Chapter Text

As usual, when the entire group has free time, they all gather together at the Arias-Danvers-Sawyer household. The three adults are preparing lunch in the kitchen while the little ones are close by in the living room watching television and colouring.

Alex passes the peeler to Sam so she can peel the carrots to chop up for the side salad, “Ok so she's been talking about this coffee maker she's been wanting to put in her lab. She says it's cool because it has a setting for iced coffee, but it's like, what…. seven hundred bucks. She says she can't justify spending so much on a damn coffee maker. Soooo since it's almost Mother's Day, I think we should get it”

Kara snorts while cutting up fruit to put in the fruit salad. “Eliza is gonna retire having millions and she is scared to buy herself a coffee maker; she makes seven hundred dollars in less than an hour. I find it funny,” Kara points the peeler at her sister, “I am NOT splitting the cost for that coffee maker.” Standing tall with pursed lips.

Alex pouts, “It's a lot of money for us yeah, but come on Kar.” The director whines, “Mom has been talking about it for months!”

Kara rolls her eyes and shoves a large piece of melon in her mouth. “Fine,” the hero mumbles, “I can do 30/70 on the cost, I already got her six-month subscription on this new science journal thing, I know she hasn't subbed to yet.”

Alex looks at her sister in shock, “Hello?! I brought that journal up and asked if you thought it was a good idea and you said it was lame!!”

Kara laughs heartily, “Sorry Al, it was a great idea for me to steal.” Alex throws a trashed piece of carrot at the girl, which she promptly catches with her mouth.

In the living room, wrapped up in a blanket with only a pull-up and a t-shirt on underneath, Maggie has been listening, interested in the conversation her mommy’s and auntie were having. She was put in time out earlier because she refused to put on a pull-up. Which isn't exactly out of character for the girl. But she was feeling bigger in age, and wearing a pull-up out of baby/toddler space was too embarrassing an ordeal. But nap time came around, and a wet bed and a huge tantrum because of it ensued. They didn't punish her because she wet the bed; they punished her because she lied about it. She got up earlier than usual, found she was wet, stuffed the bed sheets into their closet and poured soap on it, thinking that'll make it clean and remove the faint smell.

What the girl didn't account for was the clothes she was still wearing. When she made it out of the room, they all immediately knew, which led to them questioning the girl. Maggie, not wanting to be found out so soon, opted to lie, and lie, and lie until she disintegrated her brain trying to keep up with her thoughts. Thus, an early (non-toy-filled) bath, a tantrum, and then a ten-minute time out.

This all happened an hour ago and Maggie was a bit bitter. She hasn't spoken a word to either Mommy’s, or even her playmate Lena. The CEO isn't too hurt by it, though, being little today, a bit still new to her, she doesn't talk much during activities such as these.

Mothers day? Mm, sounds fun, but what is Mommy’s day?

“Mommy?” the little says, not looking over to Sam, trying to feign indifference while colouring her dragon.

Sam's eye eyebrows quirk up, not thinking that the silent treatment would last this shortly. Sam was the one to punish the girl, always willing to be the “bad guy” cause Alex hates having an upset little girl. Sometimes it annoys Sam that she always has to be the one in the dog house but she always gets extra cuddles and kisses at the end of days like today.

Sam starts to take out the bread and vegan sandwich meat, along with condiments to put in the sandwiches, “Yes Bun?”

The little picks up the yellow crayon from Lena’s side, the other girl a tad bit annoyed cause that was the one she wanted to use right now, but she doesn't say anything. “What is Mommy's Day?” She uses the yellow crayon to colour on the teeth of the dragon. “Is it like your birthday?” She finally looks up at Sam.

Sam smiles at the girl, “You're so smart Bunny, I guess it kinda is like a birthday. It's a day we celebrate Mommy’s because we love them and are thankful they take care of us and love us back.

Maggie face crinkles, never having celebrated that day before, “Oh….” She turns back to colour. I love my Mommy’s, so that means I have to celebrate Mommy’s day. I gotta get 'em something, make' em something!

The little stops colouring, not knowing when Mommy’s day actually is, “Mama!”

