The New Kid

Summary:

Kurt Wagner is a new student at the school and he quickly becomes friends with one of the other students, Peter Maximoff

This wasn't at all supposed to go like this, but I like it anyway lol

Notes:

✨ This is going to be a weird mix of things so bear with me LMAO (I'll label any notes that are important to the fic with the ✨ emoji, you can skip over the rest)

I should probably do that emoji thing with the rest of my fics because man I yap

✨ I took Kurt from X-Men Apocalypse and decided he's like 16 in this, but he has the same kinda skiddish but loveable vibe. Peter is from Days of Future Past bc he's so silly there and I'm taking a situation from X Men Evolution, but that will be in a later chapter

Good lord I watched X-Men Evolution (only the first two episodes and also Cajun Spice so I could see how Gambit was in it) and Remy's proud little smile when Kurt steals the dudes gun on the roof is so fucking cute 🥰 🥰

Anyway I'm never watching that series (I probably will after I finish every other series)

I'm almost done with the 1992 series and I've watched almost all the movies (SO FUCKING EXCITED WHEN GAMBIT WAS IN ORIGINS <33) and next I’m probably gonna watch Wolverine and the X-Men even tho it doesn't look great 😭

Oh also in X-Men (1992) I can't believe Morph was never supposed to be an actual character?? Like hello?? They're one of my favorites

✨ Also at the beginning of this fic I mess with the names just a tad. Just know that the whole time Remy's pronouncing Kurt's last name correctly. The only time it's pronounced wrong is when the W is italicized. There's a bit at the beginning where he asks how it's pronounced, so I wanted to mention that to clear up any confusion :3

✨ I'm kinda taking Kurt's design from X-Men Apocalypse, idk why, maybe it's the clothes and the face shape, but you can imagine he's the fluffy little guy I wished he was shown as in the movies

✨ Rogue's also a teacher. Listen, I put this together before I thought about the timeline ok? She's based off her X-Men '97 character

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Period 1

Summary:

It's Kurt's first day at his new school and he meets a boy with the power of super speed

He gets into trouble because of his hyperactive friend

Chapter Text

Kitty, here. Bobby, here. Piotr, here. Remy was checking the attendance of the class. All names he's seen every day for the last few months. Kurt? He'd never seen that name on the roster before. Kurt Wagner, sounds German.

“Kurt Vagner? Wagner?” Remy looked around at the students for someone new. Ah, tha’ must be him, his eyes paused over a student with blue skin and darker blue hair. Hard ta miss a new student if he's a funky color.

The kid looked up when he heard his name. “Vagner, sir,” he said quietly. Remy nodded and marked him present. Charles said they'd be getting a new kid this week, mentioned he’s pretty shy. Kurt, here. Peter, here.

Remy finished doing attendance and started the class, teaching everyone how to fight with swords today. He handed out foam swords, having to break up groups of people hitting each other with them several times, and called for everyone's attention. “The way ya stand when handlin’ a blade like this,” Remy pulled out a long metal sword for him to use to demonstrate. He got into the proper position, “is ya wan’ one leg forward and the other at an angle. Like tha’.”

The students copied his stance, some having to shift a bit around Piotr to allow him enough room for the position. Kurt observed everyone else following Remy’s lead and tried his best to copy it. After showing the class how to hold the weapon, Remy told everyone they can drop the stance.

“Kitty, Bobby, why don’ y’all come on up ‘ere and show the class wha’ we practiced?” Remy asked, calling the two students up to the front.

Remy put away his weapon while the students walked up to the front. The second he put the sword down, it vanished. “Peter,” Remy warned. Almost as soon as the name left his mouth, the sword appeared in his left hand. “Thank you.”

Kitty and Bobby were waiting for Remy’s instructions at the front of the class. “Righ’,” he said, grabbing wooden swords and exchanging them with the foam ones, “go ahead.”

