You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter; You are the best thing that's ever been mine

Summary:

Tumblr prompt

I have read EVERY SINGE ONE of your Chenford posts before I finally got up the courage to send you a prompt. I can't believe no one has asked you about this one yet! I'd love to read a scene with Lucy fighting with her parents and him coming to comfort or defend her. I mean the lyrics "fell in love with a careless man's careful daughter" are just perfect for Chenford.

Work Text:

“We got more RSVP’s.” Tim says looking over at Lucy who is scrolling through her phone. She pauses and crawls over to him where is on the sofa looking at the laptop. She sees a plethora of yes’s as Tim scrolls through them.

“How many people are coming so far?” She asks laying her head on his shoulder. Tim scrolls back up and looks at the total.

“150.” He says. “I didn’t even know we knew that many people.” Lucy laughs and then chews on her bottom lip.

“Did my parents respond?” She asks. She feels Tim pause and feels his eyes on her. “I mean it doesn’t matter—”

“It does matter Luce. They are your parents and you are getting married. They should be there.” Tim says. He scrolls through the list and pauses when it gets to Vanessa and Patrick Chen. Her heart thumps in her chest.

No.

She sucks in a breath, she really wasn’t surprised that they had said no. She hadn’t talked to them in years, and they certainly wouldn’t approve of Tim no matter how happy he made her. But she had a little bit of hope left, a little bit of hope that they would at least show up for her wedding.

“Well that’s not surprising.” She mutters. Tim hums softly and just presses a kiss to the top of her head.

“They are missing out.” Tim mumbles. “You are amazing Lucy, they have no idea what they are missing.”

Lucy sniffs and wipes the tears from her eyes. She had promised herself she wouldn’t cry again because of her parents. If they didn’t want her in their lives—and they clearly didn’t then she would just move on.

“It’s fine.” She says smiling up at him. “We don’t need them at our wedding anyway.” Tim gives her a soft smile and brushes some hair out of her face.

“You are right.” He says gently. “But that doesn’t mean they should be treating you this way. You deserve the best Lucy. You deserve better from them.”

She sighs and she knows Tim is just trying to be supportive but she really does want to let her parents go. They hadn’t shown her support or made an effort, why would she?

“I know.” She says and lifts her head up. “But I truly just need to let it go. They aren’t making the effort why should I?”

Tim sighs and kisses her softly on the lips. “Okay baby. I will let it go.” He says. He runs his hand through her hair, his fingers tangling in it. “I love you.”

She smiles and pulls him in for another kiss. “I love you too Tim. And just think we have 150 people who do care about us. I’d say we are pretty lucky.” Tim nods and gathers her against his side.

“Very lucky.” He mutters. “Very lucky indeed.”

Tim watches as Lucy scans the items for their wedding registry. She scans plates, cups, blankets and anything else they don’t need.

“Baby, we have silverware.” He says as she scans a set of knives and forks. “And why the hell do we need a lamp?”

Lucy tosses him an amused glance. “It’s not like we will be getting all of this Tim. And I want a lamp next to my side of the bed. Yours has all the light.”

“Fine.” He says. “Keep the lamp but—” He watches as she scans a bean bag they certainly didn’t need.

“Now I think you are just scanning random ass items to get under my skin.” He says. She shoots him another look but this time she’s grinning. “Why didn’t we do this online?”

Lucy shrugs her shoulders, “This is way more fun.” She says. “I like to actually see the items.”

Fair enough.

Tim walks behind Lucy, watching her closely as she walks down the aisle. Their wedding was still two months away but it felt like they were doing something for it every single day. Whether it was RSVP’s, picking out items for the registry, making payments. It was to say the least exhausting.

But he knows it will all be worth it because at the end of all this—they were getting married. And that’s all that mattered to him.

“Lucy, I swear to god I will take over this if you don’t stop scanning random items.” Tim warns. Lucy turns back to him, and stops as he approaches. She puts her arms around his neck and kisses him.

“Okay.” She says. “But most of these things are serious.” Tim just shakes his head pressing a kiss against her forehead.

“Whatever you say—”

“Lucy?” Tim freezes at the same time Lucy does as she slowly turns in his arms. Tim sees a woman who looks like she has a permanent scowl on her face staring at them. Tim doesn’t let Lucy go, he’s not sure he would be able to.

