Work Text:
Deku was sprawled on his stomach on his bed, his hero notebook lying out in front of him. Class 1-A had just finished a training exercise together and he needed to update his notebook. Too much information flooded his head about his friends’ quirks, and he needed to get it all down before he forgot.
He mumbled quietly to himself, yet had no idea he was doing it. In fact, he was so caught up in his writing that he didn’t hear his door open and someone walk in. He didn’t even notice the hand swiping in front of his face until the person on the other end had no other option than to shake him by the shoulders and force him out of his trance.
Izuku jumped and looked around, his eyes immediately coming to settle on his boyfriend's face.
“Waa-cchan!” Izuku startled. Katsuki just stared back blankly, and slightly accusingly.
“Kacchan, what are you doing here?” Izuku asked. They hadn’t planned a date, and Katsuki usually announced when he was coming over or joined Izuku while walking him back to his dorm after class; he’d never shown up after school so late and without warning.
“Was fucking bored. I did all of my homework,” he sighed, crossing his arms. “Thought you were better than sitting around.”
Izuku smiled; the fact that their relationship had come far enough for Kacchan to want to spend time with him like this—without being asked first—made Izuku unable to hide his happiness. A slight blush crept its way up his cheeks as a soft smile grew.
“Of course you can stay. You're always welcome!”
Katsuki rolled his eyes, despite his similarly red face, and sat on Izuku’s bed next to him. He sat awkwardly for a moment before realizing what Izuku was doing.
“What’s this?” He asked with a quirked eyebrow. He turned his head to look at the notebook Izuku was working on.
“Just taking notes in my hero analysis notebook…” Izuku trailed off, becoming engrossed in the page as he looked down at it.
Katsuki pulled his legs onto the bed and turned so he faced inwards toward Izuku, looking closer at the notebook. He had seen Izuku write his notes his whole life, but he never got a good look at them—except when he used to make fun of them, but that was different.
Katsuki furrowed his brow looking at the page Izuku was working on. “The hell are you writing in four eyes’ page for?”
“Oh! I just…I got a lot of new information in class today during training, so I wanted to write it down before I forgot.”
“New information?” Katsuki questioned and noticed the little shine in Izuku’s eyes as he spoke.
“Yeah, Tsu had a really cool technique she did; did you see it? And Iida's quirk was really pushed to the limit today, and Todoroki too. Mina did some new stuff also, she had some really cool moves! Oh! And then Sero told me more about his quirk—” Izuku rambled, thumbing through the pages as he thought about how to finish the page he was working on.
“Is that it?”
“Eh?”
“Are those the only people you’re writing about?” Katsuki asked, with an odd tone to his voice that confused Izuku.
“Yeah? I just have to finish this page really quickly, and then we can do something fun, okay? I finished all the rest.”
Izuku scrambled to get his last few thoughts down and tried to ignore Katsuki’s glare. That proved harder than he thought it would be, as he could feel it unwavering on his head. Izuku didn’t understand what his boyfriend was feeling—was he upset about something?
“Okay! What do you wanna do—“ He finished up and went to close the book, but Katsuki was too fast. He snatched it right out of his hands.
“Let me see, nerd,” Katsuki said, and Izuku blushed. No one had ever had enough interest to flip through it before. When people asked about it, Izuku would always offer to read some information about a hero they enjoyed, but no one ever took him up on the offer.
“I wanna see what you wrote about me.”
Oh. Izuku’s eyes widened.
“Don’t you wanna do something else?” Izuku asked, fiddling with his hands. “I thought you came in here so we could do something?”
“No,” Katsuki grumbled, and Izuku saw the red of his eyes shine with something akin to anger, but it was less harsh. Izuku didn’t know why Kacchan was so worked up all of a sudden. “I came because I was bored, I didn’t expect us to do anything. I thought you’d just be doing homework.”
“Oh,” Izuku fidgeted, and Katsuki continued flipping through the pages with a heavy glare that Izuku was too panicked to notice. Izuku hovered right over his shoulder, returning Katsuki’s previous stare tenfold.
