Work Text:
The last few days had been... difficult.
They had to race against time. They had to fight, save everyone they could and find a cure. She was the leader of the resistance and he was infected. Resting was not an option.
But now that's over. The party, after Eggman's attack moments ago, had resumed and was in full swing with Sonic now in it. They had to celebrate, so the party was a good stress reliever.
And now, without the adrenaline controlling them for the moment, exhaustion finally caught up with them. With her having handed over her position to Jewel and him not having to run around all the time due to the infection, the exhaustion is truly unbearable. They felt like they could faint from exhaustion at any moment.
Amy Rose was sitting at a table, watching everyone having fun, earning a small smile from her. She was exhausted and wanted to go home, or anywhere she could to rest, if her house wasn't standing after all this, but she couldn't, as it would be rude to leave the party suddenly.
Within the crowd, Sonic The Hedgehog forced a smile as he talked to Tails. The truth was he was exhausted. Since he had been infected by the Metal Virus, his nights did not include rest, but rather constant running to prevent the virus from consuming him completely and turning him into a zombot. Now, with the virus eradicated, all he wanted to do was close his eyes and sleep for days.
Sonic looked to the side, looking for Amy in the crowd. He knew she must be exhausted too. Despite everything, Amy always demonstrated relentless strength during battle, leading the resistance with unbreakable determination. She was one of the reasons they were able to win. He admired that about her, even if he never said it out loud.
"Sonic?" Tails' voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Mmm?" Sonic blinked a few times, refocusing on Tails.
"I was asking if you're okay. It looks like you're somewhere else." Tails smiled understandingly.
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Just... tired, you know?" Sonic forced a smile. He didn't want to worry his little brother any more than necessary.
"Sure, it makes sense. We're all exhausted. But man, you deserve a rest more than any of us" Tails patted him on the back. "Why don't you go rest? No one will blame you if you want to sleep now."
Sonic laughed lightly, but it was a tired laugh. He knew Tails was right. As much as he wanted to enjoy the party, his body was crying out for rest. His eyes went back to searching for Amy, until he saw her, sitting alone at a table.
"I think I'll do it." Sonic agreed, saying goodbye to Tails, ruffling his bangs and laughing as Tails tried to move his hand away, before walking towards Amy.
As he approached, Sonic noticed that Amy's gaze was lost, her eyes were half-open and her smile was soft, but visibly tired. She didn't even see him approach until he stopped next to her.
"Hey Ames" Sonic called softly.
She looked up at him, surprised for a moment, but then broke into a warm, if tired, smile.
"Sonic..." her voice was soft. "You should be enjoying the party."
"I could say the same to you," he replied, sitting down next to her. "But to be honest, I think I'm ready to get out of here. How about you?"
Amy sighed, leaning back in her chair.
"I feel like if I get up, I'll pass out halfway home." She let out a light laugh, but Sonic noticed the seriousness behind her words. She was really exhausted.
"Then let's leave before that happens." He stood up and extended his hand to her.
Amy looked at Sonic's outstretched hand for a brief moment, and without delay took it, intertwining their fingers. After so long without being able to touch him, she could finally make up for that lost time.
Sonic smirked, feeling the warm touch of her hand. He lightly squeezed her fingers before gently pulling her out of the chair.
"Come on. I think we both deserve a break" he said, with a tone that mixed joke and sincerity.
Amy nodded, following him towards the exit. As they walked through the now peaceful streets of the city, a comfortable silence settled between the two. They were too exhausted to talk, but there was no need for words. Just being there for each other was enough.
Amy decides to break the silence.
"So... Where are we going?"
"Honestly, any place where I can sleep is great..."
"How about my house then? I know it's far away, but I really want somewhere comfortable to sleep." Amy suggested.
Sonic suddenly then lifted her bridal style and she blushed. Sonic blinked.
"Well, whatever the lady want." And then he ran away.
"Finally... Home sweet home." she muttered, walking in right behind him and closing the door.
Sonic looked around. The house was modest but welcoming. He felt a wave of relief at being in a safe and peaceful environment. The party was great, but being away from the crowd was what he really needed.
"I think we can rest here for a long time." he commented, with a slight smile.
Amy sighed in relief upon seeing the inviting couch in the living room, but then her eyes turned to Sonic, who was visibly more tired than her. He was practically fighting sleep.
"Sonic..." she began, hesitantly. "Why don't you use my bedroom? I can stay in the living room, or-" She tried to suggest, but Sonic interrupted her with a wave of his hand.
"Amy, I'm going to sleep, wherever that is. But I'm sure you need it as much as I do." Sonic scratched his head. "Let me stay on the couch, you sleep on the bed."
"Oh, no no no, you're a guest and you're the more tired of the two of us from having to run non-stop for days! You're not sleeping on the couch, I'm sleeping."
"Amy, we're both tired and I don't want to argue, but I want you to sleep in a bed..." He said tiredly. "Why don't we just... share the bed?"
Amy felt her heart race for a second. They had known each other for so long, but he always ran away from her when she wanted to hug him or when she how much she liked him romantically. At least these days she stopped chasing him and he stopped running away from her, but they both know she still loves him, she said that a month or so ago, and he invited her to go with him, but she had to refuse. They were closer, sure, but they never had to share a bed. Still, Sonic was right: they were too tired to think about anything other than rest.
She looked at him, who now looked a little embarrassed by the suggestion, but also clearly too exhausted to argue.
"It's okay, Sonic. Let's just...sleep." She smiled softly, trying to ease the discomfort of the situation.
They went up to Amy's room together. The bed wasn't big, but it was spacious enough for both of them. Sonic lay on his side, turning his back to Amy so she would feel more comfortable. He closed his eyes, feeling her body finally relax.
Amy lay down next to him, watching the hedgehog's profile for a moment. She knew he was more reserved about his feelings, but somehow, being there with him, sharing that moment of peace, was more than words could express.
She moved a little closer, until she turned him so his back met her bed and Amy laid her head on his chest and hugged him. She thought he was going to push her away, but to her surprise, he hugged her back and she blushed.
To be honest, he missed it. He missed her hugs, the way she linked her arm with his, he missed all of that when he was infected. He wanted to hug her in the moments when something went wrong and comfort her, but he couldn't, he couldn't let her get infected too. He tightened the hug a little and buried his nose in her quills. Now that the Metal Virus had passed, he just wanted to hug her and let sleep take them.
"Good night, Sonic." she whispered.
"Good night, Ames." he replied, his voice low and almost falling asleep.
And so, finally, after days of struggle and exhaustion, they fell asleep side by side. Fatigue won, but the comfort of each other's presence enveloped them, allowing their bodies and minds to find the rest they so needed.
(.They slept for two entire days)
