Work Text:

Ever since Bakugo had agreed to come with him to the carnival, Kirishima had been planning on confessing his crush on the Ferris Wheel. Some might call it cliché but Bakugo was the most important person in his life and Kirishima wanted his confession to be romantic and special. Honestly he was surprised Bakugo had even agreed to come given that he usually had to drag him out of the dorm, so he knew tonight was his chance.

"They've got a Ferris Wheel," Bakugo had noted when they first arrived. He didn't make a snide comment or growl, but just stated it as a fact.

Kirishima had assumed he would have several hours to work up to the confession and panicked that Bakugo was going to suggest them riding it before he was ready. "Yeah, uh, yeah just like most carnivals. Let's wait for it to be dark out to ride that one." He led Bakugo instead towards the roller coasters and breathed a sigh of relief when he followed without a fight.

After the coasters they ended up in a large crowd watching some acrobats, which would have been super fun if Kirishima wasn't so distracted.

"You keep rubbing your arms, are you cold?" He turned to see Bakugo holding out his jacket and realized his nervous twitching had been mistaken for chills. It really wasn't that cold out but he was too surprised to do anything but nod in acceptance. Bakugo helped him into the jacket, which was also a surprise, and then they both went back to watching the performance.

Once the performance was done, Kirishima decided the time was right. "Think its dark enough for the Ferris Wheel?" However, before Bakugo could respond, Kirishima's stomach erupted in such a noisy growl that the group of people next to them looked over and chuckled. Bakugo laughed with them.

"How about we get you some food first?" He put his arm around Kirishima's back and steered him towards the food stalls. Bakugo bought them several different meat skewers, takoyaki, and mochi and Kirishima forced himself to eat even though his stomach was full of butterflies. He kept glancing over at the line for the Ferris Wheel, which was getting longer and longer, so as soon as the food was done he maneuvered them over.

"Ferris Wheel is gonna be the perfect place to watch the fireworks," he babbled as he surveyed the number of people in front of them. "I bet the view is going to be spectacular."

Bakugo didn't look convinced. "Kirishima, no way are we making it onto the wheel before they start. What if we watched from that park by the entrance?"

Kirishima shook his head. It had to be the Ferris Wheel, he had no back-up plan. "Please? We can go after this but I just really want to ride this one."

Strangely Bakugo didn't fight him on it but instead stood by his side listening to his chatter as the line slowly snaked forwards. As Bakugo had predicted, the fireworks started when they were still a good ways from the front but at least they were up high so they could see them ok. Bakugo complained that looking up was hurting his neck and made Kirishima stand still so he could lean his head back against his shoulder, which Kirishima felt was an unexpected bonus.

Finally, they were the fifth group from the head of the line. Kirishima could feel his palms start to sweat and momentarily appreciated how much control Bakugo must have on his quirk.

"Fuckin' finally," Bakugo muttered. But he had a smile on his face so Kirishima knew he was in a good mood. THey advanced several more spaces and soon it would be their turn to board.

"Sorry folks, ride's closing."

"WHAT?!" The words lept out of his mouth on their own and Kirishima slapped his hands to his face in embarassment.

"Line is huge and the carnival doesn't close for another 45 minutes, what do you mean the ride is closing?" Bakugo was much more eloquent but the worker didn't budge.

"Takes an hour to do a full rotation. That means we have to stop loading the seats now so that the ride is empty by the time we close. Sorry everyone." He pulled a rope across the entry and hung a small sign, then turned his back to focus on the controls. Everyone started to disperse but Kirishima found himself unable to move.

"Come on Kiri, it was a good night. We can ride it next time." An arm appeared across his shoulder's and led him away and towards the exit. "I know you really wanted to ride that one but you still had fun, right? I guess we didn't need to ride that first coaster three times but the speed was just unbelievable. And you really liked those carnival games."

Kirishima nodded numbly. It really had been a good night, an amazing night really. Any other night he would have been beaming on the walk home to have had so much fun, especially when it was just the two of them. He played with the hem of the jacket and realized he was still wearing Bakugo's; he hadn't remembered to give it back. The carnival was only a couple of blocks from UA and soon they were back at the gates only a short distance from the dorms.

"Hey, wait a minute." Kirishima felt a tug on his hand as Bakugo removed the arm that had been resting on his shoulder ever since they left the carnival. "You can still see the Ferris Wheel from here."

Kirishima turned around and noted they could indeed still see the Ferris Wheel. Lit up against the night sky it stood out much more prominently than during the day. "Looks really pretty," he lamented.

Movement on his fingers made him realize Bakugo was holding onto his hand and had given his a squeeze. "It does. Should have ridden it when we first got there."

Shit. As usual, Bakugo was right. He had let his nerves get in the way and now he was going to have to come up with an alternate plan for his confession. Kirishima realized Bakugo was still talking and tried to force his worries to the back of his mind until later when he was alone.

"Seemed like it would have been a good place to talk. Just the two of us." Bakugo squeezed his hand again and looked at him meaningfully. "Impossible to get you alone you know," he teased.

"We're alone now." Again the words slipped out of his mouth. Kirishima was having a hard time thinking with the way Bakugo was looking at him.

"I like it better when we're alone," Bakugo said quietly. "We should hang out without the others more."

"O...okay." Kirishima squeezed Bakugo's hand to try and hide how badly his was shaking. He took a deep breath and used all his courage to continue. "As friends...or....?"

Bakugo broke into a wide grin. "Boyfriends obviously. Tonight was a pretty perfect first date, even without the Ferris Wheel."

It was a good thing Bakugo was holding onto his hand, because otherwise Kirishima would have probably fallen right over.

"You were gonna ask me out on the Ferris Wheel?"

Kirishima nodded and forced himself to pull it together. "It was too soon when we first got there and then, well, you know the rest."

"Tch, was pretty obvious. You were red the whole night and kept looking at it and then me and then mumbling to yourself. It was pretty cute." Kirishima thought he was gonna die from happiness, if not embarrassment, until he felt Bakugo tug him in closer only to kiss him lightly on the cheek.

"This was pretty good too," he admitted.

Notes:

Sorry if Bakugo seems OOO. I'm picturing them at that point where they have both been pining and he is also quiet and nervous and unsure as to if its a date or not. He would go back to his usual self once they are back at the dorms and the squad start bothering them :-p
