Work Text:
Sieun stared at the computer screen, the light reflecting in his dark, unreadable eyes. "DogDate," the site proclaimed, a cartoon pug winking suggestively next to the logo. A sound escaped his lips, quiet, but enough to disturb the dog sleeping on the armchair.
The dog, a scruffy mix with floppy ears and large paws, had shown up at Sieun's door a year ago, thin and cold.
Sieun, a man of few words and fewer emotions, had found himself unable to turn the beagle away. Now, they cohabited in a delicate balance: the dog, a bundle of chaotic energy, and Sieun, a solitary pre-med student buried in textbooks and anatomical diagrams.
The dog, who Sieun had unimaginatively dubbed "Dog," seemed listless lately. His usual boundless enthusiasm had dwindled into a dejected curl on the armchair, his tail barely twitching when Sieun filled his food bowl or tossed a worn tennis ball across the room. The change was noticeable, even to Sieun.
"Fine," he’d give this playdate finder app a shot. He clicked the "Create Profile" button. A questionnaire appeared, filled with inane inquiries about Dog's breed, favorite activities, and preferred playstyle. Sieun filled it out with clinical precision, adding a single photo of Dog looking mildly disgruntled at being forced to pose.
"There," he said, closing the laptop with a snap. "Happy now?" Dog, sensing the shift in Sieun's mood, uncurled from the armchair and nudged his head against Sieun's knee. Sieun sighed, reaching down to scratch behind Dog's ears.
Sieun scrolled through DogDate with a detached curiosity, akin to studying a foreign medical journal. The profiles blurred together: a parade of poodles with bows, chihuahuas in sweaters, and bulldogs with slobbering grins.
Suddenly, a sharp bark from Dog shattered the silence. Sieun glanced down to see Dog standing on his hind legs, front paws planted on the armrest, staring intently at the screen. The profile in question featured a golden retriever, its tongue lolling out in a cheerful grin. However, it was not the dog that caught Sieun's attention, but the man standing behind it, his arm draped casually around the retriever's neck.
The man was...striking, in a way that grated on Sieun's nerves. A wide, boyish smile, tousled military cut hair, and an air of effortless confidence that Sieun found both irritating and strangely compelling. He was about to click away, annoyed at the blatant self-promotion on a dog-centric site, when Dog chose that moment to leap onto his lap, causing his hand to inadvertently hit the "Match" button.
"No," Sieun hissed, grabbing the laptop before it could clatter to the floor. "Bad dog.”
Dog, oblivious to Sieun's frustration, licked his face in a slobbery display of affection, his tail wagging furiously. Sieun sighed, resigned to the fact that he was now, apparently, matched with a golden retriever and its infuriatingly handsome owner.
A notification popped up on the screen: Congratulations! You've matched with Lucky and his owner, Suho!
Sieun grimaced, rubbing his temples with his free hand. He wasn't one for idle chit-chat, much less with strangers he accidentally matched with and their overly enthusiastic dogs.
Before Sieun could contemplate deleting the app altogether, a message appeared in the chatbox:
Suho: Hey there! Looks like our dogs have good taste 😉
A winking emoji. Of course. Sieun resisted the urge to close his laptop.
Suho: So, what brings you to DogDate? Looking for a playmate for your pup?
He sighed. This guy's too friendly for his own good.
Sieun: Something like that.
Suho: Cool! Lucky here is always up for making new friends. Maybe we could arrange a meet-up sometime?
Sieun hesitated. He wasn't opposed to the idea, but the thought of interacting with Suho in person was...
Sieun: We'll see.
Suho, undeterred, continued his barrage of questions.
Suho: What's your dog's name, by the way?
Sieun: Dog.
Suho: Dog? That's...unique.
Sieun: It's practical.
Suho: Fair enough. Well, Lucky and I are off for a run. Maybe we'll run into you and...Dog sometime.
Sieun closed the laptop, a sigh escaping his lips. He wasn't sure what to make of Suho and his incessant winking, but he couldn't deny the flicker of curiosity that sparked within him.
+
Days later, Sieun sat hunched over his anatomy textbook, the scent of coffee and stale ramen noodles filling his cramped study space. Dog, curled up at his feet, snored softly, his rhythmic breathing a counterpoint to the hushed rustle of pages.
A ping from his laptop broke the silence. Suho again. Sieun debated ignoring it, but curiosity got the better of him.
Suho: Hey, just checking in, Dog’s human. How's it going?
Sieun debated ignoring the message, but a morbid curiosity got the better of him.
Sieun: Studying.
Suho: What are you studying, if you don't mind me asking?
Sieun hesitated for a moment.
Sieun: Pre-med.
Suho: Ah, the life of a pre-med student. Respect. Lucky and I are just chilling at the park. Good weather today.
Sieun did not know. He hadn't seen the sun in days.
Suho: So, I was wondering…
Here it comes, Sieun thought. The inevitable request for a meet-up.
Suho: What are your pronouns?
Sieun blinked, caught off guard by the unexpected question.
Sieun: He/him.
Suho: Cool, cool. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't assuming anything. It doesn't really matter for dog playdate purposes, but it's always good to be respectful, right?
Sieun found himself grudgingly agreeing. He appreciated Suho's attempt at inclusivity.
Sieun: Right.
Suho: Anyway, as I was saying... Lucky and I would love to meet up with you and Dog sometime. We could hit up the dog park, let them run around and burn off some energy. What do you say?
Sieun hesitated. He still doesn’t have the time for dog park socializing, especially with someone as...happy as Suho.
Sieun: I'll think about it.
Suho: No pressure! Just let me know when you're free. Lucky's always ready for a new friend.
Before Sieun could reply, another message popped up.
Suho: Actually, Dog is the first one he's matched with on the app.
Oh.
He didn't know how to respond to that. He closed the laptop, a sigh escaping his lips.
+
Sieun stared at the screen two days later, the ping of the new message jarring him out of his concentration.
Suho: Just finished walking Lucky. The park was packed today, man. Crazy amount of dogs.
Sieun tilted his head, a silent question mark floating in his mind. Why was he being updated on this? He'd agreed to think about a meet-up, not become a daily recipient of Suho’s dog-walking chronicles.
Sieun: Good.
A beat.
Suho: Yeah, it was good. Lucky loved it. He’s all tuckered out now, snoring like a champ. You should see him. It's adorable.
Sieun paused. Adorable? A word he hadn't used in years. He looked down at Dog, who was currently gnawing on a particularly stubborn shoe. Adorable was the last thing that came to mind.
Sieun: Okay.
Another beat. This time, longer.
Suho: Hey, so, I was thinking...
Sieun braced himself. Here it comes. The inevitable invitation.
Suho: You mentioned you're pre-med, right? That’s pretty cool. I’m in sports science, but I’m also into this whole nutrition thing. You know anything about it?
Sieun blinked. This was a surprising turn.
Sieun: Basic human biology.
Suho: Right, right. But I mean, like, supplements and stuff. Do you think protein shakes are really necessary? Or is it just marketing?
Sieun raised an eyebrow. This was a conversation?
Sieun: I don’t know.
Suho: Haha, fair enough. I’m trying to bulk up for boxing. You know, put on some muscle. Think protein shakes are the way to go?
Sieun glanced at his own lean frame, the product of years of focus and discipline.
Sieun: Depends on your diet.
Suho: Yeah, I’m trying to eat clean. But these protein shakes are like, super convenient. You know any good brands?
Sieun resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
Sieun: Don’t know.
Suho: Alright, protein shake expert. How about you? What do you eat to stay fueled for all that studying?
Sieun paused. He wasn’t used to discussing such mundane details of his life.
Sieun: Whatever is available.
Suho: Man, you gotta take care of yourself. You’re gonna be a doctor, right? Can’t be running on empty.
Sieun considered this. It was true. He was often so focused on his studies that he neglected basic self-care.
Sieun: I know.
A beat.
Suho: So, when are you and Dog free to hang out?
Sieun paused. He signed up for this to find a playdate for Dog, but for some reason, he’s not ready yet.
Sieun: I don’t know.
Suho: Aw, that sucks. Well, maybe next time? I’m always free.
The conversation ended abruptly there. Sieun stared at the screen for a moment, then closed his laptop.
+
Days later, Sieun was engrossed in a medical documentary, Dog curled up at his feet. His phone pinged, the insistent notification jarring him from his concentration.
It was DogDate. He’d never bothered to download the app, but Suho’s persistent messages had finally worn him down.
With a sigh, he opened the app. A new message from Suho was waiting.
Suho: Hey! So, I was thinking...
Sieun braced himself.
Suho: You seem pretty focused. Like, you’re always studying. Don’t you ever get bored?
Sieun paused the documentary.
Sieun: No.
Suho: Really? No hobbies? No chill time? Do you even sleep?
Sieun: I sleep.
Suho: Yeah, but like, what do you do for fun? Video games? Movies? Or are you one of those people who only lives for studying?
Sieun was taken aback by the directness of the question.
Sieun: I don’t know.
Suho: Come on, man, you gotta have something. Even Lucky has his toys.
