Work Text:
Class 1A had a mystery. This mystery revolved around an absent person. Someone they have all just heard of from the last source one would expect. Bakugou. It started day one.
Bakugou was the resident hot head. The loud mouth. The person who hated everybody. Anything out of his mouth had to be taken with a grain of salt, and many learned very fast to stay far from him. Only a few in the class, i.e. Kirishima, took it upon themselves to try and befriend him from the start, so it was only Kirishima that heard the first reference.
It was during the quirk apprehension test. Everything had been going smoothly, but at one point, their teacher Aizawa-san, used his quirk. Most of the students went quiet, a little afraid of the glowing red eyes and floating hair. Who was this hero? Then Kirishima heard a small mutter from Bakugou.
“Oh fuck,” Bakugou murmured. “It's Eraserhead. He’s gonna lose his shit when I tell him that he’s my teacher.” Followed by a small chuckle. Kirishima turned to Bakugou in shock, but by the time he faced him, Bakugou’s face was back in the neutral scowl that all had already learned was his default. Kirishima just let it go and turned back to the front, mystified.
More comments like that followed over time slowly and rarely at first, but as time continued and Bakugou grew more used to the class, the comments came more frequently.
At lunch, Bakugou could be heard mentioning how someone would like the current dish made by Lunchrush, it was almost always when they had katsudon. He would also mention how he would have to get an autograph for them when around some of their pro-hero teachers.
In class it could be heard occasionally from him about the material. Times like, “I wish he was here to explain this concept.” or “Man, he’d die to learn more about this.” or “I gotta get his help with this quirk bullshit.”
The first time All Might appeared before the class, they saw Bakugou show excitement and fascination. The boy’s eyes seemed to glow, and he noticeably leaned forward in his seat. This was new and rare.
“Holy shit! He never told me!” Bakugou exclaimed under his breath, but loud enough for those around to hear him. Bakugou could later be seen talking to All Might with wide hand gestures and a smirk on his face.
Were all of these about the same person? No one was entirely sure, but then they started to get a name. A weird name, but a name all the same. Deku.
The first time was when Kirishima tried to stop Bakugou from leaving after class to join in on some fun. No one was expecting him to stay, so he did not disappoint in that aspect, but he still shocked them.
“No idiot, I gotta get home, Deku’s coming by.” Then he walked out the door.
“De…ku…?” Uraraka repeated.
“Who is Deku?” Mina exclaimed.
“Do you think that that is the ‘he,’ Bakugou always mentions?” Kaminari questioned. Chaos broke out for a bit, until Iida stood up with his normal hand chopping motions bringing everyone to order.
“Calm down! If you want to know, then ask him, but it is not our business!”
And time continued with a little grumbling and speculation from the most nosy of the class.
Deku was mentioned more and more, and no one knew what information to expect each time.
One time when the girls were hanging out in between classes they talked about the latest boy band that came out. Shockingly, Bakugou gave his input, “They are just a copy of BTS, you know. They really aren’t worth the hype.”
All of the conversations around the classroom died out as they all turned to Bakugou in shock.
“You listen to them, Bakugou?”
“Heh,” he scoffed with an added eyeroll. “I wouldn’t if I could, but Deku makes me. That’s his favorite genre of music.”
That did not lessen the shock at all. Who was this person that was able to force Bakugou to listen to music, and that it was boy bands of all things?
When Kirishima and Kaminari held a video game night with some of the other boys in class, they were shocked when Bakugou showed up.
“Hey Bakubro!” Kirishima exclaimed. “We weren’t expecting you to come!”
“Tch,” Bakugou looked annoyed. “I made the mistake of mentioning it to Deku and he forced me to come.” As Bakugou pushed through them to enter the house, Kirishima and Kaminari just looked at each other. Who the fuck was this Deku? But that wasn’t the only mention of Deku that night.
Hours later when the boys called it a night after being beaten repeatedly in every game by Bakugou, they all complained.
“What the hell dude, did you have to do us that way?” Kirishima whined, still staring at the game over visible on the screen with Bakugou’s character jumping in victory.
“Yeah, man, you didn’t even give us a chance!” Kaminari joined in the drama with a flare as he tipped over the armrest beside him.
“That was nothing,” Bakugou crowed. “I have never won against Deku in any video game match. Fucker’s insane. You all are just weak as shit.”
Kirishima and Kaminari couldn’t help but pale a little at that information. Who?!
That Monday before Bakugou got to class, they updated the whole class on the latest Deku information.
“So he can force Bakugou to do anything, but when we try we get blown up!”
“He also is apparently a beast at video games. We didn’t stand a chance against Bakugou, but he said that he has never won against Deku!”
