Take a Break

Summary:

Yoongi is a hard worker. And he has been pushing himself to work excessively, arriving early, staying late, and even sneaking in work from home. In response, he is assigned a probationary caretaker to live with them and ensure they don't overwork or engage in unhealthy habits.

Notes:

Prompt:

Earth has been taken over, but its population is still allowed to live there under the survey of the alien race that conquered them. This race made it clear that the humans would still be expected to contribute to society—a full 5 to 15 hour work week in easy jobs with breaks as necessary, so as not to harm their fragile bodies. Since this change, character A has a recent history of going to work early, staying late, and sneaking in work from home. They’re assigned a probationary caretaker to live with them to ensure they don’t overwork themself or otherwise engage in unhealthy habits. Unfortunately for independent and stubborn character A, the caretaker isn’t willing to negotiate on what’s best for them.

Chapter Text

Yoongi was a man with dreams. It may not seem like that to most, who think he’s just an aloof guy who doesn’t have concerns about anything, but he had plans for his life. From the age of four, when he began to play the piano, he knew he wanted to do music professionally. That was only a year before Earth was invaded.

Elara was a planet full of taller than average beings who seemed, to Yoongi, to have control issues. Elarans were conquering many planets in the universe, going from each one and taking their resources to benefit their own kind. Yoongi wishes that’s all they did to Earth. Instead, they decided to take pity on the humans that lived on Earth. Humans are still allowed to live on Earth, as long as they abide by the Elarans rules. In no place to deny this deal, the world leaders gave all power to the emperor of Elara. Seemed easy at the time, just follow the rules. But there were a lot of rules. Too many rules.

For example, humans are still expected to contribute to society. But they can’t do too much. After all, this is the planet Elara took pity on, they wouldn’t want to overwork the fragile humans. Almost all jobs are reassigned to the aliens, and only the easy ones are given to humans. Humans must adapt to Elara culture, their music, their entertainment, everything.

That’s the moment that Yoongi knew his dream was just that, a dream. As he grew up, he opposed everything that was happening, but he knew to swallow his words and stay quiet. He didn’t have to like it, but if he wanted to pass under the new government’s radar, he couldn’t start trouble. He had heard rumors of what happened to those who dared to rebel, and it sounded very unpleasant.

So Yoongi went about his day, went to his menial job, did his work, and walked back home to eat the government recommended dinner. That of course didn’t mean that he followed all the rules, all the time. Although his job felt meaningless most of the time, he was a hard worker who liked to put his all into whatever he chose to do. (Even though he didn’t necessarily choose this). A fifteen hour work week is the maximum any human is allowed to work. Yoongi goes into his office five days a week, three hours a day, with a forty-five minute break in the middle of his shift for him to “recuperate.”

Every day, he enters numbers from the paper sheets that used to be used in the company, into the new tech system implemented. It was repetitive work, but Yoongi knew he could be so much more productive if he were allowed to work more. So he did. He came in early some days, stayed late others. He pushed the boundaries of his boss, Seokjin. Seokjin was easy-going and usually never yelled at anyone, but Yoongi still didn’t like him because he had too many ideas about what humans should be.

He was constantly watching over Yoongi, asking him if he needed anything or if he could do something for the other male. One day, he even offered Yoongi a snack. Yoongi had started this new system of work only a few weeks ago, and he was months ahead of any other human worker in the company.

He hadn’t been scolded or caught yet, so Yoongi only got more daring. He started taking his data sheets home and accessing the software from home. The boy would work late into the night, enjoying the small feeling of ecstasy he got from the act of disobedience against Earth’s conquerors.

It was on one such night, Yoongi was bathing in the glow of his computer, when there was a knock on his door. It was a sharp rap, confidence in the movement. Yoongi was startled from his work. His eyes narrowed. No one ever knocked on his door.

Another knock. Then the person behind the door cleared their throat. “Adult protective services.”

Panic floods Yoongi’s body. His mind races a mile a minute. His thoughts jump from deciding to run to thinking about fighting whoever is behind that door. Logically, he knew he was too weak to fight, and there was nowhere to run. Yoongi covered up the data sheets and slammed his computer shut, tossing it to a random corner of the room.

He made a quick stop at the mirror, tried his best to neaten up, and opened the door.

“Hello… Can I help you?” Yoongi smiled, looking up at the tall Elaran.

“May I come in?” The Elaran is serious, not answering Yoongi’s question.

“What is this about?”

“We can talk more about this inside. May I come in?”

As if he had a choice, Yoongi nodded and stepped aside, hoping that this social worker wouldn’t decide to look too closely at anything.

“My name is Namjoon. I’m your social worker. I’m here because we got a report that you were logging more than anyone else in your company.”

Shit. “Isn’t that a good thing? I’m just a very hard worker.” Yoongi was panicking, but tried his best to look normal.

“I think we both know that is not the case. You’re going to have to come with me. I’m placing you under protective custody.”

Yoongi stood up. “You can’t do that! You don’t know anything!”

“Actually, I can and will do that. If you come peacefully, this will all just be a lot easier.”

“Hell no! Are you kidding me! I’m not going anywhere!”

Namjoon still has a neutral look on his face as he pulls a patch out of his pocket. He gently grabs Yoongi’s hand and tugs him closer. He sticks the patch on Yoongi’s neck. Suddenly, Yoongi starts feeling very drowsy.

“Wha… What did you do to me?”

“Everything will be okay Yoongi.”