Sieun glanced down at Dog, who was currently gnawing on a worn-out tennis ball.
Sieun: Dog has a ball.
Suho: Exactly! See? Even your dog knows how to have fun. Maybe you should take a page out of his book. You know, like, go for a walk or something. Fresh air does wonders.
Sieun felt a strange warmth creeping up his neck.
Sieun: I don’t have time.
Suho: You make time for studying, right? You can make time for a little fun. Besides, Lucky would love a playmate. And hey, maybe you’ll find a new study buddy. Who knows?
Sieun stared at the screen, a strange mix of emotions swirling within him. He’d signed up for DogDate for one reason: to find Dog a playmate. But now, as their conversation veered into unexpected territory, he found himself hesitating. Was it the thought of actually meeting Suho in person? Or was it something else entirely? He shook his head, dismissing the thought. It didn’t matter.
+
Another ping interrupted Sieun's focus the next morning. It was Suho again.
Suho: Hey, just checking in! How's the studying going? You're not pulling an all-nighter again, are you?
Sieun typed slowly:
Sieun: No.
Suho: Good! You know, taking breaks is important. I heard that studying in short bursts is actually more effective. Like, study for an hour, then take a 15-minute break. It helps with focus.
Sieun didn't respond.
Suho: So, about that playdate? I'm free on Saturday afternoon. Or maybe Sunday morning? Let me know what works for you!
Sieun hesitated before replying:
Sieun: I’m busy.
Suho: Ah, come on! A little fresh air never hurt anyone. And hey, you never know, you might even enjoy it. Maybe you’ll discover a hidden talent for frisbee or something.
Sieun didn’t answer. He’d made it clear he wasn’t interested, yet Suho persisted.
+
One afternoon, while Sieun was trying to decipher a particularly complex medical journal article, his phone buzzed again.
Suho: Hey, I was thinking about what you said about studying. Like, do you eat anything specific to help with brainpower? I mean, you're a genius, right? So, what's your secret food?
Sieun paused, a flicker of amusement crossing his face at the question.
Sieun: Ramen.
Suho: Ramen? Really? I thought you’d say something fancy, like caviar or truffle oil.
Sieun: It’s cheap and filling.
Suho: Well, it can’t be all bad if it fuels your brain. Maybe I should try it. Hey, wanna grab some ramen sometime? We can talk about study tips or something.
A familiar tightness crept into Sieun’s chest. He typed out a reply, his fingers hovering over the send button.
Sieun: I’m busy.
Suho: Come on, man. Just one meal. Please? For science! And Lucky needs a friend.
Sieun hesitated, the image of Dog's lonely eyes flashing in his mind. But the thought of actually meeting Suho filled him with a strange feeling.
Sieun: Maybe another time.
Suho: Fine, I’ll take that as a no. But seriously, let me know when you’re free. Lucky’s getting lonely.
+
Sieun was starting to think his phone was possessed. Another message from Suho popped up.
Suho: Hey, doc! What's your favorite kind of music? I'm into hip hop and EDM, but I'm open to anything.
Sieun: Classical.
Suho: Wow, that's unexpected. I bet you have great taste in everything, though. Speaking of taste, wanna grab coffee sometime? Then let our dogs play?
Sieun: I'm busy.
Suho: 😞
+
Sieun thinks the other man is definitely an extrovert, with the way he talks to him like he’s his long-lost friend.
Suho: Sieun, I just watched this funny dog movie. It reminded me so much of Lucky. You have to see it!
Sieun: I don't really watch movies.
Suho: What?! How can you not like movies? We have so much to talk about. Like our upcoming playdate, for instance...
Sieun: I'm busy.
Suho: 😞
+
Each chat felt like a conversation with a long-lost friend, leaving Sieun both baffled and strangely comforted.
Suho: Hey, doc! Just finished a sparring session. Feeling a bit beat up, but it's all part of the training process, right?
Sieun: Right.
Sieun wondered why Suho was sharing this with him, but he couldn't deny the curiosity that sparked within him.
Suho: You ever tried boxing? It's a great way to relieve stress.
Sieun: No.
Suho: You should! It's a good workout, and it's pretty fun to punch things sometimes.
Sieun: I prefer a more intellectual approach to stress relief.
Suho: Oh yeah? Like what?
Sieun: Studying.
Suho: Alright, you win this round. But I still think you should come to the dog park sometime.
Sieun: I'm busy.
Suho: 😞
+
Sieun marveled at Suho's ability to chat away as if they'd known each other for years, while Sieun struggled to string together a coherent sentence.
Suho: I'm making dinner. Steak and veggies. What are you having?
Sieun: Ramen.
Suho: Again? You need to take better care of yourself, doc. You can't run on instant noodles alone.
Sieun: I'm fine.
Suho: If you say so. So about that playdate?
Sieun: I'm busy.
Suho: 😞
Sieun remained focused on his studies and responsibilities, not realizing that Suho was slowly but surely chipping away at his defenses, one message at a time.
+
Days turned into a week. The pattern was the same: Suho would message, Sieun would respond with clipped answers, and the conversation would inevitably circle back to the dog playdate.
One afternoon, as Sieun stepped into his apartment, exhausted from a long day of lectures, his phone pinged like clockwork.
Suho: Woof! How’s my favorite pre-med student doing?
Sieun: ?
Suho: Woof! It's a dog pun. You know, like, "woof" as in "wolf"? Get it? Because you're a lone wolf, studying all the time?
Sieun: Okay.
Suho: You know, you should smile more. You sound like a robot.
Sieun was taken aback. How could Suho possibly know if he smiled or not?
Sieun: How do you know I don't smile? You haven't even seen me.
Suho: Exactly. That’s why you should send me a pic. So I can see if you’re as serious-looking as your texts. And also, I’m curious about Dog’s dad. You know, for science.
Sieun: I don’t need to.
Suho: Come on, man, it’ll be fun. I promise not to laugh at your weird serious face.
Sieun hesitated. He didn’t want to give Suho any satisfaction, but the thought of Dog possibly having a playmate was tempting. With a sigh, he agreed.
Sieun: Fine.
After a few minutes, Sieun found himself in front of his small apartment mirror, feeling self-conscious. He took a deep breath and snapped a photo.
In the picture, he was sitting on the couch, Dog curled up in his lap. His expression was neutral, devoid of any emotion. He sent the photo to Suho.
Sieun stared at the phone screen, the blank white space where Suho's reply should be. A wave of doubt washed over him. Maybe he shouldn't have sent the picture.
Just as he was about to turn off his phone, a notification popped up.
Suho: Woah, you have really pretty eyes.
Sieun was speechless. He didn’t know how to respond to such blatant compliment.
Sieun: Thanks.
Suho: Seriously, you look cute.
What.
Suho: Want to see a pic of me too?
Before Sieun could reply, a photo popped up on his screen. It was Suho, wearing a boxing uniform, his muscles rippling beneath the fabric.
Sieun stared at the photo. He'd already seen Suho’s face in the profile picture with Lucky, but seeing his eyes up close was different. There was a warmth in them, a depth that was unexpected. The contrast between his rugged, athletic appearance and the softness in his eyes was intriguing. Sweat glistened on his face, a testament to his physical exertion.
Sieun felt a strange mix of emotions, but he pushed them aside.
Suho: So, what do you think?
Sieun blinked, snapping out of his reverie. He typed a reply without thinking.
Sieun: You look like you could bench press a small car.
Suho: Thanks! I've been working out a lot lately.
Sieun: It shows.
Suho: You think so?
Sieun: You could say that.
There was a pause, then:
Suho: You know, you're pretty bold for a guy who won't even meet up with me.
Sieun furrowed his brow, confused.
Sieun: What do you mean?
Suho: Oh, nothing. Just saying.
Sieun: I don't understand.
Suho: It's okay. I'll explain it to you when we meet up.
Sieun: I'm not sure when that will be. I'm busy.
Suho: Aw, come on. Don't be like that.
Sieun: Like what?
Suho: You know what. Just say yes to the dog park.
Sieun sighed. He wasn't sure what Suho was implying, but he didn't like it. He needed to change the subject.
Sieun: So, what kind of protein shakes do you drink?
Suho's response came quickly, accompanied by a laughing emoji.
Suho: You know, most people would ask about my hobbies, or what kind of music I like. But you're focused on my protein intake and weightlifting abilities. 😂
Sieun: Those are relevant topics for a dog owner.
Suho: Are they now?
Sieun: Yes. A dog owner needs to be physically fit to handle their dog.
Suho: Is that why you're so interested in my physique?
Sieun: I'm not interested in your physique.
Suho: Sure you're not.
Sieun: This conversation is pointless.
Suho: Maybe. Or maybe you're just afraid to admit that you find me attractive.
Sieun's fingers hovered over the keyboard. He wasn't used to this kind of banter.
Sieun: That's irrelevant.
Suho: Is it?
Sieun: Yes.
Suho: Okay, okay. I'll stop teasing you. For now. But seriously, when are we going to meet up?
Sieun took a deep breath, a rare flicker of emotion passing over his face.
