    “Anything,” Charles swears, and means it.

    “Promise me you won’t do this again. Promise me you won’t risk my father’s anger, even if it’s for my own sake.”

    “Edwin,” Charles says, gutted, because that’s like trying to tell his own heart not to beat in his chest. It’s just not possible.

    “You said anything. Promise me,” Edwin orders. “As prince I command it.” He pulls back to look Charles in the eye. Charles tries to duck his head, avoid that clear gaze, but Edwin catches him by the chin and forces it. “Please.”
