What If Things Were Different

Summary:

“Do you ever wonder what life would be like for us if we met under different circumstances?” Charles said, sitting up breaking the silence. “Like do you reckon we would still be friends if we met while we were both still alive,”

Charles contemplates his friendship with Edwin and reconsiders what Edwin said while they were escaping hell

Notes:

my personal head cannon is that ghosts can feel each others touch. also I tried to write British slang mostly from the 80s but I am neither British nor was born in the 80s so I tried my best.

Work Text:

Edwin and Charles were on the leather sofa in their office, unceremoniously piled on top of each other. Edwin was reading a book about London's cryptids while Charles laid with his head in Edwin's lap so while he read he could play with the curls of Charles's hair. They sat in silence for a few ticks before,
“Do you ever wonder what life would be like for us if we met under different circumstances?” Charles said, sitting up breaking the silence. “Like do you reckon we would still be friends if we met while we were both still alive,” Edwin looked up from his book with the face he usually put on when thinking about a particularly hard case. “I would like to believe so, but it's hard to say since you made the decision to stay with me because you thought it was ‘aces’ that I escaped from hell. I'm not sure if you would have liked me all that much if we met while we were still alive.”
“That's not true Edwin it made you extra cool but, I liked you because you were nice to me. I bet if we met otherwise I would want to be friends with you,” Charles assured, leaning his head onto the shoulder of the other boy.
“I appreciate the reassurance but I will remind you that i'm not the best with people, this was the first thing that i ever told you when you wanted to stay with me,” Edwin paused pensively “However, I am glad that you did decide to stay with me all this time.” setting his head on top of charles’s head and reaching his arm around charles’s shoulder.
They sat together in this manner for a while until Charles broke the silence again. “I thought about what you said before we escaped hell…”
“Honestly just forget I said anything, I was scared that I would never get another chance to tell you,” Edwin choked out afraid that charles was going to ridicule him.
“ Edwin, I love you too.” Charles confessed “I didn't realise that was what I was feeling until you confessed but, I feel the same way Edwin,'' Edwin adjusted himself on the sofa in order to look Charles in the eyes. "You don't have to lie to me to make me feel better charles.”
“I'm not lying…'' Charles tried but remembering that talking about feelings was never his strong suit. He let his impulsiveness take over, leaning in for a kiss. Edwin realised that Charles was telling the truth about his feelings and closed the remaining distance between them.