He was flipping too far; Kacchan was always at the beginning of his notebooks since he couldn’t go long without adding something new about him, and they were around each other at school too often for him to go and grab one of his old books to update it. Starting a new page was just easier. But now, he wished he hadn’t, as Kacchan was far too close to seeing everything…
When Katsuki reached the end of the notebook, Izuku hoped he would give up, or at least become interested in another page about some random hero. But he was out of luck. Katsuki was dead set on this now, and he accomplished anything he put his mind to. He realized he had gone too far and flipped back to the beginning. He was getting too close for Izuku’s comfort, and his heart pounded and pounded until Kacchan was right next to the page—Izuku knew where it was too well, having flipped there more than any other page.
Izuku grabbed it out of his hand at the last second. He couldn’t let his boyfriend see that, he would think he was crazy!
“Eh?”
“Why don’t we do something else?” Izuku reiterated, skin pale as he hugged the notebook tight.
“The fuck? Just let me see, idiot!” Katsuki grumbled, grabbing it back and flipping it open to the same page.
He turned the page. Izuku looked away, flushed, not able to look at his boyfriend’s reaction.
Katsuki’s eyes widened. He knew that Izuku was always chasing after him, but damn. This was a new level that Katsuki had never seen; or that Izuku had never let him see before. This was the longest span of pages in the book, with loads of information (none of which he had told Izuku, Katsuki noticed). Was his boyfriend stalking him?
“The fuck?” Katsuki said aloud, reading the finer print and flipping around. “How the fuck did you find this shit out?”
“Umm,” Izuku said, so mortified at what was happening that he just wanted to hide under his covers and die. Sweat pooled on his brow and coated his hands. “I just… watch you a lot—N-not in a weird way! That came out wrong–”
“NOT IN A WEIRD WAY?” Katsuki yelped, shooting an incredulous look at his boyfriend. “You can't just show me this and then expect me to believe that Izuku…”
Izuku covered his face with his hands.
With that, Katsuki had the time to look at some of the smaller details. There were questions littering the pages, things expanding on all of the creepy information. He guessed that Izuku’s stalking could only go so far, and eventually, he would need to get some actual feedback.
“...No, nerd, that’s not how it works,” Katsuki started, and Izuku peeked out from behind his hands to see what he was talking about. “This question about my costume is dumb. That’s not how it works at all.”
Izuku’s eyes widened. “Well, it was just a theory. I wasn’t sure. That’s why it was just a question.”
“Then why didn’t you ask?” Katsuki scoffed. “Were you ever going to actually ask me the questions, or just keep assuming this dumb shit and being creepy about it?”
“M-maybe,” Izuku began, shifting in his seat and playing with his hands. “I always thought you’d be too angry with me to answer. I’ve been waiting for the right moments to sneak in the questions but I have to spread them out or you’ll get too suspicious that I was asking so many questions.”
“Do you not hear how creepy you sound? You’ve been planning all of this out just to stalk me?” Katsuki rolled his eyes. “And, it’s not like that anymore, is it? You can ask me questions whenever you want now.”
“I guess so…”
“Then c’mon, I’ll answer your dumbass questions,” Katsuki said with an intense look that Izuku didn’t exactly understand. Katsuki patted the bed beside him, and Izuku inched himself closer so they could sit shoulder to shoulder.
“Okay, first of all…” Katsuki started, going into a ramble about his hero suit, expertly answering Izuku’s question. The whole time Izuku stared in wonder, admiring his boyfriend’s passion for the subject. Izuku had really found his soulmate, hadn’t he; someone who was just as obsessed with heroes as he was. (Even if Katsuki would never admit that, and made fun of Izuku for it.)
Meanwhile, Katsuki grew increasingly creeped out at the fact that Izuku knew so much about his hero suit already. The questions he fired back at him were a little concerning.
Izuku was confused that Kacchan wasn’t angrier; they were dating now, yes, and their relationship was much better, but he could admit that his notes were a little…much.
