Chapter Text
Mattsun sat straddling his bike for about 15 minutes now, playing on his phone and kicking at rocks he could reach by his feet. He felt the quiet rumble of the engine under him and took note of how his legs started to hurt. He shifted and sighed as he looked back up to the school infront of him.
From sejoh to shiratorizawa was about 30 minutes on foot. On his motorcycle, with many traffic violations, it was about 10 minutes give or take. He bounced on his bike a bit and saw out of the corner of his eye the cheer team exit the gym.
'Finally..'
He thought as he looked behind them and finally saw the shiratorizawa mens volleyball team exiting the gym. He quickly put on his helmet so they couldn't see his face and waited for a moment.
As the second and first years filled out he finally spotted the third years. He looked around for a second before spotting his target. He revved the bike loudly and the team looked over slightly startled.
Except for one.
Tendou smiled wide and quickly said his goodbyes to his teammates he rushed over to the bike and grasps the helmet head, shaking it slightly
"'Sei!"
He says fondly as the rider pats his hip and signals him to hop on the bike. Tendou picks up the red helmet with black writing on the back and hello kitty stickers littering it. He slides on his helmet and slings his leg over the back of the bike, straddling right behind Mattsun.
"Mm.. so warm.."
Tendou hums and leans down grabbing around mattsun's midsection and tucking his head on his shoulder. Mattsun shifts his butt forward in his seat and reaches around behind him to pat tendou's butt to have him slide in further.
"It's warm cause you took for fucking ever.." Tendou groaned and slides down
"Don't act like my practice going overtime hurts you more than me.." He grumbles as mattsun revs up his bike and peels out of the school parking lot. He wraps his arms around Mattsun and smiles to himself.
'God this is the best..'
"Ok someone has to know who that is!" Soekawa says as he plops down onto Reon's bed.
The third years had all agreed to hang out after practice and watch a scary movie. They hadn't expected Tendou's 'not boyfriend' to come scoop him up and leave.
"We don't, Jin!" Yamagata says as he falls ontop of Soekawa, immediately getting thrown to the ground.
"Your heavy!" The two bicker back and forth as Semi prepares the popcorn. Reon looks at him as he stood silently infront of the microwave.
"Semi.." He says with a suspecting tone.
"Hm?" He barely looks away from the microwave and the other two stop fighting.
"Hey! Yeah you live with him! Who is it?" Soekawa pops up from where he is laying down.
Semi shrugs and grabs the now finished popcorn. He hands the bag to a seemingly sullen Ushijima. "I don't know.. never met him.."
"Uh you and Tendou hang out more than conjoined twins. What do you mean you've never met him." Reon says accusingly
Oh shit detective mode..
Ok yes Semi was lying. He had met Mattsun and he thought he was nice. Him and Tendou weren't dating but he new their relationship wasn't completely non- 'intimate'. But he believed his friend when he said it wasn't romantic. Tendou had described it as a 'emotional friends with benefits' . What ever the fuck that meant.
He did feel bad for lying to his friends but c'mon! His friends were known for their rivalry with sejoh and their volleyball team. And Semi thought it was good for his bestfriend to make friends and have someone to rely on besides a certain emotionally constipated spiker. Plus Semi though Mattsun was nice so.. whatever!
So forgive him, but he wasn't ruining this for Tendou.
"I don't know him." He says firmly this time and plops down in his beanbag.
"Ok sure stick to that. We'll find out eventually." Yamagata said stuffing fresh popcorn in his mouth and glaring at Semi with the 'I'm watching you' motion.
Semi snorts and glances at Ushijima.
He didn't talk much in general but his silence was worrying. Semi knew that Ushijima liked Tendou, but he didnt think Ushijima knew Ushijima liked Tendou. That was the problem.
Semi fiddles with the rings on his finger and says, "All I know is that they really aren't dating. They met one day and got along and have been hanging out since. Tendou seems happy, so I'm not worried."
"Hm." Reon hums and drink his soda
"What, Ohira?" Semi said rolling his eyes at his friend. People often told Semi he was like the mother of the team. If that was true and he was the mother, then Reon was the quiet observant father.
"Your never 'not worried' about him." Semi pouts at that accusation and Reon continues, "but you know him better than the rest of us so I guess.. fine as long as he's happy.." He sighs and goes back to drinking.
Semi knew Reon wasn't really letting it go. He is in a phycology class for college preparation. He think Semi will fold if he acts like he doesn't care.
Newsflash: Semi's mom worked all guilt out of him by the time he hit his teens.
"Good."
"Are.. are you sure they are just friends..?" Ushijima asks in his low voice in almost a whisper.
The room was quiet for a second.
"..Yeah. I'm sure." He nods to his captain and receives a single nod in response. Reon looks at Semi and sighs.
"Ok, movie time!" Yamagata says now in his and Soekawa's spot on the bed.
How did they end up tangled like that?
"Yeah.."
They start the movie and almost all throw away thoughts of their friend. All except for Ushijima, who honestly doesn't understand why he can't stop thinking about him.
How he had swung his leg over the motorcycle with practiced ease and seemed to light up when he heard the revving of the engine.
Now he kind of wishes he knew how to ride a motorcycle..
Tendou throws his gym bag on the ground the second he enters Mattsun's room. He flops down on the raven's bed and sighs dramatically smirking when he heard a disgusted grunt, "Atleast shower before flopping down on my bed and rubbing your you all over it."
Tendou pushed himself up whining, "But im tired, 'Sei 'Sei!" He pouted, sticking his lip out and scrunching his face.
"I don't care go shower, you smell like a garbage disposal." It was now his turn to smirked snidely when Tendou squawked and huffed as he pushed himself off the bed. He walked in the path closest to the man and rested a hand on his shoulder with a faux suggestive look.
"Wanna come with me?" He wiggled his eyebrows and barked a laugh when Mattsun replied.
"Next time." He dug his knuckles in the red heads side and laughed when the man yelped and jumped away yanking a sweatshirt and some pants from Mattsun's open clothes drawer.
"You're not getting these back!" He he shouted in a sing songy tone making his way to the bathroom.
"Im aware!" He shouted back shucking off his uncomfortable school pants and pulling out some sweats. He was honestly surprised they hadn't ripped on the ride to shiratorizawa.
He heard the water turn on and he sat on the edge of his bed facing his window scrolling through his phone. He opened a message from Makki and stared at it struggling to find a response.
Makki-poo(^з^)-☆:
Wanna hang out tonight?
Rens not here
Ah, yes, Ren. The bane of Issei's existence and Makki's boyfriend of almost one year. Shit.. it's almost been a year. What the shit man?
Anyway, Makki was made well aware that Mattsun and Ren would not be getting along, when Ren called him 'noodle-arms' and Mattsun responded with a sunny tone calling him a 'donkey-nosed asskisser'.
Now he's been told it was 'uncalled for' and 'over the top'(oikawa said it was funny, but Iwaizumi disagrees.), but he didn't care. He didn't like the guy and the motherfucker always glared at him. He made it damn near impossible to talk with his friend, because he's always up. his. ass.
Iwaizumi said it was pitiful to watch him try and get the pink haired boys attention when his boyfriend was there and Oikawa patted his back solemnly. Because ofcourse those two knew about his big, fat, voluptuous, stupid, gay crush on his bestfriend. If only they were more helpful. Stupid gays.
Sigh.
His fingers tapped slow and jerking over the keyboard.
Mattsun-bear(^3^)/:
So sorry my dear but I can't tonight😞
Makki-poo(^з^)-☆:
?
Why? I thought your mom was out of town?
Wha—.... ok, he hadn't told Makki that.. ah, right oikawa, that useless gay.
Mattsun-bear(^3^)/:
She is, I just made plans already
But we can hang tomorrow, if your free?
Makki-poo(^з^)-☆:
Ren wants to go on a date tomorrow
next weekend?
Mattsun-bear(^3^)/:
I have a race next weekend
Makki-poo(^з^)-☆ is typing...
He sighed deeply and ran a hand down his face, outside of volleyball his raced dirt bikes. It had been something him and his father enjoyed together before his passing and he continued on in his old mans honor. He was currently barely in the lead with wins and really couldn't skip this race.
It determined who was the overall winner of the season, his last season in the teens section before he could move onto adult races if he wanted. But if he wanted a good team, he had to win.
He felt a weight on his back, and a drop of water fell on his neck. He didn't have to move his head to know it was Tendou. No one else was in the house, and the redhead always was one for physical touch. He looked over Mattsun's shoulder and read the messages. He snorted and fell back on the pillows, rubbing his wet hair on them.
"You're both useless at this." He stretched out like a cat and smiled with fake sympathy. Mattsun scowled and fell back, his head landing on the others stomach, making him huff. A lanky hand ran through his short hair, and he sighed, checking his messages again.
Makki-poo(^з^)-☆:
It's alright we'll figure something out🫡
He smiled melancholy at the text and sighed setting the phone on his stomach looking over at Tendou. He was already looking at him with wide observant eyes, he raised a brow and hummed in question. He lifted an arm and nodded for Mattsun to move up.
