Work Text:

Hinata storms through the halls of the school, dodging swiftly past students, who all give him strange looks. He grips onto the doors of the gym and shoves the doors open, all of the members give him concerning looks. Hinata runs over to his partner, volleyball partner, that is, and shoves his finger in his face.

Kageyama tries to shove Hinata’s finger out of his face, but before he can, Hinata shouts. “I heard that you have a crush, come on tell me who it is!” He shouts into Kageyama’s face, his outburst caused everyone to turn towards them.

Kageyama gulps. He was pretty sure he had a crush, he never had one before, so it was all new to him. This crush may or may not be on his volleyball partner, the one and only Hinata Shoyo. But he definitely hadn’t told anyone about that, but he did fall asleep in class..and he had a tendency to mumble things in his sleep. This was definitely bad for him.

“You have a what?!” Everyone seems to shout, but some kept their composure. Kageyama looked around nervously, he had to try and get out of this as nonchalant as possible, but his poker face wasn’t good at times like this.

He knew that the nervousness was showing on his face, as everyone was staring at him with the expectation that he was going to tell them. He had no other option, he ran, Kageyama ran. He ran out of the gym and hid behind a wall. He wasn’t sure how long he ran for, but he knew that nobody had followed him. But you could never be sure when Hinata Shoyo was your partner.

Breathless pants next to him caused Kageyama to turn, and he locked eyes with Hinata. Kageyama turned his head away and sighed, he definitely wasn’t getting out of this now.

“Bakaeyama, why did you run away!” He shouted through his panting, though there was no anger behind his words, only confusion and curiosity. Kageyama had to come up with a bluff, and fast.

“I um, forgot my bag.” He lied through his teeth, attempting to slip away. Before he could manage that, Hinata slammed both of his hands at the sides of him, confining him to the wall.

Kageyama flinched, as he hadn’t expected it, but brushed it off. He looked down at Hinata and surrendered, even if he couldn’t run away, he could still lie.

Hinata huffed as he retracted his arms, which were now placed on his hips. “Tell me, I won’t tell anyone else, I swear!” Hinata pleaded.

Kageyama pouted his lip, he would absolutely not be telling Hinata, or anyone else for that matter. “I’m not telling you, dumbass!” He huffed.

That seemed to work, until Hinata started guessing.

“Is it a girl in your class?” He questioned. “It totally is, isn’t it?”

Kageyama supposed he could entertain Hinata this once. He would play along with this game guessing until it goes too far. He also supposed he could give him one hint.

“No, I don’t like girls.” Kageyama revealed, without batting an eye.

Hinata surprisingly didn’t look too shocked, Kageyama thought he would of freaked out.

“That makes sense, you never seemed interested whenever Tanaka and Noya were talking about girls.” He noted, giving his partner a ‘Thanks for telling me!’ thumbs up.

Hinata hummed, before coming up with a different answer. “Could it be, someone on the team?” He wondered, eyeing Kageyama for his answer.

Kageyama didn’t answer, he was a little taken back that Hinata would suggest something like that. Since he didn’t answer, Hinata kept going.

“Is it a first year? Oh my god, it’s not Tsukishima is it?” Hinata speculated, he would support Kageyama for whoever his crush is, but he hoped it wasn’t Tsukishima.

Kageyama looked at Hinata with disgust. “Definitely not.” He shivered, he felt sorry for whoever was going to end up dating that guy, which the whole team knew the person who would end up dating him is Yamaguchi.

Hinata pondered again, he had alot of options to go through, so he might as well go through them all.

“Yamaguchi?” He questioned, looking at his partner for the answer.

“No.” Kageyama said bluntly.

“Okay, any of the second years?” He looked at Kageyama with wonder.

“No.” Kageyama replied, just as bluntly as last time.

“A third year, really Kageyama?” He questioned, sounding a little surprised.

“No.” He replied, wondering whenever this game would be over.

Hinata was stuck, he had named out all the first years, and Kageyama’s crush isn’t a second or third year. He pondered again but suddenly gasped and turned back to Kageyama.

Kageyama was a little surprised at Hinatas actions, he looked at him in confusion. “What?” Kageyama questioned, waiting for the answer for whatever Hinata was so shocked about.

“Seriously Kageyama, you have a crush on coach?!” He interrogated, waiting for an answer to this disgrace.

Kageyama choked on air, he had to take a minute to calm himself before he replied to Hinatas crazy accusation.

“Obviously not you dumbass!” He yelled, he couldn’t believe how seriously stupid his partner was. “The one I have a crush on is you!” Kageyama shouted. Once he was finished shouting, he looked at Hinata, who’s face was bright red.

That’s when Kageyama realised, he just accidentally confessed, didn’t he?

Soon enough, both of their faces were bright red. They were both too embarrassed to say anything. A few minutes passed, Hinata was the one to break the silence.

“Did you mean it?” He mumbled, his voice was shaky and his face was still a blushing mess. He fidgeted with his fingers as he struggled to make eye contact with the taller boy.

Kageyama knew that it was now or never, he cleared his throat and brushed some of the stray hairs off his face.

Kageyamas voiced was quiet as he replied. “Yeah, I did.” He muttered, voice filled with the smallest bit of confidence. Before he could run away and go deal with the rejection through volleyball, Hinata locked eyes with him. Hinata swiftly grabbed his face and pulled him closer, it was a quick but beautiful kiss. It was filled with love and it was Hinatas way of telling Kageyama the feeling was mutual.

It was now Kageyamas turn to be the blushing mess, he could barely even speak. For once, Kageyama smiled. Not the fake smiles he had to do whenever someone told him he should lighten up, it was a true smile. A smile that made Hinatas face heat up and made his heart skip a beat.

They were finally partners. Not just volleyball partners, true partners.

Hinata started to giggle, which left a blushing Kageyama confused. “What’s so funny?” He questioned his partner, he liked that he could call Hinata that now. The giggles finally came to a stop and Hinata started talking again. “I don’t think I would of guessed that I was your crush, not if you didn’t tell me.” Kageyama blushed since he really didn’t mean to tell Hinata, it just slipped out, he definitely didn’t regret it now though.

Kageyama ruffled the shorter ones hair, and gave him a soft smile. “Well since I told you, I think you owe me some meat buns.” Hinata pouted, but he never really minded spoiling Kageyama. “Fine, come on then!” Hinata said as he began to take off, which made the taller boy start to run after him.

What they didn’t know is that Hinata wasn’t the only one who followed Kageyama. Shortly after Hinata had run after Kageyama, the rest of the team followed. All of the Karasuno members were hiding out of sight. They didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but once they heard they just couldn’t leave. They were all happy for their beloved freak duo. Except Tsukishima, but he wasn’t happy about most things.
