Second times the charm

Summary:

You and Lucifer have been seeing each other for awhile, a long while, and Lucifer starts to think that maybe he’d like to be with you in a different way…

Work Text:

You and Lucifer had been together for quite a few years, and things had been perfect. Well, maybe not perfect since both of you had your own issues to work through, but you both had developed a system of care and support for each other through the worst of your issues. Nights of insomnia were spent in each other’s company, talking until the waning hours of the morning finally came. Bouts of depression were spent with one another, not letting the other sink too far into despair and trying to cheer each other up. When Lucifer had his anxiety attacks, you were never too far away and you had become very good at helping him calm down and reassure his doubts. When your own insecurities came to the surface, Lucifer was always there with a reassuring word and showered you with praise, making sure you truly believed what he said. You were both healing, slowly but surely, and in each other you had found not only someone to help shoulder your emotional and mental burdens, but someone to truly and deeply love.

While you had grown content and happy to be by his side as you were, Lucifer had been toying with the idea of taking things a bit further. Unlike usual, you had no idea that his thoughts had started turning towards something much more permanent, something more binding. The thoughts had started one night so far back, while you were both sharing a soft moment in bed, and the idea had completely shocked him. But, as time went on, and your love bloomed ever more, Lucifer started to welcome the thoughts, started sketching the thoughts of you that filled his mind. He never thought he would be on this path again, not after everything he had been through, but maybe because he could actually picture you as that now, maybe that was a sign he was mentally and emotionally ready for a commitment like this…

Although, really, there was one person he wanted to talk to before he even brought it up with you.

Lucifer took a deep breath before he knocked on the door to Charlie’s room, lightly fiddling with his cane as he announced himself. “Hey, Char-char? Can I come in?”

Normally he rushed right in when he was excited for something. But he, ahem, learned his lesson when he ran in on Charlie and Vaggie… During them… Uhm, having fun. Yeah… That was a really awkward moment.

“Come in dad.” She called out, and that was all he needed before he headed inside, making sure it was shut behind him before he wandered in.

Charlie and Vaggie looked to be relaxing for once, lounging on the bed as they watched something on the TV in the room, which he was happy about. Charlie worked really hard and deserved some downtime when she could manage it.

“I’m, uh, not interrupting anything, am I?”

“No, not this time.” Vaggie piped up, which made both Charlie and Lucifer turn a bit red.

Charlie laughed a bit, mainly to break the awkwardness. “What did you need, dad?”

“Well, I… Uh, golly this is hard.” He tapped his fingers a bit.

“Is something wrong?” Charlie looked concerned, which made him immediately shake his head frantically.

“NO! Nothing’s wrong. Not at all… Actually, I was hoping to ask your opinion on something.” He took a deep breath. “What are your thoughts on me getting married again?”

Charlie went ramrod straight, looking at him with wide eyes before she practically squealed and leapt from the bed, tackling him into a hug.

“Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh! Have you asked her yet!? Have you planned anything?! Does she know you’re going to ask?!”

Lucifer laughed, hugging her back tight as he tried to calm her down. Although her enthusiasm did set his worried mind at ease.

“No, she doesn’t know I’m going to ask. And I haven’t planned anything. Yet. I wanted to see how you’d feel about it.” He lightly scratched the back of his neck. Before, with Lilith, he didn’t really concern himself with what other people thought of his choice, and he still didn’t to an extent, but Charlie had a say in this, in his mind. He knew she approved of you, but getting married was waaaay different from just dating. If she had a problem with it, then, well, he couldn’t go through with this with a clear conscience, as much as he loved you.

Charlie smiled, still excited but much more subdued than before. “Dad, I’m happy for you. Really.”

“In case her tackle hug wasn’t a big enough hint.” Vaggie chuckled, coming to stand beside her.

Charlie nodded eagerly. “I’m so happy for both of you! Really, you both belong together.”

Lucifer looked relieved, and very happy. “Thank you Charlie.” He sighed happily. “Now I can ask Y/N with a clear conscience.” He gave her a squeeze.