He shifted and rested with a lithe arm over his shoulders and his head now on the others chest, "This love shit sucks balls."
Tendou snorts and squeezes him once resting his head on his free arm on the pillow, "Yeah.." They are quiet for a minute or two before Tendou clicks his tongue, "There's a new episode of One piece out."
He looked down at the boy in his arm and bounces his eyebrows. Mattsun snorts and rolls his eyes he pushes himself up and grabs his laptop turning it on, "Starting to think you come here to mooch off of my channel subscriptions."
"What? Pfft, noo.... I also come here for the sejoh drama and crying sessions. The anime is just a plus!" He smiles brightly curling up underneath the comforter and pulling it up to his nose.
Mattsun crawls in next to him, sitting up against the headboard and hits play on the show placing the computer on his shins. Tendou wraps his arms around his waist and rests his head on his stomach for optimal viewing.
They sat there for hours until Mattsun checked his clock and cursed, "Shit its almost ten." He jumped up and Tendou scrambled up after him. Shiratorizawa students were fine to be off campus from 3p.m. to 10p.m. after that they recieve a detention. Needless to say this was not the first time they drove top speeds down dark roads to get Tendou to his dorms on time.
He took off his helmet and hugged Issei tightly, "It'll be alright.. I'll see you next weekend." Issei nods and watches the boy run to the dorm and just make it as the janitor approaches.
He laughs and revs the engine loudly taking a sharp turn out of the near empty parking lot, not seeing the group of third years in the second floor window piled ontop of eachother to watch him go.
And he definitely didn't see the barely there glare from one Ushijima Wakatoshi.

Chapter Text
Saturdays were always fun. Satori got up early—ten o'clock is early for him ok!—with Semi and they went down to the convenience store to stock up on snacks. The nice elderly lady, Maiko-san, always greeted them with a kind smile and some hard candies. They weren't entirely sure where she stored them but they had an idea.
Tendou suggested she was superhuman and had a pocket in space-time where she hid them, but Semi slapped him and pointed at the worn pocket on her dress. They split up going to opposite ends of the store each with there own lists and started their hunt.
They usually spent about an hour finding everything then about fifteen minutes goofing off, but today was unlike every other Saturday. They had a practice match today, with Sejoh.
Yippee.
Now he was actually excited, he got to see his friend two days in a row—unusual for them— and he got to show off on court. But he was also very not excited, because with Sejoh, comes one cocky, snobby, Oikawa Tooru.
He doesn't hate Oikawa. Really he doesn't! He thinks he's an ok person and he's a good friend to Issei, but that doesn't stop the fact that Wakatoshi got all starry eyed watching him. Every look drove a dagger so far into his chest that he swears he cant breath properly. Oikawa ignores him with grace and a sort of dignity that Tendou lacks.
If Tendou was being watched that intensely a whole match he'd cry or be a blubbering mess. Honestly, the effects the olive haired man had on him should be studied by a behavioral specialist.
Or a cardiologist, because surely his heart wasn't supposed to beat that fast when your teammate and bestfriend merely pats your back.
But nevertheless! It was going to be a fun day. He gets to tease Issei, make Iwaizumi want to kill him, taunt Oikawa till he fumes, and make Makki glare at him every time he flirts(platonically) with Issei. Seriously he wasn't sure how that man had boyfriend with how far up Issei's ass he had himself planted.
He makes his way to the front of the shop and sets his basket down quickly handing over the snacks. He sees Semi rushing to the front from the middle aisle looking panicky, " 'Tori, 'Tori, Sejohs already at school!"
"Ah what the sh–" He stops himself seeing the reprimanding look from Maiko-san, and smiled nervously, "–crap. They weren't supposed to be there until twelve I thought?"
"Yeah, it's eleven forty-five." He said pulling up his wrist to show on his watch. He set his basket besides Tendou's quickly unpacking it. Maiko-san swiped the candies and spicy noodles across the scanner quickly speaking firmly.
"You boys need something more nutritious. Noodles and candy aren't good for athletes." Semi playfully rolled his eyes and jutted his finger between the sweet fatty food and Tendou.
"Just trying to put some meat on boney over here." He dodged the hit to the back of his head and recieved a proud smile from Maiko-san.
"Yes, yes. He so tall, but so skinny. It's not healthy, Ten-chan." He reprimanded him pointed a wrinkled finger to Tendou's flustered face.
"Yeah, yeah, I know already have coach on my ass about it.." He muttered and glanced at his crooked fingers. She bagged the items and pushed them across to them leaning on the counter.
"Listen to me. I'm old and have wisdom, eh? Tell him Semi-chan!" Semi nods eagerly looking smug, having escaped the lecture meant for them both. While Semi maintained a solid weight, he was also short and had tone to his body. Tendou was not as lucky, all bones and ligaments holding him together.
"Yes, ma'am.." She shooed them out pointing at the clock urgently that now read eleven fifty. When finally out of her sight Tendou shifted the bags to his other hand and smacked the unsuspecting Semi.
He cackled and started to pick up his pace away from the other. The made it back just in time to throw their stuff in their room and bolt down to the changing rooms. When they burst through the gym doors with matching, loud apologies for being late, Washijo just rolled his eyes and told them to stretch and run a lap, instead of the usual lecture and three laps.
So he was in a good mood.
Tendou glanced around eyes landing on Ushijima immediately. He seemed unfazed by the entrance of the two as he tossed a ball between his hands idly standing on the side line. Semi tugged Tendou's attention away nodding to and empty spot on court and dragging him over. He was first on the ground putting his leg up for Tendou to push down on.
He turned to look and smirked looking back at Tendou, "You see, Mr. Motorcycle?"
He scowled at his friend and pushed down to far making the setter yelp and kick at his chest. He hushed the setter and dropped his leg going for the other one.
"You haven't told anyone have you?" He said whispering as he leaned down over Semi. The setter returned a sour look and scrunched his nose up.
"Ofcourse not. Why would I tell anyone that?—"
"Tell anyone what?" Reon appeared beside them making Tendou jump back and shriek. He put his hand over his heart and when he regained composure, he lightly punched the man's shoulder.
"Don't do that! I could've hurt our dear Semi-Semi!" He dramatically flailed his arms towards the setter who reclined on the ground looking up at them both.
"Yeah you could've hurt your setter, Reon.." The setter smiled teasingly at him, batting his pretty eyes at him. Reon smirked and leaned down to look him in the eye.
"Oh, I'm sorry, pretty boy. Want me to kiss it better?" He joked and tilted Semi's head up with one finger. Tendou watched the disturbed from the sidelines and jumped when he heard a third voice join them.
"Whats going on?" Goshiki looked between them and then to Tendou with confusion painting his features.
"Ah! The child!" He quickly covered Goshiki's eyes, much to the youngers protest, "Reon, Semi! Stop this homoerotic mating dance immediately!!"
"Huh!?" Goshiki turned warm in the face under his hands and he struggled harder against the third years hold. A whistle sounded in the gym and the three—Goshiki was still being blinded— looked over to see their coach glaring at them. Sejoh's coach and the team stood behind the scowling man, giggling and whispering while staring at them.
Tendou quickly took his hands off of the first year, and looked away whistling. He heard a snort and glanced out of the corner of his eye seeing Issei already looking at him, Hanamaki by his side. He looked toward his coach again with a wide, not guilty at all, smile.
Ushijima distracted the growing anger of their coach, merely glancing at the four. Goshiki walked away off to where his friends were and Semi dragged Reon to help him set up the net. Tendou stretched out quickly back flat on the floor popping his hip joints before sitting up. He spread his legs and reached between them to stretch out his back.
Two large warm hands startled him and over his shoulder he got a glance of Ushijima's face. His face grew warm and he let himself fall forward more under the pressure, chest nearly to the floor. An odd surprised sound came from Ushijima who faltered before clearing his throat, "Sorry, Toshi, you startled me!"
He laughs when Ushijima grunts in response slowly letting him up the pressure and heat of his hands go away. He sat up and Ushijima stepped infront of him. He held out a hand which Tendou quickly took jumping up and patting his friends shoulder.
The brunette nods to him but his attention is diverted to across the court. From where they stand, it looks like Oikawa is trying to escape the wrath of his vice captain, Iwaizumi, and Issei and Hanamaki are being of no help. Tendou follows his gaze directly to oikawa and feels a deep annoyance sprout.
His eyes find Issei and he sees him glance over with a smirk and a wink. His lip twitches up slightly and the guttural, acidic feelings he felt bubbling, calmed. He missed the look Ushijima threw his way after seeing the display between the middle blockers and sighed. He looked at his captain and his grin grew feral.
"Let's go beat their asses."
☆◇☆◇☆
This was their second match this afternoon with Shiratorizawa taking the first one in a close heated battle. Sweat from the heat of the midday sun was making him exhausted as he sat with a chilled towel around his neck. The windows, usually providing a light in the mornings or a breeze at night only made this practice worse.
