Deja Vu

Summary:

When a young blonde grad student starts to show a strong interest in her husband, Amy can't shake the feeling of deja vu from the Ramona incident.

Work Text:

The sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Sheldon’s office at Caltech, casting a warm glow over the organized chaos of papers, whiteboards filled with equations, and the neatly arranged desk that served as the command center for Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s brilliant mind. For the past week, Sheldon had been preoccupied with the addition of a new graduate student to his research team—Jillian Roberts, a 25-year-old physicist from New York with a penchant for particle theory and, as Amy had noted with mild curiosity, a certain undeniable attractiveness.

Amy hadn’t thought much of Jillian’s arrival at first. After all, Sheldon’s intellect was what usually commanded attention, not his looks. But over the past few days, she’d begun to hear murmurs from colleagues, little comments dropped by Penny and Bernadette about how Jillian seemed to be taking an unusual interest in Sheldon, going out of her way to engage him in conversation, lingering in his office after hours, and—most alarmingly—making an effort to be alone with him as much as possible. This gave her a sense of deja vu from the time that manipulative bitch Ramona Nowitzki tried to steal Sheldon from her. And while, to her benefit, it ended up being an unexpected catalyst for Sheldon's proposal to Amy, this feeling was unsettling.

Amy had brushed off the concerns at first, confident in Sheldon’s loyalty. But curiosity had finally gotten the better of her, and she found herself heading to his office one afternoon, under the pretense of bringing him lunch.

She knocked lightly on the door before pushing it open, her eyes scanning the room. Sheldon was at his desk, engrossed in a set of calculations, his fingers tapping away at the keyboard. Jillian was perched on the edge of the desk, far too close for Amy’s liking, her body angled toward Sheldon as she leaned in, her hair cascading over her shoulder in what could only be described as an intentionally seductive manner.

“Oh, Dr. Cooper,” Jillian was saying, her voice tinged with an exaggerated sweetness that made Amy’s skin crawl. “You’re just so brilliant. I’ve never met anyone who can solve equations like you can. It’s… inspiring.”

Sheldon, oblivious to her tone, barely glanced up from his screen. “Yes, well, it’s not uncommon for those with a superior intellect to excel in such matters. Although I must say, your own work on particle collision models is quite promising, Jillian.”

Amy watched the exchange from the doorway, her heart tightening as she saw the way Jillian’s eyes sparkled at Sheldon’s praise. But it wasn’t just the admiration in Jillian’s gaze that bothered Amy—it was the way Jillian’s hand casually brushed against Sheldon’s arm, the way she tilted her head to the side, her smile coy and suggestive.

Amy felt a surge of protectiveness welling up inside her, coupled with a flicker of insecurity that she immediately chastised herself for feeling. Sheldon loved her—she knew that with every fiber of her being. But still, the sight of another woman so brazenly attempting to seduce her husband was enough to make her blood boil.

Taking a deep breath, Amy stepped fully into the room, making her presence known. “Sheldon,” she called, her voice steady despite the swirl of emotions inside her. “I brought you lunch.”

Sheldon looked up, his face breaking into a smile at the sight of her. “Amy! What a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t expecting you.”

Jillian, on the other hand, seemed to stiffen at Amy’s arrival, her smile faltering ever so slightly. “Oh, hello, Dr. Fowler,” she said, her tone suddenly a touch cooler. “I didn’t realize you’d be stopping by.”

Amy returned the smile, though hers was far more genuine. “I thought I’d surprise Sheldon. I know how absorbed he gets in his work and sometimes forgets to eat.”

Sheldon nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, I do tend to lose track of time when I’m engaged in complex computations. Thank you, Amy.”

Amy walked over to the desk, setting the carefully packed lunchbox down in front of Sheldon. She could feel Jillian’s eyes on her, assessing, calculating, and for a brief moment, Amy wondered if Jillian was trying to figure out how someone like her—a woman who was often described as plain, whose fashion sense was dictated more by comfort than style—had ended up with someone like Sheldon.