The class started to mutter to themselves. Trying to figure him out. Is he a friend, an old classmate, a cousin, a sibling, a parent, anything is up for grabs at this point (especially after they learned he calls his own mother Old Hag). Also why is this person who can seemingly do anything called useless? They never came to any conclusion before Bakugou walked in and all conversation stopped.
But then it escalated even more.
Next time it happened was during training.
Bakugou could be seen with a small notebook in his hands and when he wasn’t up to fight or train, he could be seen observing his classmates and writing things down. Only Kirishima was brave enough to ask him what it was for.
“Hmm?” Bakugou looked up from his notes. “Oh, this is for Deku. He’s a quirk nerd and always wants to know more about what quirks are out there. I promised to keep him updated on all of yours.”
“Oh.” Kirishima said. That information got passed right along to the rest of the class.
Bakugou was always good at any fight. He could always come out on top against any foe and was brilliant with mid battle strategy, but then he got even better. Which was just unfair. He started to use classmates' weaknesses against them, and he seemed to be able to predict what they would do.
This time it was Aizawa that brought it up during an after battle critique.
“Bakugou, it was smart, using Aoyama against his own teammate Tokoyami and being able to set them up without them figuring it out. How did you come up with that so the whole class can learn.”
“Hah,” Bakugou scoffed. “That wasn’t from me.”
“What do you mean?”
“Oh, I have talked to Deku about all of your quirks, and he has given me a comprehensive list of how to fight and win against all of you, any combination. Plus we tend to spar together weekly,” he finished with a shrug.
“What!?” The whole class exclaimed.
“What did he say?”
“How does he know all of that?”
“Who is this person?”
“Do you have his notes?”
People were all talking and yelling over each other.
“QUIET!” Aizawa roared as he activated his quirk. Instant silence overtook them all.
“Bakugou, do you have those notes?”
“Of course not, they are all written in his code and locked in his safe. We are not stupid enough to leave information like that lying around where anyone could get it.”
“Would I be able to see them sometime?” Aizawa asked.
“I’ll have to ask him and give you the information to decode it, but we’ll see.”
Class continued on after that, but everyone was a little more weary of who this Deku could be. The class was so confused by all the information given to them, but the confusion only grew.
The most shocking revelation came during one of their government and law classes.
Midnight had moved on to a new topic for the class discussion.
“Today we are going to be talking about the Quirkless Law Act. This was an act made years ago to protect quirkless rights in the world.” Midnight goes on to explain.
Mutters could be heard throughout the classroom.
“Man it would suck to be quirkless.”
“I feel like it must be scary to be quirkless in today’s society.”
Bakugou couldn’t help but roll his eyes at all the comments he heard.
“It is scary to be quirkless which is why the law was made, “Midnight continues after hearing a few comments. “This law is for their safety since they tend to be a bit more helpless.”
At this Bakugou outright scoffed. What the fuck are these idiots saying?
“Dude, that's not cool man,” Kirishima said looking at Bakugou in disappointment.
“Yeah, just because you have a strong quirk doesn’t mean anything for those who don’t have a quirk at all.” Kaminari went on to berate Bakugou as well.
“Bakugou, that is outright disrespectful to the quirkless community!” Iida yelled while waving his hands beside his head. “They can’t protect themselves!”
Bakugou just laughed. “None of you have ever met a quirkless person, have you?” He eventually was able to get out leaning back on two legs of his chair. At the sounds of disagreement heard around the room, Bakugou continued.
“I have known someone who is quirkless my entire life and he is the most capable fucking person I know. If you told him to his face, he was helpless because he was quirkless, you would be decked in the face.”
“What do you mean Bakugou-kun?” Uraraka asked hesitantly.
“I spar with Deku multiple times a week with and without my quirk, and he is the only one that has been able to beat me. He has never had a quirk and never will, but he is the strongest and best fighter I know. So you all saying that quirkless are helpless is fucking hilarious. Talk to a quirkless person and tell me what you think when you are done. If you don’t have a power in this overpowered society and are still kicking, you are fucking stronger than anyone around you.”
The class was silent during Bakugou’s speech. No one has ever heard him stand up for anyone or group, especially not one that most people considered weak.
“Wait!” Kirishima suddenly exclaimed. “ Deku is quirkless and he has beaten you in a fight?”
Shock rippled through the room as the class suddenly understood what he meant.
“Yeah, idiots, Deku and me have been training in various martial arts and fighting styles. He really has trained me with and without my quirk. Of course, he can beat me.”
Instead of shock, it was now fear that filled the class. Once again the thought repeated by everyone in the class was just who is this Deku?
After school finished for the day and Bakugou left, many of the students remained. Among themselves they speculated who Deku is and what he looks like.
