Chapter Text
Izuku blinks at Tenya Iida as he proclaims, “You truly are the superior candidate! You understood the true purpose of the test!”
“I mean, yes? But it wasn’t that hard. We’re all here to be heroes, right? That means prioritizing the rescue,” He says, waving away the praise.
“I see I have much to learn from you!” Iida proclaims, giving him another bow.
“Boom boom boy!” A female voice says cheerily.
“Hahhh!? What do you want, extra?” Kacchan sneers.
Izuku spots the speaker and smiles. “Zero pointer girl! I’m glad you got in!”
“Wasn’t talking to you, Spike,” The brunette sneers back at Kacchan, then beams at Izuku. “I wanted to thank you for saving me from the zero pointer!”
Kacchan gives her a deadly stare and then turns in slow motion to stare at Izuku accusingly.
“Oh, uh. You don’t- That is, you’re welcome.” He fumbles the reply. “Why boom boom boy, though? Kacchan, I didn’t tell her anything.”
“Because you were throwing bombs. Those were so cool! How did you get bombs approved for the test?” She enthuses.
“Oh, I’m a universal witch. Those were potions, not bombs. I’m Izuku Midoriya. Nice to meet you without a giant robot trying to kill us,” He explains.
He manfully ignores Kacchan trying to stare a murderous hole through him. He’s innocent!
She gasps. “A universal witch!? No way! I’m a witch too! What are the odds we both ended up in 1A? I’m Ochako Uraraka. Definitely nice to meet you when neither of us are throwing up or passing out.” She casts a look at Kacchan. “What’s Spike’s problem, anyways?”
Izuku snickers a little. “Oh, he thought you were talking to him because his quirk is Explosion. And the nickname you chose for him has him thinking I told you something I shouldn’t have. Which I didn’t!”
“If you’re here to make friends, you might as well quit now.” A familiar, tired voice cuts in.
“Aizawa-san?” Izuku asks in astonishment.
The librarian/vampire/hero/teacher ignores him in favor of unzipping his bright yellow sleeping bag cocoon. “Your situational awareness is abominable. I’ve been in the classroom the entire time and none of you noticed. If I was a villain, you’d all be dead. Shouta Aizawa, your homeroom teacher. Come up and grab your PE uniforms, then change and meet me at Field Zeta. You have fifteen minutes.”
Then the man turns and walks out of the classroom, leaving behind a pile of neatly packaged with their seat numbers on them uniforms.
Izuku doesn’t hesitate. Maybe the others have fifteen minutes to find the changing rooms, get changed and get to the field, but Aizawa sensei is definitely going to expect him to make it in less than ten. He grabs the package with his seat number on it and scurries out the door, leaving his classmates behind to wonder why he’s in such a hurry. Fortunately, he remembers the map and where the changing rooms are and Field Zeta is pretty close to the main school building. He’s in the middle of changing when Kacchan and Iida barge into the changing room.
“What the hell bit your witchy ass?” Kacchan demands.
“Aizawa sensei is – mmnph – the underground hero Eraserhead and UA’s most legendary teacher, known for his expulsion rate,” Izuku exclaims, tossing his clothes in a locker and slamming it shut. “He’ll probably expel anyone who’s late and-” The door opens again, admitting the rest of the boys. “He knows me and will personally kick my ass if I don’t hurry up.” He catches the still closing door. “Bye!”
Then he speedwalks down the hall as fast as he thinks he can get away with. As soon as he’s outside, he begins jogging. A couple minutes later, he skids to a halt in front of Aizawa sensei.
That gets him a raised brow and no praise, but also no criticism, so he can handle it. Aizawa sensei is not shy about letting people know it if they fuck up.
Only about a minute later, Kacchan and Iida show up in an impromptu quirkless race to see who can get there faster. Both of them are beaten as a zip of electricity passes by them and resolves into a blond boy with a black lightning bolt in his hair and furry ears poking up through the floofy hair. No question about it, the blond is a raiju.
“Good time, Kaminari, but don’t use your magic on school grounds without permission,” Aizawa sensei tells him.
“Oops!” Kaminari smiles widely as Kacchan and Iida catch up to him, Kacchan cursing up a storm.
Surprisingly, most of the boys and all of the girls make it under the ten-minute mark, the boy with multiple arms wearing his shirt backwards and ripped raggedly at the sleeve area coming in last at twelve minutes, obviously the victim of a wardrobe malfunction.
“I’ll let it slide because it’s your first day, but over half of you took more than 8 minutes to arrive. That’s 8 plus minutes in which villains are killing civilians. Do better,” Aizawa sensei tells them; as expected, pulling no punches.
Then they do their QAT, with Aizawa sensei shortly into it threatening them all with expulsion if they slacked off.
Izuku does okay on most of the tests, but somehow manages to accidentally blow up the ball for the ball test instead of throwing it a long ways. He turns to Aizawa sensei with a sheepish expression. “So, uh, I guess that’s a zero?”
Aizawa rolls his eyes and tosses him another ball. “Whatever you just did, don’t do it again.”
“Thanks, Aizawa sensei!” He chirps gratefully. Well, if he can’t use an explosion to propel the ball like Kacchan, then wind should work.