As Sheldon began unpacking his lunch, oblivious to the tension in the room, Jillian shifted slightly, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Amy. “You know, Dr. Fowler,” she said with an air of feigned innocence, “I’ve been so impressed with your relationship with Dr. Cooper. It’s not every day you see someone as brilliant as he is settling down with someone… so unpretentious.”

The comment hung in the air, its meaning all too clear. Amy felt a flush of anger rise in her cheeks, but before she could respond, Sheldon’s fork paused mid-air, and he looked up at Jillian with a sudden sharpness in his eyes.

“Excuse me?” he asked, his tone icy and his expression one of confusion and growing offense.

Jillian blinked, seemingly taken aback by the sudden shift in Sheldon’s demeanor. “I just meant… well, it’s refreshing, isn’t it? That you’re not caught up in superficial things like appearances. You married someone for who they are, not for how they look.”

Sheldon’s eyes narrowed, and Amy could see the gears turning in his mind as he processed Jillian’s words. For someone who prided himself on being slow to catch on to social nuances, Sheldon seemed to grasp the insult underlying Jillian’s comment with remarkable speed.

He set his fork down carefully, his expression growing stern. “Jillian,” he began, his voice firm, “I don’t appreciate your insinuations. Amy is the most remarkable woman I have ever met. Her intellect, her compassion, her dedication to her work—those are the qualities that attracted me to her. But let me be perfectly clear: I also find her physically attractive. I find her beautiful, and I consider myself extremely fortunate to be her husband.”

Jillian’s eyes widened, clearly not expecting such a direct rebuke. “Dr. Cooper, I didn’t mean—”

Sheldon cut her off with a wave of his hand. “I think you’ve said quite enough. It’s evident that you lack the professionalism and respect that I expect from members of my research team. As of this moment, you are no longer a part of it.”

Jillian’s face flushed with embarrassment, and she opened her mouth to protest, but Sheldon’s expression left no room for argument. With a hasty nod, she gathered her things and left the office, her footsteps echoing down the hallway.

As the door clicked shut behind her, Sheldon let out a small huff of annoyance, turning back to his lunch as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Amy, however, remained standing where she was, staring at him in a mix of surprise and admiration.

“Sheldon,” she said softly, her voice filled with emotion. “You didn’t have to do that.”

He looked up at her, his brow furrowing slightly. “Of course I did, Amy. She was being rude and disrespectful. I won’t tolerate anyone speaking to you like that.”

Amy’s heart swelled with affection as she moved to sit beside him, her hand reaching out to cover his. “I’m so touched that you stood up for me. I know it’s not easy for you to pick up on those kinds of social cues, but you did… and it means the world to me.”

Sheldon’s expression softened, and he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “I may not always understand social situations, Amy, but I know when someone is being unkind to the person I love. And I won’t stand for it.”

Amy leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to his cheek. “Thank you, Sheldon. You always know how to make me feel valued.”

He smiled at her, a genuine warmth in his eyes. “You are valued, Amy. More than you could ever know.”

They sat together in the quiet of his office, the tension from the earlier exchange melting away as they shared a moment of simple, heartfelt connection. For all of Sheldon’s quirks and complexities, his love for Amy was something pure and unwavering—a love that transcended the superficial, that was rooted in a deep, abiding respect for who she was as a person.

As the afternoon sun continued to stream through the windows, casting long shadows across the floor, Amy found herself feeling grateful—not just for Sheldon’s defense of her, but for the deep bond they shared. In a world where appearances often took precedence, Sheldon’s love was a reminder that true beauty lay in the mind, the heart, and the soul.

And as they sat together, Amy knew that she had found something truly special—something that no amount of superficial charm or beauty could ever compare to. She had found a partner who saw her for who she truly was, who loved her for her mind and her spirit, and who, in his own unique way, made her feel more cherished than she ever thought possible.

It was in that moment that Amy realized how deeply fortunate she was to have Sheldon by her side—a man who, despite his many complexities, made her life wonderfully simple. With him, she didn’t need to be anything other than herself, and that, she knew, was the greatest gift of all.
