Chapter Text
Freddy knew he had one shot to get this right.
Especially now that Gregory was on his ass about marrying Bonnie.
“Freddy?” Gregory asked him suddenly on the way home from soccer practice. Freddy glanced back at him in the rearview.
“What’s up?” Freddy asked, turning his attention back to the road.
“Are you and Daddy married?”
Freddy almost blew through the stop sign.
“I’m sorry, what?” He hit the brakes in time, looking back at Gregory in shock. “What- Why?”
“Well you live with us now, so does that mean you’re married?” Gregory stared at him as if he were stupid. To be fair, Freddy certainly felt it by the way he was gaping at the eight year old.
“Um…no.”
“Why aren’t you?”
“Oh. Uh…” Freddy remembered to start driving again when the car behind them honked. “I haven’t, well…I haven’t asked him.”
“Why?”
“It…it’s complicated, buddy. Adult stuff.”
He knew Gregory was rolling his eyes without even looking at him.
“You guys always say that. Are you gonna ask him?”
Freddy sighed like the thought hadn’t crossed his mind hundreds of times. Like he hadn’t bought a ring for Bonnie months ago and it just sat hidden in his nightstand drawer. He finally shrugged. “Are you okay with that?”
“Um, yeah? Why else do you think I asked, Freddy?” Gregory was giving him a ‘Bon’ look. He could tell from his voice. Freddy huffed a laugh.
“I never know with you. Fine. I’ll ask him.”
“You promise?”
“I– Fuck, yeah, okay-”
“Swear jar!”
“Son of a bitch.”
Now the day was here; Sun was taking Gregory for the night after helping Freddy set up a picnic in the backyard. Bonnie was working late, but Freddy hoped he wouldn’t be too tired to at least come sit and eat with him. It was supposed to be a beautiful night– the aurora borealis would be visible in New York for once to the naked eye, and Bonnie had been so excited about it. Freddy hoped the light pollution wasn’t too bad, and that they’d be able to see them.
All that was left for him to do was wait for his boyfriend to come home.
Freddy sat on the blankets, watching as the sun began to set off in the distance. In hindsight, he should have found a place out by the wineries to take him, but he’d committed now. As the sky began to darken slightly, Freddy heard the familiar sound of Bonnie’s car.
His anxiety spiked as he waited for Bonnie to come out to the backyard to join him. He got his wish about five minutes later, the back door opening.
“Freddy? Greg?” Freddy turned to look at him with a smile, knowing by the look on Bon’s face that he could tell something was up. “Hey.” Bonnie glanced around. “Where’s our kid?” Freddy’s heart fluttered. Ours .
“Sunny took him for the night,” Freddy said, trying to sound nonchalant.
“Why…?” Bonnie asked, raising an eyebrow as he stepped closer.
“Geez, babe, you’re making it sound like you don’t wanna be alone with me,” Freddy joked, though it came out weak. Bonnie immediately softened, walking over to the blanket and kneeling on the edge to kick off his shoes. As soon as they were off, he crawled over to Freddy to steal a kiss.
“I never said that,” Bonnie climbed right onto his lap and wrapped his arms around his shoulders. “I was just surprised, that’s all. I didn’t know we were having a date night. I would have dressed cuter.” Freddy rolled his eyes. Bonnie looked beautiful in anything, and his dorky sweater and jeans were no exception. He wrapped both arms around Bonnie’s waist, holding him close.
“You look perfect.”
“You always say that,” Bonnie teased, leaning in so they were nose to nose.
“I always mean it,” Freddy murmured. Bonnie giggled softly, pressing his lips firmly against Freddy’s. Freddy hummed in delight, kissing him back just as sweetly. Freddy almost forgot he was supposed to be getting ready to propose. Bonnie’s mouth was intoxicating, and tonight was no exception as Bonnie’s hands slid down to hold his face. Bonnie’s lips parted easily for his tongue, whimpering when Freddy slid it alongside his own.
They didn’t often get to just make out like this, and Freddy wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity. Purple curls easily threaded through his fingers as he guided Bonnie’s head to where he wanted. He deepened the kisses, not halting in brushing his lips against Bonnie’s over and over until they were both forced to pull away for air.
“I did get dinner,” Freddy breathed, captivated by Bonnie’s eyes. Bonnie’s mouth quirked up in the corner.
“What if I want to skip right to dessert?” Bonnie teased. Freddy chuckled, sorely tempted, but he’d gotten Bonnie’s favorite.
“I got your favorite though,” Freddy said, even as his hands slid into the back of Bonnie’s jeans. Bonnie pursed his lips as if he were thinking, though Freddy knew he’d be tempted by the promise of the actual dessert. “Lava cake, too.”
“Is that what I smell?” Bonnie peeked around him at the take out containers. “I was going to say we could just eat later, but now I’m tempted.”
“How about we share that, then?” Freddy asked with a laugh. He wasn’t even mad. “Only if you ate a meal at work though.”
“I had a salad and lemonade,” Bonnie answered immediately. “Raven can vouch. She brought it.” Freddy snorted.
“Alright, fine. Let me take this other stuff inside and put it in the fridge at least.” Bonnie pouted as he slid off Freddy’s lap, but he got up to help him carry everything inside but the container with the lava cake.
