Work Text:

Song's words echoed in Wolf's mind, and she couldn't get it to stop. It haunted her, screamed at her to remember the most traumatic part of her life.

"You're swift, strong and skilled."

Those were the words her wolf-mother had used before she revealed her true intentions.

It was also the same words that Song had used to describe her youngest daughter only a couple of minutes ago.

Wolf was triggered, to say the least. Being reminded of her past was never a pleasant experience, especially not when it was by her own mom. Song didn't have any ill intentions, Wolf knew that, but it still stung to hear those words coming from a woman that was meant to be safe.

Wolf could feel tears growing in her eyes, but she angrily wiped them away with the back of her hand as her focus returned to chopping up the vegetables that Song was going to use for their dinner later that night.

Wolf's tummy hurt, as if she had just been punched in the gut. Only this time, unlike many times throughout her childhood, it wasn't physically.

Wolf really just wanted to lock herself up in her room, go through her feelings alone, and then come back out as if everything was fine. But there was a nagging voice in the back of her head, begging her to ask Song for comfort.

Song as her mom, and Wolf knew that she could go to her for everything.

Despite the latest words that Song had uttered, she wasn't anything like her old pack. Song was kind, loving and the mother that Wolf had always needed and craved.

Song would never hurt her.

More tears grew in Wolf's eyes, and this time, she didn't bother to wipe them away. Instead, she turned to Song, who had taken a seat by the kitchen table to be able to watch the oven at all times.

Wolf took a couple of steps until she stood in front of her mom. As soon as she entered Song's viewpoint, the woman looked up at her youngest daughter expectantly.

Wolf wordlessly reached for Song, waiting for her to pick up on the cue. Song looked at her with confusion for a second before noticing Wolf's teary eyes. Her own softened, and she accepted Wolf into a warm embrace, settling her on her lap so that she could rock her from side to side, just like she always did when her youngest was upset.

Song didn't know why Wolf was upset in the first place, but she would do whatever it took for her child to feel safe and content. As her mom, it was her job, after all.

Wolf held onto Song for dear life, whining whenever Song moved her. Wolf just wanted to bury her face in her mom's neck and feel safe again.

Song rubbed Wolf's back gently as she hummed on the What We Have Is You melody, hoping that it would soothe Wolf in some way. It always worked with Kipo.

Wolf closed her eyes, letting her feel all the emotions that she had. Her tears began to run down her cheeks, dripping onto the fabric of Song's sweater. When Wolf eventually began to sob, Song was filled with worry.

Wolf never cried. Song knew that it was because the girl thought that it made her weak. Still, out of all the times that Song had heard Wolf cry, it had never sounded like that.

It was almost as if Wolf was going through a heartbreak. Song was confused just as much as she was worried. She never let her hold on Wolf falter, instead only holding her tughter as she kissed her hair and whispered sweet affirmations into her ear.

No matter how long Wolf cried, she would always hold her.

That was the difference between Song and the wolf-mother. And no matter how hard Wolf sometimes found it to unblur the lines, she knew that Song was nothing like the monsters of her past.