“Mom.” Lucy says and he can tell she’s trying to keep her voice steady. “I—”

Vanessa Chen stared at them, and there’s a heavy silence between them.

“What are you doing Lucy?” Vanessa asks. Her sharp eyes go to Tim and they stay there.

“I’m registering stuff for my wedding registry.” Lucy says. Vanessa turns up her nose a little.

“Looks like you are being inappropriate in a Target aisle.” She says. Lucy shoulders fall down a little and Tim rubs her side.

“Mom this is my fiancé Tim.” She says gesturing to Tim behind her. Vanessa doesn’t let her eyes leave Tim’s face.

“Oh.” Vanessa says. “I see you are still making bad choices. I see he’s taken over.”  Tim feels Lucy deflate even more and he feels a rush of anger.

“I’m not making bad choices mom.” She says cooly. “This is my life. Tim makes me happy and whether you like it or not we are getting married. I know you aren’t coming to the wedding but it’s still happening.”

Vanessa blinks at her, “I’m not coming because I don’t approve of this—relationship.” Vanessa says. “And I don’t approve of your choices.”

“You don’t even know him.” Lucy snaps. “You made it very clear you don’t care to know him.”

Vanessa continues to stare at her. “You cut us off Lucy. You made that decision.” Vanessa says. Lucy huffs out an annoyed breath and he can tell she’s at a loss for words now. Her mother would never own up that this was brought on by her.

“Lucy reached out to you several times.” Tim says. “When we got engaged and she even sent you wedding invitations. You are the one that didn’t reach out. You are the one that basically cut her off because you don’t approve of her choices. She is amazing, and she deserves so much better from you.” Lucy reaches behind him and squeezes his hand.

Vanessa opens her mouth but Tim cuts her off. “You are missing out on her life  because you are too concerned with your views.” He says tersely. “Your daughter is the most amazing, incredible person I have ever met and it’s a honor to be in her life.”

Tim hears Lucy sniff and he pulls her forward so she’s tucked into his side, she doesn’t look at Vanessa just looks up at him her eyes wet with tears.

“Well.” Vanessa says but she doesn’t sound as confident as before. “You made your decision. And I made mine. Have a good life Lucy.”

“I will.” She says. “Because I have people who love and support me no matter what. I don’t need your negativity in my life.”

Lucy turns around after that pulling Tim with her, he follows her without another glance at Vanessa Chen.

Lucy is quiet as they drive home, she can feel Tim’s eyes on her. She can practically hear his concern. She hates that her mother— didn’t understand her. She had expected it but just seeing her today made her realize how messed up her relationship with her parents really was.

“Luce.” Tim whispers. She turns to face him his face full of concern. She’s struck at that moment just how lucky she is to have Tim in her corner.

“I’m fine Tim.” She says. Tim reaches for her hand, keeping his eyes on the road.

“I know you are.” He says. “It doesn’t mean it’s okay for her to treat you like that.” Lucy blows out a breath.

“I know.”

“I’m sorry you have to deal with that.” He says. “You deserve better.” Lucy turns to look at him and squeezes his hands.

“It hurts.” She admits. “But you are right I do deserve better. And I have to let her go. She will never be supportive or satisfied with anything I do. And I have people who do care. Who are supportive.”

Tim smiles at her as he pulls into their driveway. “I will always support you Luce.” He says. “No matter what.”

Lucy smiles at him and leans over the console. “Have I told you how much I love you lately?” She ask. “You have been so patient with everything. The wedding, work, me.”

“Baby, we are about to get married.” Tim says. “We are in this together.”

“Unsupportive parents and all?” She asks. He leans forward to kiss her again and only pulls back when it’s necessary to breathe.

“Yep.” He says. “Especially then.” Lucy giggles and kisses him again and again.

“Thank you.” She says. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He says back. “Now let’s go inside and make room for all the things you just registered for us.”

Lucy laughs as she climbs out of the truck, Tim meets as she’s coming around the front and wraps himself around her. She buries herself into his side as they make their way up to the front door and she can’t wait to do this for the rest of her life.

Just Tim and her and all the random things. Maybe a few kids. She smiles to herself as Tim opens the door.

She couldn’t wait for her forever with Tim to begin.