Sieun: I'm still busy.
He closed his phone, shutting down the conversation before it could take another unexpected turn.
+
The next day, Sieun was in the lab, the sterile scent of disinfectant clinging to his scrubs. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced down to see a notification from DogDate. He hadn't even thought about the app since his last conversation with Suho.
Opening the app, he saw a photo from Suho. It was Lucky, lying on a stainless steel examination table at the vet's office, a syringe hovering near his haunches. A small bandage was taped to his leg.
Suho: Looks like someone's not having a good day. 😔
Sieun felt a surprising wave of sympathy for the golden retriever. He typed a reply.
Sieun: What happened?
Suho: Just routine vaccinations. But he's not a fan of needles.
Sieun: I see.
Suho: Yeah. He's being a brave boy, though. He even let the vet give him a treat afterward.
Sieun: That's good.
Suho: Yeah. It is. How about you? How's your day going?
Sieun hesitated. He could tell Suho was trying to make conversation, but he wasn't sure how to respond.
Sieun: Busy.
Suho: I figured. But you're taking breaks, right? You need to take care of yourself, too.
Sieun was taken aback by Suho's concern.
Sieun: I am.
Suho: Good. Hey, maybe we could meet up sometime after Lucky recovers. I'm sure he'd love to play with Dog.
Sieun paused. He still wasn't sure if he was ready to meet Suho in person, but the thought of Lucky and Dog playing together was tempting.
Sieun: Maybe.
Suho: Okay, cool. I'll keep you posted on Lucky's recovery.
Sieun closed the app. Maybe meeting Suho wouldn't be so bad after all.
+
That night, Sieun sat at his small kitchen table, a plate of instant ramen steaming in front of him. Dog whined at his feet, his bowl empty and his eyes pleading for more food. Sieun sighed, reaching for the bag of dog food.
His phone pinged with a notification from DogDate.
Suho: Hey! So, my boxer buddies just invited me out tonight. Feeling a little conflicted.
Sieun paused, a piece of ramen halfway to his mouth.
Sieun: Why?
Suho: Well, I'm not sure what to do with Lucky. He gets separation anxiety when I'm gone for too long. What do you do with Dog when you go on a night out with your friends?
Sieun frowned.
Sieun: I don't have friends.
A beat of silence. Then,
Suho: No friends? So you only have a girlfriend then? Or boyfriend?
Sieun stared at the screen, a flicker of confusion in his eyes.
Sieun: No.
Suho: So I'm the only one you talk to?
Sieun: Does it count if it's through a dog app?
A laughing emoji appeared on the screen.
Suho: You're funny, Dog's owner. 😂 You know, I barely talk to anyone unless they talk to me first. They probably think I'm always tough or something.
Sieun: You are special, I guess.
Suho: Oh, so you think I'm special?
Sieun hesitated. He hadn't meant it in that sense.
Sieun: Different.
Suho: Different is good. You're different too, you know. I like that.
Sieun frowned.
Sieun: How am I different?
Suho: You're kinda quiet, but not in a boring way. You're serious, but you've got that dry humor thing going on. And you're not afraid to speak your mind, even if it's a little blunt.
Sieun didn't know how to respond to that.
Sieun: I just say what I think.
Suho: And I like that about you. It's so raw. Most people are too scared to be honest.
Sieun felt something in his stomach. He wasn't used to this kind of attention.
Sieun: I'm just being practical.
Suho: Yeah, for sure. But hey, practicality isn't everything, right? There's room for kindness, being cool to people, and...oh, I don't know...trying new things. You ever think about that?
Sieun scoffed.
Sieun: I don't have time for that stuff.
Suho: You should make time. Life's too short to be stuck in the same old routine. Trust me.
Sieun sighed. He knew Suho was right, but he didn't know how to change his ways.
Sieun: I'll think about it.
Suho: That's all I ask. Hey, I gotta go. My friends are waiting. We'll talk later, yeah?
Sieun didn’t bother to reply.
+
Later that night, Sieun lay in bed, Dog curled up on his usual spot at the foot of the mattress. He was just drifting off to sleep when his phone buzzed, the vibration startling Dog awake. Groaning, Sieun reached for the device, his eyes squinting at the bright screen.
Suho: Just wanted to say...you're pawsome! Get it? Pawsome? Like, awesome, but with paws? Because we're talking about dogs? I'm so funny.
Sieun blinked, a wave of confusion washing over him. He glanced at the time. 2:37 AM.
Sieun: Are you drunk?
Suho: Maybe a little tipsy, but that doesn't make my dog puns any less hilarious. You should hear my cat jokes though, they're purr-ty good.
Sieun sighed, rubbing his temples.
Sieun: Go to sleep.
Suho: You got it, boss. But first, one more pun: I'm mutts about you! Okay, I'm done now. Good night.
The silence from himself was deafening. He was clueless about what to say, his stomach churning with a mix of nerves and something else.
+
But then Suho went radio silent too, leaving Sieun even more confused.
+
A day passed, then another. Sieun found himself checking his phone more often than usual, a sliver of disappointment wedging itself into his normally stoic demeanor. He wasn't sure why he cared, but the silence from Suho felt...heavy.
He tried to bury himself in his work, a futile attempt to distract himself.
Then, one morning, a photo appeared on his screen. Suho, beaming at the camera against a backdrop of turquoise water and pristine sand. The caption read: "In Jeju, visiting my halmeoni! Sorry for the radio silence – no signal at her place."
Sieun stared at the photo, a mixture of relief and something else he couldn't quite name. He typed a reply, his fingers lingering over the keys: "Looks nice."
Suho's reply came quickly.
Suho: Thanks! Can’t take a pic of Lucky. Left him with a friend. You can't bring dogs on the plane to Jeju, not for this long. Dumb rule, if you ask me.
Sieun: Right.
Sieun wondered why Suho felt the need to share this with him. They were barely acquaintances.
Suho: Already miss the little furball, though. He's probably tearing up my friend's apartment as we speak.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Sieun's lips. Suho's attachment to his dog was oddly endearing.
Sieun: Probably.
Suho: You ever miss Dog when you're out?
Sieun: Sometimes.
Suho: I bet Dog's a good boy, though. Doesn't get into too much trouble, does he?
If only Suho knew.
Sieun: He's manageable.
Suho: Man, I can't wait to get back and take Lucky for a run on a nearby beach. He loves chasing waves.
Sieun: Good for him.
Sieun found himself surprisingly envious. The idea of spending a carefree day at the beach with Dog sounded...appealing.
Suho: You ever take Dog to the beach?
Sieun: No.
Suho: You should! It's the best. Sand between your toes, the sound of the waves...it's the perfect way to de-stress.
Sieun considered this. Maybe a change of scenery wouldn't be so bad.
Sieun: Maybe.
Suho: You should! Hey, maybe we could all go together sometime. You, me, Dog, and Lucky. It would be amazing!
Sieun's fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Sieun: We'll see.
+
The following day, Sieun was hunched over his anatomy textbook, the scent of coffee mingling with the faint odor of antiseptic from his recent lab shift. His phone buzzed, a text from his next-door neighbor, Young-yi. They weren't exactly friends, just exchanged the occasional text about apartment matters.
Young-yi: Sieun, you busy?
Sieun furrowed his brow, a sense of unease creeping up his spine. He wasn't used to unsolicited texts from Young-yi, especially not ones that weren't about leaking faucets or noisy neighbors.
Sieun: Why?
Young-yi: Wanna go for a walk? I'm at the park.
Sieun's confusion deepened. He wasn't one for spontaneous outings, and Young-yi knew it.
Sieun: Why?
Young-yi: My friend left me with her dog and it needs a playmate. You have a dog right?
Sieun was about to decline, but then Young-yi sent a photo. The dog in the picture was a golden retriever, its tongue lolling out in a familiar, cheerful grin.
Sieun blinked, a wave of disbelief washing over him. The dog looked eerily similar to Lucky, Suho's dog.
Young-yi: So? You in?
Sieun hesitated for a moment. But then again, Dog could use the exercise.
Sieun: Fine. I'll be there in 10.
+
Sieun quickly showered and dressed, clipping Dog's leash onto his collar. The beagle, sensing an outing, pranced excitedly around Sieun's legs, nearly tripping him several times.
The park was a short walk from their apartment complex. As they approached, Sieun spotted Young-yi sitting on a bench, her back to him. The golden retriever was sprawled out at her feet, panting contentedly. Sieun's heart gave a lurch. The dog was definitely Lucky.
"Young-yi," Sieun called out, his voice a gruff monotone.
Young-yi turned, her face breaking into a wide smile. "Sieun! You made it!" She patted the bench beside her. "Come sit."
Sieun hesitated for a moment, then reluctantly sat down. Dog, meanwhile, had already made a beeline for Lucky. The two dogs sniffed each other excitedly, tails wagging furiously.
"So," Sieun said, his eyes fixed on the dogs, "this is your friend's dog?"
"Yup," Young-yi chirped. "Isn't he a cutie?"
Sieun nodded.
"So, what's your dog's name?" Young-yi asked, tilting her head.
