The Principal

Summary:

Edwin figures out the truth about the Night Nurse's boss. Based on a comment made by Steve Yockey.

Work Text:

There was something familiar about the principal as she stood in front of them admiring their case board. Edwin felt as though he knew the woman even though he was sure he had never met her before. Besides, his mind was too focused on the terror of the fact that the Night Nurse was standing in their office demanding he be sent to hell again to focus on anything else. He knew that if he was sent to hell this time, there would be no miraculous escape nor would Charles be able to save him as Charles would be sent to his own afterlife in Heaven. That fact alone made Edwin want to give up and just let the creature take him if he found himself at its feet again because what would be the point of going on if he would never see Charles again?

He was so caught up in his terror that he almost missed the fact that he wasn't going to be sent back, nor was he going to lose Charles. They were going to remain on Earth together as long as they continued to help ghosts in need. Then one day, in the far future, he might just do enough that he could earn a spot with Charles in Heaven but at least for now he didn't have to worry about going to hell again. He could even stand having the Night Nurse as a supervisor, even if he didn't think they needed one. Still, he was happy to see the Principal leave and the Night Nurse storm out of the office leaving the two of them alone in their sanctuary. He immediately turned to wrap his arms around Charles holding him tightly for a moment as he let the relief wash over him. It was with reluctance that he moved to his desk taking a seat in the chair while Charles sat on the desk beside him.

"You think she will let me call her Charlie?" Charles wondered. "You know after that show Charlie's angels."

"Certainly not," Edwin answered.

"Maybe I could convince her. I do have a convincing smile," Charles told him as Edwin picked up his magnifying glass twirling it.

"Did that woman seem familiar to you?" Edwin asked as he contemplated what just happened.

"Nah, mate. I haven't seen her before," Charles replied as he slid off the desk going over to his bag of tricks. Edwin watched him as he opened it but he continued to twirl his magnifying glass as he thought. Looking down at the desk, he furrowed his brow as he noticed a small soap bear that hadn't been there before. He recognized it immediately as the one that had been in Tragic Mick's shop. He had given it to Niko but how it had gotten here to London was beyond Edwin. He picked it up and looked at it under the magnifying glass as he thought about the woman again. He could hear her words in his mind echoing those that he had heard from Tragic Mick. Suddenly his mind rushed to a single thought and he couldn't help the grin that crossed his face.

"Niko," he whispered as he realized who had been standing in his office. Niko, the lost girl who had tried to save his life from Esther and died saving Crystal. He wasn't sure how she became the Night Nurse's boss but he was happy to find out because she had saved him after all.

"What was that mate?" Charles wondered as he looked up from his bag.

"I was just thinking that perhaps we take a break and watch Scooby doo," Edwin suggested. Charles's brows shot up as he looked at Edwin in surprise.

"Are you feeling alright?" Charles wondered.

"I'm fine," Edwin answered and for the first time in a long time, he wasn't lying. He had his job, the boy he loved, and his friend back without the worry of hell pressing on his shoulders, and for the first time in a long time, he was truly happy.
