Meeting the family

Work Text:

Buck wakes up to Tommy holding him from behind and he almost wants to call in sick to work so he can stay in Tommy’s arms for longer but he chooses to get up anyway and get ready to go home. Buck walks out of the bedroom and comes face-to-face with a man in his mid-20s and a woman in her early 20s, who look mortified just at seeing him.

“Is that dad’s-yep-did he also just exist-also yep.” Buck looks at the two people in front of him before looking down at the hoodie he’s wearing, realizing that he’s wearing Tommy’s hoodie.

“I’m guessing you 2 are Tommy’s kids, which makes this entire thing extremely awkward.” Buck says before trying to walk past the 2 people and leave the house.

“Wait! Would you like to stay for breakfast?” Jessica turns to face Evan and laughs lightly at the shock on his face.

“I don’t want to impose on any family moments.” Buck says to the woman as he turns to face her and her brother, just wanting to get out of this embarrassing moment as quickly as he can.

“You wouldn’t be imposing at all, Evan. Me and Jessie have been dying to meet you for 3 weeks now, we would love to have breakfast with you.” The brother says with a sweet smile that reminds Buck of the first time he had seen Tommy’s smile almost 2 weeks ago.

“Okay. But I’m cooking.” Buck says with an easy smile, hoping that he’s making a good impression on Tommy’s family. Buck, Jonathan, and Jessica smile at each other while walking downstairs and Jessie and John go to the living room to watch the news while Buck goes to the kitchen to make breakfast for everybody.

Tommy wakes up alone in his bed, which wouldn’t normally worry him, and he springs up while calling for Evan, remembering that Evan hadn’t gone home last night. Tommy stops panicking when he hears Jessica and Jonathan talking to someone downstairs and he hears Evan’s voice as well as theirs. Tommy gets out of bed and gets dressed before heading downstairs, knowing that he’s probably going to be facing the most awkward conversation in history.

“Morning, guys.” Tommy relaxes when he gets to the living room and Jessica and Jonathan don’t mention anything about why Evan is there. The relief inside of Tommy lasts until Jessica smiles and says something that makes him want to crawl into a hole.

“Dad, we both love you and you know this better than anyone, but if you ever leave this man me and Jonathan will never speak to you again.” Jessica says as Buck smiles sweetly at Jessica and Jonathan (he can never express how thankful he is to have finally learned their names) while sighing in relief at how much they already care for Buck.

“Of course, that’s even a possibility because I’ve gushed about every past partner as much as I’ve gushed about Evan in the last 3 weeks.” Tommy says sarcastically, secretly loving how close Jessica, Jonathan, and Evan have gotten in just a few hours.

“I know that you no longer like waking up alone, but quit being an asshole to your kids.” Buck says, making Jessica and Jonathan let out shocked laughs at Buck teasing Tommy, never seeing someone do that before. Tommy playfully glares at the back of Evan’s head before rolling his eyes and sitting on the couch.

“It’s not my fault that you might start hanging out with my kids more than me now that you guys are close.” Tommy says in false hurt while pouting and crossing his arms, hoping that Evan knows that he’s joking.

“Awe, babe, you don’t need to be jealous. I’ll try and make time for all of you.” Buck says, joking right back at Tommy while giving everyone their breakfast before sitting down on the couch in between Tommy and Jessica.

Tommy blushes when Evan calls him babe but doesn’t mention it, thinking that Evan didn’t realize what he had said and doesn’t actually want to use nicknames like that with him.

“By the way, I can only hang out with you guys for about 2 more hours because I have a shift at 10 today.” Buck says while also eating, not knowing how sad that makes Jonathan, Jessica, and Tommy since they wanted to spend the day with Buck.

“Can you, maybe come back over after you get out of work?” Jessica says hopefully while looking at Buck with wide, pleading eyes.

“It all depends on what kind of shift it is today. If it isn’t too busy then I don’t see why not, but if it’s a really busy and brutal one then I won’t wanna go anywhere but home. How a firefighters shift will be isn’t in their hands, it’s in mother nature’s.” Buck says as he cuddles up into Tommy’s side getting a shy smile out of Tommy.

“The 3 of us kind of wanted to spend today with you, sweetheart. If we can, though, we’ll be okay with spending tomorrow with you.” Tommy says while putting his arms around Buck’s shoulders keeping him tucked into Tommy’s side and kissing Buck’s head gently.

“Tomorrow works perfectly fine for me, babe.” Buck says while laying his head on Tommy’s shoulder and feeling content with this family.

“How about we watch a movie for the last hour and a half before you have to go to work?” Jonathan says while grabbing the remote hopefully.

“I don’t see why we can’t.” Buck says while relaxing more into Tommy’s side and placing a hand on Tommy’s chest. Tommy quickly catches onto the pattern of Evan never saying no to Jessica or Jonathan and he hopes it doesn’t mean what he thinks it means.

“Evan, please let me know if I’m wrong about this, but I hope that you aren’t saying no to Jessica and Jonathan out of fear of me leaving you if you do. Because if that’s the case then I hate to say it but you’re wrong.” Tommy says making Buck’s heart swell while Jonathan finds a movie and puts it on.

“Well, I guess it’s a good thing then that you’re wrong, Tommy.” Buck says while smiling up at Tommy without really moving his head from Tommy’s shoulder, finding it to be too comfortable.