Charlie grinned. “Do you know what you’re going to do? What are you going to say?”

“Not a clue.” Lucifer laughed. “But I’ll think of something.”

You were very different from Lilith, in so many ways, and Lucifer couldn’t help but draw on those thoughts as he debated on how to go about proposing to you. When he married Lilith, it was a very quick thing, spontaneous one might say. She had certainly been a love at first sight, but he didn’t really get a chance to know her very well until after they were married. He jumped into it, and though they made it work for so many centuries, it ended up fizzling out after awhile. With you though, he had really gotten to know you these past several years, and he fell deeply and completely in love with you. After getting to know you, realizing how good you were for him and how perfectly you seemed to click, Lucifer was confident that this was a marriage that might last even longer…

But, you were very different from what he was used to in terms of preferences, and it left him a lot to consider. So much that it made his head spin. But after a while, of running endless ideas for rings and proposals and settings, Lucifer decided on being spontaneous with it.

When the moment arrived, he’d seize it.

Both of you were relaxing in your shared room one night, after a rather relaxing dinner out at one of the fancier restaurants in Hell. It was your three-year anniversary after all, and Lucifer jumped at any chance to pamper you since you were mostly against it. The night was calm, the food was good, and you both retired back to your room for some snuggles and some downtime. Lucifer wasn’t really sure where the feeling came from, but it felt right. The idea of broaching the topic of marriage wasn’t anxiety-inducing as it normally was to him, and you seemed at ease.

Maybe tonight was the night. Actually, yes, it was the night. When was more romantic than during an anniversary celebration?

“Y/N?” He hummed, gently letting his hand curl around your waist, pulling back just a bit from where you were both sitting at the edge of the bed.

“Yes?” You tilted your head a bit, turning from admiring the clear night sky to focus on him. “What is it?”

He cleared his throat. “I… I wanted to ask you something. Well, your opinion really.” He took a breath. “What are your thoughts on, uh, getting married?”

You blinked, looking genuinely shocked for the moment before you composed yourself. “I… I never really thought much about it before now, but I'd love to… Are you sure though? Marriage, I know it’s a big thing for you, something serious. Are you sure you want that with me?”

Lucifer nodded, his gaze gentle and serious. “I am… Look, I’ve made a lot of bad decisions in my life, most of them have blown up in my face at some point. But you. You’re one of the best things that’s happened to me. I’d like to spend the rest of my life with you, if you want to spend it with me.…” He slowly shifted from your grip, and your eyes went wide as he lowered himself down on one knee. He waved his hand and a small box materialized in his hands, which he opened to reveal a rather lovely silver ring with a deep blue gemstone on it. Silver was your favorite metal for jewelry, and you liked darker blue colors.

“Will you marry me? Please.” He swallowed, and he seemed as nervous as he was genuine.

You felt dumbstruck. You thought he was just asking your opinion, not setting up for an actual proposal… But even as surprised as you were, you already knew your answer.

Your eyes were a bit watery as you smiled, nodding. “Nothing would make me happier.”

Lucifer practically sagged with relief, but was quick to hop up and pull you into a hug, squeezing you tightly while muttering something under his breath (likely some form of thanks). You squeezed him back for a moment before he pulled back, his smile wide enough to rival Alastor’s.

“Thank you.” He breathed with relief.

You giggled. “Did you think I’d say no?”

“Well, maybe… Yeah.” He admitted.

You kissed his cheek, smiling as you shook your head. “To you? Never.” You laughed, and squeezed his hands. “We have a bit of planning ahead of us now, I guess… When do you want to get married?”

Lucifer bit the inside of his cheek, looking thoughtful. He knew you weren’t a fan of grand gestures or big events, and frankly even if he wanted to pamper you, it wouldn’t make you happy. This was just as much about you as him… His eyes brightened as he refocused back on you.

“Well, I’d like to marry you right here and now, if that’s okay with you.”

You laughed a bit. “You can do that?”