While the class, and Remy, watched Kitty and Bobby fight, the air suddenly changed around Kurt. He whipped his head around to see a teen with silver hair and goggles standing behind him. “Vhere did you come from?” Kurt whispered.

“Ooh, German, cool,” Peter snickered. He disappeared and reappeared on Kurt's other side. “I came from over there,” he pointed across the yard.

“Teleportation?” Kurt asked.

“Nah, wanna see?” Peter asked. He didn't wait for a response, he just went back around Kurt and put one hand on the back of his neck and the other on his arm.

Kurt looked scared. “Vhat are you doing?” he asked, quietly.

Peter smiled, “This,” and ran off. Before Kurt knew it, he was in the main hall in front of the staircase. He was really dizzy and his vision was blurry. All he registered was Peter saying the word “shit” and vanishing again. Kurt grabbed onto the banister and tried to steady himself when he felt someone, something, touch his arm.

He tried pulling away, but tripped over the steps. He still couldn't see right, all that was in front of him was a blurry blue and brown wall.

“Do not be afraid,” the… thing said, holding out a large, fuzzy hand. “I do not wish to harm you.” Kurt’s vision returned and he took the hand that was being held out to him. “I see you've met Peter,” the man said. “I'm Dr. Hank McCoy, I work with the Professor. You must be Mr. Wagner.”

“Ja,” Kurt whispered. “How do I get back to my class?”

“Where did you come from?”

“I do not know the teacher's name. It vas a fighting class, zhough.”

“Ah, Mr. LeBeau. I'll walk you there, I should let him know what Peter is getting up to again, too.”

“Zhat is zhe silver-haired boy’s name?” Kurt thought back to when Remy's sword was disappearing and reappearing. “He seems very… active.”

Hank laughed, “That he is, yes. He has a habit of using his power to take things that don't belong to him.”

They walked in silence the rest of the way back to Kurt's class and Hank held the door open for him. “Ah, Hank,” Remy said, “what a nice surprise.”

“Not so nice, Remy,” he led Kurt back it's the classroom. “I need Peter, where is he?” Kurt stood with Hank while he talked, not sure whether to go back to the rest of the students or not. He could hear people whispering.

Remy checked his watch. “Class is almost over, why don’ you stay and tell Remy wha’ happened?”

The bell rang and Peter was about to run off when he was stopped by Remy talking to him. “Peter, a word,” he called the boy over to his desk where Hank and Kurt already were.

Remy sat on his desk with one leg up and folded in front of him and the other one down (like the bisexual king he is), much to Hank's disapproval. “Firs’ you try stealin’ my sword, then you drag the new kid outta class wit’ cha? You gotta cut this out, kid.”

“This class is so boring, I want something fun to do,” Peter complained.

“It's sword fightin’, how boring could it be? Gambit loves that you tryin’ ta befriend Kurt, tha's great, but ya can't be actin’ like this in mah class. Do whatever ya wan’ in Logan's,” Hank shot Remy a look which he promptly ignored, “but keep it outta mine.” Remy pat Peter on the shoulder as a silent dismissal and he vanished.

Remy sighed and looked over to Kurt. Before he could even see the panicked look on Kurt's face, he heard the elf start apologizing. “I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I did not mean to skip class. Es tut mir Leid. Es tut mir Leid.”

“Woah, woah,” Remy hopped off the table and put his hands on Kurt's shoulders. Kurt looked down and kept muttering, “Es tut mir Leid.”

“Hey, no, it's okay,” Remy tried comforting him. He looked over to Hank, not sure what to do. Hank looked just as confused. “You're not in trouble,” Remy reassured Kurt, rubbing his arms, “Remy knows you didn't mean to.”

Kurt looked nearly on the verge of crying when he looked back up to Remy. Remy felt so bad for the kid, he wasn't used to comforting people. “You're okay, come ‘ere.” Remy pulled him in for a hug. Kurt had his tail wrapped around his own leg and torso, he was slowly stroking it to try and calm himself down while Remy held him. Remy didn't let go until Kurt wanted to pull away.