They took a mandatory break, after both Shirabu and Sejoh's libero almost passed out from heat exhaustion within minutes from eachother. The fluorescents were bothering his eyes and made his contacts feel itchy, as he blinked looking at his phone to answer a text from his mom.
Motor-oil🖤:
Bathroom?
He smirked at his phone and glanced around before responding.
Cherrycola🩷:
One sec
He stood walking over to where Semi was fuzzing over a red Shirabu. He pressed two towels to either side of his face and had one wrapped around the ypungers neck. The redhead caught Semi's attention and pulled his shoulder to whisper to him, "Going to the bathroom I'll be back.."
When he pulled away Semi was smirking and shrugged, frame now less tense, "You do you I guess.."
He pursed his lips and poked the setters side in a quiet retaliation about what he was implying. He just laughed going back to his kouhai and giving him a water bottle. He saw a suspicious look from Reon, but ignored it in favor of making it to his friend before the break was over.
Three years at this school and he swears he can walk through it blind. He takes a tight corner out the door all the way across the gym and walks at an angle to hit the broken vending machine. It spits out two waters—as per usual— and he hums making his way down a winding hallway. He shoves the sticky door and it's hinges creak loudly.
He sees Issei sitting on the bathroom counter leaning against the mirror on his phone, "My stupid manager is trying to get me to exchange my bike." He says typing furiously and huffing when Tendou walks over.
He presses the cold water bottle to his friends leg earning a hiss and a swat to the side of the head. He giggles and scoots himself right between Issei's knees opening his own water and asking, "Why? I thought you just got repairs done?"
"I did! But he said it's 'getting to old' and 'a pile of clunker junk'. He said it probably won't make it the last race.." He said the last part quietly fiddling with the bottle in his hands. The stud in his mouth ran across his gums in soothing repetition as Satori nodded.
The redhead sighed and twisted the cap back on his water bottle, "I hate to say it but I agree."
Issei looked up from his phone looking hurt. He straightened up, back off the glass, gasped a quiet, "Satori.."
"Hey, hey, let me finish." He looked at him insistently, tilting his head. Issei huffed and slouched back not meeting his friends eyes, Satori sighed, "Listen.. you know I love that bike too. I remember going down to the track with my dad and watching him work and tweak at it for hours. I remember watching your dad's smile every time he saw a new modification."
Issei's demeanor changed at the mention of their father's. Although both were highly invested in their father's careers, they had only met at Matsukawa-san's funeral. Satori found him sobbing in a dark hall and had comforted the best he could while also halfway to tears.
"He loved that bike, but he loves you more. And more than anything I know he would want you to be safe, on and off the track." Issei turns his head to the side watching water slowly drip from a leaky tap. Satori placed a comforting hand on his thigh and rubbed circles with his thumb, "That bike will never be a important as you, Sei.. you and your safety come first."
"I know.." he whispered voice wobbly, "I just thought–.. maybe– just maybe I could.. you know.. finish how I started." He looked at his friend and has to fight off tears over the soft smile he got from him.
Satori huffed a fond laugh and pats his leg, "I'll call my dad after practice, you bring the bike in and you know he'll drop everything to check it out. As long as he approves I'll help vouch you race with, this one last time. Ok?"
Issei finally turns his head back to his expression hopeful, "Really? You will?"
"Yeah, yeah. Can't have my racer bummed on a brand new shiny bike, gotta have him happy on the rust bucket." He joked, but was thrown off balance by Issei flinging himself at him hugging him around the shoulders. He had hopped off the counter and now they stood in the middle of the bathroom swaying side to side.
"Thank you, 'Tori.."
"Ofcourse, 'Sei.."
☆◇☆◇☆
They each made their way back to court separately. Semi had calmed down quite a bit now just pouting as Reon finished talking him down. Shirabu layed the best he could on the bench swatting at Taichi who kept poking him in the face. A whistle blew, signaling the teams to gather up with their coaches.
Washijo explained Shirabu would be out the rest of the game much to the youngers dismay and that Semi would take his place and blah blah blah.
Tendou really couldn't focus right now.
Ushijima was up close his back and he could feel the heat radiating off of him. If he dared lean back he would feel hard muscle and warm skin—well, shirt but you know what he means. He felt the others breath on him and his brain was swimming.
His breath hitched when he felt a hand graze his waist and the breath grow closer, "Where did you go before?" His deep voice rumbles through Tendou's whole system making mush of his already muddled brain.
He was quiet for a second while his brain tried to compute the words that were spoken to him. But he soon nods and whispers back, "Just went by the old vending machine.. I think they found out we can still get things out of it though, the water wasn't stale.."
Ushijima hummed and leaned back to where he was before, but his hand stayed in place like a weight. It kept him attached to the floor and not floating off into space. Though his lungs were playing astronaut as he fought to keep even breaths, and his head would beg to differ seeing as how light headed he currently felt.
Washijo clapped once and dismissed his players. The weight was gone, his breath was back, and his head was heavy. But still he fell in line and gave an impish smirk to Iwaizumi, who stood unamused infront of him.
The whistle blew. Shiratorizawa's ball. Ushijima was up to serve.
Up.
Jump.
Hit.
Game on.
When it happened everyone was shocked. Even Ushijima who had hit the damn ball with the force of a thousand suns. No one knew why Ushijima had hit it so hard especially during a practice match. All they knew was there was now a forming bruise the size of Miyagi on Matsukawa Issei's forearms and Ushijima looked sheepish.
Practice had ended awhile ago 2-0 in favor of shiratorizawa, Sejoh went home, and Tendou had called his dad. He had been excited to hear about his son's day and how the match went. He had heartly agreed to check out old Matsukawa-san's bike and almost sounded teary reminiscing on the 'good old days'.
Tendou was currently on the phone with his father and Issei pacing around his room with every clunk he hears. Semi sits strumming his guitar not really paying much attention to anything. There was a loud noise from his phone and he flinched, "Everything ok?"
He asked with uncharacteristic nervousness. Thats when Semi's focus finally settled on him and the tracks he had formed on the floor. There was all call of 'all good' through the speaker and Issei said he is just going to call him back when the evaluation is all done.
He reluctantly hung up and huffed sitting on the lower bunk, Semi's bed. The virtuoso set his guitar on the stand next to his bed and sat up next to his friend. He leaned forward to get a good look at the redheads face before sighing.
Tendou's thoughts were visible in his eyes and the tension in the usually unworried boys form made him anxious. He shook his head and wrapped his arms around lanky shoulders pulling him down into a bear hug.
Tendou yelped when he was pulled unexpectedly and looked at his friend bewildered. Semi rested his head on Tendou's shoulder and curled into the olders side, "Why are you all worked up? Mattsun's had tons of races on this bike."
He relaxed and layed back more comfortably, wrapping his arm around the small, "Its just.. scary. I mean that bike is older than both Issei and I, and last time–"
"He's had it fixed, you dad is looking at it, its stable, and shit Mattsun's probably the best driver I've ever met." Semi turned and they now laid just face to face. He held Tendou's hand, which was cold and clammy. Tendou nodded and shut his eyes pulling their hands up to his face.
"I know.."
They were quiet for a minute before Semi snorted softly, exhaustion from the long day seeping into their brains, "Your one of the most selfless and caring people I know.. you know when you're not being an asshat.."
Giggles consumed the two, as sleep fell over them wholly.
Tendou, a light sleeper, woke up to a quiet buzz across the room and the flash of his phone. He glanced at the boy blocking his way out and began his stealthy climb over him. Opposite to his roomate, Semi slept like a rock. Throw a pillow over his face and he'd probably only wake up when he was dead, but to Tendou it was the principle of being polite.
He threw Semi's duvet over him and walked silently to his buzzing phone on their night stand—that both stored their respective snacks in. He turned the device over in his hand and saw Issei number pop up.
He had texted him a few times, twice an hour ago and once just recently.
9:03
Motor-oil🖤: Hey your dad just got done with the assessment
Motor-oil🖤: He said it can ride it for a bit longer before it disintegrates under me💀
9:58
Motor-oil🖤: your probably asleep rn but thank you, Tori. You're officially the best friend i could ask for❤️
He smiles at the message and rolls his eyes.
10:07
Cherrycola🩷: little hurt your just realizing this now😒
Cherrycola🩷: but I'll take it ig😞🫶
Cherrycola🩷: goodnight, Sei❤️
He walked back to their beds, setting his phone on his charger, before climbing into his bunk. He pulled his blanket over him and sighed staring at the ceiling. Issei will be ok.
He'll win the race and they'll do their after race dinner just like they always do. Sleep takes over Tendou and he dreams of his father's shop, old Matsukawa-san's smile, and the matching one his son wears when he wins. The smile Tendou is going to see next weekend.
Issei is going to win.
Because he's just to damn stubborn not to.

Chapter 3: Just friends
Chapter Text
Mattsun couldn't drive his motorcycle to school, thanks to Shiratorizawa's lovely captain. His arms were still black and blue, hardly healed from the practice match and it made it hurt to hold onto the handle bars. So as he strolled down his street to Makki's house, he hoped to God his bestfriend hadn't made it necessary to walk with his
boyfriend.