"Dog," Sieun replied flatly.
Young-yi giggled. "That's original."
Sieun shrugged. "It's practical."
"Ya, you know, you're not as scary as you look. You just need to loosen up a little. Have some fun!”
"Fun isn't exactly a priority for me."
"Well, it should be," Young-yi countered. "Everyone needs a little fun in their lives."
Sieun glanced at Dog and Lucky, who were now engaged in a playful wrestling match. Maybe Young-yi was right. Maybe he did need to loosen up a bit.
"Maybe," he conceded.
A comfortable silence settled between them as they watched their dogs play. Sieun, his curiosity piqued, decided to steer the conversation towards the topic on his mind.
"So," he began, feigning nonchalance, "this friend of yours...the one who owns Lucky...what's he like?"
Young-yi's eyes lit up, a mischievous glint in them. "Oh, Suho? He's awesome! We're classmates in sports science. He's like the coolest guy I know."
"Cool?" Sieun echoed, raising an eyebrow.
Sieun's interest was piqued despite himself. He found it oddly intriguing that someone as bubbly as Young-yi considered Suho the "coolest guy she knows."
"Yeah!" Young-yi exclaimed. "He's super athletic, always up for an adventure, and he's got this infectious energy that just makes you want to be around him."
Sieun listened intently, a strange mix of skepticism and fascination swirling within him. He couldn't quite reconcile Young-yi's description with the Suho he knew from their online exchanges.
"He's actually smart in his own way," Young-yi continued, oblivious to Sieun's internal conflict. "He ace our physical exams, even though he spends most of his time at the gym or hanging out with Lucky."
Sieun found himself nodding along.
"And he's got the biggest heart," Young-yi added, her voice softening. "He's always there for his friends, always willing to lend a helping hand.”
A warmth spread through Sieun's chest, a feeling he couldn't quite decipher. He shook his head, trying to dispel the unfamiliar sensation.
"I guess he sounds alright," Sieun conceded, a hint of curiosity lacing his tone.
Young-yi's smile widened. "More than alright, trust me. You guys would totally click. I should introduce you sometime."
Sieun nodded, a noncommittal hum escaping his lips. He didn't mention his ongoing conversations with Suho on DogDate. It felt like a secret, a private connection he wasn't ready to share just yet.
"Yeah, maybe," he replied, his eyes drifting back to the dogs.
Young-yi, oblivious to Sieun's internal conflict, continued to sing Suho's praises. Sieun found himself listening with a mix of amusement and a growing intrigue.

As the afternoon wore on, the dogs tired themselves out, their playful wrestling turning into contented cuddles in the shade of a large oak tree. Sieun pulled out his phone, snapping a photo of the two dogs nestled together. He decided to send it to Suho with a simple caption: "Dog found a friend."
The reply came a few hours later, just as Sieun was settling down for another round of studying. His phone buzzed, and he saw Suho's name flashing on the screen.
Suho: What??? Like??? How???
Sieun blinked, a flicker of amusement crossing his face. It was almost cute how flustered Suho seemed.
Sieun: How what?
Suho: How did Dog and Lucky meet up?!
Sieun: At the park.
Suho: WAIT. You're at the park...with Lucky?
Sieun: Yes. And with Dog.
Suho: But... but how?
Sieun: Long story.
Suho: Tell me! I'm freaking out here!
Sieun: Your friend Young-yi is my neighbor. She had Lucky.
Sieun could almost hear Suho's jaw dropping through the phone.
Suho: Woah. Small world, huh?
Sieun: Apparently.
Suho: So, you met my dog before me. That's...interesting.
Sieun: Yes.
Sieun felt a warmth spreading through his chest. This was turning out to be a much more interesting interaction than he had anticipated.
Suho: So, what do you think of him? Of Lucky, I mean.
Sieun: He's...energetic.
Suho: That's one way to put it. He's a little terror sometimes, but I love him to bits.
A small smile played on Sieun's lips. Suho's affection for his dog was evident even through text.
Sieun: He seems happy.
Suho: Yeah, he's a social butterfly. I'm glad he made a friend. Thanks for looking out for him.
Sieun: It was no problem. Dog needed the exercise.
Sieun paused, then added:
Sieun: He seemed to like Lucky.
A wave of satisfaction washed over him as he saw Suho's reply:
Suho: Yeah? Well, Lucky's got good taste. 😉
Sieun wasn't sure how to reply to the comeback of the wink, his fingers hovering awkwardly over the keyboard. But before he could formulate a response, another message popped up.
Suho: So, now that our dogs have broken the ice, maybe it's time their owners did the same, huh?
Sieun exhaled slowly. He had to admit, Suho's persistence was amusing.
Sieun: You're in Jeju.
Suho: Yeah, but I'll be back soon. How about we plan a double date when I get back? For the dogs, of course.
Sieun's lips twitched into a half-smile.
Sieun: I'll think about it.
+
Days passed, filled with lectures, rounds at the lab, and the occasional game of fetch with Dog. Sieun found himself checking his phone more often than he cared to admit, a silent anticipation growing within him.
One afternoon, a familiar buzz broke the monotony of his studies.
Suho: Back in town! Lucky's going crazy with excitement. Think it's time for that playdate?
Sieun, despite his best efforts to remain stoic, felt a flutter of anticipation. He typed a reply, keeping his tone as neutral as possible.
Sieun: Good for him.
Suho: Aww, don't be like that. Come on, let's meet up. Dog park, coffee shop, wherever. Your pick.
Sieun hesitated. He wasn't quite ready to face Suho in person, the playful banter online feeling safer somehow.
Sieun: I'm busy.
Suho: 😞😞😞
Sieun stared at the screen, the three pout emojis staring back at him with a forlorn intensity. He wondered why he was so hesitant. It was just a meet-up, after all. But a part of him, a part he rarely acknowledged, was afraid. Afraid of what Suho might think of him, afraid of saying something stupid, afraid of revealing the strange attraction he felt towards the other man.
+
The next day, another message popped up.
Suho: Hey there, Dog's human. How's it going?
Sieun: Studying.
Suho: Still? You need a life, man.
Sieun: I have a life.
Suho: One that revolves around textbooks and anatomical diagrams? Come on, live a little!
Sieun's lips twitched.
Sieun: No.
Suho: 😞😞😞
+
A few days later, another message.
Suho: Alright, I'm getting desperate here. Lucky's been moping around, missing his new friend. I'm starting to think you're avoiding me.
Sieun's heart skipped a beat. Was he avoiding Suho? He wasn't sure.
Sieun: I'm not avoiding you.
Suho: Then prove it. Let's meet up. Please?
Sieun exhaled slowly. Suho's persistence was wearing him down. He found himself typing a reply, his fingers trembling slightly.
Sieun: No.
Suho: 😞😞😞
He couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. He wasn't trying to hurt Suho's feelings, but the thought of meeting up still filled him with a nervous energy he couldn't quite explain.
It's not that I don't want to see him, Sieun thought to himself, it's just... He couldn't quite put his finger on it. It was a strange mix of apprehension and anticipation, a feeling he'd never experienced before.
+
The following night, the buzz of his phone startled him awake. This time, it wasn't a chat, but a photo.
Suho stood in front of a mirror, flexing his arm, his bicep bulging impressively. His shorts rode low on his hips, revealing a sliver of tanned skin and toned muscle.
Sieun felt a flush creep up his neck, his eyes drawn to the image despite his best efforts to look away. Suho held up a peace sign, a playful grin on his face.
Suho: Just finished a run with Lucky. Feeling good!
Sieun stared at the photo for a moment longer than necessary before typing a reply.
Sieun: Where's Lucky?
Suho: At room, catching his breath. How about you and Dog? Wanna join us for a run sometime?
Sieun quickly typed his response.
Sieun: No.
Suho: Ok, ok. But I'll keep asking.
Sieun closed his phone, Suho's sweaty image lingering in his mind. He shook his head, trying to focus on his studies, but the distraction remained.
+
The next day, Sieun was immersed in his anatomy textbook, the intricate diagrams of the human body demanding his full attention. Suddenly, his phone vibrated, a notification from Suho flashing on the screen. He reluctantly pulled his focus away from his studies, unlocking his phone with a sigh.
Suho had sent him a close-up photo of his wrist, smooth and tanned.
Suho: I'm thinking of getting a tattoo. Maybe a small paw print on my wrist. What do you think?
Sieun blinked, a bit surprised by the sudden intimacy of the image. He typed a reply, his fingers moving mechanically.
Sieun: It's your body.
A moment later, another photo appeared. This time, it was a shot of Suho's toned abdomen, muscles flexing subtly beneath his skin.
Suho: Or maybe here, to hide it. Should I?
Sieun's breath hitched in his throat. He stared at the photo, his mind reeling. He knew he should look away, but he couldn't tear his eyes from the image.
Sieun: I'm not sure.
Suho: Wanna come with me to the tattoo shop, then dog park?
Sieun: I have to study.
Suho: Always studying. Alright, I'll let you get back to it. But don't forget to take breaks, doc.