“Scott varned me zhat I might not like it here,” Kurt said, wiping his face dry with his jacket sleeve. “I’m sorry, I shouldn't have come.”

“Now wha’ makes ya say tha’?”

“I have been here for one class and I already missed half of it.”

“Peter got bored, and when he gets bored he makes it ev’ryone’s problem,” Remy chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. “I think Hank got stuff ta do, but I got a free period. Wan’ Gambit ta show you to your next class?”

Kurt tilted his head, confused. “Who is Gambit?”

“Oh, that's right,” Hank said. “Mr. LeBeau sometimes speaks in the third person. If he says ‘Remy’ or ‘Gambit,’ he's talking about himself.”

“Beast, ya don' gotta sound so fancy with it,” Rogue laughed, flying out to where Remy was. “Kurt Wagner, eh?” she asked, spotting the small blue mutant.

Vagner,” Remy corrected. “I was gon’ show ‘im around, give ‘im a proper introduction.”

Rogue crossed her arms. “Don't he got a class after break?”

“Logan barely takes attendance, and he'd understand if I was ta show the new student around. Besides, Remy thinks the big guy migh’ scare Kurt off.”

“Vhy? Is zhere somezhing to vorry about?” Kurt asked. Remy noticed his tail was a lot looser around him now.

Rogue shook her head, “Logan's just kinda… big.”

“Like ze Russian?”

“Piotr? Not quite, why don't we just introduce ya to him, sugah?”

“I must go, but yes, you should introduce Kurt to Logan now, before class starts,” Hank said, walking off.

“I gotta go set up for mah next class, have fun Remy!” Rogue said, flying off before the Cajun could protest.

“Vho is zhis ‘Logan’?” Kurt asked.

Remy sighed walking towards to door with Kurt following next to him. “According ta ev’ryone else, he was the newest teacher before me.”

Kurt jogged lightly to catch up, his tail swaying behind him. “He is History, ja?”

Gambit laughed. He really is history. “Yeah, he's even lived through a lot a’ the recent stuff. Guy must be gettin’ up to 200 years by now.”

The elf nodded, pretending to understand. They stopped in front of a classroom door. Remy knocked on it before opening the door, showing a short, hairy man at the window in the back smoking a cigar.

“I zhought Ms. Rogue said he vas big?” Kurt asked, confused.

“What?” Logan asked gruffly, putting out his cigar since there was a student in the room.

“Rogue made a poor choice of words,” Remy clarified, hoping Logan wouldn't be too pissed about it.

Logan huffed. “Who's the kid?”

“Kurt’s new here, I thought the professor would've told ya. Wouldn't wan’ you panicking when you saw a kid you didn’ recognize, would we?”

“The hell is that supposed to mean, bub?”

“Kurt, why don' you step outside for a moment while I talk ta your teacher?”

Kurt quickly left the room, not wanting to get caught up in what was happening. He stood outside the door, waiting to be let back in, when Peter appeared next to him again.

“Hiiii~~~” he dragged out the word, putting his chin on Kurt's shoulder.

“Hello,” Kurt said, with a little wave.

They heard a thunk on the wall behind them. Something was thrown inside the room. Several students stopped outside of it. “Who's in there?” One asked.

“Mr. LeBeau and Mr. Logan,” Kurt answered.

“I'm willing to bet that noise was Mr. LeBeau getting thrown,” one student said. “How does Mr. Logan still work here?” another asked. “I want to see what's happening,” a third whispered.

“Mr. Logan has a reputation,” Peter smiled.

“Not a pleasant one?” Kurt asked, noting everyone's reactions to the noise.

Everyone went silent when they heard yelling. Kurt wrapped his tail back around his leg and waist and started fidgeting with it. Peter seemed completely uninterested in their teachers and looked at Kurt's tail.

“Ooh, cool,” Peter reached out to touch his tail and Kurt slapped his hand away with the spade at the end of it. “Oww,” he whined. “Awesome.”