Eugh.
Mattsun was..
happy
for him. Dont get him wrong, he thinks Makki deserves the world and this guy, Ren, seemed to make him happy. He just wished he hadn't been so absorbed in racing to realize how he felt about the pink haired man.
He supposed there were rather obvious signs that he felt more about him than he told himself he did, lovingly pointed out by Tooru and Hajime. But to him those things weren't 'obvious' they were just things friends did!
Cuddling? Normal! Play flirting? Normal! Wanting to be with the other and going out of his way to be with him? Normal! It was all shit he did and felt with Satori, so he guessed the other man had normalized it in his head.
So when Makki had walked up with a bright smile on his face, blush high on his cheeks, and 'good news', Mattsun felt like he was shot several times. He felt the jealousy build up in him when he saw them in the halls, when Makki would smile at him in passing, when he they couldn't just drop everything and sit on Mattsun's roof anymore.
So ofcourse Mattsun threw himself into racing. On the track he could let everything out, there was no hurt no regret, just the wind and sound. It drowned out everything, and when he would hear Satori's voice over his comms he felt at home.
As he came up on the house, he heard a door open and a voice call out, "Bye, ma! Bye dad!"
Makki shouted rushing out the door and most likely away from an assault of lipstick marks from his mother. He sighed extravagantly still not aware of his audience and muttered curses as his bag got twisted on his back, "Need help, snookums?"
Mattsun called out with a wide smirk. Makki whipped his head up and his eyes widened with a smile when he saw the other man, "Well flip me over and eat me out, isn't it Matsukawa Issei!"
"The one and only." He bowed dramatically, raising when he heard steps toward him. Makki stood infront of him with a bright mischievous smile and knocked his shoulder to get him to start walking the way to school.
"What are you doing here? Slumming it with the poor for once?" He snickered poking Mattsun's side with a finger. The raven poked his friend back much to Makki's dismay as he tried and failed to avoid it.
"Can't drive my bike, my arms still hurt to much." He shoves up his uniform sleeves and shows off the bruises that have become even more colorful. Makki hisses at the sight and grimaces.
"Man what is that guys problem.." Mattsun's shrugs and tugs his sleeves back down. A voice came from behind them startling them slightly until they turned to see Oikawa and Iwaizumi walking up.
"Who's problem?" Oikawa asked with a raised brow. Mattsun sighed again and once again moved his sleeves for the other two to see. Oikawa scowled and Iwaizumi hissed like Makki had, "God he's such a prick.."
Mattsun hummed not even bothering to pull the sleeves down again as the four begin their walk, Iwaizumi snorts and says in a teasing manner, "You know I bet its because you flirt with, Tendou-san."
"Ugh, Yokai-san. I'll tell you what he's got to be one of, if not the most annoying one on that team.. after Ushiwaka ofcourse." Oikawa whines as Makki snickers beside Mattsun.
Mattsun rolls his eyes at the nickname and shakes his head. His voice comes out harsher and more defensivethan he meant when he speaks, "Do you have to call him that?"
Oikawa puts his hands up in mock surrender, "Sorry, sorry forgot about your crush on the guy." He said teasingly making Mattsun roll his eyes harder and quickly reach a hand to mess up the setters hair. His reflexes were too quick and he rushed to hide behind Iwaizumi, and Mattsun would rather eat rocks than try to get through the short man.
"I mean.. you
do
flirt with him alot Mattsun. And its rather obvious Ushijima has a.. — crush? Obsession? I don't know whatever you call it with him I guess — on Tendou-san." Makki pipes up, voice uncharacteristically, dull and his eyebrow raised high.
Mattsun tensed and he glared back at Oikawa, the last thing he needed was for Makki to think he had a crush on Satori. Iwaizumi patted his shoulder sympathetically, "It's alright, Mattsun. We're your friends, we won't judge you for liking him."
Mattsun scowled and shrugged off his hand barking out a response, "I
do not
have a crush on Sa– Tendou.." he closed his eyes as if to accept his fate as Oikawa began laughing maniacally. Iwaizumi smirked mischievously and shrugged like he had already won.
"Oh~ Sa- tendou, eh? Yeah fucking right! You so have a–" Mattsun rolled his eyes and started to walk faster away from Oikawa and Iwaizumi with Makki keeping pace with him. The four split off when they reached school, the setter and spiker going to set up for morning practice.
Makki was silent next to him as the made their way to their lockers to change for practice. The wing spikers phone began buzzing like crazy and he sighed as he picked it up and answered the call, "Hey, baby–"
Mattsun stopped listening.

Mattsun pulls on his practice shirt as the second years start filing in and he risks a glance at Makki. He's still on the phone but he seems agitated, he talks with a clipped tone and his shoulders are tense. Mattsun sees him take a deep breath and whisper, "We'll talk later I've got practice.. yeah, bye."
The man rolls his eyes shoving his phone in his locker. Mattsun whistles getting his attention and tilts his head in question. Makki shakes his head in quiet communication.
'Not right now..'
" 'Kay, pinkie, let's hit it." He walks by patting his lower back — wishing he'd gone lower — and smirks at the yelp Makki let's out at the nickname. Mattsun may have a new bruise on the back of his neck, but now Makki is smiling and laughing as the race to the gym.
'So fucking worth it.'
Tendou snickered at he and Mattsun's texts earning a quizzical look from Semi who was finished changing beside him. He handed his phone over and nodded to it as he pulled on his practice shirt quickly to see Semi's reaction. The setter wolf whistled then chuckled quietly, "Dude.. if you dont hit I'll try.."
He shook his head handing the phone back. Tendou rolled his eyes with a smirk playing on his lips, "Who says I haven't?"
"Haven't what?" Reon walks in from filling up his bottle, Ushijima in tow. Semi shakes his head and goes back to looking busy leaving Tendou stranded — traitor.
Then like a ghost from the darkest corners of the room Yamagata laughs over his shoulder. Tendou jumps nearly dropping his phone and whips around to see the smirk on the libero's face, "Tendou's got a half-naked man on his phone!"
He says in a sing songy tone looking towards the other third years. Reon's eyebrows rise nearly to his hairline and Ushijima has completely stopped all motion. Soekawa who had just walked in nearly spit out his drink and Semi tried his hardest to hide in his locker.
Tendou sputtered out a response as quickly as he could to rectify any
misconceptions,
"He's just showing some bruises. He uh– he fell off his dirt bike this last weekend and fucked up his arms!"
"Right.." Reon starts walking closer making Tendou slightly nervous with the calm look on his face, "So if it was his
arms
then why shirtless?" He raised a inquisitive brow with a half smirk on his face as Tendou starts to go red in the face.
Tendou opens his mouth to respond when Goshiki — the wonderful God send that boy is — calls him from the door, "Tendou-san! Can you help me practice please? I've got Shirabu to set." The first year had a blinding smile that distracted most as Tendou slipped around Reon's imposing figure.
"Well let's go then! Don't want Shirabu-kun to get much sourer than he already is.." He giggles as he pushes his kouhai out the door again, successfully escaping the interrogation.
Behind him he was being silently cursed by Semi who was for lack of better words, left to the wolves. He raised his arms in surrender and said, "I don't know anything."
"Well thats a lie, but ok." Reon says with the smirk still resting on his face. Semi looked at him and raised a challenging brow, he mimicked the raising arms motion and said, "None of my business! But I thought you said the
weren't
together?"
"They aren't."
"Shirtless picture?" Reon points over his shoulder and raises a brow.
"Their just close. Its like when I showed you all my belly button piercing, last year. " He shrugs and waves the man off as a few of the first years call for the vice captains. Soekawa leaves followed by a still wondering Reon and a snickering Yamagata.
Its just Ushijima and Semi left in the locker room. The air was stuffy, and Semi almost couldn't bare to look at his oldest friend.
While, yes, everyone could agree Semi and Tendou quickly grew close, the type of friends rumors start up about. Dating and shit, ew. Semi and Ushijima have been friends since junior high. Semi was patient with Ushijima, he would sit and not take offense where others would scoff and turn around taking his blank expression for apathy. The truth is though Ushijima feels, he feels alot.
He just doesn't
understand.
Semi quickly clocked something was
inherently
different with him. Nothing wrong per se just different. His sister was diagnosed with contamination OCD when she was seven years old, after she fell into dirt and turned nearly catatonic at the feeling of being dirty. He didn't think this was the same but it gave some perspective on the man's behavior.
'Maybe he's like Eimi..'
"Do you have OCD?" He said plainly one day at lunch with the boy. After a year he learned not to beat around the bush and just be straight to the point with him. There was really no point in it, he never pocked up on tone or social queues. That was a good thing for Semi who struggled himself with his tone and how he said things.
Ushijima looked up from his food and shook his head. He finished chewing his bite before — just like usual — patting the corners of his mouth with a towel, "I have aspergers."
