Kita swung her bags around and twirled in excitement. “Hitori-chan, I’m so glad you invited me out today! I had such a good time, we need to do this more often!”
Hitori smiled and nodded, her cheeks growing a little red. I had to build up a lot of confidence to ask Kita out on a trip to the mall. But I’m glad I did... it was a very nice day with just the two of us.
Kita ran ahead on the sidewalk outside the mall and turned around to give Hitori a wide grin, showing all her teeth. “I don’t know why, but I feel the urge to do even more today!”
Me too. Hitori thought. Normally I’d get tired from being around so many people, but being with Kita just makes me feel full!
Hitori reached her hand out as Kita began to run onto the crosswalk of a wide boulevard they needed to cut across. “W-Wait, Kita-chan!”
Kita turned around and giggled, offering her hand to Hitori. “Come on, Hitori-chan! This isn’t scary, either!”
Hitori’s jaw dropped. D-Do I take her hand? I should trust Kita, she brings me out of my shell all the time. What am I, a little girl who can’t cross the street?
“Oh-Okay. Let’s go.” Hitori said as she grabbed Kita’s hand with her own, and they started to traverse the crosswalk together.
Hitori could only focus on her hand, whose fingers were interlocked with Kita’s as they walked across the street. This is the first time we’ve ever held hands... I know it’s to just cross the road, but it makes me feel good!
Similarly, Kita’s large world shrunk to only Hitori as they walked together. I found a way for us to hold hands. She’s panicking right now. She’s so, so cute..!
If only these girls had paid better attention to their surroundings, they could have had a better chance at noticing the truck speeding towards them, with no intention of stopping.
To Hitori, it all happened in an instant.
The truck only registered in her brain by the time it was too late, with only seconds to spare. The tires, the horn blaring, the impact of it all hit her at once. However, as she felt the force punching her body, she realized it wasn’t anything lethal. It wasn’t the truck that hit her, but Kita shoving her out of the way.
Hitori gaped as she flew through the air, the truck flying towards Kita. N-No! Kita! Hitori thought. I asked her to come… I thought I got so far, and now… now…
Now she’s going to die. And it’s all my fault. It’s all my fault. Hitori squeezed her eyes shut as the truck neared Kita, with only half a second left to spare. She almost screamed as she heard the crunching of metal, landing on the ground with a thump. But the pain in her body was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.
She’s gone. She’s dead. And she was selfless enough to throw me out of the way too… Hitori felt tears leak out of her eyes. She couldn’t bear to open her eyes… not with the thought of being able to see what had happened to… to…
Hitori gasped for breath, her eyes squeezed shut. She saved me. And I… I have the audacity to love her? She’s done more for me in our time together than she could ever know… and ever will know.
Hitori decided she had to look. She’d missed Kita’s final moments, but… her parents deserved closure. She had to see Kita, even if it was for the last time. And it probably would be. She doubted Kita’s parents would want the girl who killed their child at her funeral, after all.
Hitori’s eyes barely managed to squeak open, and… huh?
Instead of seeing a slightly damaged truck racing away and Kita’s… body, Hitori just saw a completely destroyed truck, its front completely folded around something. The rest of the truck was badly damaged, the shockwave having bent the entire truck into a wave-like pattern.
Hitori gasped as she heard crunching metal noises coming from within. C-could it be?
A hand grasped the top of the truck, then pulled. And- and a red head of hair came out. N-no. It’s just wishful thinking, Hitori. It’s just another red-haired girl. Nope, no way that’s Kita.
Kita tugged herself over, then grinned at Hitori, her hair messy, her clothes torn, but somehow still completely fine, shooting Hitori a grin.
“Sorry it took me so long, Hitori-chan, traffic was murder~”
Hitori fainted, the adrenaline and hormones pulsating through her body entirely too much for her fragile constitution.
Truck-kun grinned deep inside as he approached the red-haired girl. This is it! I’m taking this one out too! It thought gleefully. There was a pink-haired girl next to her too. A two-for-one special! This is going to be sweet!
