The Spade King’s ability to manipulate time, often going back and repeating moments as he pleased, clearly meant that Alfred got to see Arthur’s ugliness a lot more than anyone else.
The thought of that made him a lot more anxious than he would have liked, no matter how many times Alfred reassured him (and how many more times he didn’t remember).
Every so often, Arthur asks how long they’ve been married. How long has the cheerful and dynamic Alfred been chained to Arthur and his misery?
Because with how often Alfred goes back, it must be a lot longer for him.
And Alfred always laughs, making some terrible joke about Arthur forgetting their anniversary.
He never really answers the question, and Arthur swears that his eyes look more tired each and every time he asks.
It’s because of this that Arthur wonders if Alfred resents the laws of Spade requiring the King and Queen be married.
It’s on a cold night that he brings up his fears properly, “Alfred… do you ever regret having me as your husband?”[This piece takes place in the Regius Ludus AU, but can be read separately]