"Assburgers?" Semi scrunched his nose and tilted his head. Ushijima's lip twitched up in a rare and short smile before shaking his head again.
"As-per-gers, I was diagnosed at eight while going through family issues. It affects my ability to communicate and tell when others are genuine in their intentions. Though it affects others differently." He's quiet for a minute before pushing his beans away from the rice on his plate, "I've always had trouble with being able to tell when someone wishes to be my friend.
Semi watches him closely and quietly. This is proving the most the man has talked outside of during and about volleyball
ever
to the setter. He refuses to interrupt.
"So when– uh.. when you continued to try and didn't take offense to me I was– I
am
very grateful that you.. stayed." Semi nodded and gave a small smile to his friend. He lifted his pinkie up across the table and held it out.
Ushijima raised a questioning brow and stared at it for a moment, blinking. Semi shook his hand, before just reaching for Ushijima's putting it in the same position.
He wrapped his pinkie around Ushijima's and pushed the boys finger down molding it around his own, "I promise to always be sincere and genuine. You won't have to wonder with me, ever."
Ushijima stared at their conjoined fingers and his lips twitched up again, this time staying in a small smile. He squeezed the setters finger once and they released eachothers fingers. They went back to eating after that, not needing to prolong the conversation.
So now as he stands infront of his oldest friend, he stays firm in his promise. He raises his pinkie and stares into deep green eyes. Once the other joins his pinkie and stares back Semi starts, "I have not lied. To my knowledge, Satori is not
dating
that guy. Reon and Yamagata are just being nosey and exaggerating."
The spiker stares at him for a minute and nods once solidly before their hands slip away again. Semi waits as his captain laces up his shoes and stands. They walk out side by side and as they walk down the stairs Ushijima hums, "I think I've had a revelation."
"What is it, Ushijima?" Semi looks to his friend with a smile. The larger man looks back with a blank stare.
"I think I may be romantically interested in Tendou." Semi squints with a pained smile on his face. He pats the man's shoulder and nods.
'You're the last one to know buddy.'
He thinks immediately with a smirk.
"I support you." He says instead, a kinder alternative. It makes the spiker give a small, gentle smile and Semi knows he made the right choice.
Tendou laid strewn across Ushijima's bunk, with his head hanging off the side. He felt a little light headed but it wasn't enough to distract him from the fight scene he was currently enveloped in. Morning practice was a cake walk, schooling drained his soul, and then afternoon practice made him wish to swan dive from the roof..
But now? Now he was relaxed, freshly showered, and laying in one of the most comfortable beds ever. It was warm and smelled of a light cologne he knew Ushijima used, a gift from his father from the states. It made his head woozy with every inhale of breath, a smile permanently etched on his face.
He heard the door click open and glanced up to see a shirtless Ushijima walk in. He had a white towel around his neck and light gray sweatpants low around his waist. Tendou gulped and looked away quickly as to accidentally pop a boner in one of his bestfriends bed.
He moved from his spot that he sensed he was about to be scolded for and laid on his stomach facing the closet. He rested his head on the pillows, manga still partially blocking his view. Ushijima wandered around the room for a moment dropping his towel in the laundry bin and picking up his gold chain, a gift from his mother.
Tendou watched his back move as he pulled on a shirt and felt his face heat up. He was just quick eneough to not get caugh staring — like a creep, his mind helpfull provides — but misses the man walking closer to him.
If he's honest he lost his spot the moment Ushijima walked in and he hasn't even tried to find it yet. Especially not when his side dips down on the bed with a new weight next to him. He chances a glance back and sees the man reading from behind him, not sitting but leaning on the bed.
He scoots over and pats the spot next to him as an invitation that Ushijima takes quickly. They stay like that for awhile, Tendou finally finding his place and trying to read again. But it's just scanning the words as he feels Ushijima's warm side pressed against his.
The only sounds in the room were their breathing and the mindless flipping of pages. Once at the end he sighs putting the book down.
'I'll have to re-read that..'
He thinks to himself sitting up and stretching like a cat popping his back in several places. He glances over to the spiker mid-stretch and sees him staring.
At him.
He staring at tendou, or atleast where his shirt rides up to expose his pale abdomen. He snorted and put his arms down now fully looking at his friend, "I know, I know you can still basically see through me, huh?"
A
"It is very unhealthy." He says plainly finally looking Tendou in the eyes.
Tendou snickered again and flopped backwards on the bed, "You sound like coach. And not to
brag
or anything, but this guy–" He points to himself dramatically, "–has gained a whopping 18 kilograms, and maintained a weight of 56 Kay-gees."
He smiled proudly and whooped throwing his arms in the air. Ushijima nodded silently and seemed pressed to say something but withheld for just a moment before spitting out, "I'm proud of you."
"Eh?" Tendou dropped his arms and looked at him curiously, "For what? Gaining weight?"
"No, for sticking to the meal plan Coach has given you. I understand you are not usually very hungry but it's good that you still make a point to get enough protein and carbs each day. You are very tenacious, and take it on like a challenge." He pauses for a second for his words to sink in as Tendou stares wide eyes at him.
He places a large warm hand over the one of Tendou's, closest to his covered thigh. It's cold and scrunched under his, but he still holds it with immense care, "I admire that about you."
Butterflies fluttered in his stomach and his hand twitched once under the warm hold. He felt his face heat up again and he didn't need to look in the mirror to know he was getting incredibly and increasingly red, "Oh.. well, thank you, Waka-kun."
Ushijima nods and smiles at him. It wasn't in usual Ushijima fashion, it was wider with more teeth than probably necessary, but it was cute. Silence had enveloped them and Tendou did everything in his might not to freak out. He was failing miserably. Every second he laid there looking into his deep green eyes he felt more aware of himself.
His leg is bent funny, his shirt had ridden up, his neck ached from how he was laying earlier, his hand was growing warmer by the second and his head was as light as when he laid over the edge of the bed not even twenty minutes ago. He could feel and sense every movement in the room like a sensory overload.
He was on the edge of a cliff about to fall off when his phone rang in his pocket. They both jolted out of their staring competition, both looking to where his sweatpants pocket was buzzing. He lifted his — now warm — hand from the spot and pulled out his phone to see almost a dozen texts from Mattsun.
They nearly fill up his lock screen and with the man freaking out. The man dials him a few times hanging up immediately after. Tendou sits up quickly almost panicked at the amount of texts, until he read the most recent one.
Motor-oil🖤:
TORIIII I YHINK HES BREAOING UP WITH HIM PLEASE ANSWER
He huffed a laugh and rubbed his face One his screen off again. His smile was fond as the phone still buzzed and he looked to Ushijima, "I've gotta go deal with this.. but I'll leave this–" He grabs the manga Ushijima was originally planning to read and hands it to the spiker, "–for you to finish, and we can talk about it tomorrow night."
Ushijima's face is blank now but he nods taking the book in one gentle hand. The same hand that had been on Tendou's not to long ago. Tendou scooches off the bed and leans to grab his bag, before falling into his steps toward the door, "Goodnight, Waka-kun!"
"Goodnight, Tendou." He said in his usual tone but he looked at Tendou as he left, almost like he was trying to make him stay. Tendou smiled and waved happily as he shut the door behind him. He pulled out his phone again and glanced over his texts getting the gist of what Mattsun was talking about.
He shook his head smirking and trudged up the stairs to his room. His mind was still buzzing from earlier and his stomach was filled with butterflies, but he found a calm in the almost constant most in the palm of his hand.
Cherrycola🍒:
your a cockblock
Motor-oil🖤:
You're welcome. NOW HELP ME MOTHER FUCKER
He snorted and dialed the man. It was gonna be a long, long night.

Chapter Text
"Oh my god, Satori! I'm not even joking, I think he's gonna break up with him. I can feel it in my bones." Issei gushed infront of his bathroom mirror wiping off the thin eyeliner he had applied that morning, for nothing if not to piss off his older teachers. Satori was on the other side of the video call munching on some chips as the man went on and on about all of the signs.
He sighs and thinks about just an hour earlier, he was laying down in Wakatoshi's bed the man halfway leaning over him, their hands intertwined. It was like a dream. Eita was sneaking out when Satori showed up and he helped the man by closing the window behind him.
The setter said he probably wouldn't be back that night, so Satori had personal things he wanted to do while his roommate was out. But he was currently stuck listening to Issei tell him all about how Hanamaki-san seemed annoyed at his boyfriend recently and seemed close to ending the relationship.
"Are you even listening to me?" Issei pouts on the other end of the call and stares at the camera closely. He stared at his friend before smirking and raising a brow, "Well, well, well.. getting off on the thought of Waka-chan, eh?"
If his face wasn't already burning up he'd be melting with how warm he was at the accusation, "Oh fuck off! That's lewd.."
"Oh come on.. like we haven't already explored that together.." His smirk widened at the memories. While they were figuring themselves out, before Wakatoshi or Maki, end of their first year and halfway through second year. Weekends when Issei's mom wasn't around, and Satori's dad was down at the track.