Sieun closed his phone, a sigh escaping his lips. Suho's blatant chats was starting to wear him down, his carefully constructed walls crumbling a little more with each message. He tried to focus on his studies, but the image of Suho's abs, the cheekiness in his messages, refused to fade from his mind.
+
While Sieun was walking across campus, his phone buzzed again. It was Suho, this time sending a close-up photo of his hands. They were rough and calloused, with long, nimble fingers.
Suho: These hands aren't just for petting Lucky, you know.
Sieun frowned, confused.
Sieun: What are they for then?
Suho: Oh, you know. All sorts of things.
Sieun stared at the screen, trying to decipher the hidden meaning in Suho's message. He was missing something, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Sieun: Like what?
Suho: Nevermind.
Sieun stared at his phone, the message replaying in his mind. It took him a few minutes, but then it hit him like a bolt of lightning.
Suho was flirting.
A wave of heat washed over Sieun. He quickly shoved his phone back into his pocket, his heart pounding in his chest.

When he returned to his apartment that evening, he found Young-yi waiting by his door.
"Heyyy!" She greeted him with her usual enthusiasm. "How was your day?"
"Fine," Sieun replied, his voice a monotone as he fumbled for his keys.
"So, I was talking to my friend earlier, you know, Lucky’s owner?" Young-yi began, a sly grin spreading across her face. "He was asking me all sorts of questions about you."
Sieun froze, his keys halfway into the lock. "Really?" he managed to say, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Yeah," Young-yi giggled. "He's totally curious about you. It's kinda cute, actually."
Sieun swallowed, his heart pounding even harder. "What did you tell him?"
"Oh, you know, the truth," Young-yi shrugged. "That you're actually a really nice guy, even though you act all grumpy and serious. I told him you guys would totally hit it off if you just gave each other a chance."
Sieun's grip tightened on his keys. "And what did he say?"
"He said he agrees," Young-yi replied, her grin widening. "So, I was thinking, maybe I should set up a hangout date for you two. You know, so you can officially meet and get to know each other."
Sieun shook his head quickly, a wave of panic washing over him. "No, that's not necessary."
"Why not?" Young-yi asked, her brow furrowing in confusion.
"I'm...busy," Sieun mumbled, pushing past her and into his apartment.
Once inside, he leaned against the door, his chest heaving. He could hear Young-yi's voice fading as she walked away, but all he could focus on was the erratic thumping of his own heart.
He wasn't sure what was happening to him, but one thing was clear: Suho was messing with his carefully constructed emotional walls, and he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep them up.
+
Dog bounded towards Sieun, his tail a blur of excited wagging. The beagle nudged his head against Sieun's leg, a whine escaping his throat, his eyes pleading for attention. Sieun knelt down, scratching behind Dog's ears and accepting a wet, slobbery kiss on the cheek. Despite the turmoil in his mind, the simple act of caring for his dog brought a sense of grounding.
As Sieun prepared Dog's dinner, his thoughts drifted back to Suho. He replayed their recent exchanges in his mind, trying to decipher the hidden meanings behind Suho's words and actions.
A sudden buzz cut through his thoughts. Another message from Suho. Sieun opened his phone, bracing himself for another shirtless selfie or cheeky remark. But instead, he was greeted with a close-up photo of two dark, gleaming objects.
Suho: These reminded me of your eyes.
Sieun stared at the photo, his brow furrowed in confusion. Were those...coffee beans?
Sieun: Coffee beans?
Suho: Yup. Deep, dark, and full of secrets. Just like you.
Heat crept up Sieun’s neck. He wasn't sure if Suho was intentionally flirting or simply making an observation, but either way, the effect was the same.
Sieun: Thanks?
Suho: You know, they say the eyes are the window to the soul. Or that’s what halmeoni used to tell me.
Sieun, still perplexed, decided to play along, his curiosity outweighing his confusion.
Sieun: What are you trying to say?
Suho: Just that I'm... intrigued.
Sieun: By coffee beans?
Suho: By you.
The bluntness of Suho's reply caught Sieun off guard. He wasn't used to such direct compliments, especially not from someone he'd never met in person.
Sieun: You don't even know me.
Suho: I'm learning. And I like what I'm seeing so far.
Sieun's fingers hovered over the keyboard, unsure of how to respond. He was out of his depth here, the usual clinical detachment he relied on failing him.
He decided to leave the message unanswered, but his phone buzzed again.
Suho: You sleeping already? Goodnight, doc. Sweet dreams. Dream of me, just kidding.
Sieun felt his face heat up once again. He quickly turned off his phone, hoping to escape the onslaught of emotions Suho seemed to effortlessly evoke. But even as he closed his eyes, he couldn't help but imagine the playful grin on Suho's face, the warmth in his eyes, and the unspoken promise in his words.
+
The next morning, even though it was a Sunday, Sieun was already hunched over his desk, textbooks and notes spread out before him. The soft glow of his desk lamp illuminated the room, casting long shadows that danced with the flickering candlelight on his desk. Suddenly, a notification sound broke the silence of the room. It was Suho again.
Sieun's heart skipped a beat as he unlocked his phone. A selfie of Suho filled the screen, a wide grin on his face. He held a steaming cup of coffee in one hand, and the golden retriever, Lucky, was nestled beside him, its head resting on Suho's thigh.
Suho: Good morning, sleepyhead! What are you up to today?
Sieun blinked, surprised by the unexpected greeting. He typed a reply, his fingers moving almost mechanically.
Sieun: Studying.
Suho: Of course. Hey, can I ask you a favor?
Sieun hesitated. He wasn't sure what Suho could possibly want.
Sieun: What?
Suho: Can you send me a photo of you holding Dog close to you?
Sieun frowned, his confusion growing.
Sieun: Why?
Suho: Just... to see something.
A beat of hesitation passed before Sieun found himself reaching for his phone. He snapped a quick photo with Dog, the beagle nestled comfortably in his arms, his head resting against Sieun's chest. Sieun sent the picture without a second thought.
Suho's response came almost immediately.
Suho: 😍😍😍
Sieun's ears burned.
Sieun: Hey, stop that.
Suho: Can't help it. You and Dog are just too cute.
Sieun's fingers hovered over the keyboard, unsure of how to respond. He found his heart racing, a feeling he usually only experienced during high-stakes exams.
Sieun: You're being weird.
Suho: Why? Don't you like it when I flirt with you?
Sieun's fingers hovered over the keyboard, unsure of how to respond.
Sieun: It's...unnecessary.
Suho: Unnecessary, huh? So you're saying you don't find me attractive?
Sieun feels his pulse racing. He wasn't used to being this flustered.
Sieun: That's not what I said.
Suho: Then what did you say?
Sieun: What.
Suho: You chat cutely when you're flustered, you know that?
Sieun: I'm not cute.
Suho: Whatever you say, doc.
Before he can respond, Suho already messaged him again.
Suho: But seriously, I'm really glad our dogs brought us together. I'm having a lot of fun talking to you.
Sieun didn’t bother to reply, but he felt a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
He couldn't remember the last time he'd had this much fun talking to someone, too.
+
Sieun found himself lost in a rabbit hole of online research, his fingers tapping away at his keyboard as he typed search queries like "is it normal to develop strange feelings for someone you've only talked to online?" and "signs you're attracted to someone you haven't met." He scrolled through countless articles and forum posts, his brow furrowed in concentration.
The rational part of his brain, the part that had been meticulously trained in the scientific method, scoffed at the idea. This was ridiculous. He barely knew Suho. How could he possibly be developing feelings for him? It was just a silly infatuation, a fleeting distraction from his studies.
Yet, he couldn't deny the warmth that spread through his chest whenever Suho's name popped up on his screen. The anticipation he felt before opening each new message. The lingering smile that played on his lips after their conversations.
He wasn't naive. He knew that online interactions could create a false sense of intimacy, a distorted reflection of reality. Yet, he couldn't deny the undeniable pull he felt towards Suho, the way his pulse raced at the mere sight of his name on the screen.
Just as he was about to close his phone and return to his textbooks, his phone buzzed with a new notification.
It was Suho. Again.
Sieun hesitated for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest. He wasn't sure if he was ready for another round of Suho's playful teasing. But curiosity got the better of him, and he unlocked his phone.
The screen lit up with a photo of Suho, fresh out of the shower, a towel slung low around his waist. His hair was damp and tousled, water droplets clinging to his skin. Steam fogged the mirror behind him, giving the image a hazy, intimate quality.
Suho: Just finished giving Lucky a bath. He's not thrilled about it, as you can see.
Sieun's eyes widened as he took in the photo. Suho's toned physique was on full display, his muscles glistening under the bathroom lights. Lucky sat patiently by his feet, a quizzical expression on his face.
He quickly averted his eyes, a sense of guilt washing over him. He wasn't supposed to be looking at Suho like this. They were just friends, or at least, friends of dogs. But the image of Suho was seared into his mind. He couldn't deny the strange flutter in his stomach, a feeling he'd never experienced before.
Sieun cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure. "Lucky looks happy," he typed back, deliberately avoiding any mention of Suho's appearance.
