Work Text:
" The word is ending. "
Thanatos tells one of his brothers, sleeping away in his little hammock.
He's been asleep for years, maybe even centuries by now. No one came to rescue him from this almost-inevitable doom, and he hates himself for not doing so either.
He moves to the edge, pushing his feet aside as he sits down on the hammock with his brother. He uses his own legs to slowly rock it back and forth, like a baby in a crib.
" I'm sure you can't hear me, but- " Than has to bite down on his tongue to stop the tears swelling in his eyes. He knows he cannot hear him.
" -I want you to know I've always loved you. "
Had he, really? With all the arguments about him, the shame he felt for being apart of his family, even abandoning him for his own duties of the incarnation of death itself? Sometimes, whenever he was about to talk to him again, he had to hold back his anger from breaching and spitting at Hypnos.
He was always a slacker, never visibly focused on his work, doodling on the papyrus he'd wasted for shades' deaths for eons now. Often times, he'd slip up calling Mother Nyx 'mom' and be publicly shamed for it, how dare he disrespect the real title of their own birth giver?
He was so much more different than all the Chthonic siblings as well, chattier and.. funnier. Everyone else looked as if they were giving the cold shoulder.
" Do you remember when you tried to catch a butterfly and fell into a pit? " Than tries again, putting his fingers to Hypnos' hair. It's silky smooth, not full of knots or curls like he's used to.
" It took us hours to get you out. For some reason you kept digging a hole to chase it, thought it could dig just the same. But it was just a groundhog. "
Silence. He wants a laugh, a chuckle, a snore, anything.
" Mmm.. "
Hypnos. He moaned, just barely twitching his foot. A sign he was alive. Than puts a hand on his thigh and shakes him gently.
" Hypnos? " He whispers, glaring into his face. Nothing else comes up.
He slumps back into his spot. What was left of his brother would die off like the rest of the world, he realizes. Chronos would rule over, they would be needed no longer,
And he'd be alone, just as he always was.