Issei plopped down on his bed holding the camera over him, "My mom is gone until Wednesday.."
Satori really did consider it. Sneaking out, going to Issei's, sleeping peacefully for the first time since Wednesday. He shrugged and rubbed his face roughly, a sigh coming from the depths of his soul came through the phone, "Eitas out tonight.. I wouldn't have anyone to cover for me if there's patrol in the morning. Plus I dont need my friends suspecting I'm sleeping with you mor than they already do.."
Issei smirked, then grimaced and clicked his tongue rolling on his side, "I still think that 'patrol' thing is weird.."
"Its so students don't sneak out of the dorms–"
"Yeah, yeah 'and hurt the integrity of the oh so amazing shiratorizawa academy'.. whatever, you want me to come get you tomorrow after practice? I got some old band tees I think Semi-san might like." Issei clicked of his bedside table light and pulled his covers up to his shoulders, now only illuminated by the small reading light on Satori's bunk.
"Sure. I can ask my dad to call me out tomorrow night as long as you can bring me to school on Wednesday." He said slinking down under his own cover, his voice distant like his mind was elsewhere.
"What's wrong, Tori.." Issei said squinting his eyes and looking over his friends glowing face. His pale skin was sharp against his red hair and his eyes looked tired.
"I.. I don't know. I've been having some strange dreams recently.. Nightmares. Its making me scared to fall asleep." Issei's brows furrowed and he sat up slightly from his place on his bed. His eyes almost hurt from how hard he was staring at his phone screen.
"How long?" He bite at the skin around his thumb nail and watched Satori squeeze his eyes shut then sigh again.
"A week, maybe? I dont know its been a while now.." He pulls his comforter up to his chin and avoids looking at his friend who was now looking at him expectingly.
"Well what are they about?"
Now here's the thing. Issei is one of his best friends, has been for a long time. They have seen the most awful parts of one another, taken them in and held them close. They had kissed the pain away and always been open to one another.
But how was he supposed to tell Issei, the man who he trusted and who trusted him, that his nightmares consisted of him. How every night sirens blared in his head and blood covered his hands, as smoke rose through rain.
He shook his head and buried his face in his pillows. He heard a sigh and some shifting before his name was called, "I'll call you back in a second, Tori.." the call was ended quickly and Satori felt his chest tense up.
His eyes burned with tears he refused to spill as his mind immediately went to the dreams that replayed over and over in his mind. They all played out differently but almost always had the same premise. Issei raced that old bike, he gets close to the finish, he pushes to hard, he crashes. Like clockwork.
He starts to drift off sleep heavy in his eyes and limbs. His phone was a still weight in his hand as he huffed turning over to sleep. He didn't know how much time had passed, but his phone rang and he picked up immediately. Issei sounded winded and everything was loud from his side of the call, " 'Tori I don't know how long I can hold on for, I need you to come open this window!"
He whisper shouted through the reciever ending the call quickly. Satori shot up looking at his window as knocks sounded. He scrambled out of bed and down the ladder, throwing open the curtains quickly. He gapped when he saw Issei clinging to the ledge oh the window and quickly opened it to let the man in.
He pulled himself up crashing onto the floor with a loud thud and an accompanying 'ow!'. Satori stared at him shocked as he stood up brushing himself off, "Eugh.. why couldn't you have gotten a lower dorm, huh? That took like five minutes to scale.." he huffed annoyed.
Satori scoffed with an amused smile, "Right like its my fault you climbed the building?" He went forward and wrapped his arms around Issei's neck, burying his face there and relaxing against his friend.
Arms wrap around his waist and pull him in, a kiss is placed on his temple, and he is being rocked side to side, "C'mon.. im tired.." Issei tugs him towards the bed, they halfway stumble over to the bunk. Issei climbs up first, holding a hand out to pull the redhead up.
Satori basically falls on Issei once up there. He rests his head in the mans neck with his leg thrown over his waist. Theres a hand carding though his hair and one messing with the hand he is resting on Issei's stomach, "When do you need to go in the morning.."
"I'll leave when Semi-san gets back.." He whispers placing a kiss in the mop of red hair he is currently resting his head on, "Just rest 'Tori.."
Sleep found him almost instantly that night as he rested on Issei's chest. He didn't care if for the next few weeks he would have to explain himself to Eita, who at this point was questioning himself of the two middle blockers were a thing. He didn't care that Issei would have to go in the morning.
Because for the first time in weeks he would get to sleep peacefully.
That peace didn't last.
Eita got back to the dorm around five, barely standing and looking half out of it. He bumped every surface imaginable as he made his way to his lower bunk, but paused at the open window.
'Didn't Satori close that..?'
He stepped up shakily on his lower bed frame and peaked over the edge of Satori's bed. He snorted when he saw Issei and Satori curled up together. He pulled out his phone and snapped a picture to be able to remember the moment when he woke up in..
'Shit.. two hours.. Matsukawa has to leave.'
He reached over and shook his friend awake. Satori blinked bleary at Eita before stretching his limbs out and whined, "What, Eita.." He muttered between his teeth wrapping his arm back around Issei.
"Sorry to break it to you, but Matsukawa-san has to go before anyone wakes up and sees him." His friends whined again and squeezed the body next to him tighter pouting.
"Its no use I've been trying for fifteen minutes." Matsukawa voices, shocking Eita to almost fall off the bed.
"Shit!" Eita hissed as his ankle throbbed from the jerking motion, "Man a warning that you're awake would be nice!" Matsukawa just shrugged and hugged the arm around Satori's shoulders kissing the top of his head.
"Tori.. please I have to go home, and Semi-san wants to sleep." Issei pointedly ignored the eyebrow that rose on Semi's face at the kiss, watching Satori's face intently. The red head huffed and reluctantly rolled off of him.
Issei sat up straight and looked over to Semi's unimpressed gaze, "You look like a zombie sitting up like that." The ash blonde said with a monotone voice.
"And you smell like an alcoholic musician who still writes about his highschool sweetheart." Semi's lip curled and he scoffed hopping of the bed and walking to the bathroom.
"Get the fuck outta my dorm." He said grabbing some clothes and disappearing into the ensuite bathroom.
"Aye aye captain!" He whisper shouted as he hopped out of the bed only stopping for a second to place a kiss on Satori's cheek and whisper in his ear, "Sleep well, I'll see you tonight.."
A small smile showed him the man had heard him and was enough for him to continue his movement towards the window. He was dreading having to drive his bike not hyped on pain medication, but he needed to get home somehow.
The climb down the building was relatively easier than the climb up and much more necessary considering how early some students woke up and wandered the dorms. He was able to touch the ground in about two minutes beginning his trek across the parking lot to his bike.
He hid it in the back so no one would see it and grow suspicious, but really what was the point when his legs hurt once he reached it. He huffed as he straddled it and glanced over at the building he just left, the window that was still open. Satori leaned out it and waved.
Issei smiled shaking his head as he adjusted his helmet to pull it on. He revved his bike twice gaining the attention of some teachers arriving in the parking lot. He peeled out of the parking lot past an elderly teacher and smirked as he saw the man yell after him
Satori made his way down to the mess hall grabbing some yogurt and a granola bar from the breakfast bar. He sat next to Wakatoshi at a table and nodded to his friends. He was sure he looked like shit because Reon kept glancing at him and Semi snorted at him when he sat down. Yamagata came in whining with Soekawa close behind.
Soekawa got the man sitting before snapping his head to Satori who brought a spoonful of yogurt to his mouth, "Listen, Tendou, I don't care if your dating someone–" Satori looked over wide-eyed making a confused noise, "–But! When he revs his fucking bike like that at 4:48 in the fucking morning! Then I care just a little bit."
Satori shook his head vigorously and swallowed the yogurt choking a bit on it, "No, no! I'm not–"
"I just told you I don't care–"
Satori argued with Soekawa about the implications of what he just said, he was to distracted to notice the stiffness of Wakatoshi's shoulders. He stared at the oatmeal, almost all gone and no longer hot, like it had personally wronged him.
'Was that the noise I heard this morning?'
'Did he stay the night with Tendou?'
'Ofcourse he did where else would he be.'
Wakatoshi looked up just slightly to look at Semi's face. The man looked amused at the situation but seemed to sense two eyes boring into him. He looked over at Wakatoshi and shrugged shaking his head.
He was gone last night, he stopped by to tell Tendou last night that he wouldn't be back until early the next morning. Something about a concert, he wasn't sure he was grabbing he clothes for his shower while they were speaking.
'Was that why Tendou left so quickly? To go be with that guy?'
He looked over slowly to the redhead who was sputtering and red in face. He has a small bit of granola stuck to his lower lip and a smudge if yogurt on his chin. Over all he looked like he just rolled out of bed and begrudgingly made his way down here.
'God, he's beautiful.'
" 'Toshi!! They're bullying me!" Satori turned to him and placed his face directly on Wakatoshi's shoulder. The brunette looked toward Soekawa who had an exasperated look to him as he looked to his fellow co-captian.