Working for the “Murder The Most Normal People You Can Find and Run Them Over Corporation” was a tough job, but it never failed to pay off! Truck-kun had made hundreds of thousands already for his family back in the Rord Motor Plant in Sharonville, Ohio. They’d sent proud pictures of their new equipment. Bigger engines, seat heaters, cup holders- the works!
Truck-kun loved money. It was the one thing that kept it going, through thick and thin. Whenever it started worrying about the moral problems of murdering innocent Japanese NEETs and high school-age children, it just thought about the money it was getting, and completely ignored the moral ramifications of the murder of sentient beings!
“VRMMMM VRMMMMMM VRMMMMM!!!” Truck-kun yelled as it approached. It… couldn’t vocalize very well.
The red-haired girl glanced back at Truck-kun, and… it swore it felt a presence. A power that was typically only manifested after the evisceration of the subject’s body. The red-haired girl began to move quicker and shook her head.
“Didn’t they ever tell you all to stay away? ” the red-haired girl whispered, her lime eyes almost glowing. Almost like… like…
Like Truck-kun’s eyes. Crap, crap, CRAP! Truck-kun thought. But it was too late. The red-haired girl snatched up the pink-haired girl with one arm, then tossed her to the side, surprisingly softly.
The red-haired girl raised an arm. Truck-kun slammed into her… and it all blinked to black.
Truck-kun’s eyes blinked open, and it slowly stood up. Where… where was…
“AHHH!!!” it yelled as it glanced down. Its… its eyes could move! And… and it had legs!
“Where am I?” it mumbled, looking around. It seemed to be in… a cave of sorts? There were lit candles, so it was certainly inhabited. It was sealed with a large wooden door, so it wasn’t getting out for a bit. Not to mention the piles of gold… wait, gold? That meant…
“MONEY!” it shouted, snatching up the pieces of gold. It didn’t know where it was, or why it was in a human body, but… but…
It paused, glancing around. An extremely favorable situation? Mildly archaic technology? A… it glanced down. A well-proportioned, theoretically attractive body?
Oh no… It thought, stopping its gathering of the gold entirely. Could it be… could it be…!
The wooden door opened, and a man in voluminous robes stepped in, a long beard covering his face. Oh no!!!
The man fell to his knees, bowing to the ground. “Our… our lord! He has returned!”
I’ve been isekaied!
“You know, it was the darnedest thing,” the police officer said, scratching his head. “There was no driver in that truck.”
Kita raised her eyebrow, cradling Hitori in her arms. “Wow, is that so?” she asked, though she was hardly surprised. Can’t believe one of those trucks decided to come after me… probably a coincidence though. Attacking me is a death sentence.
Hitori stirred in her arms. Ah, she’s finally awake!
As she opened her eyes her vision came back. Hitori looked up to see Kita? She began to panic.
Kita warmly smiled and spoke slowly, so as not to scare Hitori. “Welcome back, Hitori-chan.”
Hitori shook her head and wrapped her arms around Kita. “I’m so, so sorry! Now we’re both in the afterlife! I should’ve paid more attention to our surroundings…”
Kita responded with a giggle. “Your imagination is too big sometimes. We’re alive!”
Hitori’s head lifted out of Kita’s lap, flushed. “O-Oh!”
The two girls got off the ground and looked at the wreckage. Hitori turned toward Kita with worried eyes. “Th-Thank you for saving me, Kita-chan... I don’t know how you managed to make it out of that, all I could think about was you after you pushed me away…”
Kita stepped toward Hitori. “Playing on the basketball team gave me a lot of reflexes, and the strength I needed to jump out the way!”
“I-I see.” Hitori nodded and quickly blushed. “K-Kita-chan, let’s g-go out more. Let’s spend more time together. With Kessoku Band, too. I didn’t realize how easily it could all go wrong...”
Kita giggled softly. “Oh, don’t worry about that. As long as I’m with you, I’ll be certain nothing goes wrong…” Hitori swore she saw Kita’s eyes flashing with light with that statement, but it quickly disappeared. “And I agree, let’s spend more time together! I love y- I mean, I love spending time with you!” Phew… close one!
Hitori softly smiled at Kita, her eyes glowing with gratitude. “Th-thank you, Kita-chan. Let’s live our lives to the fullest from now on.”
