Work Text:

Neal stood on the balcony of his apartment and stared out into the skyline of the city that he wished to explore so badly. But he was tied to his radius in a not very fun part of the city. The most fun that he could have was other people coming over. But no one had that night.

Or any night that week.

It was getting to him. Even Mozzie hadn't been able to. He had dipped out of New York thanks to something he wasn't telling Neal about. Which was par for the course.

But it meant Neal was bored and feeling more trapped in the city he loved than he had in months.

There was a knock at his door. A very unexpected knock. No one was supposed to be coming over that evening.

Cautiously he went to the door. Whoever it was would have had to get passed June. But that didn't always mean much. Some of the people who tried to get to him could easily break in. Or overpower June.

But all the nervous energy he had disappeared when the person became clear.

"Hello, Sophie," he said, moving aside so his old not quite friend could enter the apartment.

"I was in town and wanted to stop by and say hello," she said.

"Only to say hello?"

He gave her a look over his shoulder where he was getting out wine glasses for the bottle she brought. She smiled back with a classic Sophie smile.

"Well I also have a small warning for you," she said.

"And what would be?"

She waited until they were both sat with glasses of wine in their hands to explain. Not just about her warning, which was warranted, but all about her new team and what they did for people. It was something he had never thought of and he was proud of her for it. She seemed happy.

And left him with an offer to join them when he got done.

The next morning, if he saw a woman who looked a lot like his friend? He didn't.
