"Moms Making A Difference" is a captivating drama reality TV series that follows a group of diverse mothers as they attempt to navigate personal struggles and societal challenges while striving to make a difference in their communities. The show first aired on TV30 in November of 2015, but didn't become widely popular until its fourth season in 2019, where thousands of viewers eagerly anticipated the episodes that starred Cathy Hernandez and Karen Anderson, two mothers who live in the same neighborhood and who constantly attempt to one-up each other every chance they got. Their rivalry instantly captured the interest of the public, so much so that TV30 decided to offer them their own show titled "Mom vs. Mom" after their season on MMAD ended.
However, some people speculate that the two mothers only do it for show to get rich and famous. And while half of the internet agree, the other half are saying otherwise – not because they think these women have genuine hatred for one another, but because they believe Cathy and Karen are secretly in love with each other and are just too in denial to realize it.
Fast forward to 2024, where neither of the two mothers had expected to get a call from a certain talent agency at nine o'clock in the morning on a fucking Monday. They'd been told the exact same thing by the person on the other end of the line, and it was to simply come into Madame Tankthrust’s office the following day at noon. Together.
So that's how Cathy and Karen both found themselves being led through the official Double Diva Divisions building by a sassy homosexual with a clipboard and sunglasses.
“Honestly, I can't believe Kathleen and Darlene were pulled out of Moms Making A Difference. They were my favorite astrological lesbians! People say it's because of the weed they found in their son's room, but I think it's because the network's homophobic.”
Cathy awkwardly cleared her throat. “So uh, how long is this meeting going to be again? My kids are waiting for me in the parking lot.”
Karen tutted. “Typical Cathy. You at least left the AC on, right?”
“No, Karen.” Cathy rolled her eyes. “I made sure to lock them all out. Those little shit stains aren't about to drive off in my car with the baby. Lord knows what trouble they're getting up to in the parking lot, though.”
“Well, they're your kids, after all.”
“Bitch, what's that supposed to mean?!”
“Ah, sorry to interrupt your toxic lesbianism, but we're here,” Dorian announced, ushering the two women into Bryce's office.
“All of your queries will be answered by my boss, so just sit tight and she'll be with you shortly,” he said before promptly leaving the room.
Cathy whistled as her eyes traveled around the fairly large office, taking notice of the various plaques and picture frames hung up on the left side of the wall that displayed all of the CEO’s successes and people she's helped rise to stardom through the years.
“Can't believe we're actually here.”
Karen rolled her eyes and crossed her arms to her chest.
“This meeting better be good or I'd have canceled my spa day for nothing.”
“Seriously, Karen? Are you really that incapable of caring about anyone other than yourself?”
The short-haired brunette huffed and stalked over to Cathy. “What do you know about caring for others, Catherine?”
Before Cathy could bark out a reply, the sound of the door opening caught their attention as a red-heeled CEO strutted in and greeted them with her signature grin.
“So happy you could make it, ladies. Please, take a seat.”
The two mothers shared resentful looks at one another before seating themselves down in the two separate chairs provided for them. Bryce walked over to her own chair behind her desk and clasped her hands together once she was seated.
“Right, I'm sure you two have a lot of questions, so allow me to–”
“You want to profit off of Cathy and I's rivalry because people like watching us go at each other's throats whilst also giving them the impression that we want to fuck each other?” Karen interrupted and stared unamused at the surprised CEO. “Yeah, you're not exactly the first person to approach us with that idea.”
Bryce chuckled and leaned back into her chair. “Oh, but I'm not interested in exploiting you, ladies.”
Cathy snapped her head up to look at the wealthy CEO.
“Wait, you're not?”
“I may be rich and powerful, my dear, but I still have a heart. I literally risked my life to free my husband from his old management, and now I want to do the same for you two.”
The two mothers glanced at each other, as if to make sure they both had heard the woman correctly. If the CEO was telling the truth, then they'd finally break free from their contract with their current management, and therefore wouldn't have to be forced to keep working together.
“What's in it for us, huh? How do we know you won't try shoving us into another lousy reality series together?” Karen queried.
