Work Text:
“They're beautiful aren't they?”
No response.
Rarity looked over and saw Trenderhoof was already walking over to the barn, she scrambled up from what she thought would be a romantic picnic, and ran after him.
As they stepped into the barn Rarity understood why he had left. Applejack was hard at work tending to her cows.
Trenderhoof sighed.
“She's perfect isn't she?”
Rarity snorted.
“I mean, I guess .”
Applejack wasn't perfect. She could be incredibly controlling and competitive to her own downfall. She never understood Rarity's insistence on cleanliness and fashion. No, she wasn't perfect.
But maybe she was close.
Rarity leaned on the wall watching Applejack milk the cows, unaware of her spectators.
I mean sure , she could see the appeal. Her toned arms moving up and down, the glistening sweat beginning to climb down her tank top, anyone could see that was attractive. Rarity rolled her eyes again. It was common sense to think Applejack was hot. She was everything Rarity would want in a partner, she just wasn't a man.
Maybe she doesn't have to be a man .
Rarity coughed, choking on her own spit. Trenderhoof glanced at her inquisitively but didn't say anything. Before Rarity could dwell on the thought anymore, Applejack noticed them.
“Hey Rarity!” Applejack visibly brightened as she walked over to her.
Rarity smiled, standing up straighter.
“Hello darling.”
“I see you still got yer friend with ya.”
Rarity looked over at Trenderhoof remembering he was there. He was looking at Applejack as if she was fresh meat at a butcher's shop. He was becoming less and less attractive by the minute.
Before Rarity could say something Trenderhoof moved forward.
“It's so wonderful to see you again, Miss Applejack.”
He grabbed her hand and kissed it. Rarity felt her gut twist and she had to step back to keep herself from yanking Trenderhoof away from Applejack.
“Oh uh, just Applejack is okay.” Applejack pulled her hand back awkwardly.
“You're so humble Miss Applejack.”
Rarity ground her teeth.
“Trenderhoof I think they need us back in town to set up.”
“Oh. Can't we stay a couple more minutes?"
“No, we can't.” She grabbed his wrist and began marching away.
“Rarity!” Applejack called.
Rarity snapped around.
“I know yer awfully busy, but would you like to have dinner together tonight?”
Trenderhoof looked longingly at Applejack as if begging her to invite him too.
Anger began boiling up inside Rarity. She continued marching away again.
“Maybe.” She called back, refusing to look behind her.
She didn't know if she was more mad at Applejack or Trenderhoof.
“Do you think Applejack might like to have dinner with me sometime?”
Rarity laughed.
“That's very doubtful, sweetheart.”
Trenderhoof stuck his lip out, pouting like a toddler.
“Well maybe one day. She's just beautiful isn't she?”
Rarity's eye twitched.
“She is not beautiful . And she's not just some woman for you to ogle at!” Her voice began to rise. “She is hardworking, honest, thoughtful, and so, so much more than a woman for you to take home and marry!”
Trenderhoof curled his lip, beginning to become irritated.
“What, are you jealous?”
Rarity swallowed a scream. Of course she was! If he was to take any woman home to marry it should be Rarity.
He was the closest person Rarity would love to marry who wasn't…
Rarity shook her head and focused on walking forward.
“A proper lady never gets jealous.”

Rarity sighed, twirling the fork around in her salad. She'd love to say she “managed to ditch” Trenderhoof, but he was more than happy to leave Rarity by herself for lunch. It seemed like she was chasing him around all the time, it should be the other way around!
She glanced to her left and saw the framed picture she kept of Applejack and her. She scowled at it. Obviously Trenderhoof was into the farmer type. His eyes practically bugged out of his skull when he saw Applejack working.
Rarity grinned, forming an idea. If it was a country girl he wanted, it was a country girl he was getting.
◇◇◇
The issue was that Rarity knew of no stores that sold “country” clothes. She definitely couldn't sew some, she'd end up adding her own Rarity touch to it. So, she turned to the only place she knew had the clothes she needed, Applejack's closet.
Applejack was having lunch with Twilight so she should be out for a while. Rarity eyed the clothes inside, recognizing most of them. She even remembered all the days Applejack wore most of the outfits. She spotted the one Applejack had been wearing the day all of them became friends. It was a white tank top, with Applejack's favorite boot cut jeans.
Such a boring outfit, yet Rarity still remembered it so vividly. It was kind of beautiful in its own way. It definitely looked great on Applejack.
Rarity took the outfit out of the closet. She pulled the tank top over her head and turned to the full length mirror to her left.
The tank top was way too big on her, it might as well have been a small dress. Rarity never really noticed how tall Applejack was compared to her, but seeing this now made sense. She wouldn't have it any other way.
