Work Text:

There’s not much going on around him right now, at least he doesn’t think that there is, after all there’s nothing. Nothing around him except the silent slosh of what he can only assume to be water, although it’s gotten thicker with passing.

He’s starting to think that it’s not water.

There’s no such thing as temperature where he is, he wants to say that he’s cold but there’s nothing there, he can feel the tingle of something cold yet his nerves don’t seem to pick up on the degree itself. They seem to be in a state of suspended motion, or whatever nerves are. He wants to say he’s hot because the water is thick, too thick it feels like it’s suffocating him, drowning him in the blackness and having it fill his lungs.

He thinks he wants to die.

Megumi knows he wants to die.

There’s not really much left for him anymore is there? He wasn’t strong enough, he’s not strong enough.

There’s nothing that he can do to change that, at least that he can think of. He can’t really do much of anything right now, his body isn’t his. His mind isn’t his.

His soul isn’t his.

He wants to die, nothing more than to feel nothing anymore, although he’s already feeling nothing. So maybe he hopes that death will bring him something in the end. Maybe he’s hoping that by dying he’ll at least feel his own life getting stripped away, and he won’t be left in this limbo state, wondering if he ever even existed in the first place, or maybe he was dead and maybe he was dying. Maybe this is it.

This is all that there is for him after death, just the slosh of water that he can’t really hear, yet it feels like it's there, digging through his brain. Like a word that he can’t say, a word that’s on the tip of his tongue but is slipping with each passing second. Infecting his entire mind, making it numb and null.

He wants to die.

Why won’t he die?

Oh, that’s right.

Yuuji.

He won’t let him.

He wants to laugh at that, Yuuji hasn’t known him that long but he should know by now how weak Megumi is, everyone else does at this point. Besides, Yuuji was the one who saw him last, laying on the ground and sobbing because he couldn’t do anything anymore.

Because he gave up.

Yuuji should focus on killing Sukuna, not saving Megumi but he can feel it every now and then. Something hitting him and slowly pushing him out of the water, little by little. Making his thoughts into their own and letting them twirl around each other, trying to figure something out as they mend themselves piece by piece. He can feel it, but he doesn’t think that he should be allowed to.

Yuuji should kill Sukuna not save him.

Yuuji should kill him.

But he won’t, that’s something Megumi knows deep down, he doesn’t know why he knows it though. He knows that Yuuji won’t kill him, like something that’s dug into the back of his mind taunting him. He knows the reason why Yuuji won’t kill him.

It’s the same reason when they first met Megumi couldn’t fathom the thought of him dying, a concept that he isn’t familiar with. Something full, something warm and soft, something that surrounds him to his very core and makes him do stupid things for stupid people.

He wants to laugh because the more he thinks about it, the more he realizes that he craves it. He craves it more than death and he craves it because it’s the opposite of this state.

Love.

He can’t find it within himself to try for it though, he wants it but he can’t have it. He doubts his survival of this whole situation is plausible, it doesn’t make sense. Yuuji is new to this and the entirety of this, there’s no way that Yuuji could beat Sukuna.

Yet Megumi still wants him to.

The more and more he feels something the more he wants to be saved, he doesn’t want to die. He doesn’t know what happens but suddenly he can think again, and he thinks about Tsumiki, walking to and from school with her and watching the sun on the laundry. He remembers first meeting Gojo and how the man seemed weird and distant when they first met, showing up a few times sporadically before practically staying full time at the house.

He didn’t notice it back then but Gojo seemed lonely, he seemed as if he was waiting for something. Something that neither of them knew really what it was, an unspoken silence between the two of them as Megumi would catch him scrolling on his phone and sighing as he looked at a few pictures. Only once did he see what he was looking at.

A man with long dark hair was laughing, he was sitting on the bench and he had some sort of sweet in his hand as Gojo was taking a selfie of the two of them, they seemed happy. Gojo seemed happy.

He finds himself on the same path before, walking home from school when suddenly he turns around and sees someone, they have pink hair and scars riddle their face. He feels like he knows him but the name barely fits on his tongue as they begin speaking.

“I know I can’t tell you to live but… It’ll be so lonely without you Fushiguro,” the boy says and suddenly Megumi knows who it is. The name fits on his tongue yet he doesn’t speak it. Instead he finds the water around him begin to morph as it seems to split.

He can’t remember the exact details of what happens next but he remembers the feeling of his eyes watering as he smiles. The shadows seemed like they were talking to him again, finally. Grabbing and twisting around him as if recognizing who he was as he finally does something, something and feels slight twisted joy as he feels his shadows open, grabbing Sukuna and holding him down for once.

He laughs at it in his head, finally .

It doesn’t take him long after that when he feels something pierce through his soul, or rather Sukuna’s.

It’s them splitting, finally .

He knows who it is, he couldn’t mistake the cursed energy if he tried, the way it so boldly presents itself with joy and glee. Nobara .

He doesn’t know what happens next but he can hear Yuuji laughing as he grabs Megumi’s body and holds him, picking him up. He can hear the words the Yuuji whispers to him, almost like a prayer.

“We did it Megumi, we did it,”

Megumi manages to open his eyes and he sees the sun shining its bright rays down upon Yuuji and for a second he feels his heart sore before smiling back at him.

“Yeah we did,”

He feels Yuuji press his face to his as he giggles, he can feel Yuuji’s smile on his cheek.

“I love you Megumi,” The words come out choked and sorrowful as if he almost didn’t mean to say them as the wind seems to carry it away.

But he repeats it back.

“I love you Yuuji,”