“I'm glad you asked.” Bryce grinned and pulled out two separate documents from a folder, placing them both flat on her desk and sliding them towards Cathy and Karen. “I have here two contracts for you ladies,” She began, gesturing to the papers in front of them. “If you choose to sign the one on the left, you agree to fully step out of the limelight. Meaning: you no longer will be obligated to take part in any type of project offered to you, so long as you remain under my management. That said, since you won't be making any money, you will also be provided a mansion, a car, and 5 million dollars each year, courtesy of Double Diva Divisions.”
Both mothers choked on air.
“You're bluffing.”
Bryce turned to Karen, narrowing her eyes at the woman. “Ms. Anderson, I'll have you know that I take very good care of my clients.” The CEO gestured to her little wall of fame. “And I'm not stupid. You two are very in-demand right now. Other agencies would kill to have you both under their name just to exploit you until you're no longer relevant, and when that happens? They drop you and leave you with nothing. Is that something you want?”
Karen gulped and shook her head.
“What's the other contract then?” Cathy curiously asked.
“Ah, well this one is specifically for you, Catherine.”
Cathy's eyes widened in surprise.
“What?”
Bryce casually leaned forward, resting her elbows on her desk as she clasped her hands together.
“Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but between you two maternal divas, hot pink topic over here is clearly the fan favorite.”
“Hah!”
“Oh, fuck off.”
Karen rolled her eyes, while Cathy childishly stuck her tongue out at her in triumph.
The CEO proceeded. “Signing this contract means you agree to remain as a public figure and continue to get projects offered to you, and only you,” Bryce emphasized. “Ms. Anderson doesn't have to be involved in anything you do from here on out. Now, isn't that what you ladies always wanted?”
Despite the fact that both mothers had voiced their detest for one another and have even said that they'd rather work alone than work together, the tense silence between them said otherwise.
“You’re saying I can have my own tv show?” Cathy asked in a small voice.
Bryce nodded, smiling at her. “Even better, Catherine. I can make you a star.”
Karen huffed, tired of hearing all this stupid talk and stood up from her seat, snatching up a pen from Bryce's desk. “Good fucking luck then, babe,” she said and signed the first contract before storming out the room.
Cathy felt an ache in her heart as she watched her fellow mother leave the CEO’s office, enraged.
“Well, what's it going to be, Ms. Hernandez?” Bryce called for her attention again.
Cathy turned back around and looked between the two contracts placed in front of her. The best option was to obviously sign the one on the right. This was her chance to finally rise to stardom all on her own!
No more stupid disputes between her and Karen for the sake of ‘good television’.
No more dumb interviews where they have to deny their nonexistent relationship but have to pretend like there's something there so people keep talking about them.
Just…
No more Karen overall.
It's exactly what Cathy had always wanted since the very start.
So why did it seem so wrong?
“Ms. Hernandez, I can guarantee that you will never have to see Ms. Anderson ever again once you sign this contract,” Bryce assured, her red nails lightly thrumming on her desk.
Cathy swallowed hard as she picked up the pen and hovered her hand above the contract on the right, the pen’s ballpoint inches away from touching the paper. Bryce could clearly tell the mother was hesitant and unsure, and it actually made her smile.
“You know, sometimes it's never about the journey, but more about the people you take them with that makes it all worthwhile.”
Cathy lifted her head up to look at Bryce, her brows furrowed in confusion.
“What do you mean?”
The CEO chuckled. “Catherine, don't tell me you agreed to do 12 whole seasons of a ridiculous reality series just because you couldn't back out of production. I mean, don't take this the wrong way, dear but if you or Karen had decided to leave your management earlier, they would've simply scouted for their next cash grab talent and forget you ladies ever existed,” Bryce explained it to her bluntly, which made Cathy frown because she knew it was true.
“Your relationship with Karen might have started out as a petty rivalry, but you can't deny that you two have grown so much closer over the course of your careers that it's almost impossible to imagine doing anything without the other. And be honest, if you had been asked to do your show with anyone else, would you have still agreed to do it?”
