Work Text:

It was a quiet afternoon in that forest, not a single sound was heard except for the sounds of rushing water from the creek. Well, the only other noise was much quiet, and it was a young boy’s humming.

He sat against a tree, doodling in a notebook. He made sure to clear as much dirt as possible so as to not get his robe dirty.

He was attempting to draw the trees around him. He was incredibly intrigued by the nature around him, as the city he lives in only has technology and rarely even acknowledges plant life.

He felt satisfied as he placed his pencil back into his pocket and sighed.

That was until he felt the notebook being snatched from his hands.

He turned around just to find the thief had begun to run off into the deeper part of the woods.

The boy picked up his pace, and soon caught up with the thief, who had begun to climb a tree as a part of his getaway plan.

The thief easily was caught, just by throwing a fallen tree branch at him. They quickly lost their balance and dropped the notebook, which the boy picked back up.

“You need to work on your agility, Smart Beavis.” The boy said, checking the pages to see if there was any tear.

“Apologies, Smart Butthead, but I started to get bored of walking in the creek alone. Why can’t you join me?”

Smart Butthead shook his head. “I would not like for me or you to get wet. Our mothers would scold us, would they not?”

Smart Beavis grabbed a few fallen leaves and tried to wipe the water from his boots and legs.

“You’ve barely spent any time with me today, you promised that we could look for rocks in the creek for our collection!”

Smart Butthead sighed “Smart Beavis, I have told you countless times I dislike water. I never promised you anything…”

He took a second to think.

“How about this, after I finish this drawing, we can fool around for the rest of the day?”

Smart Beavis seemed to enjoy that idea, nodding his head before sitting against a tree, staring at his friend while fidgeting with a leaf.

Smart Butthead spent a couple minutes finishing details and sighed before signing his drawing. Smart Beavis walked over and took a second to observe what his friend had drawn.

“That looks incredible, Smart Butthead!” He beamed before taking the notebook to take a closer look. Smart Butthead slapped his hands to take it back, causing Smart Beavis to pout.

“Now, will you pay attention to my existence?” He asked, his beryl eyes as big as globes.

Smart Butthead still held on to his book, but got up and began to walk, signaling for Smart Beavis to follow him. Seeing this caused Smart Beavis to perk up and walk after him.

They soon began to chat about a new observatory being opened outside of town, and how they were saving up for tickets. There was apparently a sample of a star on display, which excited them both. If they couldn’t afford to pay for entry, they were already planning a way to sneak in.

Sometimes, they were refused entry to certain restaurants or stores for no reason, even if they did have money to spare. Their mothers told them that’s why they didn’t go to normal school, and just stayed home.

“Being rejects” was the excuse, Smart Beavis never understood what it meant, but Smart Butthead still tried to shield him from being harmed by the word.

Smart Butthead always kept a watchful eye on Smart Beavis for some reason, which Smart Beavis was confused by, as he was always cold to other people. He’s even bitten someone once.

But to Smart Beavis, he was a totally different person, actually talking to him and expressing his true self.

Soon, they both stopped at a fallen tree, which Smart Beavis attempted to jump on, before Smart Butthead lifted him up and let him walk across it. Keeping an eye on him, and making sure he didn’t make any wrong steps.

Soon Smart Beavis leapt off the edge, to Smart Butthead’s horror. Just to end up landing on his feet, still, Smart Butthead rushed to his side as if he broke a bone.

“Smart Beavis! You could have damaged your legs to the point where they would need to be sliced off!”

He took the time to check Smart Beavis for injuries, even though his friend kept saying that he was alright.

Soon, Smart Beavis was being carried, he didn’t really mind how Smart Butthead cared for him, but it could sometimes be very exhausting to deal with.

Soon, he turned his head to the sky, where the sun was starting to set, which gave him an idea.

“Smart Butthead, could we go to our stargazing spot to observe the stars?”

Smart Butthead looked down at him and nodded.

“Of course!”

He picked up his pace before laying his “injured” friend on the soft grass. Lying directly next to him.

Soon enough, the sky turned ebony, with colorful streaks of light and bright stars filling the blank darkness.

A few of the moons were even present, even though Smart Butthead refused to acknowledge any of them.

Suddenly, a flash of white light graced Smart Beavis’ eyes, and he shook his friend’s arm to grab his attention.

“Smart Butthead, observe!” He pointed to a comet flying across the sky.

They both stared in wonder before Smart Butthead spoke up.

“In some cultures, comets are used for wishing, as it was believed that whatever you would wish for would come true. If you were to make any wish, what would it be?”

Smart Beavis pondered over that question before sitting up.

“I’d wish to stay friends with you until the end of time.”

In a rare moment, Smart Butthead smiled.

“I’m pleased to hear that, as I would wish the same thing. You are the only person in existence that I feel comfortable around, after all.”

There was a peaceful silence between them and Smart Beavis lied down on the grass again.

An hour or two had passed before Smart Butthead noticed his friend had fallen asleep, a sign for them to go home.

He let out a yawn before picking up Smart Beavis, holding him like a baby, his head propped against his shoulder as he snored.

Soon, Smart Butthead made his way out of the forest, and back to their house at the edge of town.

He’d been that route before, as they’d tend to stay out in the forest until night, mainly to avoid their mothers. Smart Beavis always ended up asleep by the time they left to go home, so it was just about routine by now.

Soon he saw that run-down shack that he called home. He opened the door, which their mothers never bothered to lock, and walked inside, making sure to shut and lock the door quietly.

He was greeted by his mother asleep on the couch, the tv was playing some old drama which he and Smart Beavis never enjoyed.

He quietly walked past Smart Beavis’ mother’s room, where he heard muffled groans, she was probably “studying biology” with an assistant like she always did.

Soon enough, he made it to their bedroom, which consisted of a single bed, nightstand, small closet, mirror, and a corner full of random objects they’ve collected overtime.

Smart Beavis was tucked into bed, having the covers pulled up to his chin, he looked at peace.

Smart Butthead smiled at him, even though his life sucked, at least he had Smart Beavis. Someone who actually made living bearable, someone who took time to listen, someone worth protecting, someone who he considered his best friend.

He grabbed an old music box from their pile of trinkets and wound it up, putting it on the nightstand. It always soothed Smart Beavis when he was having an episode, and it helped Smart Butthead fall asleep.

Smart Butthead grabbed a spare cape to use as a blanket, and a rolled up robe as a pillow, before lying on the floor and drifting into slumber.

As they both slept, the last thing they both though of was if their wish would ever come true.
