But then there were arms around her, solid and warm, and he was kneeling on the dusty floorboards and holding her to his chest. And she was in a raging sea but she clung to him like an anchor as the waves of grief crashed into them. He didn’t flinch, didn’t back away.
“Kate—” he murmured into her hair. “I’m so sorry.”