Cathy stayed silent, but she didn't need to say anything for Bryce to know what her answer was.
“You're a talented woman, Cathy. I have no doubt about it. But is being the center of attention really what you want? Or do you actually just want one particular person's attention?” Bryce stared at Cathy carefully.
The mother felt her heart begin to race in her chest as she thought about what she wanted.
Or more like who she wanted.
It was true that she and Karen hated each other.
But when the cameras weren't rolling and it was just the two of them… They actually got along pretty well. They might've even stolen quick glances at each other when they thought no one was looking. The ‘secretly dating’ rumors had to have sprouted from somewhere, after all.
“Of course, it's still solely up to you, Cathy. I won't force you to choose one or the other if it's not what your heart truly desires,” Bryce shot the mother a small smile.
Cathy nodded slowly as she took in a deep breath and finally signed the contract of her choice.
Bryce smiled approvingly.
“Wonderful! Now, there may be a teensy tiny detail I may have forgotten to mention earlier about this contract.”
Cathy blinked.
“What?”
—
When Cathy left Bryce's office a few minutes later, she found Karen standing in the hallway with her arms crossed.
At hearing the familiar footsteps of her fellow mother, Karen turned her head to look in Cathy's direction and let out an agitated huff.
“If you're here to gloat, fucking save it, Cathy.”
“What is there to gloat about?” Cathy asked as she walked over to Karen.
The brunette rolled her eyes. “I get it, okay?! You don't have to rub it in!”
Cathy sighed. “Karen, would you just listen–”
“Fucking make me!”
Well, if that's what she wanted.
Cathy gripped Karen by the front of her shirt and forcefully slammed her up against the wall. The action caught the brunette off-guard.
“What the fuck, Cathy?!”
“Ugh, would you just shut up for a second and let me speak?!”
When Karen simply huffed in response, Cathy finally was able to tell her what she'd done.
“I signed the other contract,” she bravely stated, watching Karen's eyes widen in disbelief. “I realized maybe fame wasn't for me, and that I'd much prefer being out of the spotlight than to be in it without you.”
The brunette's jaw dropped at the last sentence.
“Cathy…”
“I know, I know! It's stupid! I just never realized how much I actually cared about you until now, alright?”
“Cathy–” Karen went to speak but was immediately interrupted by Cathy.
“And frankly you don't have to like me back or anything. It's totally fine! No pressure at all!”
Karen rolled her eyes as the pink one kept on ranting.
“I just hope that this doesn't change anything between us, especially now that we– oomph! ”
It was Karen's turn to make Cathy shut up.
And she did it by slamming her lips against hers in a desperate but chaste kiss.
When they pulled away, Cathy's cheeks were almost the same color as her jacket.
“You talk too much, you know?” Karen said with a smirk, her lips having a light pink smear mark thanks to Cathy's lipstick.
“Speak for yourself,” Cathy muttered under her breath, her heart beating so loudly in her chest because holy shit… THEY KISSED!
“Karen, why…?”
The brunette shrugged casually.
“Because you're the most annoying woman I've ever met. But you're also kind, and sweet, and undeniably beautiful.”
Cathy flushed even redder.
“Whoa, careful there, Karebear. It almost sounds like you like me.”
“I do.” Karen didn't even hesitate.
The two stared at each other for a moment before pulling one another in for another kiss. This time it lasted much longer and was more passionate. And by the time they pulled away again, they now had the biggest goofy smiles plastered on their faces.
“Guess it won't be so bad now that we'll soon be moving in together, huh?”
Karen raised a brow.
“Wait, what?”
“The contract, Karen. We're apparently supposed to share the mansion and the car,” Cathy informed her fellow mother. “But don't worry, Madame Tankthrust was gracious enough to double the annual 5 million dollars, since we'll both be stepping out of the spotlight.”
Karen nodded slowly.
“So you're saying I'm stuck with you for the rest of my life?”
Cathy smiled shyly.
“If you'll have me.”
Karen smiled back and wrapped an arm around Cathy's waist as they both began walking back to the parking lot.
“I wouldn't want to be stuck with anybody else, kitten.”
