Summary
The moment a tendril began to release him, he thrashed his arm out and caught one of them with his hand. The tearing of his nail stung, he probably did more damage to himself than to the segyein, but it made them hold him down tightly again. He couldn’t live with himself if he didn’t fight at every opportunity.
The one time he hadn’t fought had cost him dearly. Giving into the segyein for even a second had been enough to lose everything he hadn’t known he had. It was when he’d lost his spirit and resigned himself to death that Ivan had died in his place. If he had kept singing, if he had lost legitimately, would Ivan have still sacrificed himself like that? If Ivan had lived, would he have beat Luka? Would he have been made to do these things? Probably not. His image was much more like Luka’s. Perhaps he would have been given the pedestal he deserved.