Alex startles a bit, spilling a bit of juice on her shirt, Kara cackling beside her. “Yes Bug?” She says, trying to dry the juice up from the counter.

“When’s Mommy’s day?” Alex comes over with a wet cloth to wipe at her sticky shirt and a bowl of fruit to hold the girls over till lunch is all finished.

“Well,” Alex looks at her watch's calendar, “It’s on Thursday, so in four days, love.” She puts the bowl down between the girls, and Lena immediately takes a piece with her non-colouring hand.

Maggie shakes her head affirmatively, indicating she has gotten the answer she needs. The girl has never celebrated this day with them before; she hasn't even celebrated it when she was with Mami and Papi before. She vaguely remembers talks about this day but she had other things to worry about at home.

Lena might look like she wasn't paying attention, but she was. Maggie cried a lot earlier today, and that did not do Lena any good. She wasn't scared, everything was just so loud, but she wasn't the one who was in trouble, and she didn't wanna make things worse. She knows she can talk to Kara, could have gone into another room for some space and for some quiet, but she couldn't. She felt rooted in her spot, she didn’t wanna be seen or heard.

Lena has never celebrated Mother's Day. Well, not with the Luthors. That day they would take pictures of gifts with Lillian that she bought herself so it can be posted in some millionaire magazine to help them seem family-oriented and civil. Nothing they ever did was real.

Lena does remember her last mothers day with her biological mother. That day she and her aunt surprised her mom with cupcakes covered in green frosting and pink sprinkles. Lena learned how to spell mother that day. She remembers her mother's happy tears and the amount of warm kisses she had on her cheek. Her cheeks hurt by the time it was bedtime because of the laughter and smiles that went on for hours on end. That day was one of the best days of her life, and it's all bittersweet thinking about it because the more she grows, the more she forgets what her mother looks like, what she smells like, what she talks like. But one thing Lena knows she will never forget is how she felt being with her, and she’ll try chasing that feeling for the rest of her life.

Lena is startled out of her thought with a piece of paper being slid to her. It’s wrinkled and folded with crude writing in crayon on the outside and inside.

“It's a note” whispers her colouring partner, “Open please Lee.” She inspects it more but opens it at the insistence of the other girl.

Mommy’s day plan! <3 :) :p

  • brekfist in bed
  • cookies
  • cards
  • hug an kises!!

Lena looks up at the girl with a small smile on her face and nods her head in confirmation. Lena never celebrated Mother's Day before, but she thinks Kara deserves to feel special this day, with all the times Kara has taken care of her; they have been through a lot, it's only right to give Kara the love she shows her little girl.

Maggie takes the note back and puts it inside her shirt when the other three bring them their lunch.

Kara sets down the plates and switches the TV to something they all might wanna watch. She sees Maggie put something in her shirt and Lena holding in a laugh while Maggie's stares up at her trying to exude innocence.

Kara raises her left brow, “What have you two gotten up to huh?”

They both immediately answer, “Nothin!”

Sam and Alex laugh at their not-so-convincing responses but lets it go for now.

Sam bends down discreetly next to the girl, patting her bottom to check if she is wet. Satisfied that she is dry, she unclips the girl's pacifier from her shirt and sets a cloth on the girl's lap so as to minimise the mess and clean up. Kara does the same thing for Lena sans a diaper check

She motions to the food, “Alright babies, eat up so we can head for a walk later, you might get to feed some ducks.”

The small family is back home after about three hours out at the park feeding what seemed to be very hungry ducks. At the start of the feeding, it was about maybe five ducks gathered around each girl and it was all civil until one of them quacked a bit too loud. Then a swarm of them came flying in, scaring Lena a bit, but she will never admit it. After Kara has to scare the ducks off from nipping at the girls hands they walk around, stopping to skip rocks and take pictures of the interesting birds in the area.

They enter their home still licking on mostly melted sherbert, the girl's hands dripping with the fruity goodness. The rest of the day goes by without a hitch. The girls beg them to have a sleepover, and it doesn't take any of them long to give in. Lena has been the most talkative today out of all her little space days, and Kara would like that to last as long as possible.

