“What are they doing?” Fiyero asked in a stage whisper as he loped into Galinda’s private garden.
Nessarose sighed and rolled her eyes. Nevertheless, her actions did little to hide the smile tugging at her lips.
Elphaba and Galinda sat on either side of the central fruit tree. They stared in opposing directions, frowns etched firmly on their faces. One sniffled; the other pouted at the sound but moved only to physically harden her resolve to ignore the former.
“They’re fighting. Probably about something stupid.” Nessarose went back to reading her book.
Fiyero shot her a skeptical glance. “But they’re holding hands.”
“They always do that. I don’t think they know how to go through life without holding hands. …Especially when they fight.”
The boy laughed. “Alright, girls. What was it this time?”
“Ask her!” contrasting voices answered nearly in unison.
Dark waves rippled when Fiyero threw his head back and guffawed. “I am asking her. Both hers.”
Naturally, Galinda and Elphaba responded, “She started it!” as one.
“You know what? I don’t even want to know. Come on, babe. Let’s go do something fun.” Taking his girlfriend’s free hand, Fiyero tried to pull the blonde to her feet.
She sniffled more emphatically and yanked back her hands to throw them around her roommate. “But I don’t want to leave Elphie!”
Elphaba leaned her temple against Galinda’s. “And I don’t want her to go.”
“You two make me sick,” Fiyero joked. Turning, he held a hand out to Nessarose. “Why don’t you and I do something?”
The youngest girl dropped her book, flushing. “Oh, I couldn’t,” she rushed to say. Her flustered gaze flitted to her boyfriend, who, now that she looked at him, had a similar expression on his face to the one Elphaba had worn a moment ago.
Fiyero too belatedly noticed the other boy’s presence. “I guess it’s just you and me, then, Boqqy-Buddy.” Per usual, the prince threw an arm around the munchkin’s shoulders and began to drag him away. He stumbled a second later; Nessarose’s grip on the latter’s hand was iron. “You people!”