Suho: Not as happy as I am right now.
Sieun's fingers paused over the keyboard. He wasn't sure how to respond to that.
Sieun: You should dry your hair.
Suho: Why? Are you worried I'll catch a cold? How sweet.
Sieun felt his ears burning up again.
Sieun: Just a suggestion.
Suho: I appreciate the concern, doc. But I'm more concerned with... warming you up.
Before he can reply, another message already popped up on his screen.
Suho: Just kidding, doc! Take care today.
Sieun closed his phone, a frustrated sigh escaping his lips. Suho was relentless, and Sieun was quickly realizing that his defenses were no match for the other man's charm. He tried to focus back on his studies, but the image of Suho, towel-clad and grinning, refused to leave his mind.
+
In the days that followed, Suho's playful and often suggestive messages continued to flood Sieun's inbox. Each one pushed the boundaries a little further, testing the waters of Sieun's patience.
One morning, as he was reviewing lecture notes, a photo of Suho's bare back appeared on his screen.
Suho: Just finished a workout. Feeling a little sore. Care to give me a massage?
Sieun stared at the photo, his eyes lingering on the defined muscles and the beads of sweat glistening on Suho's skin. He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry.
Sieun: I'm not a masseuse.
Suho: Aww, come on, doc. I'm sure you have magic hands.
+
Later that evening, as Sieun was preparing dinner, another message appeared.
Suho: I had a dream about you last night.
Sieun's heart skipped a beat.
Sieun: Oh.
Suho: Yeah. You were wearing your white coat, and you had this stethoscope around your neck. You looked so...professional. And sexy.
Sieun nearly dropped his spatula. He wasn't sure how to respond to that.
Sieun: I was working?
Suho: In my dream, you were definitely working. Overtime.
+
Suho's playful flirting continued, each message a carefully crafted combination of compliments, teasing, and suggestive innuendo. Sieun, despite his initial confusion, found himself eagerly anticipating each new notification.
Another morning, as Sieun was preparing his usual breakfast, his phone buzzed with a new message.
Suho: Woke up thinking about those eyes of yours. They could cure any disease, I swear.
Sieun: You're being ridiculous.
Suho: Only for you, doc.
+
As Sieun was walking home from the hospital, his phone buzzed again. This time, it was a photo of Lucky sprawled out on Suho's bed, his belly exposed in a comical display of relaxation.
Suho: Lucky's taking after his dad. We both know how to relax and have a good time. Wanna join us sometime?
Sieun shook his head. Suho was relentless, but his persistence was endearing, even to a man as reserved as Sieun.
+
Later that week, a new message popped into Sieun's inbox, accompanied by a photo of Suho lounging on his couch, Lucky curled up beside him.
Suho: Bored. Wish I had someone to entertain me.
Sieun, feeling a mix of annoyance and amusement, replied:
Sieun: Read a book.
Suho: Books are boring. I'd rather read your anatomy textbook.
Sieun: You wouldn't understand a word.
Suho: Maybe you could teach me.
Sieun: I'm not your tutor.
Suho: Aww, don't be like that. I'm a quick learner.
Suho was relentless, but there was a charm to his persistence, a playful energy that Sieun found surprisingly nice. He decided to indulge him, just a little.
Sieun: Maybe another time.
Suho: That's what you always say.
Sieun: And you always ask.
Suho: It's called perseverance.
Sieun: It's called being annoying.
Suho: Only for you, doc.
Sieun, finding himself overwhelmed, simply set his phone down and walked away. He needed to clear his head. The intensity of Suho's flirting was both exhilarating and unnerving. It was a dance he wasn't sure he knew the steps to.
+
As the days turned into weeks, the messages kept coming. A photo of Lucky playing fetch at the dog park, accompanied by a caption about how Suho wished Sieun was there to join them. A picture of Suho cooking dinner, with a playful comment about how he was a master chef in the making. A late-night text asking if Sieun was still up and if he wanted to chat.
Sieun found himself responding more and more often, his initial reluctance gradually fading away. He was starting to enjoy the playful banter, the teasing, and the subtle flirtation. It was a welcome distraction from the stress of his studies and the monotony of his daily routine. He even found himself looking forward to Suho's messages, a small smile appearing on his face every time his phone buzzed.
The walls he had built around himself were slowly crumbling, one message at a time.
+
Then one day, out of the blue, a message popped up on Sieun's screen that made him pause mid-bite of his lunch.
Suho: Do you hate me, Sieun? 😞
Sieun blinked, a piece of chicken halfway to his mouth.
Sieun: Why would you think that?
Suho: You never want to meet up with me.
Sieun chewed slowly, considering his response. He wasn't used to articulating his feelings, especially not with someone he'd never met in person.
Sieun: I'm busy.
Suho: Yeah, you've said that before. But it's been weeks. I'm starting to think you're making excuses.
Sieun sighed, setting down his chopsticks.
Sieun: I'm not making excuses.
Suho: Then what's the problem?
Sieun hesitated. He didn't want to admit the truth, even to himself.
Sieun: It's... complicated.
Suho: Complicated how?
Sieun typed a reply, then deleted it. He didn't know how to explain the strange mix of emotions Suho stirred within him. The anticipation, the nervousness, the undeniable attraction.
Sieun: It's not important.
Suho: It is to me. I want to meet you, Sieun.
Suho's message hung in the air, a silent challenge. Sieun's fingers danced over the keyboard, then paused.
Sieun: You're being ridiculous.
Suho: Am I? Or are you just scared?
Sieun bristled at the accusation.
Sieun: Scared of what?
Suho: Of meeting me. Of what might happen if we do.
Sieun's heart hammered against his ribs. He typed and deleted several responses, each one feeling inadequate.
Sieun: That's not it.
Suho: Then what is it, Sieun? 😞
Sieun took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts.
Sieun: It's... I don't know.
Suho: You don't know, or you don't want to say?
Sieun hesitated. He didn't want to admit the truth, even to himself.
Sieun: It's not that simple.
Suho: It's not simple, or you're making it complicated?
Sieun clenched his jaw. He hated feeling like this, off balance and unsure of himself.
Sieun: Just drop it, Suho.
Suho: Not until you tell me what's really going on.
Sieun sighed, a wave of exhaustion washing over him.
Sieun: Let me think about it.
Suho's next message arrived with a hint of resignation.
Suho: Ok, ok. I won't push. But Lucky really misses his new friend.
Sieun felt a pang of guilt. He hadn't considered how the lack of a playdate might be affecting the golden retriever.
Suho: He keeps bringing me one of his old chew toys, the one Dog slobbered all over at the park. It's like he's offering a peace treaty.
Sieun shook his head in amusement. Leave it to Dog to create such a ridiculous situation.
Sieun: That sounds like something Dog would do.
Suho: See? Even our dogs are meant to be friends. Don't you think it's time their owners caught up?
Sieun hesitated, but the warmth in Suho's words was hard to resist.
+
The next morning, Suho sent a photo of Lucky sitting dejectedly by the door, a leash hanging from his mouth.
Suho: This is how he looks every morning, hoping you'll show up at the park.
Sieun sighed. He was starting to feel like a heartless villain.
+
Later that day, another message arrived, this time a video of Lucky spinning in circles and barking excitedly.
Suho: He just saw a beagle that looked like Dog. I thought his tail was going to fall off.
Sieun couldn't help but cave. It seemed like both dogs were suffering from the separation.
Suho: Don't you think it's time we put them out of their misery?
Sieun: Maybe.
Suho: Don't 'maybe' me, Sieun. Just say yes.
+
Later that week, Sieun was working late at the hospital when a photo popped up on his phone. It was Suho, holding a sign that read: "Dr. Sieun, please prescribe a playdate for Dog and Lucky. They're suffering from separation anxiety."
Sieun shook his head at Suho's antics.
Sieun: You're unhinged.
Suho: But you love it.
+
Sieun had barely recovered from Suho's previous flirtations when the other man seemed to up the ante, taking a more direct approach.
One evening, as Sieun was preparing for bed, his phone buzzed with a notification. It was a close-up photo of Suho's lips, slightly parted, a playful smile tugging at the corners.
Suho: Lucky gave me too many kisses. Look how wet my lips are now.
Sieun stared at the photo, his breath hitching in his throat. He tried to focus on the text, but his eyes kept returning to the image of Suho's lips, plump and inviting. He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry.
Sieun: Glad he's affectionate.
Suho: He gets it from his dad. We're both very... demonstrative with our love.
Sieun quickly closed his phone, his heart racing in his chest. He wasn't sure if he was annoyed or intrigued, but either way, he couldn't deny the effect Suho's message was having on him.
+
A few days later, another photo appeared. This time, it was a close-up of Suho's collarbone, the skin smooth and tanned. Lucky's paw rested on his chest, its fur a stark contrast against Suho's skin.
Suho: This spot is reserved for Lucky cuddles. But I wouldn't mind sharing it with someone else.
Sieun felt a warmth spread through his chest. He knew Suho was flirting, but he couldn't deny the subtle thrill it gave him.
