Work Text:
Gin walks into Akutagawa’s room, frowning when she sees him still in bed. He’s wearing his coat, burrowed under the blankets.
“Ryuu, why are you still asleep?” she asks, but he doesn’t stir. “Did you go out in the rain and catch something again?” she mutters, walking over to check his temperature.
He pulls away from her before she can.
“Ryuu, wake up. I don’t want you mistaking me for an enemy, and stabbing me when I’m just helping.”
Akutagawa pulls his eyes open, squinting them at her.
“Hey, did you go out in the rain again?” Gin asks.
“‘m not sick.”
“You’re not?”
“Nope, not at all.”
“Pardon me for not believing you. You seem sick.”
“‘m not sick, I’m just hungover.”
“Excuse me?”
“I got super drunk with Chuuya last night. Turns out we’re both light weights.”
“You were drinking last night?!”
“Yes, stop talking so loud. I have a headache.”
“I will not stop talking so loud. You’re not supposed to be drinking at all! You could have died. Your meds are not supposed to mix with alcohol.”
“Oh, I forgot about that. I’m super medicated, aren’t I?”
“Yes!”
He winces, pulling back a little further.
“Sorry, that was unnecessary. How do you feel?”
“Mostly fine. My head feels funny, but I don’t think I’m going to die, so we’re good.”
“Yeah, you said the same thing when you had a brain bleed, then almost died.”
“But I didn’t die, so technically I was right.”
“Shut up.”
Gin puts the back of her hand against his forehead.
“You don’t have a fever, and it doesn’t seem like anything more than a hangover. You’ll be alright. I’ll make you some tea and toast.”
“Ok, thank you.”
“You’re so much nicer when you don’t feel good. At least half the time. The other half the time you’re a total bitch.”
“Yeah, I’m the worst when I get a fever. It makes me feel all funny, and say mean things. Also makes me forget who I’m talking to, makes me feel like someone is going to attack me.”
Gin sighs, shaking her head.
“I know.”
“Of course you do. You’re my sister, you know almost everything about me cause you love me.”
“I do love you a lot.”
Akutagawa gives her a lopsided smile as she leaves the room.
“Ugh, why does he have to pull this shit when I’m mad at him? He’s so sweet and cute when he acts like that,” she mutters, pulling some tea out of the cabinet.
Then she puts the kettle on the stove with water. It’s not long before she’s walking back into Akutagawa’s room with his tea and toast. He’s staring at his phone like it has something really confusing on it.
“What’s going on?”
“The Boss texted me personally, and I’m trying to decipher what it means.”
“Can I see?”
He nods, holding the phone out to her.
“Here, trade. I’ll take the phone, and you take the tea and plate. Just be careful cause the tea is hot.”
He nods, taking them. She looks at his phone.
“It just says, “Good job on the last mission. Expect more in the future.” I don’t know how that could be any less clear.”
“Oh, I guess I didn’t read it right.”
He takes a bite of the toast, then spits it back onto the plate.
“You don’t like it?”
He shakes his head, scrunching up his nose.
“The crumbs got all over my mouth and tongue. I don’t like it.”
Gin bites her lip, trying hard not to laugh.
“Ok, that’s probably because it’s bread, but I can make something else if you think you can handle it.”
“I can handle anything… anything except bread.”
“Oh, can you? I don’t think we’re talking about the same thing anymore.”
“Hm, I’m not sure.”
He takes a sip of his tea with a thoughtful look.
“This is delicious tea, ma’am.”
“Oh, really? I’m glad that you like it. Can you get up?”
“Yes, but I don’t want to.”
“Can we head to the living room, please? I need to keep an eye on you, but I still have paperwork to do.”
“Fine, if you insist.”
He pulls himself up, grabbing his blanket, and wrapping it around himself. He yawns, blinking sleepily. They walk into the living room with Gin leading Akutagawa. He flinches at the light coming through the blinds.
“I’ll close those as soon as you’re settled on the couch. Did you have work today?”
“Mnhm.”
“Alright, I’ll call you in sick in just a minute.”
She sits him down on the couch, tucking his blanket into the couch to stop him from getting up. Then she closes the blinds, and hands him the TV remote. Once he’s settled, she calls Chuuya.
“Hey, Gin, what’s up?” Chuuya asks.
It’s quiet, but he doesn’t sound like he’s sick so he’s probably in his office.
“Hey, I don’t know who he was going to be working with, but Ryuu isn’t coming in today. I figured that you could figure out who he was supposed to be working with, and let them know. He said that he went drinking with you last night.”
“He did?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I don’t remember him drinking. I guess it was after I was already drunk. I went out with him last night after work. I ended up drinking more than I meant to, but I didn’t know he drank.”
“How did you two get home?”
“I walked him home, I think. You’d have to ask him, because my memories of last night are splotchy at best. I’m sure nobody drove though.”
“Ok, thanks, Chuuya.”
“Yeah, no problem. I’ll make sure that whoever he was working with knows that he’s sick and not coming in.”
“Thank you.”
She hangs up, walking back over to Akutagawa.
“Hey, are you enjoying your tea?”
He’s holding his tea with both hands, sipping it gently.
“Yes, very much so, thank you.”
Gin smiles, leaning back against the couch.
“We should finish binge watching Arrow. We only have one last season.”
Akutagawa nods, and she takes the remote to turn it on.