“He has to be a beast of a man that is tall and strong. He is probably Bakugou’s sensei.” Kirishima said as he flexed. “No one else could be as manly.”
“But the way Bakugou-kun talks about Deku makes me think he is our age.” Uraraka added on.
“No way man,” Kaminari added his input. “There is no way someone our age, especially quirkless, could beat Bakugou in a spar. Plus this is the guy that has detailed notes of our quirks and weaknesses. That comes from experience!” Many nodded along with Kaminari’s thoughts.
“What if it is someone Blasty likes!” Mina suddenly exclaimed, ever the romantic. The entire class laughed at that thought. There is no way Bakugou would like someone.
“It’s definitely a mentor to him,” Sero agreed with the previous thoughts. With that the class moved on. Bakugou continued to mention Deku, and it never got any clearer who this person was or who he was to Bakugou.
Then the class moved into the dorms. With spending more time around one another, it became obvious how often Bakugou left campus and was also seen texting frequently. Someone was bound to find out who Deku was. That someone, or someones, was the self proclaimed Bakusquad.
It happened one evening when they were all hanging out in Bakugou’s room playing games. In the middle of it all, Bakugou got a call. He paused the game much to the displeasure of everyone in the room.
“Shut it you bastards!” Bakugou exclaimed. Then he turned to his phone to respond.
“Hey Deku.”
The whole squad quieted, or as much as they could as they all scrambled to get closer to the phone.
“Wait Blasty! Is that the Deku?” Mina yelled.
“Shut the fuck up!” Bakugou yelled back as he let out a small explosion to try and push them all away. Laughter could be heard over the phone, and resulted in them getting even quieter to try and hear better. Faintly they could hear Deku say, “Sorry for interrupting your time with friends Kacchan.”
Kacchan, they all mouthed to each other. Kaminari looked faint while Mina looked like the cat that caught the canary.
“You didn’t interrupt anything important, idiot.”
“HEY!” They exclaimed.
“Kacchan, be nice to your friends.”
“They ain’t my friends!”
“That’s rude,” Deku said at the same time as Kirishima.
“It ain't rude if it is true.” Bakugou grumbled as he stood up. “But why did you call, moron.”
Bakugou started to walk out the door but right before he left, the group could hear Deku’s response.
“Oh can’t I call my boyfriend for no reason…”
“What”
“The”
“Fuck”
“BOYFRIEND!?” Mina exclaimed over the other three boys. “Oh. MY. GOSH. I have to tell the others!”
“”Wait!” Kirishima stopped Mina from leaving by grabbing her ankle. I don’t think we are supposed to know! If he wanted us to know, he would have told us right?”
“But boyfriend!” Mina and Kaminari whined together.
“We have to support Bakubro’s trust in us. It isn’t manly to tell his secrets!”
It took some convincing, but eventually they all agreed with Kirishima. Mainly, they finally all agreed with the thought that Bakugou would kill them if they told. Little did they know that Bakugou could care less about people knowing. In actuality, Bakugou was clueless that Deku was a mystery at all.
So as time went on, they helped to protect his “secret boyfriend.” They would constantly interrupt him if he started to talk about Deku and helped to steer the conversation away from Deku when the class got on a tangent. It lasted like this for a few months. The Bakusquad got really tired as they started to realize just how much Bakugou would talk about his boyfriend.
It all finally came to a head one day when Bakugou was sick.
The whole class was in the common room doing various activities. Iida, Urararka, and Todoroki were working on homework. The Bakusquad huddled around the TV playing games while the rest watched on. On one of the side couches lay Bakugou buried under a mass of blankets and the occasional sniffle or cough could be heard emanating from his mountain of blankets.
Kaminari got up to get snacks from the kitchen and as he passed the door, he heard a knock. It seemed like no one else heard it, so he shrugged and opened the door. He had to look down a bit and when he did, he made eye contact with the most adorable boy he had ever seen. He was a short, seemingly thin boy about his age (his clothes seemed to drown him with how big they were and did his shirt say pants?). His hair and eyes were green and there seemed to be literal sparkles in his eyes. Freckles coated his face and the widest smile pushed his cheeks up into his eyes also revealing a singular dimple on his right side.
“Oh hello there,” Kaminari said as he leaned towards the boy. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh! I am looking for class 1-A.”
“That’s us.”
“Oh perfect!” The boy exclaimed as he walked in, past Kaminari. “I’m Midoriya Izuku!”
“I’m Kaminari Denki, can I help you find someone?”
“I’m looking for Bakugou Katsuki.” Kaminari winced. This kid looked too innocent to be yelled at or exploded by an angry Bakugou, but what was he to do?