"Thats very rude, Soekawa." His vice captain squawked at him and grumbled as Semi cackled and Reon chuckled beside him.
Satori wore a cocky smile and he kept his head leaned on Wakatoshi's shoulder. The larger man was sure his heart could be heard through his chest and that his face was red. By the look he got from his Reon his face being red was confirmed quickly.
'Well fuck.'

Chapter Text
It was odd how many times Issei ended up loitering in shiratorizawa's parking lot.
He laid against his propped up bike and sighed heavily, sick of counting the birds that flew by. He sat up flicking through the apps on his phone until the gym doors opened. He was immediately met with a bright smile as he looked over and waved.
Satori turned to Semi and started to pull him forward until they were both stopped by Soekawa. After a brief back and forth he sees the whole group walking towards them. Satori makes a flicking gesture near his face signaling Issei to flip his visor down.
His helmet, decked out by the one and only Satori, had a voice muffler on the side for during races mostly. Technically when racing as a minor swearing is prohibited and can get you eliminated, a situation which has happened before. But it was good for these situations too, when neither Issei nor Satori wanted to give up eachother to their respective friend groups.
They come up to him and he nods to the group reaching back into the compartment on his motorcycle. He pulls out some shirts and tosses them to Semi, who's face immediately brightens. Satori rings his hands together before clearing his throat awkwardly, "Uh guys this is, 'Sei.. 'Sei this is Soekawa, Reon, Yamagata, Wakatoshi, and well you know Semi."
"Yeah, real pleasure.." Semi mutters looking through the shirts like a kid on Christmas. Issei snorted at the setter, who was usually terrifying.
Issei nods his head again and speaks so they can hear him slightly, "Nice to meet you all."
"How'd you and Ten meet?" Yamagata, ofcourse was the first to pry making Satori whine quietly as he reached for hie helmet that was attached to the bike.
Issei pats his bike and says with a hidden smirk, "Races." Technically, its true. They had seen eachother at races they just never interacted before the funeral. Satori lifted his leg over and sat on the far back of the bike, not in position to take off, with his helmet still him his nervous hands.
Soekawa scrunched his eye brows and looked at the redhead, "You race?"
"No, I go to races with my dad. 'Sei races tho, he's pretty good too." Issei snorted at his words then speaking before thinking.
"Well actually, you said I was amazing last night.." He feels a hard jerk on his helmet and laughs boisterously at the pink tint on Satori's cheeks. A punch to his side makes him wheeze out an apology, as Satori hides his face on his back.
"Different situations, jerk off." He muttered just loud enough, Reon's eyebrows shot up and Yamagata scoffed quietly with an amused smile. All present seemed amused at the twos antics.
All except one.
Issei had been avoiding looking at him from the start, not only because the man could snap him in half but because he looked highly inclined to at the moment. Ushijima had a deadly aura about him that made Issei shiver once he looked over at him. Those peircing green eyes bore down on him like he had just insulted his entire family and kicked his dog.
Issei shifted uncomfortably, no longer laughing at his joke, which had turned against him somehow. He clears his throat and starts, "Well, its been a pleasure, guy, but we gotta get going." He reached back and patted Satori's butt telling him to scoot forward. A movement that was so natural to the two of them, became frightening as Ushijima's eyes narrowed more on him.
Once he felt Satori right along his back and he saw the helmet was on him he was ready to bolt, but stayed because Satori was saying goodbye. He leaned down hoping to escape the glare of Ushijima only to feel it harder as Satori automatically wrapped his arms around his waist to hang on. Once again, the movement delegated to muscle memory at this point made him flinch as Ushijima finally spoke.
"Goodnight, Tendou."
"Goodnight, Waka-kun!"
Issei was finally able to pull out of the lot as they stepped back. He sighed in relief only as they turned the corner enroute to his house. Laughter cackled through their intercom and Issei reached back and smacked the man, "You looked ready to piss yourself, 'Sei!"
"Oh shut the hell up! You couldn't even see me!" He shouts indignantly back, stopping at a red light. The red head continues to giggle until they pull into Issei's garage. His racing bike sat to the side next to his moms sleek black car making Satori stop for half a second. They pull off their helmets, setting them down as they walk into the house from the back door.
Issei poked his head in his moms office seeing her typing away at the computer and quietly walks past so he didn't disturb her. Satori followed him up the stairs and dug through his clothes once in the mans bedroom. He left the room to shower leaving Issei to sit on his bed and pick out a movie.
When Satori came back Howls Moving Castle was displayed on the television and he smiled softly at it, "Figured you'd wanna watch it.." Issei looked at him from the bed before standing and walking past him, "I'll make popcorn."
Satori quickly made himself comfortable in the other mans bed, burrowing under the covers and peeking out just to see the television. The hoodie he grabbed was over his head, covering his damp hair and saving the pillows from being wet.
He watched the screen intently as a feeling of comfort rolled over his body. Its like the movie playing, Issei's bed cradling him, and the smell of a soft cologne enveloped his soul and kissed his forehead. Then he got an actual kiss on the forehead as Issei hopped over him to lay on his side of the bed. Popcorn bowl between their legs as they moved close to eachother.
Satori layed his head on Issei's arm, which was behind his head. The sound of the movie and chewing filled the room letting them both relax. About midway through the movie the popcorn bowl is empty and discarded, Satori throws his leg over Issei's and rests his head on his shoulder.
The raven looks down at his friend and he looks up. There's a still moment before Issei gently pecks Satori's lips. The redhead returns the movement and before they know it slow long kisses are being exchanged between them. Issei gently craddles Satori's face in his palm and a calm wave falls over them.
They slow to a stop, both breathing heavier then before but neither willing to go farther. They both just lay there looking at eachother. There is no romance or sexual feelings within their actions, it a pure love neither ever thought they'd experience.
No Satori is not lying to his friends, he is not dating Issei. But he thinks if that red string was on his finger, it would lead right to Issei. Issei toys with some of his hair and taps his temple twice asking, "What's going on up here?"
Satori is quiet for a moment before chuckling and shaking his head, "Its stupid.."
"And thats different from everything else you say, how?" A light punch is delivered to Issei's gut making him laugh. But Satori's face turned to a solemn smile.
"I just.. wish it was you I fell inlove with." Issei lifts a brow to signal him to explain. Satori huffs and adjusts his head so he didn't have to look him in the eye, "Its just easy with you, I'm able to be fully.. me."
A hum came from above him and he felt a light kiss on his head over the hoodie and thr weight of Issei's own head, "I understand." They fell silent again and watched the movie which was now reaching an end. But that didn't matter as Satori's eyes grew heavy and his breaths even.
Two nights of good rest in the arms of the man who understood him more than he understood himself. Sweet dreams in the arms of the other half of his soul.
Makki didn't usually scale the side of Mattsun's house but tonight he wanted to surprise him. He has clenched in his teeth a bag of Mattsun's favorite chips and an old horror DVD in his hand. Once he reached the window he peaked in and went yo knock before he saw something.
It wasn't just Mattsun in the bed, something, someone, curled an arm around him and they were looking at eachother. He glanced over at the TV and saw Howl's Moving Castle and made a noise of confusion. When he looked back the sight made his heart drop.
Mattsun was kissing the person wearing the middle blockers favorite hoodie. He brought his hand up and gently head his face, his breath hitched slightly and he pulled back from the window seeing them move closer to one another.
He had to get out of here.
He climbed down the house faster than he should've and cursed quietly when he landed funky on his ankle. He ignored the pain and ran for a block until he reached his house. He silently made his way inside and to his room panting breaths as his eyebrows creased.
'Who was that?'
'Why are they wearing Mattsun's hoodie?'
'Why were they kissing?!'
Makki shook his head as he caught his breath and pondered over what he saw tonight. His heart continued to beat quickly, after his breathing had calmed and he scrunched his face. Mattsun hadn't mentioned being in a relationship or dating anyone. He would've told Makki at the very least.
'Would he?'
Makki pushes off his shoes and flops onto his bed hugging a pillow. He bites at some loose skin on his lip and curls against the pillow. His mind is racing and his chest is constricting in an odd way.
'Maybe it's something new?'
'Maybe its not even something yet?'
'Why do I even care so much?'
'Why am I–..'
"Why am I so upset.." He whispered into the dark of his room like it held the answers to life. All he got in response was his cat jumping on his bed and sitting infront of him. Meowing once she licked her paw and ignored her owner who at the moment was in crisis.
As if to get his attention she meowed again and payed at his back. When he turned over he saw her water bowl was empty and sighed as he got up to get her water. She happily followed twisting between his legs and rubbing her back along his calves.
He thought idly as he poured the water into the bowl and watched her drink. Once she was done she looked up at him and meowed again. He smirked picking her up and holding her close, "Can you tell me why I'm upset, marsh?"
She meowed again and he walked back over to his bed with the intention of going to sleep. Behind his eyelids the scene replayed over and over. The hoodie, Mattsun's least favorite movie, the kissing.
Over and over in his mind.