Rarity grabbed a cowboy hat off the bed and smiled at herself in the mirror. It was actually pretty nice wearing Applejack's clothes. Rarity brought the shirt up to her nose without thinking. They even smelled like her.
“Rarity?”
Rarity practically jumped out of her skin, seeing Applejack in the doorway. She opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out.
“Why are you in my clothes?”
Usually Rarity was fast to retort, especially when it came to Applejack, but it felt like she was short circuiting.
“You smell nice.” Rarity blurted out.
Her hands flew to her mouth, and she could feel her face turning red. She wanted to make a beeline for the door, or maybe even jump out the window but she felt frozen by Applejack's gaze.
Rarity flushed a shade brighter when she realized she was only in her underwear and Applejack's tank top.
Applejack took a step closer and Rarity felt goosebumps rise on her arms.
“Why are you wearin my clothes Rare?”
“I, um…” Rarity felt her brain slowly begin to work again. “Trenderhoof is obviously enamored by you and I wanted to see if maybe he'd like me if I…looked like you.”
Applejack's expression softened.
“Oh darlin’, you shouldn't ever change yourself for a man, especially one like him.”
“I know, I know, it's just I also knew it was a losing game. I mean of course he loves you, just look at you!”
“What do you mean?”
“Well I mean you're strong, kind, and handsome. And Celestia, don't get me started on your arms .”
“My…arms?”
“Well yeah. When you reach up to pick apples, or are milking the cows they…” Rarity trailed off seeing Applejack's expression.
Applejack grinned.
“Yeah? What else?”
Rarity's face turned brighter (if that was even possible at this point).
“Don't look at me like that! Anyone can see you're attractive, don't make it weird. That's why I wasn't surprised when I realized Trenderhoof liked you, I just wish he'd stop flirting with you!”
Applejack leaned on the door frame and crossed her arms (those damn arms).
“So that he'd flirt with you, or so that I'd flirt with you?”
Rarity rolled her eyes.
“Obviously so that…” And then Rarity became aware of who she'd really rather have flirt with her.
If Trenderhoof actually flirted with her at this moment she'd roll her eyes and scoff. But Applejack…
She let out a small gasp despite herself.
Applejack smiled, walking closer and closer to Rarity. When she didn't stop her she placed her hands on Rarity’s hips.
“Who would you rather have?” She whispered into her ear.
Rarity shivered. She swallowed hard, feeling every breath Applejack let out on her neck.
“Who?”
Applejack was so very close to her neck now, every breath making Rarity stiffen.
“You.” She croaked.
Rarity could feel Applejack smile as she finally, finally began kissing her neck.
Rarity’s hands found Applejack’s hair and she let out small gasps despite the feather touches.
She pulled Applejack away slightly.
“We’re both girls.” She protested quietly.
Applejack cupped Rarity’s face.
“Sugar, who ever said two girls can't be in love?”
Rarity racked her brain but she couldn't think of anyone who had specifically told her that. It was just something her brain always made off limits.
Then she noticed Applejack's wording.
In love .
Rarity studied Applejack's face. Her freckles, her green eyes, the little dimple she had on the right side of her face that appeared when she smiled.
Rarity could stare at her face all day.
Rarity could be with Applejack all day. She might even prefer it.
Oh.
Oh.
Rarity was in love with Applejack.
It was never about Trenderhoof. Sure, he was attractive but his personality was about as appealing as a pile of dung. This entire time she was jealous that he was trying to pursue Applejack because she wanted Applejack.
Rarity held Applejack's face and kissed her.
It started off fast and aggressive, all teeth against teeth. Both making up for all the time they yearned. All the time they wanted to devour each other.
Gradually it began to become more tender. Rarity pulled Applejack closer and Applejack began to pepper kisses on her forehead and cheeks.
“Applejack?”
“Yeah doll?” Applejack responded, still peppering kisses all over Rarity's face.
“I-”
“Oh, Applejack!” A shout came from outside. “Are you home?”
Rarity turned towards the window, tensing.
“It's Trenderhoof.”
Applejack softly grabbed her chin and moved Rarity back to her so they were eye to eye.
“Don't look at him, look at me. He doesn't matter right now. All that we need to focus on is us, alright?”
Rarity nodded.
“Now what did you want to tell me sugar?”
Rarity kissed her fiercely again.
“I love you Applejack.”
Applejack seemed to melt from just those words.
“I love you too Rare.”
Rarity couldn't help but grin ear to ear, smiling like a schoolgirl.
“I love you.” She repeated.
“Tell me again hon.”
“I love you." she said again.
She kissed Applejack's nose, and then each of her freckles, repeating the phrase over and over again.