“400 yards,” Aizawa reads off the results. Not bad!
Then they’re shown their composite scores and the girl with ear jacks, who looks like she wants to cry, is in last place.
“No one is being expelled today. It was a logical ruse,” Aizawa sensei says like a liar.
Jiro bursts into tears of relief.
Aizawa sensei looks tired. “Your syllabuses are on your desks, as are extra copies of the school handbook. If you haven’t read it, do so tonight. It covers everything the orientation lecture covers, with much less rambling. If you are in violation of the rules, it will be held against you, even if you don’t know about the rules.”
“Man, I was scared that he really meant to expel someone,” Sero says, not quite quietly.
“It was obvious that it was only meant to motivate us into doing our best,” Yaoyorozu says. Then backtracks at the looks she gets, “I’m sorry. Should I have said something?”
“Obviously, she says,” Ashido grumbles.
Izuku clears his throat, knowing very well that their vampire teacher can hear every word. “Oh, actually, he was entirely serious about that. He expelled his entire class last year and he won’t hesitate to expel anyone who doesn’t keep living up to his expectations. So, uh, yeah. He was serious.”
Yaoyorozu looks disturbed.
Iida nods and chops his arms. “Midoriya is correct. My brother told me about it last year. They are close friends.”
“I…see,” She says hesitantly.
Kaminari drops an arm around Izuku’s shoulders, startling him. “Man, how cool is it that half our class are supernaturals and our teacher is a vampire?”
Hagakure laughs. “Okay, I know he looks like the living dead, but its kind of rude to call him that.”
“Also, he’s standing right there and can hear us.” Shouji points out.
Izuku resists the urge to roll his eyes. “Yes, it is, but you’re not supposed to say anything until our human classmates are introduced to the concept that supernaturals exist outside of myths, Kaminari.”
“Ooooopsss! But seriously, I thought they knew. This is UA, after all,” Kaminari says.
“Wait, you mean he’s actually a vampire?” Ojiro asks in confusion.
“I thought vampires sparkled.” Kirishima is staring at Aizawa sensei.
“That’s a myth from a pre-quirk era book,” Izuku elucidates. “And yes, he’s a vampire. He’s not dead though, because he’s a daywalker. Only nightwalkers are dead. But it is why he naps during the day.”
“Huh. I’d have thought Vlad King would be the vampire, not Aizawa,” Sero says after a moment.
“He’s a dhampir,” Izuku answers without thought. “That’s a half vampire. And both vampires and dhampirs are allowed to get blood from blood banks, so you don’t have to worry about them snacking on you.”
“Are vampires common, then?” Ojiro asks, looking intrigued.
“No, not at all. In Japan it’s around 1 in 10,000 people are vampires. Most of those are daywalkers, simply because it’s more convenient to stay hidden. Nightwalkers tend to be very reclusive. But if I had to choose between tangling with a daywalker or a nightwalker, it would be a daywalker. Daywalkers are very fast and strong, but nightwalkers are faster and stronger. Most species wouldn’t stand a chance against a rogue nightwalker,” He explains.
“Raiju would!” Kaminari exclaims.
Aizawa sensei snorts. “Alright, witchling, quit giving my secrets away. And, pup, don’t be arrogant. Ever heard of Faraday cages? Always be prepared for your enemy to know more than you think they do.”
Kaminari flinches.
Izuku pats his hand. “Sorry, sensei.”
The group finally starts back towards the classroom.
“Okay, so we can’t talk about Sensei any more, but how about we guess who’s supernatural in our class?” Hagakure proposes. “I think Kaminari, Midoriya, Uraraka and Bakugou are supernatural!”
Kacchan snorts. “Well, you got three of the four right.”
“And Kaminari’s not allowed to guess, because he already knows,” Jiro stipulates.
“Awww!” Kaminari whines, ears flattening. “Not fair. I could’ve told you what everyone is, too.”
“You can tell us later, Sparky,” Kacchan says…surprisingly nicely for him. Does Kacchan actually like someone for once?
~
By the time they get back to the classroom, Izuku has learned that people really suck at telling who is what supernatural and who is human. Of course, Shinso stirring the pot by suggesting that Kaminari just idolizes raiju because he looks like he thinks one would look like in human form and is actually a pikachu in disguise doesn’t help. And by general consensus, no one is admitting whether or not the guesses are right.
The guesses go like this:
Aoyama – fae
Shinso – fae (Shinso’s clearly not European and fae are European, so)
Kaminari – pikachu (fictional)
Sato – human
Uraraka – witch
Izuku – witch
Kacchan – werewolf
Jiro – human
Ojiro – monkey king race (fictional)
Sero – spiderman race (fictional)
Todoroki – witch
Yaoyorozu – human
Shouji – shiva race (he’s pretty sure there IS a six armed race, but not called that)
Tokoyami – tengu
Iida – speed demon (probably not a thing, but he doesn’t know much about demons)
Asui – kappa (water yokai)
Ashido – fae (being pink doesn’t make someone a European supernatural)
Kouda – human
Kirishima – rock golem (seriously? golems are constructs, not a race)
Hagakure – nurikabe (invisible wall yokai)
Izuku can’t literally see or smell who is what race like Kaminari can, but he’s pretty sure that the only ones they got right are him and Uraraka, and only because Uraraka had exclaimed about them both being witches before homeroom started.