Sieun: You should focus on Lucky.
Suho: I am focused. On finding him a friend for his dad. Someone who appreciates a good cuddle buddy.
+
The next morning, as Sieun was reviewing his notes for an upcoming exam, another photo popped up. This time, it was a close-up of Suho's eyes, gazing directly into the camera with an intensity that made Sieun's breath catch in his throat.
Suho: Are you hypnotized yet?
Sieun stared at the photo, feeling a strange pull towards those dark, captivating eyes. He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts.
Sieun: You're being ridiculous.
Suho: But you like it, don't you?
Sieun: No.
+
Suho's next message arrived with a hint of desperation.
Suho: What do I need to do, doc? I've sent you photos of my abs, my eyes, even Lucky’s cute little paws. What else do you want?
Sieun stared at the message. Suho's persistence was amusing, but it was also starting to wear on him. He knew he was being difficult, but something held him back from agreeing to meet up.
Sieun: You're being ridiculous.
Suho: Am I? Or am I just trying everything I can to get you to meet me?
Sieun sighed, shaking his head. He couldn't deny the warmth that spread through him at Suho's words, but he still wasn't ready to take that leap.
Sieun: Maybe another time.
Suho: 😞😞😞
Sieun can’t believe Suho replied again with a series of pout emojis. Sieun imagined the man pouting in real life, and the thought sent a shiver down his spine.
He was on the verge of giving in, of agreeing to meet up, just to see that pout in person. But then, silence.
+
A day passed. Then two. Then three.
The constant stream of messages from Suho, which had become a part of Sieun's daily routine, suddenly stopped. The silence was deafening, leaving Sieun with a strange sense of emptiness. He checked his phone obsessively, hoping for a new notification, but nothing came.
+
Sieun tried to convince himself that Suho's silence meant nothing. Perhaps he was busy, or his phone had died, or he had simply lost interest. Yet, the doubt gnawed at him, a persistent itch he couldn't scratch.
He threw himself into his studies, poring over textbooks and journals until the early hours of the morning. Dog, sensing his owner's unease, whined and nudged at his hand, seeking comfort and attention. Sieun absently scratched the dog's ears, his mind racing with unanswered questions.
The silence stretched into a third day, and Sieun could no longer ignore the growing knot of worry in his chest. Had something happened to Suho? Was he okay? He tried to convince himself that it was none of his business, that they were just two strangers who had exchanged a few chat messages, but the concern wouldn't fade.
He decided he couldn't take it anymore. He had to know.
That evening, as Young-yi returned from her classes, Sieun intercepted her in the hallway.
"Young-yi.”
Young-yi jumped, startled by his sudden appearance. "Oh, Sieun! You scared me."
"How is Lucky?" Sieun asked, his voice carefully neutral.
"Lucky? He's fine," Young-yi replied, a puzzled look on her face. "Why do you ask?"
Sieun shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Just curious. How's his owner?"
Young-yi's face lit up. "Suho? Oh, he's great! He's actually planning to take Lucky to the dog park this weekend."
"Really?" Sieun's voice was barely a whisper.
"Yeah," Young-yi nodded. "He said he matched with someone on that dog app and they're going to meet up there."
A cold dread washed over Sieun. So, that was it. Suho had found someone else. Someone he actually wanted to meet in person.
"That's... nice," Sieun managed to say, his voice barely above a whisper.
He turned and walked into his apartment, leaving a bewildered Young-yi behind.
As if on cue, Sieun's phone vibrated in his hand. A message from Suho flashed across the screen.
Suho: Hey.
He hesitated for a moment, then typed a curt reply:
Sieun: Hey.
Suho: Sorry for the radio silence. I've been busy.
Sieun: Busy with what?
He couldn't help the slight edge in his tone.
Suho: Oh, you know. Stuff. I've been chatting with this girl on the app lately. She's really nice. Has a pet Labrador. We exchanged photos, and she's really pretty. Planning to meet up with her this weekend at the dog park. Thought you should know.
Sieun felt a cold fist clench around his heart. So, that was it. Suho had found someone else. He typed a reply, his fingers trembling slightly.
Sieun: Good for you.
Suho: Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I think we'll hit it off.
Sieun's jaw tightened. He couldn't believe how easily Suho was moving on.
Sieun: That's great.
Suho: I'll let you know how it goes. Maybe we can all hang out sometime.
Sieun forced a laugh, though it sounded hollow even to his own ears.
Sieun: We'll see.

Over the next two days, leading up to the weekend, Suho seemed determined to keep Sieun on edge. His messages were filled with subtle (or not-so-subtle) references to his upcoming dog park date.
Suho: This girl I'm meeting up with is a veterinarian. She's really smart and caring. I think Lucky's going to like her.
Sieun's jaw clenched. He didn't want to feel jealous, but a pang of envy shot through him. He quickly typed a reply, masking his emotions with his usual indifference.
Sieun: Good for you.
+
The next morning, Suho sent a photo of himself.
Suho: Just picked out the perfect outfit for Lucky’s playdate tomorrow. You think this is okay or a sporty look would be better?
Sieun: Wear whatever you want.
Suho: You're no help. But seriously, I'm hoping to make a good impression. This girl seems really cool.
Sieun felt a pang of irritation, but he brushed it off, not wanting to give Suho the satisfaction of knowing he was bothered.
+
Another message dropped in the afternoon.
Suho: So, I'm taking her to this new dog-friendly café downtown after meeting at the park. They have the best peanut butter treats for dogs. Lucky's gonna love it.
Sieun: Sounds fun.
Suho: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. I think we'll have a lot to talk about.
Sieun: I'm sure you will.
Sieun closed his phone, a surge of frustration bubbling within him. He couldn't understand why Suho was so intent on sharing every detail of Lucky’s upcoming playdate.
+
The night before the planned meet-up, Suho sent a final message.
Suho: I'm really excited for tomorrow. I think this could be something special. I hope you're not too jealous, doc.
Sieun stared at the message, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew Suho was just teasing, but the thought of him meeting up with someone else was surprisingly painful. He typed a reply, his voice laced with a bitterness he didn't intend.
Sieun: Have fun.
He berated himself for his hesitation, for his fear of vulnerability. He had let Suho slip away, and now he might never have the chance to know him beyond the confines of a screen.

D-day arrived, a bright, sunny Saturday morning. Sieun paced his small apartment, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a restless energy. Dog, sensing his owner's distress, followed him around, whining softly and nudging his head against Sieun's leg.
Sieun tried to distract himself with his usual routine – a quick breakfast, a few chapters of his textbook, a game of fetch with Dog. But nothing seemed to work. The image of Suho, laughing and flirting with another person, kept flashing through his mind.
As he watched Dog chase after the worn tennis ball, a sudden realization struck him. The ball, once a bright shade of yellow, was now faded and worn, its seams frayed and loose. It was a reminder of the time they'd spent together, of the countless hours of play and companionship.
Sieun bent down, picking up the ball and examining it closely. A wave of guilt washed over him. He had been so consumed by his own anxieties and insecurities that he'd neglected Dog's needs. The beagle needed a playmate, a friend to run and romp with. And Suho's Lucky was the perfect candidate.
He couldn't let his own pride stand in the way of Dog's fun. He had to meet Suho, at least once, to see if there was any truth to the connection they'd forged online.
With a newfound determination, Sieun grabbed his phone and sent a message to Suho.
Sieun: Where are you?
Suho's lack of response didn't deter Sieun. He quickly grabbed Dog's leash, a determined glint in his eyes. A crisp autumn breeze whipped through the air as they made their way to the dog park, Sieun bundled up in a warm scarf and jacket.
The dog park was nestled in a quiet corner of the city, a sprawling expanse of green dotted with trees shedding their golden leaves. The sound of barking dogs filled the air, a mixture of happy yelps and excited whines. Sieun scanned the crowd, his eyes searching for a girl and a boy, a labrador and a golden retriever.
But no one matched the description. He waited for several minutes, growing increasingly confused.
Just as he was about to give up, Dog suddenly pulled on his leash, barking excitedly and running towards a familiar golden figure.
Lucky.
Sieun followed, his heart pounding in his chest. As he approached, he saw a man kneeling beside a golden retriever, his back to Sieun. The man had a broad back and a head of tousled, military-cut hair. He was laughing, his boyish smile radiating warmth even from a distance.
Sieun's breath hitched. It was Suho.
The familiar chime of Dog's tags jingled as he pulled Sieun towards the golden blur of fur that was Lucky. As they got closer, Sieun's eyes met Suho's.
Suho was smiling, a wide, genuine grin that seemed to light up his entire face. He stared at Sieun with an intensity that made his heart feel something.
"Hey," Suho finally said, his voice raspy with unspoken emotions. He continued to stare, the smile never leaving his face.
"Hi."
The two men stared at each other for a moment, a silent conversation passing between them. Sieun was struck by how different Suho looked in person. The photos hadn't done him justice. His eyes were even brighter, his smile even more charming. Sieun felt a warmth spread through his chest, a warmth he couldn't quite explain.