It was just impossible for Izuku to not write all of these things about him. He had pages on all of the pro heroes he admired, namely All Might, but he didn’t personally know All Might until two years ago. Kacchan had always been the hero in his life. And, ever since he was a kid, Kacchan was just as amazing as All Might was in his eyes.
Maybe he had gotten a little obsessive. But Kacchan was the personification of his life dreams and he just couldn’t ever stop reaching out for him. When he was quirkless, simply having Kacchan there made him feel like his goals were within reach. He gave him hope.
And, yeah, maybe he had a little crush on him. Izuku only realized that now though, after they had confessed and gotten together. He had been oblivious to that before.
He was waiting for Katsuki to blow up on him, to tell him that it was all too much. But he didn’t. He sat patiently, answering questions and allowing Izuku to erase every last question and fill them out with statements.
He could write a novel about his boyfriend at this point.
By the time they were finished, Izuku’s embarrassment was washed away by his own rambling and intense thoughts about each of the topics they discussed. He didn’t even realize that an hour had gone by until he felt the cramp in his hand from all the writing.
He looked up at Kacchan, a quiet ‘thank you’ on the tip of his tongue. But before he could speak, Katsuki did first.
“Don’t ever fucking wimp out on asking me questions from now on, got it?”
Izuku just nodded diligently.
“And this doesn’t mean you get to stop watching me! I’m still improving every day, so you better keep your eyes on me, you idiot! Forget those other losers.” Katsuki shifted, and Izuku noticed the same odd look from earlier in his eyes. “Just because Four Eyes and the frog girl are improving doesn’t mean you can stop watching me! Otherwise, I’m gonna rocket ahead and leave you in the dust without you realizing!”
Suddenly, Izuku understood. His eyes widened and he looked into his boyfriend’s eyes, who didn’t meet his gaze fully. “Were you jealous before, Kacchan? That I didn’t write anything new about you and I did for the others? Is that why you wanted to see my notebook so bad?”
Katsuki looked away, hiding his flushed face. “Who would be stupid enough to get jealous over something dumb like that!” he asked, but Izuku could tell he wasn’t fully confident. “I’m clearly the best, no matter what those losers do to get in your stupid notebook.”
“Kacchan!” Izuku said, tearing up. The fact that Kacchan cared so much was too much for Izuku’s heart. “I write about everyone in here! You didn’t do worse than the others, I just like writing everything down, you know that!” He sighed. “But you know, I was just embarrassed about you finding out I wrote about you too.”
Katsuki glanced at Izuku with a questioning look.
“I guess that doesn’t matter now though, since you’ve already seen everything I said anyway…” Izuku blushed, turning to Katsuki’s last page in his notebook, and pointing to a specific spot. “All of this was written today…”
“...Oh.” Was all Katsuki could muster.
“You don’t have to worry, Kacchan,” Izuku said, his tears continuing to flow. “I’ll never stop watching you. I didn’t today, and I won’t ever.”
“Yeah, whatever, nerd,” Katsuki grumbled, but he was relieved. That was all he needed—Izuku’s gaze—and he would be happy. The idea that Izuku wasn’t watching him today scared him a little too much. But now he wouldn’t have to worry. He knew Izuku would keep his promise.
“And why are you crying!?” Kastuki barked, using his sleeve to aggressively wipe Izuku’s face.
“I’m just happy that you care so much, is all.” Izuku smiled up at him, and he could feel the exact moment his insides turned to mush at Izuku’s tear-stained face looking at him so adoringly.
“Of course I care, you nerd. I love you.”
“I love you too, Kacchan.”
Katsuki moved in to kiss Izuku, who returned it in full. Katsuki could feel Izuku’s tears continuously slow until he pulled away to look at him clearly.
“This doesn’t change anything, you know. You’re still the biggest creep in the world.”
Izuku couldn’t deny that. “Only when it comes to you, Kacchan.”
Katsuki probably should have felt weird about that, but it only made him love Izuku more.