A bang and and the sound of metal unsheathing came from the room. A cloud of red smoke took over Kurt's vision and when it cleared he saw the end of a transformation from a red and black image to one of a person with gray skin and no nose or hair wearing a blue and yellow suit and a brown jacket. They walked into the classroom and the sounds of fighting stopped immediately.

“Zhat person could teleport. Vhy didn't he teleport into zhe classroom?” Kurt asked.

“Oh, Morph? There's a rule that we can't use our powers in classrooms unless specifically stated, but they're a teacher so I dunno,” Peter shrugged.

Kurt looked scared of the person, but he wasn't telling why. Not with the whole school looking in his direction, at least.

Scott walked through the crowd to Peter and Kurt. “They don't teleport into classrooms because they know Logan would panic,” he said. “Seeing a villain show up at a school for mutants, pairing that with Logan's temper would be a whole mess. Morph turned into a human once to see what it felt like and Logan nearly had a panic attack.”

When the crowd cleared, Kurt leaned close to Peter and asked quietly, “Vhy are my parents here?”

Peter blinked at him, waiting for him to elaborate. Kurt stayed quiet, patiently waiting for a response.

“What?”

“Zhat vas Mystique, ja? She turned into Azazel to teleport. I could not mistake zhat cloud.”

“Is that like a red demon dude who wears a black suit?”

“Ja!”

“That's your-” Peter said loudly.

Kurt wrapped his tail around Peter's mouth to shut him up. “Shh! Vhy is Mystique here?”

Peter licked Kurt's tail to get him to let go. Kurt groaned, disgusted by the action. “That's not Mystique, that's Morph. Even if it was Mystique pretending to be them, Logan would sniff her out immediately and gut her like a fish.” At the horrified look that was spread across Kurt's face at the image Peter grimaced. “Right, that's your mom, sorry.”

The elf shook his head, “It's fine.”

Peter quickly lit up and tapped Kurt on the shoulder repeatedly, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “I'm not the only one with a villain parent!” He said quietly, but excitedly. “My dad is Magneto, oh my god our parents work together.” A fraction of a second passed and Peter was just slightly to the side, he did a whole lap around the school.

The bell rang, announcing that break was over. Morph and Remy left Logan's classroom. “Kurt, I talked to him–”

“Sounded like you fought him,” Peter interrupted.

“Shouldn't you be gettin’ ta class?”

“I have…” he checks his watch, “four minutes and 52 seconds before I have to even move.”

Morph laughed, “I like this kid.” They turned into Peter. The real Peter jumped up and down excitedly. Kurt was still weary of Morph, not wanting to trust them yet.

“Anyway,” Remy continued, “I told ‘im to go easy on ya. Hopefully he won't be causin’ any property damage durin’ this class.”

“...Vhat?”

“Logan can be a little scary,” Morph said, turning into the Wolverine. “He's really just small and cuddly, though.” They knew Logan heard that from inside the classroom and immediately turned into Kurt and teleported away.

“You'll be fine, just get ta class,” Remy said. “You too, Peter.”

“But I have–”

“I get the point.”

Remy walked away and Kurt headed into class, Peter following him in. Logan stood by the desk and held out his hand for Kurt to shake. Kurt took his hand and Logan nodded.

Peter appeared next to him. “Fistbump him,” he said with a big, stupid grin. “You should do it.”

“Vhy?”

“Just do it,” he said, appearing on Kurt's other side. Peter ran around a bit more until Logan held out his hand one time that he vanished. When Peter reappeared he ran face first into Logan's palm. He pulled back, shocked. “I didn't know you could do that.” Logan smiled. “Do it again!” his face instantly dropped.

“Maximoff. Go. To. Class,” he said, angrily.

“But–”

“I heard this outside already, now go!” He shouted.

Peter made a show of sulking as he walked away slowly. Once he left the door he immediately went to find something to do until it was time for him to go to class.