"I can't believe you actually came," Suho said, his smile unwavering.
Sieun frowned, his confusion growing. "What are you talking about?"
"Well, I didn't think you'd actually show up. You've been pretty resistant to the idea of meeting up."
Sieun's frown deepened. "Where's Lucky's playdate?"
"What playdate?"
Sieun's confusion turned to suspicion. "The one you mentioned. With the girl from DogDate."
A slow grin spread across Suho's face. "Ah, that playdate."
Sieun's stomach tightened. "What about it?"
Suho's grin widened, revealing a dimple in his cheek. "There is no playdate."
It took a few seconds for Sieun's brain to process Suho's words. When the realization hit him, a wave of emotions washed over him. Anger, embarrassment, and a strange sense of relief all swirled together.
"What?" he managed to say, his voice barely above a whisper.
Suho chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Surprised?"
Sieun crossed his arms, a defensive posture he rarely adopted. "A little."
"I knew you'd come," Suho said, his voice dropping low. "I just had to give you a little push."
Sieun raised an eyebrow, a mixture of skepticism and curiosity in his gaze. "A push?"
Suho shrugged, a playful grin spreading across his face. "I took a gamble. I figured out that if I went radio silent, you'd ask Young-yi about me. I figured, if I made you jealous enough, you'd eventually show up."
Sieun felt his ears burned. "Jealous?"
"Oh, come on, Sieun," Suho said, reaching out to playfully nudge his shoulder. "Don't pretend you weren't a little bit jealous of my imaginary date."
Sieun averted his eyes, unable to meet Suho's gaze. He felt a mixture of embarrassment and...something else. It was a strange feeling, one he wasn't quite ready to acknowledge.
"I wasn't jealous," he mumbled, his voice barely audible.
Suho laughed, a deep, hearty sound that filled the crisp autumn air. "Sure you weren't," he said, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "But I'm glad you're here now."
Sieun looked away, unable to meet Suho's gaze. The other boy’s honesty was disarming, and he found himself at a loss for words.
Suho, sensing Sieun's hesitation, reached out and gently touched his arm. "Hey, I'm sorry," he said, his voice sincere. "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I just... I really wanted to meet you."
Sieun looked down at their dogs, who were now rolling around in the grass, their tails wagging furiously. They seemed oblivious to the tension between their owners, their joy a stark contrast to Sieun's inner turmoil.
"Why?" Sieun asked, his voice barely audible.
Suho met his gaze, a warmth in his eyes that Sieun couldn't ignore. "Because I like you, Sieun. I like you a lot."
A silence stretched between them, broken only by the playful yelps of their dogs. Suho watched Sieun, a hopeful glint in his eyes.
"So?" he prompted, tilting his head slightly. "What do you have to say for yourself?"
Sieun averted his gaze, his cheeks flushing slightly.
"I... don't know what to say."
Suho chuckled, his voice warm and inviting. "How about you start with how you feel?"
Sieun took a deep breath, his eyes meeting Suho's once again. "I... I'm glad you're not on a dog date with someone else," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Suho's smile widened, the dimple in his cheek deepening. "That's a start," he said, his voice teasing. "But I'm looking for something a little more... specific."
Sieun opened his mouth to speak, but the words seemed to catch in his throat. He wasn't used to expressing his emotions, especially not ones as complicated as these.
Suho, sensing Sieun's hesitation, leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "You like me back. I feel it.”
Sieun looked away, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew he should say something, but the words wouldn't come. He just hoped the other boy would understand.
"You look amazing in person, by the way," Suho said, his voice soft and sincere. "Your eyes, how you behave, how you speak, and your face," Suho paused for a millisecond as he finished the sentence, "it feels awfully strange."
At that moment, a genuine smile spread across Sieun's face. It was a small, almost imperceptible change, but it didn't go unnoticed by Suho.
Suho's eyes widened, a surprised gasp escaping his lips. "You smiled," he whispered, his voice filled with wonder.
Sieun, startled by his own reaction, quickly schooled his features into their usual stoicism. "It was a reflex," he mumbled, looking away.
"Well," Suho said, breaking the silence, "I'm glad I could make you smile." He paused, his gaze unwavering. "Even if it was just a reflex."
"Don't get used to it," he muttered, averting his eyes.
Suho chuckled, his voice warm and teasing. "Challenge accepted, doc."

They spent the rest of the afternoon at the dog park, watching their dogs play and chatting about everything and nothing. Sieun found himself surprised by how easy it was to talk to Suho, how effortlessly they fell into a comfortable rhythm of conversation.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the park, Suho turned to Sieun, a serious expression on his face.
"I'm glad you came today, Sieun," he said, his voice sincere. "I know you were hesitant, but I'm hoping this is just the start."
Sieun met his gaze, his heart pounding in his chest. "We'll see," he replied, his voice barely a whisper.
Suho's smile softened. "I was hoping we could see each other again," he said, his eyes searching Sieun's for any sign of hesitation. "Take the dogs out again, maybe grab a coffee... or dinner."
Sieun's breath hitched. He had never been asked out so directly before, but the sincerity in Suho's eyes was undeniable. He looked down at their dogs, who were now napping peacefully side by side. A warmth spread through his chest, a feeling he couldn't deny any longer.
"Okay," he said, his voice steady and firm. "I'd like that."
Suho's smile returned, brighter than before. "Me too, Sieun," he said, his hand finding Sieun's, their fingers interlacing briefly. "Me too."

3 months later
The sun was starting to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Their dogs, Dog and Lucky, were splashing around in the water, their barks echoing in the distance.
Sieun was sprawled on a beach towel, a worn copy of a medical journal open on his chest. Or at least, that's what it looked like. In reality, his eyes were half-closed, his attention divided between the book and the man beside him.
Suho was propped up on an elbow, his gaze fixed on Sieun. A lazy grin played on his lips as he watched the pre-med student attempt to focus on his reading. The sun had kissed his skin a deep bronze, and his hair, usually cropped close, was slightly longer, framing his face in loose waves.
"You know," Suho began, his voice low and husky, "you're not fooling anyone with that book."
Sieun glanced up, a hint of annoyance in his eyes. "I'm trying to study."
Suho chuckled, his hand reaching out to brush a strand of hair from Sieun's forehead. "Sure, you are. But I think you're enjoying this a little too much."
Sieun tried to look away but found himself drawn back to Suho's gaze. The other man's eyes were warm and inviting, and for a moment, Sieun felt a surge of something he couldn't quite name.
"Stop staring at me," he muttered, his voice barely audible.
Suho grinned, his hand sliding down to Sieun's jaw. "I can't help it. You're too damn attractive."
Sieun tried to pull away, but Suho's grip tightened. "Don't be such a baby," Suho teased.
Before Sieun could respond, Suho leaned in and kissed his cheek. The touch was brief but electrifying, sending a shiver down Sieun's spine.
"Hey," Sieun protested, his voice barely a whisper.
Suho grinned. "What? Can’t I appreciate my baby genius?"
Sieun opened his mouth to retort, but Suho cut him off with another kiss, this time on the corner of his mouth.
"Stop it," Sieun managed to say, his voice barely a whisper.
Suho chuckled. "Make me."
And with that, he leaned in and captured Sieun's lips in a soft, lingering kiss. He closed his eyes, letting Suho have his way. After all, he wasn’t complaining.
Later, he leaned against Suho’s shoulder, his eyes closed, the rhythmic sound of the waves lulling him into a state of relaxation. Suho’s arm was slung around his waist, his fingers tracing lazy circles on Sieun's skin.
“You know,” Suho started, “this feels like we’re married or something. Maybe we are in our past lives, don’t you think?”
“We’re just hanging out at the beach,” he mumbled into Suho’s chest.
Suho chuckled, tightening his arm around Sieun. “Yeah, just hanging out,” he drawled, his voice laced with playful sarcasm. “With our dogs, on a beach, cuddling, watching the sunset. Totally casual.”
Sieun tried to ignore the warmth spreading through his cheeks. “Whatever you say,” he muttered.
Suho leaned down, his breath warm against Sieun’s ear. “You know, I could get used to this.”
“You’d better not.”
Suho chuckled, his breath tickling Sieun’s neck. “Why not? My boyfriend is quite comfy in my arms, if I do say so myself.”
Sieun tried to pull away but found himself trapped in Suho’s embrace. “Stop it,” he mumbled, his voice muffled by Suho’s chest.
“Stop what?” Suho chuckled again, his lips brushing against Sieun's earlobe. "You know, I've been thinking," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "We should get a place together. Something with a big backyard for the dogs."
"We only started dating three months ago."
"And?" Suho replied, his voice laced with amusement. "What's stopping us? We're perfect for each other."
Sieun opened his mouth to protest, but Suho cut him off with a kiss on the cheek. "Don't think too hard, doc," he said, grinning. "Just enjoy the moment."
Sieun sighed, a smile tugging at his lips. Maybe Suho was right. Maybe it was time to stop thinking and just enjoy this moment.
They both deleted the app already, but he mentally noted he should probably thank the creator of DogDate later.
The End.
