Work Text:
Emily let herself drop into the last open seat as the bus lurched into motion. Everyone around her was heading into work; she couldn’t wait to get home and crash out.
She closed her eyes for a moment, letting her head fall backwards and massaging away the strain that had accumulated in her neck over the long night’s shift. It hadn’t been particularly eventful —she had spent most of the night in the hospital pharmacy shadowing one of the technicians, watching her fill prescriptions for various departments— but her brain felt like mush, and her lower back hurt from standing around all night. Definitely not going into pharmacy, she mused ruefully.
A light vibration in her pocket drew her out of her thoughts. She pulled her mobile out and stared at the notification, mildly annoyed. What did her brother want now?
“Have u heard from mum recently??”
The young woman rolled her eyes. For being seven years older than her, Gordy was such a mummy’s boy sometimes.
“Texted on Sunday” she tapped out. “Said she was super busy, would call back later.”
“That was 3 days ago” came Gordy’s response. “Im going to try her work.”
Emily snorted. Good luck with that, she thought a bit pettily, then sighed. “Lmk what u find out” she texted back.
For all the secrecy around their mum’s work, it was pretty clear that she was involved in some kind of national security… something. Considering the weird stuff that had happened over the weekend, with the global phone hack thing that was still all over the news, it would be nice to know everything was okay.
She looked out at the bustling morning traffic heading North into the City, and let out another sigh.
At least he has a chance of getting a response…