Later, after they’d fed each other the lava cake, they lay side by side on the blanket, fingers laced and watching the stars begin to come into view across the sky. Bonnie snuggled up to him, his head against Freddy’s shoulder as he eagerly looked up.
“Do you think we’ll be able to see them from here?”
“I hope so. If not, I’ll take you out to the fields tomorrow. Maybe we’ll see them there,” Freddy assured him.
“Okay!” Bonnie looked so genuinely ecstatic that Freddy’s heart melted. He leaned over to kiss the top of his boyfriend’s head before turning his attention back to the sky. It was rare that they could see the northern lights with the naked eye even as far north as they were, but it was a clear night and there had been a huge solar storm earlier in the day. The fireflies began to flit about, which seemed to make Bonnie happy just enough of its own. Maybe now I could…
“Hey, baby…” Freddy began.
Then there was a flash of green. He heard Bonnie’s gasp of delight, his boyfriend shooting into a sitting position. Freddy watched Bonnie watch the sky, pure awe written all over his face as he stared up at it. Freddy drank in the sight of him, pulling the ring box out of his pocket and just holding it in his palm.
How will I know when it’s the right moment?
Bonnie looked over at him, his eyes full of excitement. “Look!” He reached over, thankfully grabbing the hand that wasn’t holding the ring box. He didn’t even seem to notice it. Freddy obeyed, looking up to watch the natural lightshow with him. There was the occasional streak of yellow, but they could see mostly greens.
“Moon is probably having a field day with his camera right now,” Bonnie said, “I’m going to have to beg to see those proofs.”
“You know he’ll hand them over.”
“He’d better,” Bonnie grumbled, turning his eyes back up to the sky. “It’s so beautiful though…I just wish I could see all the colors.” Freddy smiled, shifting closer.
“It is,” he agreed. They leaned their heads together, watching the green auroras dance across the sky. Eventually though, Freddy pulled back, trying to work up the courage to ask the question he’d wanted to ask the man beside him for years. Even when they were apart, he’d dreamed of winning Bonnie back, of seeing a wedding band on his finger and waking up beside him for the rest of their lives. He was so close to achieving that dream. All he had to do was–
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Bonnie asked, nudging him gently. How he hadn’t noticed the ring box, Freddy had no idea.
“I..um…” Freddy stammered, “You…” Just do it. “You’re just beautiful.” Fuck.
“Is that all?” Bonnie laughed, “You look terrified, love.”
Freddy blushed.
“I just wanted to um…” This should not be so difficult.
But what if he says no?
What will I do if he says no?
“Freddy?” Now his boyfriend just looked concerned , which was somehow worse. “Are you okay?” Fuck.
There’s so many things I want to say, but it has to be perfect, and there aren’t words, not really, but–
He’s staring at me, I have to do something!
Freddy pushed the ring box into his hand with trembling fingers. Bonnie looked down at it, then looked up at him. His brows furrowed as he opened it, then his mouth fell open as soon as he saw the ring inside. It was a simple silver band with rivets on either side of the thin stripe of diamonds. It had taken Freddy weeks to find one that he thought Bonnie might like. His heart pounded in his chest as Bonnie finally looked up at him.
“Is this…?” Bonnie’s voice shook. Freddy reached over for his hand.
“There will never be enough words to tell you how much you mean to me,” Freddy said quietly. “That’s why I’m having so much trouble getting them out.” Bonnie let out a laugh, his eyes glistening as they looked at each other.
“Then just ask me,” Bonnie’s voice was just as soft.
“Bon…” He could already see the wide grin lighting up Bonnie’s entire face, and all he wanted to do was kiss him. “Will you marry- oof !” He was on his back, Bonnie above him after tackling him to the ground. Bonnie’s mouth crashed against his, the ring box sitting on Freddy’s chest as he leaned down to do it.
“Yes,” Bonnie whispered against his lips. “I’ve dreamed about stealing your last name since I was twenty years old. Of course I’ll marry you.” Freddy pulled him back in for another kiss, reaching up to cradle Bonnie’s face in his hands. His boyfriend- no , his fiance - was crying, but he knew these were happy tears. When they broke apart, Bonnie picked the box up, shifting down so he was stradling Freddy’s thighs. Freddy took his cue to sit up, reaching to take the ring and slide it onto Bonnie’s finger. Bonnie looked down at it, sniffling softly.
“It’s so pretty,” Bonnie murmured, looking up at him. Then he playfully swatted Freddy’s chest. “I knew you were up to something!”
Freddy laughed, wrapping both arms around Bonnie and holding him firmly against him. “I love you.” His own eyes were burning, but he managed to hold his tears back as relief set in.
“I love you so much,” Bonnie’s voice cracked, wiping clumsily at his face before he wrapped himself around Freddy in return. “You–You’re such a sap. Did you buy it today?”
“No, I’ve had it for months,” Freddy said sheepishly. Bonnie pulled back to stare at him with wide eyes. “I was nervous!” Bonnie’s eyes softened, and he leaned forward to kiss the corner of his mouth.
“You’re silly,” Bonnie murmured, “It’s you and me, remember?” The words were spoken so easily between them now, but always in tender, emotional moments like these. Freddy’s resolve not to cry almost slipped, but he held it back as he leaned their foreheads together.
“Damn right.”