“I very much can.” He gloated, puffing up a bit proudly as he gently tugged you to your feet. “I did it once, I don’t mind doing it again… But only if that’s what you want to do.” His expression was soft. “Anything you want, it’s yours. I’ll give you anything. Big ceremony, fancy dress, anything. As long as you’re happy.”

You lightly rested your head against his. “I just want you, Lucifer. Here, now, just the both of us. I’m happy as long as I get to be yours.”

Lucifer beamed. “You already are.” He straightened up, and there was a wash of hellish warmth as Lucifer shifted to his full demon form. His horns pressed up from his forehead, cradling a ball of hellfire between the tips. His eyes shifted to bloody red, though they seemed more gentle than when he usually had them like that. His wings spread out, all six of them, before they all folded in around the both of you, wrapping you both up in a cocoon of blood red and pearly white feathers, your own little private bubble.

He gently took your hands in his, mindful of his sharper claws as he tenderly squeezed them, before holding the ring he had picked towards you.
“I promise, on my heart, to love you, cherish you, care for you, and please you-” You both shared a look and a slight chuckle at the double-meaning “-for the rest of my immortal life.” He murmured, gently sliding the ring on your finger as he spoke.

You took soft breath. “And I promise, on my heart, to love you, cherish you, take care of you, and please you-” you giggled a bit, making him grin “-for the rest of my life and after.”

“I love you.” He gently caressed your cheek, and you felt the slightest tingle of the newly placed metal band on his finger as you leaned into it.

“I love you too.” You murmured, leaning in as Lucifer tilted your head, pressing his lips against yours as he shifted to wrap his arm around your waist, deepening the moment. You lost track of time, how long you both stayed like that, lost in each other, but you eventually had to break away for some air. Lucifer didn’t let you go far, keeping your foreheads pressed together, but you didn’t mind. Both of you were still wrapped up in the heady feeling of what you both just did.

Lucifer had a very loving and happy look on his face, lightly thumbing your cheek.

“So, how does it feel?” He slight grin curled his lips. “Being Mrs. Morningstar.”

You giggled breathlessly. “It feels good. Though it may take some getting used to.”

He nodded. “I know. But don’t worry, we have all the time in the world.” He lightly ran his thumb over the back of your hand, admiring the wedding ring that now adorned your hand. A wedding ring also sat on his finger, a familiar weight, though this time the band was silver to match your own instead of gold.

His expression turned mischievous, and before you could react he had gripped you by the hips and tossed you up on the bed, making you squeal as you landed with a bounce near the head of the bed. Lucifer was quick to pounce on you, grinning as he pinned you to the bed firmly yet gently.

“Now, if it’s all the same to you, there’s a very important wedding tradition I’d like to uphold as soon as possible.” He lightly gripped your chin.

“Oh you’re not the only one.” You murmured, humming as you leaned in as Lucifer pressed his lips against yours.

You and Lucifer lounged in bed, your head draped against his chest as you both relaxed from your very eager bedroom activities. Lucifer’s arms curled around your waist, a smile on his face as he rested his cheek against the top of your head, wings wrapped securely around both of you. He was gently rubbing your hips, massaging feeling back into them, although it really just made you feel more boneless than you were already.

“Mmm… How long were you planning this?” You hummed, craning your head up.

Lucifer chuckled, a slight awkward tinge in his tone. “Well, I didn’t plan it. I’ve been thinking about it for a really long time, but I just worked up the nerve to ask you… I just, well, said what came naturally.” He lightened his hold on you just enough to allow you to turn in his wings, propping your head up on your arms as you settled back against his chest again.

“Well, just in case it wasn’t obvious.” You smiled. “You completely blew me away.”

“Are we talking about before with the proposal, or just now?” He quirked a brow, laughing as you playfully smacked his shoulder with a giggle of your own.

“You know what I mean. But I’ll say both, if anything just so that you can enjoy the ego boost.”

Lucifer just laughed, before he tightened his hold on you, letting out a happy hum as he resumed cuddling you, which you were just as eager to continue given how you relaxed once again. You shifted so your arms were draped around his neck, and your head pressed against his chest to listen to the heart that he had sworn on not so long ago.