They eat dinner, a simple broccoli cheddar soup meal that warms everyone up. They all brush their teeth while Kara and Lena have a bath to get ready to make their customary sleepover fort and movie. It's Sam's turn to pick, and she has elected for The Little Rascals, an absolute classic.

It's rare that the adults fall asleep sooner than the littles, rare as in, it never happens, at least one of them, most of the time it's Sam, who is awake to pull blankets of bodies and to turn off the lights and TV. This time, she was the first to be knocked out. Kara, then Alex, are right behind her in dreamland.

The movie is about ten minutes out until the credits start to roll, and each of the littles are droopy droopy-eyed. But this was their plan. Stay awake as long as possible and wait out the Mommy’s. Maggie slowly gets up and stretches a little bit. There is a slight pop of her shoulder, her pacifier tugged in her mouth lightly before she lets it fall to the floor. She was snuggled close to Lena with Alex and Sam on her right side, while Kara was next to Lena on her left. Both girls check to see if their Mamas are awake.

“She sleep Lee?” Maggie whispers raspily, she covers her mouth, and she lets out a big yawn.

Lena nods her head, “Mm.”

Both girls get up from their spots slowly and make it into the master bedroom. The crinkle of Maggie's pull-up is left in their wake as they make it farther from the den. The sound is a bit embarrassing because of how noticeable it is at this time, but she can't focus on that right now, she has a mission to enact.

Lena closes the door gently, and they both sit on the floor pulling out crayons, scissors, glue, glitter, and coloured paper.

It takes them a while, way past the ending of the movie, but with extra droopy eyes and a million yawns later, each girl has a card made for their Mama’s. Maggie had a bit of extra work to do, having to create two separate cards that fully encapsulated Maggie's love and admiration for the two in different ways. Maggie's is a bit messier as well, hers being the disorganised and less patient of the two. She has glitter everywhere on Alex's card, cut out 3D hearts and stars and swirls everywhere on the inside and outside of the card. Sam's card is adorned with cutouts of coloured paper sprinkled all over Sam's in lieu of glitter because she knows how much her Mommy hates sparkly glitter.

They set the items to dry perfectly under the guest room bed, and they try to clean up the room as best as possible. They know they would have to be dry but the time Mother's Day morning comes around in four days.

They look at their handiwork and they can't help but to smile. But when they eye the floor, they both internally slap themselves.

Lena looks at the floor, rubbing her foot along the glitter particles. “Maybe if we tape our hands and pat the floor, it'll come off?”

Maggie groans, “That sounds like a lot uh work Lee.” Maggie puts her hands on her face and rubs at her eyes, unknowingly getting glitter on her.

Lena shrugs her shoulders, “Well we gotta get it up somehow or the surprise is ruined!” She whispers.

“Ok Ok, where the tape?” Maggie scans the room for tape.

Lena tosses her a roll, and she takes a roll herself. The tape is loud, and they pray to Rao that the door between the rooms is enough to mask the sounds.

It's another ten minutes of hard work on their hands and knees trying to get most of the glitter up. They throw away what is used and wash their hands as best as possible and scurry back to bed, bumping into the one once or twice because their eyes blink close longer than open now with it being almost three in the morning.

Lena lifts up her Mommy's arm so she cuddles up to her, with a little shift, Kara sinks deeper into her girl, inhaling the all too familiar scent that she loves so much. In no time, they both settle, and the brunette is sleeping soundly.

It takes Maggie a little while longer to settle. She has to scoot herself in between two people, both of them muscly and heavy to maneuver, Maggie almost gives up and flops on top of them both. Alex senses something, call it mother intuition, she opens up her arms and Maggie dives into them softly. Alex wraps her arms around the girl, still in her sleep dazed mind, she pats the girl's bottom to check if it's dry and once she is satisfied she kisses Maggie's forehead and starts to snore away again. That makes Maggie giggle and she snuggles into Alex's neck. She tries and finally succeeds in dragging Sam's arms over herself and Alex. The three of them settle, breathing in sync.

The last thing on Maggie's mind is that she can't wait for Mother's Day.