Kacchan is wheezing like he has asthma but Izuku knows it’s because he’s trying hard not to laugh in their faces.
“Okay!” Hagakure claps her hands together. “Now that we have our guesses, how about we go around and correct the record? I’ll go first. I’m human.”
“As am I!” Iida declares, chopping his arms.
“Human,” Kacchan wheezes.
“Universal witch.” Izuku admits.
“I am human, to my regret,” Tokoyami says.
“Yeah! Being tengu twins would be cool!” Dark Shadow affirms.
“I’m part giant, but mostly human,” Sato confesses.
Kouda signs something.
“Rockface says he’s half mountain god,” Kacchan translates.
“I am human. I think my parents will be entertained at being mistaken for kappa, though,” Asui says thoughtfully, a finger to her lips.
“Siren,” Shinso tells them laconically.
“Part mermaid,” Jiro admits.
“I’m half raiju!” Kaminari declares. “The other half is human, not pikachu. I don’t think pikachus are actually real, but it would be cool if they were.”
“They’re not real,” Izuku assures him.
“I’m human. Being a rock golem sounds manly, though!” Kirishima announces, bashing his fists together.
“Gravity witch!” Uraraka announces proudly.
“I’m human. I knew about supernaturals because my father is a hero,” Todoroki confesses, blank faced.
“I’m human too,” Ojiro tells them. “My tail is my quirk.”
“Marvelous! I’m part tennan and part human. I naturally glow!” Aoyama proclaims.
“I’m actually an acid witch, not a fae,” Ashido admits. “My childhood friend is a color witch and she got mad and changed my colors when we were little. Only everyone thought it was part of my quirk so we ended up having her not reverse it once she got done being mad. My hair is naturally pink, though! And the horns are a mutation passed down from my dad’s quirk.”
“I’m human! Being a spiderman sounds cool, but I’m pretty sure that’s just a myth,” Sero says cheerfully.
“Creation witch,” Yaoyorozu confesses. “I don’t actually need to know the chemical formulas for producing things. I do need to know the properties of the materials and the proper shapes of all the components, though.”
“That’s cool!” Ashido enthuses. “Can you create living things?”
Yaoyorozu grimaces. “Yes, but they only live for a few hours, so I don’t do that anymore.”
“Yikes!” Kaminari looks a little horrified, as does most of the class.
“Midoriya, since you’re a universal witch, would you be willing to ‘talk shop’ sometimes?” Yaoyorozu inquires.
He blinks. “Oh, um. Of course. I’m not very good at creation magic, though.” Izuku produces a pair of chopsticks with some concentration. “This is about the extent of what I can make, along with some slightly misshapen dishes.”
“That’s okay. I’m sure I can help you with that,” She reassures him.
Absently, he hands the chopsticks to Kacchan, who grunts and shoves them in his bag to add to his collection of explosion proof chopsticks.
“How are you with gravity magic?” Uraraka demands.
Izuku blinks at her. “I’ve never tried it. I’m banned from trying it unless Aizawa sensei is overseeing my attempts.”
She tilts her head in confusion. “Do you know Aizawa sensei? You knew he’s a vampire and he knew you’re a witch.”
“Yeah, I do. He’s the librarian for the occult library I have access to,” He admits.
Kaminari laughs. “Wow. Now I’m picturing him sitting at a library check out in that sleeping bag of his.”
He smiles a little. “No, he doesn’t do that. He does sleep behind the desk when I don’t need his help, though.”
“Lazy fucker,” Kacchan opines.
“Kacchan, be nice. He holds three jobs. He has to nap when he can,” Izuku scolds.
That gets him a wordless grumble of reluctant agreement. He knows that Kacchan actually respects Aizawa-san after he came out of the library and talked to Kacchan’s parents about the hearing issues he was starting to have. Aizawa convinced them to get Kacchan’s ears pierced, and then proceeded to enchant a few discreet pairs of studs to act as hearing aids and hearing protection and to match his skin tone so it looks like his ears aren’t pierced unless someone has really good vision or is really close. Since Kacchan was starting to go deaf from his own quirk before that, Aizawa earned a lot of respect from him by saving him from hearing aids.
“Hey! Don’t forget me! I’m a witch too!” Ashido complains. “Can you do acid magic?”
Izuku perks up. “I can! I specialize in potions, but acid is one of my go-to spell casts. I only can do two different PHs right, though. The ‘melt through metal at a concerning speed’ one and the ‘cleaning vinegar’ one.”
“Alright! Acid buddies!” She exclaims, holding her hand up for a high five.
He high fives her.
“C’mon, nerd,” Kacchan grumbles. “You can talk shop with Pinky, Round Cheeks and Ponytail on your own time. If we don’t go now, we’ll miss the train.”
“Oh! It’s nice to meet you all. See you tomorrow!” He apologizes and follows Kacchan out the door.