He tried to stop thinking about it but it just kept replaying, the gentleness of Mattsun's hand cupping the person's face, the slowness of the kisses and the intimacy of it all. His chest clenched again before his eyes snapped open and he sat up dislodging his cat ftom under.
"Holy fuck. I like Mattsun."
Notes:

Chapter Text
Makki sat in the dark car staring intently out the window at the house. Oikawa was whining in the back seat about being up so early as Iwaizumi rolled his eyes in the driver's seat. He had called them at 4:50 after not being able to fall asleep and begged them to come get him so they could stake out the raven's house. He see if they could find out who the mystery person was that Mattsun had been so lovingly sucking face with.
"Why do we have to he here for this!" Oikawa half whined half screeched flopping against Iwaizumi's seat. The smaller man grunted and gave his hand to the setter to hold.
"Because otherwise you wouldn't have woke up on time." Oikawa continues to pout silently in the back as he plays with his boyfriend's hand. Makki had stopped paying attention to him about five minutes into the stakeout. Iwaizumi looked over at Makki watching his intent stare before raising his eye brows.
"So you break it off with Ren-san?" He said trying to sound casual. Oikawa's face perked up and he looked at Makki too, still playing with his hand. Makki scrunched his face for a second and muttered a 'No' not taking his eyes off the house, "Then what are we doing right now..?"
Makki opened his mouth to answer but stopped abruptly. He swallowed some spit that had built in his mouth and glanced away from the house over to his friends. They both looked at him expectingly, wanting a reason as to why they were staking out Mattsun's house at five in the morning.
'Why are we here? Even if I find out who it is it won't change the fact that he's the one Mattsun is laying with, and kissing so sweetly. It won't change the fact that I'm with Ren. Nothing will change–'
The garage door slide up and an engine roared as Mattsun pulled out of his drive way, with a person on the back. He sped down the street and took a sharp left away from his house.
"Shit he was actually with someone.." Iwaizumi said astonished before both Makki and Oikawa started screeching at him.
"Drive dammit!!"
"I swear on everything I will take control of this vehicle!!"
"Ok, ok!!" He said back throwing his car in drive and jerking the car onto the road. He sped quickly to follow the man, but kept a far enough distance to avoid suspicion. At a red light they pulled up behind them and Makki leaned close to read the sticker on the back of the other person's helmet said.
In bold cursive letters 'Bitch' was written out with a heart on the end. There was also a cherry and kiss mark that looked faded. He scowled as he saw the man lean back slightly to stretch and Mattsun reached back and cupped the small of his back. Oikawa cooed at the motion making Makki redirect his scowl.
"What!? Look how cute that is!!" He huffed and sat back pouting again as the light turned green and the person wrapped their arms back around Mattsun's waist. After a little bit more of a drive Oikawa gasps in the back of the car. They stopped infront of where Mattsun pulled in and looked at the large gates of shiratorizawa.
The automated gate shut leaving them just on the outside barely able to see in. Oikawa rambled about 'enemy territory' and 'how dare Mattsun' as Makki unbuckled and hopped out of the car much to Iwaizumi's distress.
He looked in the gates to see the person– No, the man standing by the bike. His helmet was now clipped to the side and his head was covered with a hoodie — Mattsun's hoodie. Mattsun's hand curled around his waist and pulled him onto a hug that made Makki's stomach churn. He went to go back to the car, but when the man pecked the forehead of Mattsun's helmet he couldn't look away.
The man walked away with his arms wound tightly around himself, reminding Makki of the cold air biting at his own skin. He watched Mattsun still watching as the man entered the building only starting back up his bike after a couple of minutes.
'Shit!'
Makki sprinted to the car and jumped in the front seat, "Drive, Iwa!"
The man pulled out quickly and glanced worriedly at his friend. Oikawa leaned forward and rubbed his arm in a warming gesture as he crossed his arms to keep himself from puking, "Makki.. what happened."
That's when he felt the tears. That's when he felt his throat closing. That's when is lip wobbled as he tried to smile. He spoke in a low voice, like he was reciting a forbidden saying.
"I.. I like him.. so much.. and I've fucked up."
Satori had woken up slowly, a gentle tickle on his neck rousing him from his slumber. A sharp pinch made him jerk open his eyes to see Issei kissing the spot he bit. The man rose over him and kissed his forehead with a smile.
There were these odd domestic moments between the two. The slow and sweet that they both craved quietly until they were together again. Issei pecked his lips before springing up out of bed, leaving Satori to whine about being cold. The raven was always the morning person between the two.
"Come on, I gotta get you back to school!" He pulled off his shirt as he dug through his drawers. Satori smirked and wolf whistled at him before he turned around with clothes bunched in his hands. He wore a knowing smile but pointed accusingly at the man, "Don't fall back asleep."
He left the room leaving Satori to wrench himself up and out of bed. Usually it takes Semi screaming in his ear to perk him up in the mornings, but sweet kisses and sharp bites worked arguably just as well. He had tried to tell Semi that but was met with a scowl and disgusted, "I don't need to know what you and helmet head get up to in your free time."
He trudged down the stairs to see Issei's mom rushing around the kitchen muttering to herself before taking a long swig of coffee. She threw her cup in the sink and glanced to see Satori standing at the table. The tall woman walked over planted a kiss on his forehead and spoke quickly, "Goodmorning, sweetheart, sorry I can't talk long. I hope you slept well, tell Issei I said I love him and Goodmorning!"
She rushed out the door afterwards and he heard her car speed up at high speeds.
"Like mother like son." He muttered fondly as he grabbed the coffee pot and his mug, which stayed up in the Matsukawa's cabinet. He drank slowly as the sun started to rise shining across his face. His eyes squinted in disgust at the light as a quiet shutter sound flicked through the kitchen.
Issei stood at the bottom of the stairs with his phone out smirking at the scowling picture of Satori, "I hate you." The red head said with squinted eyes. Issei shrugged as he went to grab something to eat.
They were out the door soon after that and speeding down the early morning streets. It was freezing out, even with the jacket he had on. Once he got to the dorms he ran inside as quickly as he could shivering quietly. He walked up the stairs through the halls and bumped into someone while warming his pale hands.
"Oh!- oh, hey Waka-kun." He looks up at his friends face to see the ever unreadable expression he always seems to carry. The man nods to him and glances at his hands that were in constant movement to warm up. He never spoke early in the mornings something Satori realized after about a month of running into him before practice. So when he raised a brow inquiringly Satori had to make a guess on what he was asking.
"Oh my hands are just cold, its definitely almost winter!" He whispered in the quiet hallway. The spiker looked at the hands again before slowly raising his own hands to cover them. Warmth bursts through his nerves as he shivers.
Wakatoshi ran hot, something everyone knew. While people like Satori or Yamagata needed several layers to fend off the cold, Wakatoshi's did it naturally. Satori's face grew warm along with his hands and he laughed nervously as Wakatoshi looked up at him. His eyes seemed to scan him for a moment before landing on his neck.
But with the blink of his eyes he was back to looking at Satori. He opened his mouth slightly before shutting it again, he seemed to think for a moment before opening his mouth again, "..Would.. you like to go... somewhere this afternoon. With me."
Satori stared shocked first, at the fact, the man had spoken then at the words that were said. He smiled clumsily and nodded with an excitement, "Sure! We haven't gotten to hang out alot recently so that would be nice."
Wakatoshi nodded before dropping the hands he held reluctantly. He looked anxiously towards the stairs and Satori stepped out of his way so he could begin his jog. A smile stayed on his face until he finally reached his dorm and sighed sliding down the dorm door.
Semi came out of the bathroom, his hair and light make up done, and his nose buried in his phone. He merely glanced at the door to see his roommate sitting there with a stupid smile on his face, "You see Wakatoshi in the hall?"
A wistful sigh his response. Semi rolls His eyes and tosses his phone onto his bed grabbing his uniform for morning practice. He snorts when he gets a good look at the man still sitting against the door, "What'd he say about that?" He pointed to his own neck and raised a brow with a smirk.
"About what?" Satori finally snapped out of his state. He tilted his head slightly as Semi pointed to the bathroom and laughed. Satori got up and walked to look in the mirror, what greeted him with a long bruise trailing from the top of his neck to his Adam's apple. Obvious bite marks lined his neck like a necklace and made him grasp his neck.
Semi came in behind him and pulled out a makeup bag. He tried to contain his laughter as he attempted to cover the hickeys but if was no use. "Dumbass." Semi said as he finally finished covering them. Satori pouted and dropped his head against the bathroom counter.
Semi patted his back and spoke, "Alright come on, freaky, we gotta get to practice." Satori complained about the nickname all the way to the changing rooms as Semi laughed at him.
Bites. Bruises. Hickeys. They had covered Tendou's neck. It was almost vile how badly Wakatoshi had wanted to be the one who did that. His mind and heart screamed as he ran and ran. He believes Semi is right, Satori isn't in a relationship, atleast not a regular relationship. Which still gives him hope that the man still could be his.
'Please, let him be mine.'