“He’s on the couch in the common room.”
“The common room?” Midoriya’s face dropped and Kaminari felt a slight chill run down his back. Hm, he thought, better close the door, seems to be chilly outside. “Thank you.” Midoriya said as he turned towards the room Kaminari pointed out.
Kaminari shrugged once again and started to head back to the kitchen when he stopped in fear at the words that came from the small boy's mouth.
Midoriya took a deep breath and yelled, “BAKUGOU KATSUKI WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?!”
People whipped around. Who had the guts or was stupid enough to talk to Bakugou that way? When they all looked, all that could be seen was a small green haired boy that looked like sunshine incarnate, but a little angry. Silence overtook them all as they braced for an explosion to be let off on the nice looking boy, but instead Bakugou threw off the blankets on top of him, sat up straight, and said, shocked, “Deku?”
Now, one would think that the class would erupt into chaos at that, but instead the silence seemed to grow thicker and tenser. What they all thought.
“What are you doing here?” Right after Bakugou asked his question, he dissolved into coughs. Everyone winced at how rough it sounded.
“Well, you idiot, I was in my meeting with Nezu when he told me you were sick instead of you telling me yourself.” Deku had his arms crossed, and his eyes narrowed on the hothead.
“It’s nothing Deku.” Bakugou coughed again.
“Yeah, nothing,” Deku said, sounding skeptical.
“What about your evening classes?” Bakugou asked.
Deku replied as he moved to sit beside Bakugou on the couch. He took it upon himself to move a few of the tens of blankets that laid on his boyfriend. The class continued to sit in awe.
“A villain attacked the college campus so all classes for the evening are canceled. I planned on coming to visit you anyway, but Nezu said you were sick. So I brought your favorite spicy ramen with me. “ Deku seemed to whip a to-go container out of nowhere further baffling the other students. Where had he hidden that? “My question is why are you here and NOT in your room?” Midoriya glared at Bakugou.
The temperature of the room seemed to drop a few degrees.
Thoughts were streaming through all of their minds and they all seemed to be of the same mind.
Who is this? Is this the Deku? He is so young! He is so adorable. How can he speak to Bakugou that way? How has he not exploded yet? Does this kid have a death wish? How can someone so adorable have such a mean glare? Thoughts went on and on as they all watched like bystanders watching a car crash.
Bakugou, looking uncharacteristically meek, responded softly, “I didn’t want to be alone.”
All at once, the fire that had burned behind Deku’s eyes disappeared. The girls and some of the guys couldn’t help but coo at the sight.
“Shut up will ya!” Bakugou growled out as he rubbed his temples, voice cracking. His head had started killing him and even that noise was just too much.
Deku softened even more and reached out for the blond. He grabbed his head and helped him lay down on his lap. He then proceeded to gently card his fingers through the other’s hair pressing gently to massage his scalp. All hearts softened at the sight while simultaneously becoming more and more shocked at what the resident hot head was allowing this other boy to do.
Almost as if sensing their thoughts and confusion, Deku looked up at the group.
“I guess I should introduce myself,” He started. “I am Midoriya Izuku, but this dummy only calls me Deku. I am Kacchan’s boyfriend.”
Kirishima saw all his and the bakusquads hard work go down the drain in that one instance.
“WHAT?!” screeched Hagakure.
“Who?!”
“How?”
“Why?”
“KACCHAN?!”
“Bakugou’s boyfriend? As in our Bakugou?”
“How did we not know?”
“As in Deku?”
“Quirkless…”
“Kacchan!?”
Voices overlapped and the volume started to steadily increase. Somehow over the loud din of noise Deku heard a soft groan from Bakugou who also tried to bury himself further in the greenette’s lap as if to escape the noise. Feeling protective, Deku covered Bakugou’s ear with his hand and raised his legs a bit to box the sick boy in to help him. An enraged glare pierced through the students, and one by one, as they noticed, they fell silent. The temperature seemed to drop even more as this boy who seemed like a ball of sunshine turned into someone they feared more than a villain.
“He has already told you to shut up once,” Midoriya growled out lowly sending chills down everyones’ spines. “If you don’t, I will have to shut you all up myself.”
No one dared make a noise after that. As one, a singular thought ran through all of their heads.
Oh yeah, this is the boy that can beat Bakugou even though he is quirkless.
“Don’t test me.” After that last sentence, he bounced back into the smiling boy that first appeared in their dorms. “Now if any of you all have questions, I would be happy to answer! But quietly.”
“Don’t you dare, Deku.” Bakugou tried to ground out, but Deku just lightly bated him on the shoulder in response.
“You don’t get a say Kacchan. So who’s first?”
