a little shocked by being called his first name. “You didn’t know what he was doing so you indulged him, made him happy. Lord knows I should be doing that more often.” He leans back against the kitchen counter before Buck’s hands reach his face. “Woah, hey you’re a damn good father too. He was a great kid way before I ever came along because of you.” Eddie leans into the touch and smiles softly. “Thank you.” He whispers despite how unneeded those words are while pressing their foreheads together before sharing a small, gentle kiss, only being given for comfort and love.
“Say... do we still have any ice cream?”

Eddie hums against Buck’s chest. “We should do this more often-” Eddie says before his ice cream drips on him. “Should we?” Buck smirks before licking his own ice cream, desperate not to be like his boyfriend. Eddie looks back to him, trying to be annoyed but failing horribly. “Let me try some of yours.” He says with a cock of his head. Before even getting answer, Eddie is already leaning over, knowing that Buck would never say no to him... At least he thought he wouldn’t, but Buck is moving his arm away to make sure he doesn't even get a single lick. “No way, you’re not making an even bigger mess with my ice cream. Plus, its pist-” He’s quickly cut off my Eddies mouth on his, licking inside his mouth, tongue fighting with his. The kiss is done as fast as its started with Eddie pulling away, twisting his face in disgust. “Aw man, what flavor is that?” Buck simply looks at Eddies grimacing face with disappointment before replying to him. “Pistachio. Pepa gave it to us the last time I went over to pick Christopher up. I cannot believe you just did that Eds.” “Yea it was not worth it, God I hate pistachio.” “Yea, I know, that’s why I was trying to make sure you didn’t have any.” Buck deadpans before Eddie is settled against him again, immediately easing up.
“Hey, um, thanks for saying that earlier. I think I needed to hear it whether I wanted to or not. I just really do not wanna mess Chris up or anything and, obviously I’m super proud of you too. He really loves you and even wanted to stay up till you came home, which I of course tried to shoot down but-” “Buck.” Eddie says, barely above a whisper, gripping the arm Buck’s had around him this entire time. He begins rubbing his hand up and down Buck’s arm, trying to sooth and reassure him.
“I meant it Buck.”
“I meant it too.”
Eddie turns his head to completely face Buck. He plants a genuine kiss on Bucks lips, one without any intentions besides showing how much he loves him.
“I love you.”
“I love you.” Buck whispers back, nuzzling his nose with Eddie’s.
A comfortable silence falls between them, content with feeling warm from one another's presence despite the frozen treats they share, fully aware of the love they share.
